- I wrapped a present with a ribbon made 100% from wood! The bow, the loops, and even the wavy ribbon are entirely wood and look freaking awesome. The wooden box is made from walnut. The ribbon is walnut and maple, shaped to look like the box is a present.

I’ve always wanted to make a wooden present box, with a flowing wood ribbon and bow. I finally got the opportunity to do it. This wood box is made from walnut, with a maple liner. The ribbon is made from maple and walnut, which was glued together to make the pattern. I wanted the box to give the illusion of being wrapped so I made the ends of the ribbon elevated off of the box top. I think it turned out pretty cool!

Due to the number people asking for the template to the bow, I made it available for free on my website. Link in the description!
Thanks white boy!!
Thanks Billy. Great channel by the way.
your nature of work is very accurate. because of the risk. the world need people like you to save it from the bad people. super like for the super artist
I made one following your guidance. You get an A+. I used regular glue and used my pin nailer to attach the bows that allowed the glue to dry. You can't see the pins. Only used one pin per bow. Thanks for all your postings. Someone asked me if I wanted to sell it. I said, yes, I will sell mine at half price - $500. LOL. I
I believe the the reason for laminating MDF for the lid is to counteract the expansion and contraction. It will help the fit stay the same.
Doubt that would counteract those forces, they're quite strong unless the wood is veneer thickness. But the piece is quite small and with wood on both sides, the 3 ply sandwich is unlikely to warp.
@@steveh8724 MDF doesn't deform unless you leave it on uneven surfaces in a humid, hot environment for quite some time. MDF is pretty stable, so it will make a huge difference in the stability. You're absolutely correct in that a 3 ply sandwich will likely remain stable ... but ONLY if you have the center of the ply laid perpendicular to the other 2 ... and then it may still warp depending on the wood, how it was dried, how dry it is when it's cut and glued, humidity level and what-not. Wood is a living thing. It breathes and no matter what you do, it's going to breathe, swell, and change slightly (depending on the wood of course) over the life of the project. No matter what you do, wood will move. It's a fact. However, MDF (and to a lesser extent, ply) will move very, very little over time because of the way it's formed. No grain means no lines on which the wood can expand and contract by any large means. So, MDF is a great way of stabilizing a wood sandwich. Sivert Berge is correct.
I do like the concept...I thought that you were going to steam bend the parts for the bow, now that would have been a challenge.. I like the box. however adding hidden hinges and a lift out tray on the inside with a nice little lock to the front would make a very nice jewelry box for one beautiful Lady.. Keep up the good work. Jim
This box is gorgeous! My mom collected trinket boxes, I have inherited her collection. She would have LOVED this one...and I AM going to make this eventually.
The box and "ribbon" turned out beautiful!!! I'd definitely love to make this project. Thanks for the great video!

Very talented. Thanks for the Demo. Great Gift idea.
Brilliant
Gorgeous box, Love it, def going to have try to make this. I know there is another video on CZcams about making one except that one is a much bigger box but same concept & similar techniques. And yes, I am also the gift wrapper in the family. Just show it off on the main living room area somewhere. It's definitely something to be proud of. Thanks for sharing.
I've only seen that one & yours now here on CZcams. So you're good, I figured you hadn't watched it, I wasn't trying to call you out or anything haha. I know your a bad ass woodworker 😊
Beautiful, put it on your shelf and look at it yourself...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Stunning, sooo creative! I believe that’s true woodworking to be that creative.

Bravissimo 👍🏿 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Amazing. This is fantastic. ♥️♥️
This is sooo cool. I just got myself an old bandsaw and can't wait to use it. Seems to be in great shape considering it's 37 years old, but waiting for one little (but important part). This ribbon and box will be on my list! Thanks for the great video.
Many of the old tools are the best ones. I expect you'll kick butt!
A friend who was a professional woodworker had many machines. He did it for decades and I just want to warn you about one thing with a band saw,; don't cut your thumb off the guy cut his thumb off he has a machine with a note taped on it in parentheses Harry cannot use this machine. So be careful one slip it's gone that's why I don't use mine and I did for a long time. I'd rather have a piece of Oak fine and kick back and and smack me in the gut it hurts it puts it down but at least there's nothing missing. Just a thought
Fantastic piece!
Very Nice from Germany 😎
Ayyye the Peter Mckinnon intro music!!
Funny how that worked out. I've been using that song for a long time in the middle of videos. Recently, I moved it to the intro. Then the other day I watched one of his videos about a camera and saw he had the same intro song.
Mate absolutely amazing!
Came out nice but Man you shouldve sanded the glue joint inside the oval ribbon parts as their visible and miter the outside flat pieces instead of butt joint, either way good job. Brings many ideas thanks
Amazing
Thank you for sharing and letting me download the bow pattern you got me out of a tight bind cause I had to make a box for a friend and had no idea how to do it so thank you .
AWESOME
Perfektno, bravo majstore. Pozdrav iz Srbije.
Excellent work for an excellent idea !
I think it looks incredible, and as you said, freaking awesome
Really enjoyed your ribbon box, turned out beautifully
That is incredible, I would put it under my Christmas tree every year
Very nice video
Awesome!!
That is beautiful!!!!!
You are a true artist and craftsman. This box is beautiful.
Thanks!
Beautiful
Gorgeous would have it as a showpiece if given the opportunity ❤💞💗
Awesome job.
hey guy honesty this is craftsmanship at its best really good work all the way from Trinidad 🇹🇹 and tobago
Awesome build.👍👍👍
Brilliant box ,did you cut the ribbon on your band saw or use a scroll saw?Nick 🏴
Because of the simple finish oils, this box is food safe. Would be great to give home made chocolates in.
Use wax paper as a lining and it's perfect!
Get the box back though lol.
Thank you for this video. I used your template and made a similar box for my mom for christmas. I had trouble trying to make the cuts with just my bandsaw, so i ended up drilling the middle of the loops out with a forstner bit and then did the inner sides with my bandsaw. I used walnut and poplar for mine. I just finished it yesterday and it turned out really nice. Thank you for all your videos. I have learned quite a bit from watching your posts and you explain everything so well. I am not new to wood, my dad taught me the basics, but he's passed on last year and yt is now my fine woodworking teacher. so thank you again for your videos. :).
While YT can never replace a loved one, I'm glad you were able to give this project a shot based on what you saw in the video. You might enjoy the one day tray video that I made. It also combines wood colors.
@@NewtonMakes I loved that video!!! That taught me how to make a tea tray for my mom! I made it for her birthday. It was my first real project. She really liked it 💜. I want to try the project again to try to do what you did with the handles. I used a dowel for mine. Thank you so very much for your reply and encouragement. I miss my dad. I think he’d be happy to see my projects. I turned his garage garage into a girly workshop ;) I’m still building up my shop, but i really like working with wood. Thank you again for your reply! It made my day!
Super awesome 👏
From Russia with love

Really cool. Wondered though if the CA glue would hold long term.
Very creative! Like it.
As Bobby Duke Arts would say... Wewd! :P
wow!!! that so cool!
youve got a great eye! what a cool piece! love the channel!
Awesome
It might be a cliche but... "I love your work"!
Amazing 👌
I was re-watching this video and wondered if you would use the scroll saw on those round parts of the ribbon now that you have one? I didn't think you had one in 2020, but may be wrong. Your work is so creative.
Very cool man!
That is excellent!
I want one! ❤️❤️❤️
Dang that box is crazy cool !!!!
Very cool!
How did you come up with the ribbon shapes? Do you have templates?
I feel like it’s perfect for an heirloom.
