If there was ever a reason to deviate from a book then this is it. Alina and the Darkling belong together. They have serious chemistry. It shows. But for Alina and Mal the writers keep telling us and forcing it down our throat. It feels forced.
Yeah, I didn't like the end of the books either. Mal and Alina have a really forced relationship, ohhh, we have to stay together because we grow up in the same place, you were my only friend and you are my responsibility. Mal doesn't shows love interest in Alina until all people's attention was on her and not on him and he didn't even realize for many years Alina was not really her and was suffering from staying with him in the orphanage and he never asked her about her feelings. Because of Mal pressure, Alina didn't realize that she wanted different things, he manipulated her saying ohh, I leave everything for you, he was really selfish most of the story and that's why I don't like him. Yes Darkling was trying manipulate her first but at the end he really has strong feelings for her but Alina think he was fake because she never give him a opportunity to explain himself and that was sad.

I totally agree. Darkling have lived for centuries and have gone through so much, its hard for him to show his true feelings. How can you explain centuries old history and experience to some whom he just met, thats why he was trying to be patient with her. They both have so much chemistry. Mal is such a bore, he suffocates her and dont let her be herself for his own selfish reasons in the pretext that its for her good. Cant stand such a person - he didnt allow her to be herself. In a way he also wants to control her . I hope Netflix will do a different endgame than the books. After all watching Season 1, they already deviate ... but definitely for the better. Lets hope for a Darklina endgame.
The way I literally HAD to ship them after that stunt on skiff in the finale but I have been reformed it was a moment of weakness
I don't read the books coz they are not my cup of tea, but the movie, well, these two have the best chemistry in the whole series. You guys can say that this is a toxic relationship or whatever, but when putting myself in the Darkling's POV, I can tell that the man at least had true feeling for Alina, he for sure, is a bad guy, but you cannot tell that he didn't love her at least for once.

I'll say this again like everybody else: The chemistry is out of this world. Like there's almost no chem between Mal and Alina so this has to be our ONE and ONLY ship!!! Nd it's so enchanting!!
The air was ashy, breathing was becoming inexorably difficult. My lungs were filling with dirt and the noises all around me sounded muffed from the explosions. My sight was becoming blurred and everything looked incredibly slow as if I were looking through a window at someone else’s life. I looked around me: the Crows were holding themselves together, Inej standing in front of Kaz, her eyes wide with surprise and fear. Kaz was on his back, I couldn’t tell if he was injured from here. Jesper was kneeling next to him trying to say something in his ear but he didn’t seem to be paying attention. All his focus seemed to be on the scene before him: Aleksander was in a cloud of night trying to fight off the king’s army on one side and rogue soldiers from Fjerda on the other. He was on his knees, a streak of pain colouring his face, blood rippling from his torso, ruining his uniform and painting the dirt on the ground.
My hearing was starting to come back slowly, I turned to my right were few meters away was his majesty’s army. The General was shouting at me, it took a few seconds to register what he was saying - kill him! - his voice scary as he growled at me like a mad dog. I looked into his eyes and I saw it: just pure hate, for who I was, for my abilities. Hate for something I didn’t choose, hate because I was different from them, more powerful. I never given them any reason to be afraid of me, till a few months ago I didn’t even know what I was. But none of it seemed to matter, they still hated me just like they hated Aleksander and I hadn’t even striked back at them. In my mind came back the memories of Aleksander’s past, not the story they taught in their books about the Black Heretic but what had really happened. - I didn’t know what to do… I was just a boy back then trying to learn to control my power - his gaze was fixed on a distant point in the room but I knew he was actually lost in thought - Me and my mother spent months at a time running and hiding, until one day the guards captured us. I was threatened that they would kill my mother if I didn’t do what the king asked, he wanted me to fight for him. He wanted me to round up others like me and win a war for him and we did. You know how history says that I became greedy and insatiable with power? Do you know what had actually happened? The same night we won all my people were sleeping in the barracks and he sent soldiers for a coup: they killed everyone inside. I wasn’t there, I went to break my mother free of the dungeons but I heard it: high pitched screams like the crackling of fire. By the time we had come out the barracks were burning to ash. I spent the next twenty years running away and hiding my people - I looked at him, he seemed suddenly so young and so old at the same time. The weight of his words and the memories were showing on his face giving away a truer idea of his real age. But his eyes when he looked at me… he seemed what I would have imagined a frightened ten-year-old Aleksander to look like. A confused child whose life had been stolen from him, a child who was victim of circumstances he didn’t choose. I remembered when he brought me to the fountain saying how he had always made a wish that he could be anyone else, he hadn’t lied about that.
Mal shook me out of my thoughts, I turned to him. He was covered in dirt and was pointing his finger towards were I knew Aleksander was struggling. I turned my gaze and saw him fighting to not fall on the ground. One hand was keeping his weight from collapsing, the other was erecting a wall of shadow trying to keep off spears and bullets. As if he felt my eyes on him he turned his head and looked at me and I saw it all over again: a scared boy, confused as to why he had been hunted down his entire life just for being different. I looked over the army again and I rose to my feet. Mal tried to grab my arm but I shook him off - Alina, what are you - I didn’t give him time to finish - I am going to help him - Mal’s gaze looked as confused as if I were speaking some ancient language he could not understand. - What do you think will happen once I help them kill him? What do you think they will do to me? - I pointed a finger at the army with rage. - I am the same thing as he is to them: a threat, an annoyance, a bug on their shoulder jeopardizing their power. The only reason I am still breathing right now is because they think they need me to kill Aleksander. As soon as he drops to the ground they will turn against me as quickly as they once considered me an ally. I will need to spend the rest of my existence running and hiding, fighting for my life. Fighting to not be killed or captured and sold off. And Mal, eternity is a very long time to be afraid - I didn’t wait for his reply, I didn’t even look back at him. I didn’t want to look or I might have changed my mind. I started running towards Aleksander.

