First of all, hey from Lorton! Second, I think this is what's going on with my 2014 FLHP. After 30ish miles or so, when I get home and look at the crank case, it's got a decent amount of some type of sludge on it. I'm assuming it's dripping down out of the air filter housing, since when I've taken the air filter off, it's got a decent about of oil built up in there. I may swing down your way one day and have you take a look.
Thanks buddy, What I have seen with a CZcams video I've seen having too much pressure build up inside the crank case, so what he did was drill a small hole just below the DipStick and that helps to cut down on the pressure build up inside the crank case?? Will follow up for you and try to hunt down the particular CZcams video I'm talking about, Cheers, Teddy
A bit of confirmation bias, but I used to have oil in the airbox and think that was normal. Then I started to have some oil weeping from the rocker covers. Then my bike showed symptoms of running hot and oil pump cavitation. During that time leaks in the oil pan started. All signs that this filter/check valve is plugged or sticking and the hot gas has no where to go. And I currently have none of the oil in the air filter.
There is a connection between the oil tank and the crankcases that is there to let the oil tank vent excess air pressure into the cases. Said pressure then releases through the head breathers into the air filter carrying oil with it and clogging the airfilter and supposedly burning in the engine - right ? , OK then use that oiltank/crankcase vent as your engine breather, replace the head breather/airfilter mount bolts with solid bolts and make another vent in the oil tank. I have done it on my '10 Dyna by drilling and tapping the filler neck and using a fitting and hose via a one-way breather valve to the atmosphere, and on my '06 Sportster I fitted a 'T-piece' in the breather line where it fits behind the oiltank. That also goes though a one-way valve and then to the atmosphere. I ain't got an early Dyna/Softail/Tourer/later Sportster or M8 so I cannot offer any advice there- you'll have work that out for yourself, but these are only motorbikes, not spaceships - think about it you damn fools.....
Just be aware if you upgrade to the J&P Cycles Rocker Box breather kit it doesn't come with the longer bolts that you need. It would have been REAL nice if they told you that an ordering .I ended up using the original part with new gaskets and breather sponge
A few things to check, first once you replace the strainers due to old leaking make sure you replace the air filter. If its leaking the air filter is already soaked and will likely continue to leak out even if you replace the strainers. Also, make sure you are not on the high side of your oil level on the dip stick. somewhere in the middle of the safe area is fine. This can also help.
Would this problem cause your exhaust to smoke a huge cloud of smoke im talking James Bond smoke screen people behind you slowing down because they can see shit?
what is the valve breather ..breather .. so I removed the junk strainer and now is more happy long time ago (2 years ) . cero problems and happy engine ..
Hello, the breather is the system designed to vent crankcase pressure. The passageway, the strainer that you spoke of, and the rubber tubes in the air box are all part of the breather, sounds like you replaced the strainer which is a commonly overlooked part of the breather system. Great Job!
Oh god this is painful. There are many more things that contribute to that problem. The least of which is what this guy is addressing. Please consult an experienced HD technician for the whole story.
and let me guess- the idiots that cut their push rods while changing the cam tensioners, because they didn't want to spend an extra hour removing the tank and rocker boxes end up doing it anyway. This is the NUMBER ONE reason I tell people- DON'T CUT your rods; you need to take a look upstairs, you're NOT saving any time. It's an exercise in stupidity.
Ok sir, no reason to get upset. I don't currently have a video for this. Simply, the tank is removed, the black heat guards are removed (these are the hard plastic guards that block access to the rear rocker box cover on either side of the motorcycle), The top rocker cover on each cylinder is removed and the breather strainers are readily seen and accessible from there. Should be two 3/8 bolts to remove the old ones. Hope this helps.

Great info! My bike started drooling last year. I had no idea those breather filters were in the rocker box.

Could it be the round umbrella seal like flaps go bad as well from heat ..? Not sealing as well.

Thank you... have 2 Twin cams... one over 30k and the other just approaching.
Just had a replacement kit installed, but it only helped a little. Still puking oil at 70+ mph. even in cool weather.
Your spring and the over pressure relief valve may be getting stuck that’s in the oil pump

Look into the oil pump or piston rings thats what I am finding on my research.

These replacements are Harley factory parts. You can get them at your local Harley dealer. They come in a kit of two.
