Is It Justified to Steal for Food Banks?

  • The campaign Everybody Eats performed another 'Robin Hood’ action on Saturday in Hastings where 3 people went to several of the largest supermarkets in the city one after another and took enough food to restock a food bank’s sites without paying.
This is illegal - it’s shoplifting - but can their actions be justified in any way?

Supermarkets already donate to food banks and additionally have places where customers can also donate items for the food banks. in this case stealing isn't justified when you have the option to share food, fundraise events, raising awareness and other options should be first.

Supermarkets pass the loss in profit from theft onto the customer. Additionally, there are large retailers with targets on stock loss where employees can lose annual bonuses due to theft. So this just causes greater harm, both to workers and the wider public. It's a bit pathetic choosing to steal when real activism is important here, this is a serious issue that the government needs to take on

When people steal from stores ... the corporations loses inventory, pay higher insurance premiums... and most likely the corporation will recoup their losses by increasing their prices, And if they continue to have losses those same corporations will decide to close the stores resulting in the community no longer have a convenient place to shop and hundreds of people will be out of the jobs.

It´s stealing...The trouble with food banks is that in the begining there was a stigma visiting them. Now they have been normalised and hence the numbers have increased and the more people take from them hence they go low on produce. Vouchers for the homeless and for the poor is the only way but the aruguement has always been this is degrading. The more selfcheckouts come into existance then this should not be the issue anymore.

He’s just making the corporations charge more money for food. It’s always the poor that suffer. It’s not like the corporations will absorb the cost that thefts cost them - they just pass it on to the customers so he is making it worse for people that are struggling.
BTW I think supermarkets are price gouging and ripping off customers.
