The first thing you should own
Is money, I'm talking likely 5 to 10 times your monthly income in hard cash
And that aside basic home appliances
God, living by oneself is expensive :'(
My son is about to move out of the dorm but we got him a âdorm in a bagâ before moving in. Which is of course an awkward size (twin XL) so as he is about to move into his first apartment we will need to get him a new bed and sheets/blankets, which is kind of annoying.

I'm 23 and my mom always insists on buying my bedlinens for me, cause she knows I'll go for the cheap stuff. But man, comparing the linens she picks to the ones I've bought in the past... There's a world of difference. Shoutout to my mom she knows her stuff

This video screams "let them eat cake!" I'm lucky enough to have inherited some very good quality furniture, but I would be sleeping on the floor if that wasn't the case.

As someone who worked at an animal shelter for 10 years: NO WE DON'T. Or at least call and ask ahead before assuming. Maybe other shelters are in a different situation, but the Battle of the Bed Linens was never ending where I worked.
We used to get literally tons (as in so many bins full it would literally weigh over 2,000 lbs) of sheets and pillow cases. Way more than we could ever use. We ended up partnering with a homeless shelter in the city and passing a lot of better-condition sheet sets on to them.
We never used fitted sheets whatsoever--too messy because they don't lay flat. Bed sheets had some use, but they're kind of too thin to be comfortable. Comforters were hit or miss; we used them for some things but washing them was a real problem with only one washing machine set in the building. Stuff with tassels, buttons, etc pose a choking hazard to many animals. Now throw-sized blankets... Those were something we could never get enough of!
Anyway, bottom line, call and ask before donating to make sure your utems will truly be used. đ

@@fazdoll We used towels a lot. Fluffier than sheets, and a good size for cat cages. Also good for cleaning. Most rugs/mats typically got tossed. Some shelters might use them depending on what kind of flooring and cleaning practices they have.
I cannot stress this enough, just call and ask the shelter ahead of time to see what they need. Needs also change over time, depending on how much the local community is donating.
Old carpet, ask first. The bound carpet squares might be used in cat cages depending on the place. But unbound is a hazard.

I'm took flatware to a new level... how many of us grew up with the family 'silver' only coming out on special occasions 3x's a year? I was given the family silver decades ago. Normally sat on a shelve and only time it moved was when I moved locations. A couple of years back.. I pulled it out, removed the flatware in the drawer and replaced it with the silver .... my thought was and is... every day is special, enjoy things now!

I use the sterling every day, I also don't mind the extra 2 minutes to use the sliver cream after breakfast!

I have the metal rainbow cutlery set and it feels so good and fun to look at. I use it at work and its instantly recognizable as mine, and the colours give me extra happy-brain-molecules to get through the day.
This is the definition of everyday luxury. Getting to use something everyday that you truly love and that makes you happy everytime you touch it, use it or look at it.

It makes you happy and thats all that matters. My mom got them and we've had a few since I was 15, I think they're tacky and ugly but I'm also too used to them.

I'm going to tell people to KEEP DIYing. About a decade ago I fell in love with patinaed metals and a variety of different wood tones. I kept trying and I sucked. Bad.
I was almost 50 when I hit a point in my life where I had TIME and I dedicated myself to learning how to faux finish. I poured myself into it and I practiced and practiced. I really loved it that much.
Just six years later, I've got an industrial hallway with rusted steel panels on the ceiling (1/4 inch utility plywood), a salvaged old galvanized shelf (scavenged dresser drawers I attached together), an ancient mirror on the wall (an old door I painted), and concrete walls. NOBODY knows that any of that stuff is faux until I encourage them to touch it. Many of my sample boards are now genuine art pieces. I've got people wanting to hire me and I've turned them all down.
There was a funny moment when the exterminator was walking through the room as I was painting the steel panels. He asked, "Are those cast iron sheets or just regular steel?" I blinked up at him in confusion. "These are wood." Here I am sitting on a stool, paintbrush in my hand, paints dolloped on my palate, *actively painting*, and he could NOT get it. I explained in a bit more detail. He scowled at a panel, then began to tap it with his wand. Took awhile for his brain to accept that it wasn't metal.
My husband is building me a studio right now and he's the pickiest, most depressingly HONEST person I know. He's got the savage honesty of the average six year old. But now when he comes home from a business trip and I surprise him with a concrete island, he has NO clue if it's real or paint until he asks me. I've got a seven year old faux 'bronze' barn door that's horrific. I mean it's REALLY bad. I was dying to take it down, but my husband told me to leave it for a little longer. "Every time you're not happy with a piece, go look at that door and see how far you've come."
This is how artists are born. A combination of admiration for something really beautiful and the guts to TRY. And try again and again and again. The love of your thing will heal you after a defeat and keep you wading back to the paint. This is how my husband became a woodworker, my son became a blacksmith, and my daughter became a nail artist. This is how my mother became a pastry chef many years ago.
Come when your muse calls and DIY your hearts out! Admit when it's bad and learn from those creative experiments, but also take heart when you do better. Build on that and keep playing with your art. In ten years, you'll be an actual artist and people will marvel at your 'talent.' (More blood, sweat, tears, and practice... but call it what you like.)

