  • We are coming up on the end of the 1st 9 weeks of America's Story 1 by Master Books. We've loved this history curriculum and today I'm going to show you the books that we've read to go along with this beautiful history book by Angel O'Dell. I have some really great books for you and your family to read as companion books for America's Story 1.

    I read the Sign of the Beaver when I was in elementary school and I loved it, I still remember the story 20 years later.

    Thanks for sharing the companion readers, Mandy! We are using Master Books for the 1st time including My Story and Americas Story 1. We love them! The companion readers would be fun to add to our morning basket.😊 I share some of our favorites over on my channel as well! 💜

    Hi! Did you come up with a list for the second 9 weeks? Would love to hear your choices for literature for the next part of the course!

      @@mandy-maltz thank you. I have heard about lapbooks but, did not know the purpose of them, how to use them etc...I saw a couple videos but, it seemed a little out of sorts. I love the presentation of everything you do because I would do it the same way.

    Would this work with a 7th grader and 2 elementary kids together?

    Does America’s Story come with a supplemental reading list? Or did you put these books together yourself?

    Thanks for all you share!! Are you guys using Masterbooks for Geography to compliment the history?

    Hi! I'm excited to follow this series of videos as you are a few weeks ahead of us! We are just finishing Christopher Columbus. I quickly realized the worksheets are not going to be the best resource for us. I have some uneunenthusiastic writers here. Ha! I have been adding library resources and Pinterest/TpT resources to liven it up.
    Question: Do you follow the schedule included in the AS1 book or make up your own?
    Do you test/quiz? We are required to turn in grades. We are mostly using a literature approach and adding fun activities as we go. Not sure how to grade that.
    Thanks!
    P.S. I think my boys would live to build a Viking ship!

      Thanks so much, Crystal! We follow the schedule and do the worksheets, tests, and quizzes. My son doesn't mind the worksheets and likes the drawing and puzzles scattered throughout. Plus I like to use the quizzes to make sure that he's comprehending what we're reading.

      Yes! My boys do enjoy the drawings! They are 8 and almost 7 so... All the short answer worksheets are tough. They usually answer them orally. 😉

    Do you have to have the readers with it? Does it come with books? I have a 3rd and 1st grader

    Great Video!! Thank you 💜 Is there a suggested reading list for America Story 1 or do you come up with your own reading list? Oh.. do you use the use the student worksheets from the teachers guide for your son?

      @mandy-maltz  Před 5 lety +2

      I found these books on my own, though we do read from some of the suggested reading on Master Books. I like having my 9 year old read further about the characters that Angel O'Dell spends time writing about. I think it really helps bring that person and time period to life (plus they learn more about them). We do use the worksheets and teacher guide, It just makes it easier.

    We started this last week, sadly..I’m just not impressed with it. Ditching the teachers guides and making it work, it just hasn’t lived up to the hype - I’m hoping it gets a little better though.

    Another great video!! Quick question - were homeschooling 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders next year. do you think this would be too much for the first and second graders? I think it's suggested for 3rd to 6th grade, but I'd love to know what you thought since you've been using it :-)

      @mandy-maltz  Před 5 lety

      Thanks! This History curriculum is recommended for 3rd-6th grade (it's the first in a 3 part series). I would say it depends on the child. My son is in 3rd grade, so this was perfect for him. Look into the My Story line from Master Books, we did 2 last year and we liked it! It's for 1st and 2nd grade.

    Thanks for doing this review. It helped me make a decision on the curriculum. Just as a suggestion, the amount of “So”s were a bit distracting as a listener. And make eye contact with the viewer instead of watching yourself in the camera. It makes for better quality as well. Good luck with the video content and homeschooling your kiddos! It’s great to see moms on CZcams sharing homeschool content!!
