Making a Wrapped Grain Wooden Gift Box

  • In this video I show how to make a large fancy gift box from walnut with maple splines, and a maple tray. The box is designed to have the wood grain on the outside wrap continuously around the four sides of the box (wrapped grain). The box, including the lid, is made from one long piece of walnut lumber.
    The dimensions of the box are approximately 13 inches long, 8 inches deep, and 8 inches tall. The maple tray is approximately 1 and a half inches deep, and is held up by four protruding walnut dowels inside of the box.
    The hinges are brass hinges made by Brusso hardware. The lid is a floating solid walnut panel glued at only two points to allow for expansion and contraction along the depth direction of the box. The bottom is walnut veneered quarter inch plywood.

    Boy, that came out really nice. I love the little reveal between the lid and body of the box. Sometimes it's the simplest little things that give a project that extra oomfh. Gotta try that the next time I build a box. Takes it to another level.

      Thanks, Don! I got the idea from Steve's table he builds in the TWW course where he puts a reveal around the outside of the plywood inset to hide any slight inaccuracies!

    With the method you have shown, you only have a 3 corner matched box, but where the 4th meets the 1st, there is no match. If you start with something like a 4/4 piece of lumber and split it lengthwise down the middle on your band saw you can make a 4 corner match. One half of this book-matched piece becomes a back and a side, the other half becomes a front and a side, giving you a full 4 corner matched wrap.

    Hey mate. Very nice work. Couple tips: shallow cuts to separate the lid then finish off with a hand saw will have less risk of damage. Also I'm surprised you didn't get burning on the lid routing... if you do, try a nearly full depth pass, them a shallow pass

    • @dkbuilds
      @dkbuilds  Před 3 lety

      Wow that's a great idea for separating the lid, I will definitely do that next time. After finishing with a hand saw, I'm assuming you hand plane the surfaces flat and smooth? Is that tough to get a crisp/clean fit (hand planing the two surfaces to get them to match up exactly)?

    • @alanfredericks926
      @alanfredericks926 Před 3 lety +1

      @@dkbuilds If you do a full depth table saw cut for the long sides and a shallow cut for the short sides, you can plane the hand sawn short sides flush with the table saw cut. You could also use a chisel plane, take the bulk off with a flush trim saw, or even a chisel would work okay.

      It's actually insulation specifically made for garage doors. I'm not sure exactly what brand but there are many options available if you search online. What I have is fiberglass which actually doesn't insulate sound very well at all, but I'm sure there are more options specifically for soundproofing.

    Great work, but for such a large, flat surface, there is clearly not enough decor. Perhaps an element made of brass or not large engraving, with a golden patina.

    Your work is excellent bro... but your video is not educational especially for beginners, it is for experienced carpenters..After you make the cuts or grooves, you should have shown to the camera and also you do not show on which side of the box you're working, so that's slightly confusing...
    But I must admit that your work is good, clean and very precise...
    Try to make step by step educational videos so that your knowledge is useful to others and doesn't remain only for experienced 🙏

    you should never glue a solid wood panel if it starts to move with seasonal contraction and is held back by the glue it could break in half

    • @dkbuilds
      @dkbuilds  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the tip Simon! In this case, the solid wood top is in a loose groove and is only glued in two central points, to allow for expansion and contraction outwards. I understand seasonal contraction very well and always take it into account :)
