Agreed as a mechanic, its an extremely useful tool. As a side note, i learned how to do a brazilian beaver wax yesterday, so i can add that to my repertoire and off that service to my customers ;)
I keep watching all of these general labor videos because it is so interesting to see jobs I would have never taken. It's really saddening to see how negatively all of them are looked down on. Majority of the comments say some pretty rude stuff about these guys, yet they keep the world moving.
I agree about these guys keep the world moving. In my neighborhood, the garbage truck wasn't working for eight days because one of the drivers had COVID-19, and people were going mad because their trash was piling up. Now they realize that ugly, stinky, and poor garbage men are vital to picking up their garbage, because honestly, without them, we're just garbage makers.
I'm surprised they are not required to wear a gas sensor to enter a confined space. Also they should be sampling the air in the tank in multiple spots over time to make sure there is breathable atmosphere there before they go crawling in there.
This was a great video. ..I have always wondered what it looked like inside one of those tankers, these guys are great looks like a fun shop to work at.
Vacuum trucks are similar but just have baffles and dont separate liquids entirely from one another. The only truck that'll rock ya to sleep on a windy road...🤙🏼
1psi = 27.7"wc (1 pound per square inch = 27.7 inches water column). It's the amount of pressure required to lift a column of water 1". (Or the amount of pressure exerted by a column of water that is 1" in height). It's just a more accurate pressure measurement for low pressures / pressures less than 1psi. Like natural gas to a home is usually delivered at around 7"wc, or .25psi, from the regulator. So his 18"wc. in the tanker is around 2/3psi. There ya go!
..Yeah, that's the usual thing....check for level of combustible fumes.....maybe he didn't show that part of the operation....? I had a job doing this stuff in early 1980's....ventilate the tank with air hose and venture, then check for % of fumes....
The tank compartments need inerting or degassing. No good just purging with air as he can only take a gas reading below him and not to the extremes of the tank.
I have a question that need your professionalism attention. If you are loaded with 4 compartment tanker and you had 6 stops and your tanker is not bone dry. What do you do to get prepared for the next day? Do you have to fumigate your tanker daily? Do you keep adding fuel on top of old fuel in your tanker? Diesel fuel turns to gel when cold so what you do a 5 degree day on a diesel delivery
Some tankers have solid baffles to separate different types of fuel...you have to climb into a different manhole on top. I had a job doing this in the 1980's....after inspecting, if you find cracks...they get welded up.....
The manway tops should have been bench tested to make sure gaskets are good and vent needs to be changed every 5 years. In Michigan we have to drop the king pin plate to check for weld cracks or corrosion, not just measure the pin. We also blow air through the tank typically 24hours to Degas both gas/diesel or propane trailers. Some trailers have these tie down threaded rods every 18"-2' that hold the tank to the chassis of a trailer that have to be cut off with a die grinder and then replace with new tie down rods. We also do a pressured water test in each compartment, through each compartments piping to the valves at about 3 psi ( with the vapor rails closed). The vapor test he was doing talking about water though the vapor rail is different we have a meter with water in it. I'm sure this test he used can be accurate if it's calibrated. You don't have to be small to do this. I'm 6'2" 200lb and I did this quite frequently, but yeah if you have a gut it's not gonna be easy getting in or out
Smart-trucking’s CZcams has a neat story on it. In summary, his friend hauled a bunch of tire chains onto a new trailer so that weights and measures would rate it as being a lower capacity. Lower capacity = less weight = you can get up the mountain faster. (Back in the days of relatively weak trucks.)
Alan07881 well that all depends. If the tank is wrapped, it's gotta be inspected every year because you can't see the welds. If it's unwrapped, it only needs inspection once every 5 years. Hope this helps.
Which trucks carry the different types of gasoline? Because I didn't see any separation of gasoline in there. And inside the gas pumps there's no separation or additive place to put additives in the gasoline as it's coming out of the pump. I'm only asking because I knew somebody who worked at a truck stop for 15 years and they only had two tanks underground one for diesel and one for regular gas and there was three options on the pump and only one truck that came to fill two tanks and they came at separate times. My friend who worked at the truck stop said that there really is only a couple types of gasoline because the premium and the super are the same as regular gas. I can't confirm any of this but by watching this video I didn't see any separation of different types of gas inside the tank and I've seen inside the pumps and there's no additives inside the pumps. So how do they transport the other supposed types of gasoline and separate them in the tanks in the ground or through the pump?
Sir I was wondering the same thing that's why I checked out this video because my friend and I was talking about the premium fuel verses regular and what I notice is that there is always one fuel truck coming to the gas station so we are thinking if it's all just a scam by the fuel industries to get more money but so far we don't know if that's true but I'll keep searching if it is...
Interesting video but so many things wrong with this confined space entry, it really should be taken down, if the local area OSHA office gets a hold of this the site can expect a visit. No LEL test prior to entry, untrained attendant and rescue person on the line, did not see a permit completed, and Im sure the guy with the video camera broke the plain of the confined space and he surly is not trained. Confined space entries are deadly! Please make sure you train your people and follow the OSHA guidelines.
Good thing we check are tanker's every 3 months. As much as they are used every day you never no what could go wrong. Aways look yourself as far as what you can see on the outside.
i used to do this - first job i got. advance engineered products. caught fire inside welding up cracks. we use cleaning solvent and it wasn't coming out of the squirt bottle - but it was coming out, just out of the trigger, not the spray nozzle and i didnt know. soaked into my coveralls.
our lead hand went into one of the tanks for inspecting and took in toluene to clean up some welds and ended up passing out from those fumes and luckily at that time we had man watchs ontop of the tank so he was pulled out soon. after that we used beepers we clipped on our clothes that sounded an alarm if no movement for 30 seconds. but even that was no good because if you're in and having a seizure or something, you're moving so, no one would really know.
I do this for a living and that purge process was not done correctly and the testing process has changed a lot since this video was made. And I'm all up to date on this stuff because my grandpa was killed in a tanker and never want that to happen again.
do you like driving trucks? do you have a attention to detail? can you do a repetitive job every time the exact same way without deviating at all lest you spill? with a 4" hose they gavity drop roughly 1200 litres a minute. It pays good but demands a lot more than the average gear grinder

