Understanding OTTO APOCALYPSE - A Splendidly Written VILLAIN | Honkai Impact 3rd

  • Who is Otto Apocalypse?
Through all the media I consumed, only a few antagonists have had a lasting impact on me. Otto Apocalypse is one of them. A hypocrite. A clown that lost his own sense of self 500 years ago when his hero and love of his life died an unjust death caused by a world that did not deserve her.
You may know him as an evil villain, a pitiful soul, or a fool that challenged fate. What made him such a brilliantly written antagonist? What was the main inspiration that Hoyoverse took when they created him? And what are the most common misconceptions regarding him? All of these will be answered in this video.
Otto always had a tumultuous relationship with the Honkai Impact 3rd community. Almost everybody harbors strong feelings towards him, be it hate, love, or respect for his unwavering persistence. But if one thing is clear, that is the fact that he is one of the most well-crafted antagonists that HoYoverse created across all of their games. From a strong motivation hidden beneath layers of complexity to a strong philosophical background inspired by the work of the German philosopher Frederic Nietzsche, Otto Apocalypse is a character whose full potential has been realized.
A man who rose above the stereotypical portrayal of a villain. And, despite how impossible his goal seemed - he achieved it. For me, characters like Otto are what makes fiction worth investing my time in. I always believed that the role of a good character is to stir up emotions in the eyes of the audience. Be it positive or negative. It doesn't matter. Art is about expression, about feeling, and Otto made us all feel something.
Farwell, O’ great inventor! See you in the next world!
    Please Enjoy!

    Hello everyone!
This video has been in the making for a long time. It's a bit longer than usual but I felt necessary to keep it this way to properly convey my thoughts and feeling about Otto's character. Even so, I still feel like there is much more to say, but I tried to keep it as simple as I could. If you have any questions regarding the points I make in the video, feel free to leave a comment below and I'll do my best to answer them.
With Otto's story officially done, my coverage for the next few months will shift to the Elysian Realm. Expect a lot of ER content this summer. Maybe I'll sprinkle in some Honkai: Star Rail if I have the time and I feel like it. Anyway, thank you all for watching! I'll end this with the words of a wise man:
    "Kallen, I'm coming!"

One thing I want to point out is that while Otto's plan was to lose to Kiana and Durandal, he still viewed destroying the present world/500 years of history as viable back up plan. He planned and accounted for losing, but he also accounted for winning.

You did forget to mention two things off the top of my head-
He and Kallen loved each other. Whether they were in love doesn't really matter- they could never have gotten together without their relationship being dysfunctional; at the start of their relationship, a weak boy who thought of a girl as his hero and put her up on a pedestal, and at the end he would've been a 500 year old man reviving a twenty year old who he wasn't even in a relationship with, and Hoyo's writers are a lot better than that. But since they were children, the only people they really had were each other- Kallen's parents were dead and gone, and Otto's family were all neglectful, or distant, or actively malicious sociopaths, and all the two had was each other.
And Otto's reasons for reviving her were, I think, more about guilt than love. He was the one who released the Honkai beasts that killed her, and that she was going to be executed doesn't really matter- he was the reason she died that day, he picked that method of causing a distraction, and he never realised that instead of just running away with him, she'd turn around and defend the people against them. He needed to make up for his mistake- like he said at the Imaginary Tree, he always felt like the world rewarded the scum, and punished the heroes- because for 500 years he's been living with the guilt of having lived on after he killed her.

