Is It Justified to Steal for Food Banks?

- The campaign Everybody Eats performed another 'Robin Hood’ action on Saturday in Hastings where 3 people went to several of the largest supermarkets in the city one after another and took enough food to restock a food bank’s sites without paying.
This is illegal - it’s shoplifting - but can their actions be justified in any way?

Supermarkets should drop their prices and pay their staff more. They can afford to do this.
we should do food coupons like america for the poor
That be the staff they have punted in recent years in favour of self service checkouts to make even more profits
🎯 Absolutely right.
apart from the fact that supermarket's net profit margins at near 0
But it has a knock on effects for farmers and already poor foreign food cultivators
I was under the impression that Richard Madeley enjoyed shoplifting 😂
Blame big boss from supermarkets who get £3 million bonus they don't care about staff and I think that big boss should not get paid £3 million
It’s astonishing how they justify committing a crime. Funny how he couldn’t answer why he didn’t pay for the food instead.
Tesco 2.3 BILLION profit in year to feb 24 compared to 880 million previous 12 months how often do you see items at 3 or 4 quid but if uou have the clubcard you get it for the actual price of 2quid we are being taken for mugs
clubcard is a complete scam. they just inflate the prices for people who dont have a card
Ah yes, hate profits, its good to know you dont understand accounting & economics
Yeah the billion dollar supermarket chain can take the hit so the starving people on the streets can eat
Then the chain closes the store.... then what?
High theft = higher prices for everyone
@@nickbreen287 No billion dollar supermarket chains are closing or raising prices because starving people are stealing to eat. Redirect your anger at the muppets running the country into the ground, not the working class and homeless who are suffering the most because of it.
@@charliedell4994if a billion dollar company are losing money from a single area or store they will close the store as it’s financially no longer viable. That is how they keep their company earning billions, if every store allowed shoplifting they’d go bankrupt. Why is it that stores for poorer people go bankrupt like Wilkos rather than shops like Waitrose
If we had zero theft food would be way cheaper food, the problem is drug addiction. I see people outside food banks smoking its disgusting
Stealing is wrong no matter who it is for.
Absolutely agree. But we need a solution, if people are working and not earning enough for the basics…. Then something is terribly wrong with our economy. Something must be done. However stealing it’s just not right.
The billionaires are literally stealing peoples right to affordable food
I think and interesting perspective on this is the Islamic one, where punishment for stealing is to cut of the thief’s hand.
But it is said that if the stealing is done by the impoverished only trying to feed and cloth their family that it is the government who should stand trial and not the person forced to steal.
Shush
@@domhamai exactly. If people are going without food to the extent that they have to steal, an islamic government would see it as a shame upon themselves.
Why am I thinking Robin Hood
I was just thinking that.. Instead of ‘Robin Hood’, I’ll call this dude ‘Robin Food’. 😂
The food banks are getting busier because anyone can go along and get cheap food. I know a few people who work full time and have enough to go to Tesco but can fill a bag up at the food bank for £5 so then go for a £50 night down the social club.
Well said Peter ❤
Brilliant, Peter 💚
So encourage more people to donate to food banks. Supermarkets even have the options in their stores to donate to food banks.
More theft will lead to higher prices - Just look at LA, San Francisco and New York
Higher prices are caused by corporate price gouging whilst wages stagnate. We're being taken for a ride.
Because of the action you took now regular citizens have to pay higher prices. Good job which we essentially then will create more homelessness
Says a lot that the thief ignores Susanna’s first 3 questions
Once you justify this bahaviour, where does it end?
that retired copper wants to legalise drugs
That first 2 minutes was the most robotic conversation I’ve ever heard
Supermarkets chains don't make enough money
LET THEM EAT CAKE.
Lawlessness destroys a country in many ways, not just with violence.
As does unregulated corruption of all the public services and systems to support a public
It is never justified to steal at any time. As people were quick to say about Boris and Prince Andrew. The law applies to everyone.
ROBIN HOOD.
THE M.P.S....ARE STARVING.
Well people know they can literally walk in to a tesco
Fill their bag and leave with no consequences
Staff are told not to do anything
Police aren't interested if its under a certain amount of money
But if you stole it from their kitchen cupboards, they would expect the police to be around in minutes.