Fuel system work on anything is no fun. I've cleaned fuel tanks on aircraft and I'll be happy if I never do it again. Being covered in fuel and smelling like it for 8 10 hours out of the day can really get to you. Id almost rather take out the toilet on an aircraft then do fuel system. I do the same inspection on tankers it’s been 8 years now

That's funny, I don't care who you are.
Use a match, you will know if there are fuel vapours in there pretty quick lol

So cool, thank you Paul! Never knew about the baffles.
We have to wear respirators when working inside our tanks. Very surprised he isn't wearing one.
Very good and informative video on bulk fuel tank. Please make a video on various tanker equipment ad their functions in a tanker.
Florida Roll & Tumble.. lol. I like these "in depth" videos that show things that normal people wouldn't see.

I’m the tank inspector in La I do all of the exact same because DOT regulations are required and everything on a tanker has to be up to code
Bet that's not a cheap inspection. Good thing he makes sure you know how often those bottles need to be inspected.
cool video man. thanks for sharing
Very interesting, that dude with the long hair looks like a real life undercover Thor. Also the gas stuff was interesting too 😉😝
The guy with the beard looks like the epic meal time dude
Thanks Randy!
The guys doing the service sure know their business.

Not his first rodeo. Seeing someone that ain't just gonna 'fake it til he makes it' is rare these days. Dude is definitely ON POINT with his job.

ware do I go to get this job
so how dose the trailer get air to open the internal valves

I would assume the same air supply used for the trailers air brakes + suspension.
