I played the version of Half Life for the dreamcast. I had the exact reaction Mr. Camobot had to the PS2 version. It really was wonderfully and completely put together, besides the loading times; That killed it. I mean, you would be loading for at least two minutes. Besides that, it looked great, it played great, surprisingly enough with the dreamcast controller, which one would never think any PC game would translate to. It's a shame it did not get the official release; Almost as if, if they could warn people about the load times with a sticker or something, it would have done very well.

@@hmv1405 It's really because Valve has no reason to update those old console games since they've always been primarily PC developers. The reason quake 2 and Duke Nukem and all those even older games have been ported to PC is because of ties with Microsoft, and licensing. Valve probably doesn't even have the licensee to go back and update their games. Maybe on the Xbox, but definitely not the Playstation.

Didnt mention the Dreamcast and I know some people here have already said something about it. There were straight up strategy guides and interviews of Randy Pitchford promoting and showing off the port to gaming outlets. It was THAT ready to being shipped out the door.

The PS2 port is surprisingly good. I like that you can temporarily "save" your game without having to write it to the memory card every time, given how slow that is (though obviously you'll want to use the memory card before turning the console off). The co-op and vortigaunt modes are also great additions. I wish they were officially on the PC version. It's also worth noting you can play the co-op solo. It's harder and you have to switch between characters but it's entirely doable.

    • @sebastianaliandkulche
      @sebastianaliandkulche Před 7 měsíci +2

It kind of reminds me to the memo system in the Final Fantasy games. I wonder what other games save in the ram. Ram is precious in old consoles.
Speaking of Coop, i like to put the companion as an strategic turret and wait for enemies to come. It has incredible good aim in PS2 and it can shoot targets even from far away. Sometimes it can waste too much ammo, but if you shoot alongside the AI enemies fall down quickly.

Half-Life for Dreamcast is a console port of Half-Life for the Sega Dreamcast developed by Gearbox Software and Captivation Digital Laboratories with the assistance of Sierra Entertainment and Valve Software. It was cancelled only a few weeks away from its projected release date. What's so funny is that they did released a Half-Life Dreamcast guide book but never the game yet there is a way to play it if you can fine the ISO and burn it on a CDrom disc and play it on a real Dreamcast console.

The first time I played HL2 and the episodes was on PS3 with a friend beside me. We both had become valve fans through tf2 on pc but wanted to experience the other games together. It was a blast. Of course, since we were kids we weren't bothered by the FPS until EP2. I remember vividly becoming so frustrated at the parking garage when you could not turn quickly enough to face the enemies because of the stuttering. Way before this I had an X360 and remember playing the L4D demo over and over again because I wasn't allowed to play 18+ games. If you ever get a Dreamcast (or try an emulator) give the canceled HL1 port a try.

I was one of those gamers who bought Half Life 2 for Xbox in 2005. I didn't have a beefy enough PC at the time (which sounds hilarious now) so I was just stoked to play it. The main issue with it besides the framerate was how often it would need to load, but unless you had played it on PC you wouldn't notice.

Never had consoles since Sega Mega Drive days. Because I just jumped right on to PC platform and played the rest there. So yeah, I completed all Half-Life games on PC, starting with Half-Life 1, Blue Shift, Opposing Force and ending up with Half-Life 2, Half-Life Episode One and Half-Life Episode 2. And then some on top of that, like Black Mesa for example or Entropy Zero. Exclude Half-Life Decay, because it is not on PC and Half-Life Alyx, because I don't have VR because it is too damn expensive.

The orange box on ps3 had a issue: the sound! Dont't know if it was just me but sometimes the game (mostly half-life 2 series) would get a bug (i guess) of the sound, and everything would sound like it was under water.

Yeah, that's the incredibly annoying crackling sound glitch. Comes and goes seemingly at random and can last anywhere from 20-30 seconds to 5-10 minutes. Easily worse than the frame rate issues for me, and unfortunately affects all games in the Orange Box on PS3. I don't know if this is true or not but it may have been caused by a PS3 firmware update.