    This made me cry.
Aside from the fact that every frame of Thus spoke Apocalypse makes me cry on its own, it's really refreshing to see someone not criticizing him.
As a diehard Otto fan, one that play Honkai solely for him, who endured and still endure today periodi harassment for the sole "crime" of loving Otto, it's so good to finally see someone talking about him as an all--rounded character instead of "villain=bad" take most of the western Honkai fandom has.
I think otto really had planned to reverse the time if Kiana and the other girls had failed to defeat him. After all, if they can't defeat Otto, what chances could they have against Honkai? Sending them back in time was a plan B to ensure that whatever the outcome was, Kallen would be alive and the world had more chances to win against Honkai.
His was a mad bet, with a somewhat solid backup plan, that in the end paid of.
Now he'll be on Star Rail, and I'm really glad for it. I'm not ready to say goodbye to him yet. It might sound silly, but Otto Apocalypse helped me overcome some really tough times, and I'm no exaggerating when I say that if I'm here today, he played a big part in it.
So, to finally see someone appreciating him and his story without stopping at the surface level of understanding (Otto against protagonists = Otto bad) is really refreshing. Thank you so much!

He is this morally gray person that we all hate and some love in the Honkai universe. Even tho i hate Otto and not see his side of the story until his final moments in Ch. 28. In retrospect, he really is just like certain well written antagonists that we normally see outside most modern Gacha Games(and sometimes modern Games in general) stories nowadays(Seriously Hoyoverse why are you unable to make Inazuma well written and make it a character oriented story instead).
But in all retrospect, Otto is a masterpiece of a game that is always being in the shadows of Genshin Impact in terms of success. Its like watching an antagonist that went full Kirschtaria because Shana cannot be together with the existence known as Sakai Yuuji.

He is an amazingly written villain and i hate him to his core. But he made the honkai more enjoyable. I myself dont see Kebin being as interesting as him but we will see. My worst thought is what will happen if kallen finds what otto had to do to make her deadnt. Would she take her life away? Would she gain more willpower to make the world into a better place? Worst of all she wanted otto to make the world into a better place WITH her. Now she is all alone against the world. Sure he gave the world a way to kill honkai but he also gave the world an enemy greater than it. Void archives is the most dangerous being humanity can face per vill-v.

Is it not interesting that Otto, born from the house of a CHURCH, does not see worth in humanity because of it's complacence to ideals such as fate and gods?
I believe this shows that Otto's view on humanity being a disgrace did not only start with Kallen's death, but since he was a child. He was shunned by his family because of his inventions and sickly state, already planting the seed to his hatred to church like ideals like fate and gods. This is such a genius part of the formation of his character, and only goes to show how someone's childhood can affect them all the way into the future, and for someone like Otto that's for over 500 years.

Probably not. His father was actually a decent guy. Though he has problems like power hungry which was inherited by his daughter and sons except for otto himself. But overall his father did care for his offsprings and the people of his nation.
Otto was happy being on the side. He grew up in a time of turmoil and disease.
You are right about him doing shady things even before kallen's death. But he never thought human lives as worthless. He knows what he has done and he even admits that to kallen when she found out what he was doing. But his reasoning back then was it was a necessary evil to insure the many survives from the sacrifices of the few.
With kallen's death the only thing that changes in his mind set was he was done pretending that what he does was for the greater good. He accepted that he is a vile man doing nefarious things to other people.

If you consider GGZ this is actually a very good theory. Because, Dr. MEI in GGZ Era Zero programmed the root of the imaginary tree to ensure that Kallen dies in every branch of the tree forcing Otto to become Overseer until Kiana and Mei become herrschers.

For all those that are new here and have come here after the Penacony story quest, listen up:
I know it's all for the memes, I know its all for shits and giggles but you can't possibly compare Caelus/Stelle who have met a random girl only to be killed hours later to a guy that held 500 years of feelings towards his only support system in a time where they were both vulnerable. Otto is a much more complex character (which makes him my fave villain in a Hoyo game) and more than a "simp" as some of the HSR-only players have called him. Even the man Homu-Labs said it himself.

