This new mode is awesome. Not fighting constant invis or titan shields is so good. Some people might argue “is it still destiny without abilities?” But honestly the abilities still are part of the game. Just not constant spam. I’m so shocked bungie made it this good out of the gate.
Plus the gunplay in this game is a big part

It's such a breath of fresh air, especially after the Craftening.
Its so nice not having 300 nades thrown at you in most engagements
Games end way too quick tho. Score to end match needs an increase.
sturm has always been an underrated stat monster tbh, and with the right ornament that sight is cleaan

Correction it's a definite 1 tap.
Checkmate is definitely a fun twist but it should come in as a relentless playlist or a permanent mode along side with standard crucible to keep it fresh.
Been using it for a bit now and Sturm feels so good. I really like drang too so I’m happy to pair it as well!
My old school Igneous Hammer Adept sits on 90 range, 62 stability and 90 handling with elemental capacitor - it also has killing wind. Its an absurdly good roll and I am so thankful to have it.
I have a few old adept igneous, my best one has to be fluted / appended / rapid hit / celerity (reload mw). Appended boosts the mag by 2 which is pretty huge for this gun, its nice. One of the best hand cannons in the game for sure
... I went flawless with Round Robin + Drang this weekend and it occurs to me I should have been using Sturm this whole time since I'm using drang anyway lol
this gun is so clean and a stat monster, we need more exotic 120s 🙏🙏

i think perks for me can sometimes be more important than stats. my new adept igneous has keep away moving target, buffing reload, range, accuracy, strafe speed, and target acquisition. not to mention having alacrity or one quiet moment too. im sitting at like 55 handling and 100 range with KA. add on dexterity mods and it just seems to provide more overall, and can be used with conditional finality! i prefer the new perks to celerity for sure :)
I actually love the way sturm looks, even the reticle on the ornament you use aswell. Best ornament for it by far

i have the old school igneous adept with rapid hit ECAP, stat monster on void/ arc. the ae is nice on strand as well. celerity as a back up if i run solar for the extra stats

I actually just found an og igneous hammer adept in my vault with hammer forged, ricochet rounds, killing wind, celerity or opening shot with a handling masterwork. They need to bring back celerity.

I have an adept Igneous (old version) with 98 stat range and 86 handling w/ elecap and killingwind on top after a kill. Imo its the best 120 rolled HC, unreal range.

I'm excited to get home and try this mode. The builds in destiny are becoming very powerful and they need a nerf in pvp honestly. It's awesome for pve I enjoy the power creep there. But there gets to be too many situations in pvp where there's just nothing you can do. I love that this mode focuses primary fights.
1v1s in this mode instead of rumble would be so good specifically against titan overshield and like you said invis hunters

I have 95 range on my Igneous not including Keep Away, that thing hits from far. I’m an Ophidian crutch so Handling isn’t a dealbreaker for my primaries and once Synthoceps gets changed they’re going to be great for close gun fights. Basically free Threat Detector
I mean iggy can get 50-60handling with 90-100 range rather easily so eh.

My only gripe with the new mode is some of the ttk tuning makes some weapons so useless against others. 120s are just hyper dominant. Id like it better if they had current weapon tuning but it all of the special and ability changes from checkmate.

So what's the god roll on the old Igneous Hammer? I still have a few adepts I rarely used after they nerfed 2tapping with rampage.
abilites being calmed down in pvp is something destiny has needed for so long I feel, where you have builds focused around loops of ability spam inside a mode that SHOULD be all about gunplay this mode feels refreshing
Keep away opening shot with max handling igneos 3 taps fine at 40 meters with first bullet hitting max and next hitting 72’s, i would prob still use igneos over sturm
I love this handcannon and would have absolutely tried to abuse it in crucible with drang if the dot on the sight wasnt on the rear post. Makes it impossible to aim for me unless i'm standing still
As someone with 3k crucible kills with Sturm I can confidently say: it’s always been the best

Sturm is one of my favorite guns in the game. Drang is cool too but Im just not a sidearm guy lol the wwII look of em is amazing though and Sturm is a monster
Foundry is not updated yet after the fall off changes, Sturm is hitting closer to 41m
It would be nice if they changed the exotic perk to work with ALL side arms and not just Drang.
You can use other weapons in checkmate but you're hindering yourself not using these HC, cause their TTK hasn't been effected

It was fun playing against you on Eternity Wallah! GGs and glad you're enjoying the mode. I loooove the lack of titan barricades and warlock rifts too, even if I think Hand Cannons are maybe a bit too hot and the obvious choice, lol. Looking forward to the finer tweaks because everything else is a certified banger.
Main problem of thew Sturm it's his impact, if look it's not vertical and this mess up all positive about this gun.
Plus exotic perk not so exotic.

Its always been the best HC in the game for awhile... it 2 tap guaranteed after 1 kill with drang... which is the fastest ttk close range primary (non exotic) weapon in the game. I've been using this for a long time now paired with drang, and it's just too good
As someone that has mained Handcannons since D1; I look forward to your thoughts on HC changes. I recently got back into D2...like a few hours ago, so the info during a match or two would be cool.

Old igneous with the right roll still completely outclasses it in almost every way, although tbf very few people probably have that good of an adept roll. I got really lucky and have one with 90 range, 62 stab, quickdraw, and a choice between snapshot and celerity, and I prefer fractethyst over matador, so I'll likely never use sturm.
Idk if anyone agrees with me, but I have the old igneous god roll and I just prefer the way sturm feels. I also like using Matador 64 which is why I always use sturm over igneous.

I’m going to have to disagree. While I used to use Sturm quite a bit, the new Igneous Hammer just feels better. With keep away and adept range my roll is hitting 98 range. It’s also got higher aim assist and stability. I guess it depends on your input method and character though because Ophidians just erases any handling or reload speed problems.

Igneous you can get 90 range, 65 handling, same stab with keep away and any other perk, that will be actually useful, I take that over +5 handling and zero perks