Literally!! Let's be honest ravka will never be a safe haven for grisha until the grisha actually rule the damn country, and while the Darkling may favor the safety of the grisha if he were to be king, alina as queen could help balance that out by also being a voice for all the non grisha people, since they all already see her as a saint. The two of them ruling together is an ending i hoped so much to see, but it's like the books discarded all of alinas abilities and potential without second thought, all so she could end up with wet wipe of a man, mal over there. Honestly I think the show does a better job of making mal more accepting and not nearly as much of a douche as in the books, however that said, I still don't think there's enough of an independent story or character for mal as himself, everything about him just surrounds alina, while she has her own greater purpose and capabilities. They're good friends and keep each other going but they are not equals and can't be and that's ok, it doesn't mean they have to lose affection because of it. But darklina all the damn way!!

The song is brilliantly used in the video, wow. I genuinely don't understand how these characters aren't together.
They are friggin soulmates, darkness and light, yin and yang. Hell, even Ben Barnes said it himself. Just because Mal is the good guy does not mean he and Alina belong together (well, from what I've been told about Mal in the book he's a complete dick anyway). The Darkling and Alina they defy each other, they challenge each other, it's so interesting. Yes, the Darkling is manipulative and he is violent, and it can be scary but that's what he was taught in order to survive, that is how the Grisha are where they are.
I mean tbh I think Zlatan is more of a bastard, letting Fjerdans in, so they can raid the docks and kidnap and kill Grisha, no wonder the Darkling wants to kill them. If the Fold was gone, there'd be no stopping the Fjerdans, Ravkans and Shu Han from killing them.
Throughout the decades he's only had himself for company, to make decisions, and he's become colder and crueller because well, of time. With Alina, he doesn't feel alone anymore, he feels like he could spend forever with her. That moment where she touches his hand and the light just exploded, his face! His face said it all. It's like he's saying I've finally found someone, and Alina could really be his balance. I feel like when she said to him that he didn't give her a choice, neither did she. When Baghra took her, she should've went back and gotten the truth out of the Darkling, she knows him better than bloody Baghra, he would've told her I think, and she could decide from there. She doesn't get how much the Grisha had to suffer and maybe he could've told her that so she could understand. I feel like he really wants to protect Alina as she is the only one like him, and, if they got the chance, the other side would try to kill her.
I swear, there is literally so much potential with these two they're really interesting and complex characters. I hope Netflix realises because God knows I'm going to fucking lose it if they don't.

Darklina deserves a happy ending as there's no value of darkness without light and there's no meaning of light if there's no darkness. They're made for each other and only they can understand each other's power. There's no one like them! Alina & Darkling should be the endgame! As we read in the books, Alina almost feels empty when the darkling dies and her power is gone. That shows that only Darkling can make her feel the things she craves for. Like calls to like! Against all the odds, I still hope there's a happy ending for them!

This grasps the essence of their relationship. Its kind of heartbreaking as he has an agenda to save Grisha. 100's of years of pain has made the soft Aleksander disappear and then there are those special moments when Alina brings him back (his balance). Like when he was explaining the threats and got enveloped in emotional darkness in episode4 and Alina touched him/cancelled out the darkness and they were engulfed in a light bubble and he felt better and looked like he was going to cry! God he looked relieved from many years of pain like someone finally could share what he's going through. She showed right there she was his equal and he has been in love with her all along.But like most fantasy drama's its PROBLEMATIC. lol!
