  • Rather than examining what takes your breath away, Sundar Balasubramanian, a radiation oncology researcher studies what breath gives you. A deep breath relaxes, and he explains it creates significant beneficial changes in physiologically relevant biomarkers. From his translation and application of one of the more than 3,000 poems in the ancient script Thirumanthiram, Dr. Balasubramanian, has made an important discovery for public health and offers a simple 1-2-3 exercise for well-being.
Born in Tamil Nadu India, Sundar Balasubramanian studied yoga starting at a young age from his father and uncles. Graduating from Gurukula, he majored in chemistry, and yoga, meditation, prayer and group singing also part of the curriculum. In 1999, Dr. Balasubramanian came to Charleston, SC for post-doctoral research. Except for three years working at Yale, Charleston has been home since. His work with other Medical University of South Carolina scientists includes a Yoga adjunct for various diseases. Based on Dr. Balasubramanian's interest in Tamil literature and Yoga, he collects ancient scripts. Applying the translation of one of Thirumoolar's writings to his yoga breathing practice launched the idea for his groundbreaking study of yoga stimulated salivary biochemicals and how they affect human health. His future goal is establish to conduct research on mind-body exercise, from various cultures, to learn any social and therapeutic potential for integrative medicine..

      a metaphor, breath, like awareness,
      or a candle flame,
seems so fragile, vulnerable to influences, our awareness is subject to change, being agitated, reacting to or against others,
like a candle being exposed to a breeze, or being blown out,
but fire doesn't die when a candle is extinguished, fire lives & can light or re-light as many candles as there are birthday cakes,
& so our breath & balance of awareness can also be re-aligned & restored to balance
      with a little regular attention.

It is no coincidence that the 8 pillars of yoga (ashtang yoga) as described by Patanjali go in this sequence.
    Yama --Moral Values
    Niyama --Discipline
Asana --Yogic exercise(what is not mostly considered yoga)
    Pranayama --Breath Control
Pratyahara --Control of the mind and the senses
    Dharana -- Concentration
    Dhyana --Deep Meditation
Samadhi --Union with the object of meditation

True. Breath control gives Mind control. Mind when controlled the senses are controlled. When senses are controlled one can dive deep into meditation to reach the static state. In this state the Cosmic energy flows in the human body and the healing takes place. This leads to opening up of our chakras in our subtle body and the third eye opens which gives more perception and understanding. One can enter the Samadhi state. The raise of Kundalini energy occurs with purity. This leads to Self Realization. When Self is realized God is Realized. God is the Truth. Good Video.

+Narendra Sajja Very true! And most interestingly, the Eye bears a huge significance throughout history -- and through my personal knowledge of the bible, this shines true for myself.
'So Jacob called the place Peniel (*face of God*), saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared." '
Jesus was a metaphor for the Pineal Gland, for the penitent thief and the impenitent thief that hung alongside him on their crosses symbolized the *good eye, and the bad eye*. He was between them, hence him being the Pineal.
The pineal gland -- your third eye -- is your window to God, and the truth. So true, and so very awesome.

Wow...My Tamil Brother...I'm so proud of you, sharing your intelligence ( what a brilliant mind) and your advise to the world. I always wondered what it would be like if the whole world practiced YOGA for 1 week. Mankind as we know it would be changed for ever and for the better! in a matter of just a few years...because people will be addicted to life, not just their own, but all life forms( so amazingly beautiful) if only!
The challenge is .. how to get people to understand themselves and their 'drunken scorpion bitten monkey minds'.
Humanity unfortunately, is stuck on trivial things.. vanity, greed, fame, material items, EGO feeders. Kill your ego...see yourself as the tiny spec of dust within this universe.... eventually we all turn to dust...we are formless and colourless without our bodies....we are invisible.
Yoga is a science teaching us how to care for this human body or housing for our soul. Its not in any way trying to change or convert the world. It should not be looked as, belonging or originating from a specific race, religion or geographic region, it should spread throughout the world...much like how diseases or hatred spreads, but will work in opposite creating harmony, wellness and love. We would prosper as an evolved human species with mindfulness & consciousness.
I wish this upon all human beings...because we are the chosen ones...but majority of us don't see this fact.
    Blessings & Love to All.

Why are you (actually all Tamilians) so fanatical and parochial about Tamil Tamil Tamil. That's quite Laughable. You could have been from somewhere in Himalayas in your past birth (or be that in next one, or Tibet or even Somalia !). If yoga has touched you, please realise that Yoga also teaches that whole world is the same family and being parochial is severe "ignorance" or "Avidya" as the yogis say. Even sage Agastya was from Himalayas. No ?

