  • A brilliant and memorable day climbing the Munro Beinn Sgulaird. I had first seen this stunning looking Munro 16 months earlier from the route up to the summit of Beinn Fhionnlaidh. Back then it had it's winter coat on and looked even more dramatic, imposing and impressive.
Walk Highlands describes the panoramic view from the summit of Beinn Sgulaird as being as good a view as you can possibly have in Scotland on a clear day...I agree.
Beinn Sgulaird is a Scottish mountain located between Glen Creran and Glen Etive in the southern highlands. It has a height of 937 m and is classed as a Munro. The mountain takes the form of a long ridge which runs from southwest to northeast, three kilometres of which lie above 800 m

Great video from a great hill. One of my favourites.
You were actually pointing out Beinn a'Bheithir and not Bidean nam Bian & Beinn Fhionnlaidh though.

Just wana say thank you Douglas for the inspiration to tackle my first munroe last week(ben lomond) Im a 32 yr old dad of 2 from glasgow whos always had a passion for being out in the Scottish wilderness. Its weird primal feeling as if i belong there lol i used to hillwalk and did many grahams/corbetts and fished many beautiful lochs but i stopped for 5 year due to having kids and lots of work. Watching your videos inspired me to bag the ben and now im looking at ben vorlich. 😎Keep up the good work because you deserve a lot more subs.

      Hey JayJayBhoy86 Mcgowan,
Firstly, thanks for the very kind comments you have made. Encouraging others to get out and explore our amazing country is just one of the reasons I started vlogging my trips. Plus, the more folk who go out will hopefully mean I’ll have their vlogs to watch and be inspired by in return.
You are so right about that feeling you have in regards to a primal need or pull to be out in the wilds. For all the technology and creature comforts we enjoy as human beings living in the 21st century, our biological system hasn’t really evolved much in the last hundred odd thousand years! Our default setting is still geared towards a time when we lived off the land, we hunted, made shelters, fires and cooked what we caught. That’s still our DNA, and we can try to deny it or ignore it but we can never truly escape it. I’m so glad to hear you are embracing it!
Maybe you’ll vlog a trip or two yourself? Who knows how many others you yourself will inspire?
A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle my friend!
      Best Regards and Keep Climbing,
      Douglas. 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Nice one Douglas! Haven't done it yet myself but it looks and absolute corker! I'll need to save that one for the nice weather! Great vid, thanks for sharing! Cheers, Kris.

Hey Kris, yeah it was one I wanted to climb for a good while. In fact the whole time I was going up Beinn Fhionnlaidh I was wishing I was climbing the one opposite, lol.
I’m sure you’ll do better than me at nailing the pronunciation. It’s phonetically pronounced Skoo-Lirst, but every time the GoPro was running I mentally blanked it and kept calling it Skour-Lisht! Lol. Pretty shameful considering it’s in my top 10 so far now.
      Thanks for commenting Kris,
      Keep climbing buddy,
      Douglas. 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@DouglasGilgallon Haha yeh it's a tricky one that! One of those weird gaelic rules if a D follows an R it turns into an "rsht" and the pronunciation ends up nothing like it's written. The rules are even more weird if an R is followed by a B or G. It's fun to try and learn tho! I used to think it was SGOOLAIRD 😀

Yeah, I’ll look forward to the vlog whenever you make it up there Kris. I’m positive the drone footage alone will be nothing short of immense! 😉👍🏼

Awesome trek! Just curious if you speak Gaelic? I know that I personally would butcher any attempt at speaking the names of this munro, so I'm curious if you need to know the language or if its just something that you intuitively pick up by living in Scotland.

      Hi Michael,
Thanks for your question. I know very little Gaelic, none of it even remotely useful. Lol. I’ve learned some of the patterns in regards to what letters look like and what they actually sound like. However, the best source of information is the website Walk Highlands. They have a play button on all there mountain pages which will give you the audio pronunciations of all the mountains.
      Hope that helps?
      Best Regards,
      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@DouglasGilgallon That WalkHighlands really is a great website. But still, even hearing the pronunciation I sometimes have difficulty with some of these mountain names. How often do you go out hiking like this?

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 5 lety

Hi Michael, I know what you mean, even hearing the names on the website can still be difficult to work out.
As far as going out goes (weather & family commitments aside), I try to get out once every month but on average twice each month. Beer trying to do more double Munro trips just to cut down on repeating the walk-ins, as they can often be long in a lot of cases.
      Hope this helps?

      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
