  • ‪@walkingwithbill‬ visits the historic village of Christleton near Chester in Cheshire north west England. This small village has many historical buildings and is mentioned in the doomsday book of 1086. The Shropshire Union Canal passes the village with its famous humpbacked bridge that separates the village from Rowton. The first canal hire fleet in Britain was formed in 1936 at Christleton marina by "The inland cruising association Ltd". During the English civil war the village was occupied by Parliamentarians (Roundheads) and the battle of Rowton Moor (also known as the battle of Rowton Heath) was fought nearby in 1645 against the Royalist forces under the personal command of King Charles 1st who's forces occupied the walled city of Chester. The King was looking to reinforce his followers in Chester which by now was his only port. The Royalists lost this battle which was a significant loss for their cause.
