Christian Critique of Bharatnatyam Exposed

  • The complex interplay between colonialism, religion, and cultural practices has shaped the trajectory of many traditional art forms across the globe. One such art form that has faced significant challenges and transformation is Indian classical dance, particularly Bharata Natyam. This article examines the historical context of Christian missionary influence on Indian spiritual dance, focusing on the period from the 17th century onwards. It explores the multifaceted impact of colonial attitudes, missionary activities, and indigenous responses on the evolution and perception of Bharata Natyam and the devadasi system.
"India alone has a concept of a God who dances. Siva is Nataraja, Lord of dancers, who dances in the Hall of Consciousness and weaves into it the rhythm of the Universe. Within His Cosmic Dance are included the Divine prerogatives of Creation, Preservation, Regeneration, Veiling and Benediction . Dance in India has been so closely linked with religion, that today it is impossible to think of it divorced from this essential background. - Rukmini Devi Arundale
Hindu art-forms and the rich Vedic traditions are under aggressive attack by missionary-scholar nexus aiming for Christian infiltration and appropriation. Bharata Natyam, a revered Hindu spiritual dance form with origins deeply rooted in Vedic references, is the prime target. This ancient art was already established long before Bharat Rishi penned the Natya Sastra, the cornerstone of performing arts and aesthetics, in the second century BCE. This blatant encroachment on our cultural heritage must be fiercely resisted and protected.

Namaskaram. Thank you for creating awareness on the issue. An imp issue for Bharatanatyam artists to ponder upon. The cultural institution Kalakshetra in Chennai (not Bangalore) is indeed the one that intended to preserve the spiritual artform.
    Shuddha Nrittam is pure dance.

Many Thanks for your kind words Madam! We will make a special episode on Leela Samson & Rani David . The degree to which these two ladies twisted the Bharat Natyam dance to map it on to Christian culture in India and Abroad needs to be brought out and shown to Hindus the world over. Please do watch our episodes on this and other topics relevant to Sanatan and Bharat

We should be great full to our ancestors, the Rishis, who ,by their Thapas and continuous saadhana, has built our culture and civilization, so well, Divine and made it reach it's pinnacle, name it dance, music, science, astronomy, astrology, philosophy, Shilpa Kala, language, etc, has reached it's pinnacle, by their effort and contribution.
Other so called cultures, have only looted us ,our humble and scientific way of living, by threatening us ,or cunning ways.
Most of our people are sold out and have become gaddars, without understanding the greatest gem, treasure that is Divine ,given to us by the grace of our Rishis.
Everything we have in our life, is gift of God and is dedicated to the Lord only.
This is the concept of our temples, education and living.
I am blessed and a proud Hindu.

Namaskaram...Excellent video. As a foreigner who considers herself a Sanatani, Tamil Nadu has been one of my beloved states in Bharat. I've been fascinated by Bharatanatyam for more than 25 years, but never had the chance to properly learn because I'm from the Caribbean. What I'm seeing in Bharat and all around the world is a battle of forces between a globalized agenda (that from very powerful people) and the preservation of diversity and pluralism. Only education and traditions will save beauty in this world.

He is universal consciousness. Manifested in different forms name throughout the globe giving birth to different religions and cultures. Sringar bhakti is the asence of Bharat nattyam. Loving God and singing his glory can't be a monopoly of any one community. Art in any form is a unique and universal language. As an artist one must not lock him in one single thing......

    What is Hinduism?
    +++++++++++++++
I have long pondered on what constitutes this so called religion that is sitting on the head of my Tamizh people and have come up with some conclusions ....
The priest from the Zoroastrian religion came to india with their Avestan language and fire rituals and later created some slogans in old Sanskrit to form the Vedas which was never written down.
These priest learnt the principles of the Samana tradition that originated in the southern part of the sub continent namely in the Tamizh tradition and started incorporating it into their already existent vaiteegam rituals and produced the Upanishads and became vegetarians.
For a solid philosophical footing which they needed in a highly philosophical Tamizh infused land about the 8th century Adi Sankara came up with Advaita logic that distorted the original Buddhist thoughts and produced a dichotomical nonsense which did not last the test of time.
Later they took up the Tantric Samana Tamizh tradition and put forth the bakti religiosity. This they took also from the Christian tradition and desperately created for the Islamic onslaught. Bakti was based on erotism and appealed to the masses. The high Samana tantric philosophical basis was ruined for the newly conjectured 'Hindu' religion of the wretched puranic tales.
This is the history of the Priestly class(Brahmins) that still retain their priesthood in the agamic temples that held sway through the bakti movement from the 10th century onwards. The consecutive non-Tamizh rulers firmly rooted the new found 'Hindu' religion with its caste system( the four varnas) that the British gave the final seal to....

All Dravidianists want to have a separate state of Dravidistan based on them being disciples of a person called EV Ramasamy.
Even Thirukurral mentions the Vedas. So I would suggest that leave and dissociate yourself from false Dravidianist teachings and educate yourself on the true meaning of Dharma. You can also return to Sanatan Dharma fold by viewing our introductory lecture on Vishnu Sahasranamam. Thank you for viewing our channel. Each poem has its meter, each art form has its beauties. World religions need to respect each other. The same soul born as Muslim in 1 janma gets born as a Hindu in another to experience different aspects of life on earth. The definition of classical Carnatic keeps changing every century, ragas gain popularity and doe out. But the soul of the musical offering is permanent. One doesn't bother about popularity or acceptance while pure singing or dancing. It is perfect for the god if given with love.