Nope!!
What do you mean nope?
@@jxcxbshxnkz445 It means what it says.
Yeah let's all go out and steal the food we want, how is it that obesity is one of the biggest problems, yet there a people " starving"? Disent add up to me
Them filming there selves is the point i dont get, it feeps like look at me
And this is why I'm glad I was in America
57 homeless dead birmingham.
Cool
Supermarkets already donate to food banks and additionally have places where customers can also donate items for the food banks. in this case stealing isn't justified when you have the option to share food, fundraise events, raising awareness and other options should be first.
Does he work for "JUST STEAL (olive) OIL"?
Supermarkets pass the loss in profit from theft onto the customer. Additionally, there are large retailers with targets on stock loss where employees can lose annual bonuses due to theft. So this just causes greater harm, both to workers and the wider public. It's a bit pathetic choosing to steal when real activism is important here, this is a serious issue that the government needs to take on
When people steal from stores ... the corporations loses inventory, pay higher insurance premiums... and most likely the corporation will recoup their losses by increasing their prices, And if they continue to have losses those same corporations will decide to close the stores resulting in the community no longer have a convenient place to shop and hundreds of people will be out of the jobs.
I don’t see them going into banks stealing money then giving that to the “starving”
I think anyone that is desperate would not care if it was robbed or not. I think he is saying what he is saying because he is a detective and does not want to look bad another person that lives in a buble.
First for the food bank then gradually for their own pocket...criminals are criminals inborn.
It´s stealing...The trouble with food banks is that in the begining there was a stigma visiting them. Now they have been normalised and hence the numbers have increased and the more people take from them hence they go low on produce. Vouchers for the homeless and for the poor is the only way but the aruguement has always been this is degrading. The more selfcheckouts come into existance then this should not be the issue anymore.
The question is, should you really rock up in your Mercedes or your BMW to pick up your 17 bags from the local food bank?
The ones I know walked there.
It's a grey area I don't know if I agree or not. If the food bank is possibly charged or even worse closed down then thats not helping anyone.
He's going about it the wrong way, won't ed well.
We live in hunger and we live in hunger strike, be it stripped from legal representaiton or stripped from wrongly allocated government welfare benefits, then when we appeal, we lose again. meanwhile health is compromised as is life shelf of health. foodbanks also are discrimination to sectarian world we live in in UK........
no it isn't.
so where do you draw the line.
if you let this go then the line will be pushed and pushed
He’s just making the corporations charge more money for food. It’s always the poor that suffer. It’s not like the corporations will absorb the cost that thefts cost them - they just pass it on to the customers so he is making it worse for people that are struggling.
BTW I think supermarkets are price gouging and ripping off customers.
I steal aswel gotta survive
You're _Stealing!!_ It's NOT okay!
Get a job
How can you even ask this question. Its like youre in two minds. Stealing is never acceptable. Ive been homeless off and on for ten years and in all my years on the street i cant recall ever meeting a hungry person. Beggars literally have to hide the mountains of food they get given so ppl still give them cash. This guy isnt stealing to feed he is stealing for purpose, just another form of virtue signalling.
Brexit Britain, everyone is poorer and more desperate every passing day. Blue passports though.
Huge respect to Luke and everybody eats. Who is Richard, a wealthy man, to say that people in the UK aren't starving when we all know that children are going to school hungry now more than ever. Found this whole segment disgusting and will now be supporting every body eats
This country is an absolute joke. This guy from everybody eats has a valid point,
Good to know you don't understand accounting, economics & basic law
Thay could grow veg for free i kinda agree its a modern robin hood but you cant steal and then come on telly 😂😂😂 your going to get used to set an example

No
They’re doing a good job! Taking it into their own hands to help others in need because the government aren’t doing anything!
Don't shoplift but instead boycott Tesco, Saynsburys and along with all the other extortionate businesses retailers!
NO NO !!!¡!
RICHARD - " LOOK IN THE DICTIONARY, STARVING" HAHAHAHAHA !!!! HAVE YOU, RICHARD, EVER SAID "I'M STARVING, I COULD EAT A HORSE"? I DONT HINK YOU WERE STARVING OR THAT YOU ATE A HORSE - THE GUYS AN ABSOLUTE THICKO HEHEHEHEHE