I love the furniture my husband builds so much more than anything I could buy in a store. Everything fits perfectly and is sturdy. Unfortunately, with the price of wood, usually the furniture costs more than IKEA stuff.
But a lot of this rubbish is chucked out after a short period of time, people dont want them and the original piece of furniture was ruined

What I like most about Nick's videos is that he is not particuarly aiming at the high end individuals. His tips seem to be for average people like myself who seek some deco ideas that won't break the bank. He also makes it clear that his suggestions are not for everyone and if you like what you have, go for it. I watch these videos for the entertainment value and his sense of humor.
why do people need to be actually told that X idea/style/concept/fashion may not be for everyone ? why do people need to be comforted that it's ok to not like/prefer a concept/color/idea/fashion or that it is ok if you do ??? why do every 3 words spoken today need to have a disclaimer attached ???
Nick actually disses the idea of spending money on high-end things just for the sake of spending money. Heâs not against high end stuff exactly, but he definitely wants people to be able to find things that fit their style.
He gets that $500 for a new sofa is a big spend for most of us.
I do like his emphasis on finding good quality products. High quality doesnât always mean more expensive, but it will last longer than a poor quality item.

I am in my late 40âs, my living room curtains came from the childrenâs department and Iâm not the least bit ashamed. They are my favorite curtains ever, navy blue silk with a subtle silver storybook castle pattern. They make me happy every time I see them. I also have several diy situations around my house (I even made my kitchen counters, used resin and mica powders, turned out gorgeous, saved thousands) but Iâm an artist, making things is what I do and I agree it isnât for everyone. A little whimsy makes me happy, and by pairing those pieces with more refined, patterns/items itâs actually pretty easy to make most things feel grown up or even, dare I say, sophisticated.
Maybe thatâs a good video idea?Take some of those more whimsical items, for example: the iridescent silverware, and show how pairing it with the right plates and tableware can change it from childish to whimsical sophistication. Putting frames on posters is also a good, albeit more basic, example of this.
I'm in my 30s and most of my furniture is IKEA. It's simple, it's classic, it really is my style (light, airy, Scandinavian, light wood with richly colored textiles). I think, as long as it's paired with more sophisticated (framed!) artwork, beautiful rugs, textiles, plants, and tasteful knickknacks, it's fine. But that's just me.
I agree with that. It looks like you've added your personality in there so it doesn't give the showroom effect.
Yes, the rugs and textiles are what carries it into a different zone.
I think the main difference is that itâs been curated by you, itâs not just everything Hemnes or a copy of a showroom display.
Most of mine is IKEA, too. But I also have vintage IKEA pieces, and everything except a couple bookcases are solid wood. I'm soon going to DIY one Expedit/Kallax bookcase with paint and wood veneer. I have a friend who is a cabinet maker so he'll make sure I do it right. đ„°