Otto is just... I don't know how to put my feelings about him into words. For one, I cannot find the respect and admiration that many others describe having for him.
His ambitions are that of a child who lost a person he idealzied into a perfect hero and even in over 500 years, he never seemed to realized that. He ignored Kallen and focused all attention on the mask of a hero he'd placed over her. And even if he might have loved her in their youth, after 500 years, really, only the mask remains. for fucks sake, he makes a video game where the whole point is the two of them getting a picture book happily ever after.
Then again, I love his kind of villain. The scheming, secretive type who always wears the same, knowing smirk and seems to be two steps ahead of the "good guys" at all times. He is enjoyable to watch whenever he shows up, ready to be even more of a nuisance. And he's especially amazing at this since he knows, he's aware, and he plays up the persona. It's tons of fun.
Though he is entertaining, when I first watched him die, I was filled with satisfaction and even glee, mixed with some sadness that my favorite, overly dramatic clown had left the stage for good.
On a level beyond just performance, He was right in some of the things he said. The world has no all - powerful entity enforcing justice and the ones who will emerge victorious are those most willing to do anything in order to reach their goals - the villains.
But his strange, disturbed view of humans, coupled with his selfish, immature goals make it hard for me to like him as more than, well, an entertaining weirdo.
In short: I like the silly clown man, was happy when he died and physically cannot empathize with his ridiculous actions.

    • @HomuLabs
      @HomuLabs  Před 2 lety +42

Yes, you are right. There are quite a few versions of Kallen in the Captainvers that are alive. There is one in the Sanka Saga story for Yae Kasumi, but she dies in the end. Otto could have very easily find a Kallen from another bubble universe that was alive. The thing is, he wanted to revive the same Kallen he knew 500 years ago. Simply finding a Kallen in the multiverse that is alive is not what he wanted. He wanted the same soul, and the same person he knew back then to be brought back. For that to happen, this was the only way. He created an alternate timeline from his original universe 500 years ago, and made a new branch sprout out in the exact moment Kallen dies, making sure that he saved the same person he knew back then, and not some multiverse alternate version of her.

I've just read the Seven Swords Visual Novel and I gotta say. When Li Sushang was about to be killed by Ma Feima. Otto stopped him and saved her even if he had no reasons to. I saw the potential of the good Otto there. He could've just ignored it and let Li Sushang died, but he went and saved her while wielding the Judgment of Shamash that costed almost his life(Which is ridiculous since Otto was so obsessed in bringing Kallen to life. He wasn't thinking right when he went 1 on 1 with Ma Feima which was the total opposite of the usual cold Otto that would use anyone to achieve his goals)
At first, he didn't care about Li Sushang which was observed by Ma Feima that made him lose interest in fighting Otto calling him as someone that didn't care even if the world ended, but he interfered when she was about to be killed. It reminded of the final scene when Otto fought with the Imaginary Tree. (T-T) It kinda hurts when I read Li Sushang describing Otto as just an ordinary human when he was asleep from his heavy injuries at the end of the fight. I hated him for what he did to Himeko. But, I pity him. If Kallen hadn't died maybe Otto wouldn't had been the main antagonist of the story.

I want to say/believe that, at least, he sees theresa, as a person/someone to love first, a pawn of his plans second. From all event potrayal i am aware, otto functions as theresa's parental figure. To pick him as the parental figure consistently means that that part of him is genuine.
And his final message to theresa at the end, thats a geniune farewell as a guardian figure. So at the very least, even if he can use her as seen in his dialoge during the plan to awaken Sirin, at the end, he does sees theresa as family

Most of the things said aligned with my ideas about him and the other things only build up to that. Otto is great character, best character in honkai in my opinion and all that build up only shows it. Not many villains, or anagonists I should say, acomplished their goals, and even less did so with such a success as did Otto. He didn't throw the world away because of his despair but did the opposite and took its fate in his hands. The result was great with the growth of Kiana, Dudu, Bronya, Seele, Theresa and much more to be there after he disappear and take the world in their hands and continue building it from there to new hights. The means weren't morally acceptable, no matter how you look at it, but in a war there are always sacrifices and you can't run away from that fact.
PS: Sorry but my grammar isn't the best.
