Volkswagen California 2019 - saying goodbye to an old friend?

  • There are some new cars on the way from Volkswagen but my heart will always stay with the California. Any two-car garage should start with this camper van.

    It's a shame it's only a 4 seater. I'd consider one of these but it would mean leaving someone at home. But it's a handy thing to have for those weekend getaways, that's for sure.

    Very down to earth review and if anyone is thinking of buying a Cali this gives you a good idea of what you get. But I must say you appear to be very unfortunate with the fuel consumption. We are on our third Cali, a 204 DSG, and it has averaged 35.3mpg over the last 9500 miles (8 l/km). Our previous Cali was a 180 4motion DSG which averaged 30mpg (9.4 km/l) over 17000 miles, and our original was a 140 manual which averaged 35.31mpg over 16400 miles (8 in/l). The later engines are more fuel efficient with increased power, although the 4motion obviously pays a penalty at the fuel pumps.

    Thanks Bob, I really enjoy your reviews. You are spot on about the California. I’am a committed fan of camping and foreign travel for 15 years and am on my second California. Yes, it is expensive and, no, it is not for everyone. It is really a life-style choice for people who are prepared to keep it long-term, and use it as their everyday car while also taking every opportunity to get away for weekends around our very beautiful Emerald Isle. And if, like me, you love long 4-6 week trips around Europe every year then it all adds up to decent value over 5 to 10 years. And great fun. When you decide to sell it after all that you will be very pleasantly surprised by the high demand and low depreciation compared to a standard family saloon. Btw, you are right about the drive away tent and the wind out awning.

    One thing with the California that I also have with my Eurovan (US Multivan) is the sliding door being on the wrong side. It can be a bit of a pain in the arse sometimes. Converted vans tend to have the sliding door on the ‘correct’ side.

    Camping is a way of life - I’m currently on a 6 week trip around the Canadian rockies, and the locals here are effectively professional campers, and could spend weeks way way off the beaten track (everyone seems to be a survivalist). In Ireland or Europe, you’re never that far from civilization - I’d struggle to justify €60-70k on a 5 seater one. In fact I just flat out wouldn’t. (I like hotels and real beds too much!).

    Just got back from 3 weeks in Scotland wild camping in my T4 2001 150hp California. Amazing vehicles but the prices are ridiculous. Mine is getting on for 20 years old and is still worth around 28000€. New ones are how much? 60, 80k?
    And with fuel consumption at 14l/100km?
    Wow! And I thought my 150hp was thirsty at 9l/100.
    Just for the record I used to get 7.8 from my 102hp T4 Multivan...

    VW California not available out here. It’s a Swiss Army knife! Neat

    • @robinforrest7680
      @robinforrest7680 Před 5 lety

      That's the first time I've heard anyone else come up with "Swiss Army Knife" 😁 Exactly how I describe it. We got ourselves the extra 2 seat bench which was available as an option in Germany so we can also seat six people if we need too, but fitting it does mean you can no longer open the kitchen cupboards and installing is a 2 man job.
      It's less versatile than a Multivan for sure but I've still done a couple of moves with it. Long loads are no problem with the bed folded down.

Travel with hubby and two dogs in collapsible crates. From Byron to Perth two years in a row, back thru Nullarbor one year and Broome Darwin the next. Uluru,The Alps etc! Better if under 5'7" IMHO.
      Should've got the blue motion but Nevermind.

    Great video. Lots of useful points made. I looked at getting a California after I retired. The cost was huge. >£65,000. I ended up buying a used rental VW Transporter van 14months old (had to stump up the VAT) then send it to a garage specialising in VW Campervan conversions. check out www.cambee.co.uk. Totally bespoke conversion. I spent just over £42,000 for a unique vehicle. Awesome result. Top tip: Treat the vehicle like a small yacht. Stow everything so it does not rattle or make a noise. Its easy to do... Know where everything is stowed. Sort out routines and procedures for setting up the roof and electric hook-up. Think about solar panels and a tow hitch for bike racks; roof bars for kayaks/canoes/surfboards etc. Check out suppliers of blackout blinds for the windscreen and memory foam mattress toppers. Try and get the most powerful engine possible. I have a 150bhp 6 speed manual gearbox. With Ad-Blue I get between 35 and 45 mpg. Great range. Best thing I ever bought. We named her as well. It's a good daily vehicle as well. Enjoy your Campervan.
    We hope your wife has made a full recovery. I can relate to the tears as I have seen them in adults when checking out my Campervan.....