I'm 5th generation African, my forefathers were the ones sold on the dreams of better life, only to become slaves cutting sugar cane in a foreign land. Im still proud of my Tamil heritage and I have every right to be happy to see a person of same heritage share a message of love, a path of Hope and a better life to others.
If all you saw in this message is the word 'Tamil'.....then you seriously need to address your insecurities within yourself. He, nor I are claiming that Tamils invented yoga. We respect anyone of any culture or race that can bring some good to humanity.
Share Love and respect to all without being afraid that you are going to be lesser than anyone ... ignorance always leads to hate.
      God Bless you

Thank you Dr. Bala for an excellent insight into the yogic breathing.
we have heard all along the phrase "calm down and take a deep breath" when in stress or pain or indecisive or confused or what ever... It used to help. This practice was probably an abridged version of breathing technique that we followed blindly. The breathing yoga that the speaker talked about was well explained scientifically and gives an understanding of the reason / mechanism why it works. I am going to make it a point to practice it. There is a wealth of information available from the eastern civilization and hopefully the entire world can benefit and live healthy.

Great ! We are proud of you. Yes, by reading my pulse one Siddha Varmam doctor predicted how many years and months back I got a hit on my back and pointed out the exact spot. I remembered how in my Tamil Nadu (Thamilh Naadu) village house I used the rope hanging from the ceiling ignoring the rail-less ladder to reach upstairs in a single swing. Just when I was about to land, the rope broke sending me down to the floor in a flash after a hit from the door latch. I was almost breathless. Luckily my uncle who too knew varmam revived me at that time ! But several years later this expert cured me completely. That expert's son who is also knowledgeable, is in USA but does not wish to be identified.

When you control your breathing, you control your life. It's no secret that anxiety and anger, which can have devastating and often tragic consequences, can be greatly reduced by breathing techniques.

I remember once, I did not know what was happening then - one of my oldest sister was giving birth. Mother kept on telling her to breath, mother was so upset that she used bad language, but she kept on telling my sister to breath. All of the sudden I hear a baby cry, and I understood then what all was about it! Breathing is the key!

Controling the breath or its awareness is the key. Moreover they insist that the breathing rate should be drastically reduced in order to live longer or be stopped to become immortal. It makes sense.

Tibetan Tsa Lung meditation, Korean Bulmudo, Indian Yogic techniques (perhaps the source of this wisdom)....More recent manifestations such as Wim Hof Impact therapy all indicate the efficacy of these breathing techniques, which have spread and achieved growth in adherents WITHOUT the need for double blind testing. I'm all for scientific testing to verify medical claims but the measuring of physical factors will never measure, or for that matter prove the spiritual aspects of such techniques. I would say a level of faith and an honest exploration is what is necessary on an individual level.

      वस्त्रेण वपुषा वाचा विद्यया विनयेन च ।
      वकारैः पञ्चभिर्हीनः नरो नायाति गौरवम् ॥
      Transliteration:
vastreṇa vapuṣā vācā vidyayā vinayena ca ।
vakāraiḥ pañcabhirhīnaḥ naro nāyāti gauravam ॥
      Meaning of the subhAShita:
A person without all these 5 'va' kaaraa-s (words starting with 'va') does not attain respect: clothes, appearance, speech, knowledge and humility.
      Commentary:
For a person to attain respect, there are a few basic requirements. All the five requirements quoted here start with the Sanskrit alphabet 'va'.
      1. vastra (clothes). For humans, being robed in society is necessary. It doesn't have to be extravagant and expensive, just decent and appropriate.
      2. vapuṣā (appearance). This is not just referring to physical beauty, but more the presentability of a person, in reference to inner beauty and cleanliness.
      3. vācā (speech). One's speech should be pleasant, appealing and harmless.
      4. vidyaa (knowledge, education). This is very important for a person to have in order to possess the above three 'va'kāra-s. Education gives one awareness of the world (and himself). It is also the one surefire way to attain liberation (mukti).
      5. vinaya (humility). This is the most important adornment to any human being. Whether he is rich or poor, young or old - humility is the one adornment he can carry with him at all times.
A person who has all the above 5 qualities automatically attains respect wherever he goes.
      pada vigrahaH:
      वस्त्रेण वपुषा वाचा विद्यया विनयेन च ।
vastreṇa vapuṣā vācā vidyayā vinayena ca ।
      वकारैः पञ्चभिः हीनः नरः न आयाति गौरवम् ॥
vakāraiḥ pañcabhiḥ hīnaḥ naraḥ na āyāti gauravam ॥
      Alternate Transliteration:
