- I was asked a question on stream, it was a simple one: what is the best position in Football Manager? In a sense, this question ignores tactics and wonderkids and player roles and everything else that affects the most important position in your team in particular. But, as I do, I sat there and thought about what position in FM offers the most versatility and upside, which position has more ability to change the way your tactic plays than any other. After this long train of thought, I came up with an answer.
This is, of course, a very subjective topic. Every position in a tactic can make or break how it works and which team it tactically exploits in any given game. There is no debate about the amount the position I’ve chosen affects tactics once you’ve set everything else. One change to this player’s role and you have a completely different team mentality at times. Ideally, you would just have amazing players at every position so it wouldn’t have to be a concern. We don’t live in a perfect world though, especially in football manager.

This has changed a lot about the way I play my fullbacks. But...most importantly this type of video is teaching me how to properly read the game. I spend too much time on "Key Highlights" and not enough actually reviewing film. More content analyzing movement! Tutorials on how to get the most out of uncommon roles and positions? These sorta videos are amazing for learning how to get more creative with the tactics and create a style of play. Watching the striker, wing back and winger videos together really helped me understand the attack more. Would love to see a comprehensive guide on the midfield

Trust me here lads, IWBs are absolutely broken. As in really, really good. The only problem with them is that it's a rare role to find players naturally good at by default, and you will therefore likely need to retrain guys to play it. I recommend either retraining a WB with all-round ability to a IWB on the other side, or retraining DMs to IWBs. Crossing is less important than passing and dribbling, physical attributes (though still great) are less important than mental ones, and two footed players are particularly useful.

I can imagine how much work went into this video, it’s really one of the best I’ve seen on FM. I have a young player who I have trained to play wingback. What would your minimum be for marking/tackling/positioning for a CWB player in the FB position in say the English premiere league?

Zealandinho Shannonov back at it again
Inverted Wing Backs and Inverted Full Backs are the toughest role to find and train in the game. Im doing a save with Vitoria from Brazil... I got so lucky because they have a player called Zeca who is a natural Left Back AND RIGHT BACK who plays PERFECTLY with both legs.
What do you think about fullbacks on support? Is it worth having or should you just use a fullback on attack instead
Going into the vanarama national league with Dorking Wanderers, got promoted so do you think its a good place to be trying to start using wing backs over full backs or is it better to stick with full backs for now?

If you want to press high, inverted wingbacks should be your choice. I won the Champions League with Hertha Berlin with Phonzie Davies playing right back as an IWB. I set them on “support”, they need good physics and decent passing. I use a deep lying playmaker if the opponent has a real 10 (AMC), if they have 2 strikers, I will use a half back. They will form a 3-man line in possesion, easy playing out from the back. It’s important to play WIDE. Totally stretch the pitch and press high with both MC-s on “attack”, and both wingers on “attack’ - they give u width. The striker is tricky, he needs to link-up with the 4 attacking players (2 mcs & 2 wingers) - i most often use a false nine or a deep lying forward. Set tempo and passing on low, keep possesion, don’t look for overload and enjoy the tikitaka 😁

what do you think of the 3 center back and 2 wing back option ? complete with 2 CM 1 OM and 2 center forward ?
I have two tactics: (1) where I have Full Backs on Attack, and (2) where I have Inverted Wing Backs on support. Should I train them as complete wing backs so that they can transition between both roles easily?

@zealand you can find loads of inverted wing backs, but they are expensive, and all raised mostly in Italy xD
I play with a 4-1-2-2-1(with wingers)...how can I make my central midfilders go to the box when the crossing is happening? No matter what role and forward instruction they are never in the box when the crossing is made.
I have both of my Midfielders push up in the box when wingbacks/wingers are crossing. I use an Advance playmaker on attack and a box to box, set both instructions to attack higher up or something like that and roam from position. They overload the box like hell

Wuld you use fullbacks in a system without wingers (4132 narrow for example)? or is that too defensive, even when underdog?
As long as your instructions are go forwards, stay wider and cross more often should be fine. Player instructions > Roles
After this video my team is playing much better. I just needed to change my WB roles to suit them better.

I typically play WBs or CWBs with IFs and Mezz further up the pitch. Is there a danger that they're cramping up each others' space?
I think the mezzala might not work with a IF as well
With winbacks and inside forwards it ain't a problem, at least on my saves
In fact, it looks to be super effective when the wingbacks are supposed to overlap, my right back is essentially a machine for getting assists despite... Well, playing Right back
Mezzalas might be a problem tho, as they indeed cramp up the inside forwards space a lot

Hello how do I dowland a logo pack on iPad for FM 21 if there is one and how do I install it pls someone help me!
Does anyone use the player instruction of stay narrow on their inside forwards/inverted wingers so the wingback has more space to overlap and your better attacking players are more central thus more dangerous? I keep trying but can't really see a difference, anyone out there who can?
It works for me. Make sure your team shape is also narrow. And tell the wingbacks to go wide, push higher up and cross more often
There seems to be a mistake; this video isnt about Wide targetman. The NCB is obviously also the best back because he hoofs up the Flo-passes.
I would think the Flo pass would come from a wb on defend with try longer passes, take more risks, and so on. The NCB is only going to hoof it upfield, and is not going to be accurate enough to hit a wtm. You want Pirlo type passes, you don't want to just clear it.
Unless your WTM is Emile Heskey (retro database) with 20 jumping, pace and acceleration. Then you can tell every player to just hoof it upfield, and he'll catch it wherever it lands.

wouldn't be great to have your own club in 4 division and develop it without any restriction by the club owners
I’m on board with that idea but I’d make it cost 100-300 million £ , so it gives incentive to keep raising your wage/salary as a manager. Something to work toward. 40-100 mill being lower tier clubs, 300 mill being higher tier (Madrid, man city, Barca ETC.)

Nonetheless what you’re saying would definitely still work; but I was more so thinking along the lines of an “end game” as opposed to a new game if that makes sense.

You misinterpreted the video. Z tried to explain how, due to its versatility, the full back position can change the way your whole team operates, making it the most influential role in the game. He even says it in the description if you can't follow what he said in the video