I think IKEA looks thin and like pressed board in a lot of cases. Better stuff is at any thrift store if you have an eye.
At 50, I'm allowing myself to enjoy the beauty of color. Call it color therapy. The iridescent oil finishes are super attractive, fun and a joy to see. It might seem childish, but what does it really matter? It's fun and makes me smile. I currently use silver flatware, but it's from family, not something I've invested in. Will I be getting a full set of the flatware with the oil iridescent finish? Absolutley. Because it is a joy to look at. Color therapy all the way Babee.
Walmart has a bunch of silverware and cups in that iridescent finish, I have a goblet and a metallic mug and Iâve been very tempted to get more. If it makes you happy go for it! âșïž
53 and 100% the same here. Also autistic, and letting myself have "childish" things that are sensory pleasures. I'm looking at that flatware too, even though I inherited two sets from my mother. Happy to break those out if there's ever a formal dinner, but that would be fun just for the two of us.
Same. I love color and I love rainbows and Iâm 34. I was actually thinking about getting some lights for my bedroom to jazz it up. Who says that just because youâre an adult you have to stop using color? If anything crisp all white or beige anything is a bore and doesnât have any personality. Embrace your colors if thatâs what you like! :)
I love colors too and also am a kid at heart. My bedding is geared for a teen and Iâm 37. I have plates and bowls geared for kids because theyâre cute and make me happy.
Iâm also a doll/plushie/toy collector.
Rainbow anodised metals are my favourite thing. I'm waiting until all the "too mature" people decide it's tacky and childish so I can start stocking up at the op shops. I know they'll be the butt of jokes about people from the 2010-20s, but I'll rock my version of burnt orange.
The bedding advice should also apply to towels. If I'm staying at your place I would love to not have to use your old Mickey mouse towel that you've had since you were 15. Get yourself a nice set of bath towels that go with your bathroom or something neutral.

My 28 year old son with severe autism loves sleeping on a couch. So I searched for a futon that would fit his 6'2" size and found one at Target that was around $500. It's nice and he loves it. I definitely agree about the sheets and the dishes. I stopped using the cheap ones years ago and now love the bamboo sheets. And recently I hid all of the melamine plates and bought vintage Blue Onion plates. When my husband asked why, I simply said that we're adults now. We're both 56 and he recently retired.
I'm glad you found a sleeping solution. It can be so challenging. We have lugged a too large bunk bed around to different homes because it has been our sleeping solution for my son.

Confession: I thought Nick was coming for my strip lights (me, a woman of almost 50) but it turns out I am usually doing them right. HoweverâŠI do use them as subtle holiday decor & can make them go red/green or orange/purple for certain over the top holidays đ .
I JUST got my first set of strip lighting, for my China cabinet. I LOVE it :)
I love my undercounter strip lighting in my kitchen! We usually keep it on a very subtle blue/green as our backsplash is a very desaturated blue subway tile and it looks lovely.
I think that's the perfect way to do it. It's better than extra decorations that would require storage most of the year, and already fit in to your current design
If Ikea is the only thing that works in your budget, I recommend just not getting everything from the same line! Mixing up the textures and finishes and styles can go a long way to stopping your place from looking like an Ikea showroom while still getting some of the benefits of affordability
Perhaps also throw in some thrifted items. Use Ikea for the main stuff but thrift accessory pieces like side tables. Mixing a little vintage in will stop it from seeming like a showroom.

Good idea. In so many ways, Ikea is the starter-designer shop. You can have your first go at having something really nice, with ideas on how much nicer it could be, and then as you go through life, you can graduate to better ideas đ
And, if you know what you are doing, it's fun to hack Ikea. If, however, you're following 5-minute crafts, you're probably (definitely) not doing it right. My daughter is very crafty and has hacked several pieces to fit her style. She and her last roommate turned an entertainment center into a work of art with a Alice in Wonderland theme. Of course, she also mixes in vintage pieces she inherited from her grandparents.
Thatâs what I was thinking too! I think what makes IKEA-strewn spaces look immature is when theyâre too matchy-matchy. They look, in those cases, like they belong to someone who just moved out of their parentsâ house for the first time and havenât figured out their style yet, they just happen to need a coffee table and tv stand and end tables because theyâve never had a living room before, so they got all of the LACK ones because they were cheap and next to each other. Or they havenât figure out their own style, so they copied a room from the IKEA store or catalogue rather than choosing individual pieces that work for them and their style.
Iâm 27 and the best wedding gift I got was nice flatware, plates, cups, and a dinning set. I appreciate it so much. I love my aunts for doing that for me bc it was pricey!
My wedding, kitchen dish sets must have been the sale items. I got 4 different sets of beige dinnerware sets. None of the guests were local enough to return. And I don't like any of them, but we chose the least offensive and worked with it. We kept a 2nd set. And the other 2 got register as wedding gifts.

