Is this Asghar Farhadi's chance to break even further into Oscar race? TWITTER: / expert_oscar / withbrotherbro DISCORD: / discord LETTERBOXD: letterboxd.com/theoscarexpert/ letterboxd.com/brotherbro/
Whew. Just done watching this beautifully made movie. I was drawn in from the start. Being American, it was such a delight seeing the close bonds of family and community in the Iranian culture. Everyone in this movie was excellent. Please, everyone see this masterpiece
I just saw this too . So different than any other movie I’ve seen lately . A very complex story told simply where I didn’t really know who to feel for at any time . Nothing is simple . Almost hard to watch at times because it was so gut wrenching.
That's what we call a film. I know it might be repetitive (and perhaps farhadi should bring something more unique now) but growing up watching indian films, these Iranian films have been very eye opening to me. I used to think films must have a hero, heroin, villain, songs, drama 😂. European, american, Korean films are better because of their high budget but asgar farhadi always delivers having limited resources.
The reason for Iranian films having a beautiful execution, impeccable acting, and cinematography to bring tears to anyone's eyes, is because of the extreme restrictions imposed by Iranian censor board. Because Iranian filmmakers do not have the option of going for song and dance, half naked women, or to be honest anything that is deemed scandalous in the strict eyes of Iran's censors. Even a scene with a mother hugging her adult son is not allowed. Iranian actors often look more dishevelled & underdressed in their films than they do in real life. All that is left is to find other creative ways to tell a story, which leaves us with the most human, realistic, daily life depiction of people going about their daily lives with very subtle political undertones. This is why Iranian cinema is so artful and brilliant. However this is not to say imposing strict restrictions on every film industry is the answer. That will only result in most countries with a dead cinema. However Iran has a history even before the restrictions of having a rich tradition of filmmaking. This, paired with a checkered history of war, political tension, economic tumult & death, makes for a meaningful and extensively pensive filmography which strikes anyone with the truth of the human condition minus all the embellishments, masala and oversensitization. This is why it has thrived, with the tireless efforts of Abbas Kiarostami, Asghar Farhadi, Samira Makhmalbaf, etc.
Theres one thing a really want to know... Did the woman who her husband would be hang is also a woman who claims the bag? I cant really tell because they looks similiar but also not really. If they are same person, then I kinda disappointed that none of them recognize her in the charity building... Sultan and Farkondeh looking for her for days and they have picture of her, also the charity woman saw the picture and just after that she met again with the woman... I mean, really? At least they should wonder when they saw her.
Here are my useless Cannes awards predictions (since it's a new jury every time thus fickle af) Palme d’Or: Memoria Grand Prix: The Divide Jury Prize: Drive My Car Best Director: A Hero Best Actress: Renate Reinsve - The Worst Person in the World Best Actor: Simon Rex - Red Rocket Best Screenplay: Lingui and Titane (tie)
Good job, but I think you should talk less about the Oscars and more about the movie itself. In the the end the movie lives and every body forget the Oscars.
Been a Farhadi Fan for a long time but this film is a big let down. He was aiming for sympathy for his character from the audience rather than empathy which he was a master at. He lost it with his previous film Everybody Knows and with this film its clear he lost it like anything. All the good reviews are those of who can't spot shit from gold.
Azadeh Mehdizadeh is the women who made the original of this, check it out on CZcams, just put in her name and it will come up. This guy stole this one...

The children of heaven, directed by Majid Majidi was nominated for Oscar as the best foreign movie. BUDGET: $500 when was made.