    • @sebastianaliandkulche
      @sebastianaliandkulche Před 7 měsíci +3

There are a lot of mini changes in the PS2 port that i may not remember:
-The main menu is different, with a new theme composed that wasnt on PC.
-HL Decay (fun fact, Kleiner is mentioned here)
      -Split Screen deathmatch
-Plenty of bugs were fixed, especially in the PAL version, making it even to this day the most polished version of the game.
-For some reason the PAL version of the game reuses the shotgun sound from the original PC release (but multiplayer still uses the regular HD sound).
-AI was improved, in particular marines, which now can return grenades.
-New easter eggs added to the game. In particular, cheat codes are unlockable, by searching in different areas in the map. There is one hidden in Decay as well.
-Long jump now can be executed by doing a double jump. It also uses the Opposing Force MP sound effect.
-In the load/save screen you can see that every chapter has a dedicated picture to it, something it wouldnt appear until HL2.
      -New optional lock on system
--Brackets on interactive objects such as buttons.
      -HUD has a new icon
-HD pack looks WAY more detailed (i wouldnt tell all of the differences except that the health station now shows how much you can be healed, similar to HL2). Some maps are also slighty bigger, others were slighty changed and some of the textures were changed to look more realistic.
-The HD revolver now has a proper reload sound. In PC there wasnt any sound at all.
-A little change from Blue Shift returns in the Training, apart from the new exclusive intro: You lose all of your weapons when meeting the first security guard
-Some few differences from the original launch version return, included view bobbing, the multiplayer score, the unused green 9mm ammo item (though is only used in multiplayer and Decay), and the weapons available to pick up in the deathmatch maps.
-Half Life Uplink can be played through the extras menu if you had the disc of the playstation magazine number i dont know.
-In the multiplayer mode there are a couple of differences as well: Deathmatches are 2 player only, weapons are invisible except the crowbar, there is a bar that shows when the weapon ends to reload and there are six characters to choose from.
-The deatmatch maps are a selection of some of the PC version (not all of them) and a couple of new maps exclusively to this version.
-There is no autosave, so remember to save manually (or quick save which saves in the ram temporaly).
-When the credits finish, the game doesnt softlock in the credits screen but it returns to the main menu.
-There is an alternate ending, if you finish the game as a vortigaunt (with the cheat code).
Sorry if i forgot something, lol.

I'm currently thinking about giving the PS2 version a go. I've oviously played the original pc version hundreds of hours back in the day, but if I remember correctly the last one I played was the Dreamcast version many years ago. After that I've only played the H-L2 (and the Episodes) on PS3 and X360. I'm definitely starting to feel a need to return to the lovely gray corridors of Black Mesa.

I didn’t know the performance was bad on Xbox back in 2005 😂 without a PC to compare it to. I also remember HL2 dropped on the original Xbox a week before Xbox360. So it was overshadowed in the console space a bit, before the Orange Box in 2007.

I like how the console versions feels more arcady.. the loading screens are less and the complex crosshair makes them look less technical! Even the fact that you can't acess console commands make them feel more "video gamy" with a "y" in the end. The first time I played half life was on consoles, so there is also that! The Orange Box on the console has this cool menu with music and the background showing some content of the game, made it feel more alive than the pc versions with those simple menus. Also, the Half Life 1 on PS2 has these small things that makes it feel so different, like animated healing stations and everything else mentioned here. Also, the menu here is way more interesting than the Pc version as well. The music, the colors.. if only they ported Opposing Force as well, the pack would be complete! I wish HL1 came to Xbox as well, would love to play it on my series x. Another thing that I like is the shooting, It feels better to me to shoot with the controller trigger! Specially the shotgun and the gravity gun, grabing stuff and throwing feels more powerful, specially with the vibration. Also, you can make gordon spin forever with the right stick.

It's honestly wild that HL2 got an XBOX port instead of being a 360 launch title. Just a weird decision. Also there are a few little trims to the levels in the XBOX version, but I'm not sure how major or how many. You should also check out the Dreamcast port of HL1.

I can play HL2 on my laptop with RTX 3050Ti in full HD. If there is full controller support, I would play it on my 50" OLED via HDMI.
Alternatively, I can play it in 30fps and 4k on the Series X. I still have the Orange Box. Auto-aim sounds pretty interesting on Xbox.
How would you play it? Never played a Half Life game before.

I played a demo for Half-Life 2 back in the day and eventually borrowed the PC discs from a friend but I actually beat HL2 on OG Xbox renting it from Gamefly and it was amazing. I will always remember how the ending literally took my breath away. I was not ready for what was going to happen. I played it with some headphones blaring from my amp that I still use today and it was so visceral I gasped when it happened. I'll never spoil it for anyone. Just play Half-Life. Any gamer should. And if you love Half-Life, play Half-Life: Alyx.