I honestly donât trust anyone else in my circle to agree with my expensive taste so Iâm trying so hard to convince my fiancĂ© we should X the registry because we have what we need. But really I just want to control the quality of our home goods when itâs time to swap what we have for something nicer đ

The part about the futon was funny to me. We recently got a futon mattress for guests (we just roll it out on the floor in the study) and a few weeks ago we wanted to test it out ourselves. My back issues got better immediately and three weeks later we are still sleeping theređ
Probably because of sleeping on a hard surface/floor provided for better support. You regular mattress may be too soft. Have you considered a firm mattress topper?
I had sciatica that got really bad. I found a full size futon mattress on Craigslist for $30. I put it on my tatami mats and slept on it for years. I couldnât go back to regular mattress. My futon is stuffed with cotton, thick and heavy, and always protected under numerous sheets and rugs (yes I put 4x6 size flat weave or woven rugs on it).
I had a futon mattress for 40 years (!) and only just got rid of it because an invalid had an accident on it. It was a real futon with about 5 inches thick of pure cotton batting inside, and a removable, washable sheath. I used to air it outside in the sun for days. It was probably the most comfortable mattress I've ever had. I got rid of the sofa frame years ago when I got Pottery Barn furniture, which I just recently replaced, also.
I love our futon in my lady cave/guest bedroom. I've napped on it and found it's more comfortable than our bed too!!
I bought a futon mattress in college so I could have friends stay on it when they came over. But I soon found it to be more comfortable than my own bed. Then after college when I moved in with my parents and was getting back pain from their mattress I put it on top and it made a world of a difference. Now that I'm in my own home and having mattress related back pain I'm heavily considering just finding a queen sized futon or sewing two together to put on top of it. They're so much more comfortable.
Iâm 31 and framing posters or any artwork is a must. It definitely elevates a space.
the thing is, the term "futon" originally means a type of Japanese bedding. It's a well-made thin mattress (by comparison to Western ones) that is said to be good for your back and posture. Plenty of people still use them to this day, and it's especially useful for living in a small space, so you can roll it up and put it away during the day. And while it is thin, that doesn't mean it's uncomfortable. Also they have some exquisite looking options for bedsheets.
That kind of couch futon is definitely not the same, kinda like calling a bathrobe a kimono, haha. A bit of its meaning got lost along the way somewhere...đ
That is to say, I agree with you, that kind of futon is not very good, especially after a certain point.
This! I have a futon but spent a pretty penny on it. It was handmade by a mom and pop Japanese shop and itâs actually really comfy. I got to pick the fabric and the wood so it would fit my interior.
I worked at an animal shelter for 5 years and we always appreciated blankets and towels. A shelter is a scary place for animals and a cozy bed always helps.

Amazon has some really nice looking bamboo sheets in lots of colors for like $30. I sleep hot and bamboo really works well for me.
I loved this, and it is definitely true in my life. I got divorced and moved into an apartment by myself when I was in my early thirties. I was thrilled to be living completely alone for the first time in my life, but I didn't have a lot of money. My furniture was all hand-me-down with homemade covers that I thought looked pretty nice and created a comfortable vibe. After a few years and a few raises and promotions, I was financially better off but still collecting unwanted couches (while getting rid of the previous ones of course). My parents sat me down one day and asked, "When are you going to get a new living room set that isn't pre-owned?" It felt like they were giving me an intervention, and I suddenly I realized that I could afford to get some adult furniture and decor. The next day, I went shopping and created a really nice space for myself. It was amazing!
You can get great dishes, cups, etc at the thrift store too! Almost all of our dinnerware is thrifted and we have some really cool stuff. It also helps that I inherited a giant set of flatware from my Grandma which has circled back around to âretro coolâ.
My husband and I are passionate about out mug collection, and thrifting is soooo fun for that! I also think it's a great way to find unique decanters, tea sets, etc.

Just remember, there are also some good DIY's you should keep. If someone in the family is a good photographer, painter, or fantastic at needlepoint, it's wonderful to have something handmade by someone you care about. When I moved house, my mother offered me some of her cross stiches that she no longer had space to display. I was thrilled. I remembered these being on the wall growing up and it was so wonderful to hang them in the new place. That said, she does excellent work, so some discretion is always good.
In a friend's home, I saw a modest bathrooom styled by a teenage boy. Shower curtain featured a black and white drawing of a giant octopus. The room was completely outlined in monochrome green LED strip lights. It was fantastic - for his stage in life at the time đ

I don't think I ever really understood the whole thing with "fancy" plates, bowls etc. I had super cheap stuff from IKEA and it worked fine. I would look at the expensive stuff and be flabbergasted that anyone would pay that much. I still feel that way with the really expensive brands, but last year I bought a new set, from a legit porcelain company. The series is called Swedish Grace, has been around since the 1930s, and it is just gorgeous. I feel very adult now that I have slightly more expensive things in my kitchen cupboards. By the way, I am 35 and pregnant with my fourth child so this probably is a silly thing to feel like an adult over. đ
Mama, as far as plates, you are doing fine, at 35. We all get a kick out of something new and "nice." However Mama, at 35, I would say you are way out front of schedule, and already have some "nice" somethings. They are nice, aren't they? Extra love is always nice, fits all sizes, and occasions. They won't know if they have stuff or not, but the love of a parent can last a lifetime.
One of the best purchases of my lifetime (now 64) was at age 25. Most of my first set of dishes had broken so I saved for a few months to buy 8 place settings of plain white Correlleware. I still love it! (I've never cared for the patterned pieces, even if a new pattern looks cools, it's eventually dated.) Yes, its been around since the 60's but its the ultimate MCM dinnerware. Its lightweight and extremely space efficient.12 place settings take up very little space. Easy to dress it up or down for special occasions and can be purchased as open stock as needed. I stacked 8 place settings in a double layer of cheap plastic market bags once, to take to work for our architect's last day party - we went with a New Orleans Funeral theme - and he was so taken with the design of the dishes he insisted on helping me wash up just so he could "experience" them better.
Now almost 40 years old, no chips, no horrible scratches, new pieces blend right in. Only one cereal bowl has ever broken - approximately 5 minutes after I removed them from the first box, my cat swatted the bowl off the countertop and it split in two. I was heartbroken, as they weren't open stock at that time. Dialed the company's 800# asking if I could buy just one bowl - and they sent me a replacement for free!
We use white Corelle too. It's fantastic and classic.
I mix in some vintage Fire King and Pyrex too (and use my Pyrex and Corning baking dishes daily, some of which were given to me as hand me downs when I moved out 30 years ago)
I lived in Japan for about a year and a half, imagine the space issues of an apartment in Tokyo. Being able to fold up your futon and store it away on the closet is an amazing way to create space,itâs basically putting you bed away instead of making it in the morning. It also set me up with a love of a good firm mattress. Of course, having tatami mats flooring is different than say tile or wood, but doing a futon like itâs meant to be done, thatâs a worthwhile arrangement in say any space poor situation.

Totally agree! I lived in Tokyo for 2 years. A proper firm futon on tatami mat flooring was the best sleep I ever had. Now I have a firm futon on a wood slat base. I've added a body pillow for further support - they are amazing :)

I found some really nice vintage silverware at the Salvation Army for about 40 cents each. So you don't have to spend a lot to get something good.

When I left for grad school (decades ago), my mom gave me a set of dishes from the local flea market. They weren't *quite* vintage at the time. I still use them. The melamine stuff, not in my home. I've seen lovely stuff in a hospice thrift store, complete (or near enough) sets of dishes, glassware, etc.
I was lucky enough to pick up a full set of the same stainless steel cutlery that my parents were given as a wedding gift in 1977 and the cool thing is I've been able to add to it through thrifting so I've got serving spoons and fruit spoons and salad servers. None of it has cost me much and it's really good quality. Once you use good vintage steel cutlery you'll never go back to flimsy modern 'steel'.

Edit: I think that as I've gotten a little older, these changes really make sense and I've done some without even thinking. I got rid of my futon after college, I did frame posters (I get most of my frames while thrifting, which is also how I got my "new" 70s plates and glassware). I've moved recently, which elevated everything even more and morphed into my own style and color palette. Sorry to say I still attempt horrible DIY's. All I'm saying is that as an adult I am legally allowed to buy glow in the dark paint with my own money and nobody can stop me đ

I once stayed at the Radisson Blu Copenhagen Hotel that was originally designed by Arne Jacobsen. Saw the expensive plates at breakfast (Manufacture Rock by Villeroy & Boch) and thought to myself âyep, I need that!â Still love them every day in my kitchen, and they fit nicely with my Scandinavian cutlery from Stelton. Definitely agree good serveware is so worth it!

My parents had good Wegdwood serveware gifted on their wedding day and used it all their lives, only adding to it every now and then, or replacing a broken piece perhaps. You can still buy the exact same items today. They also had solid silver cutlery that stayed beautiful with a little care, even if we used it every single day for every meal. Pay for once, enjoy a lifetime... and leave to your children.
When I moved out from my parental home, I had an idea which worked so well: I asked my mum to give me ONE set of Georg Jensen cutlery on every birthday and Christmas (Copenhagen model) until I had enough. Then the serving set, the carving set, teaspoons, you get the idea. Those things are in my kitchen right now, being used every day, beautiful as the day I got them, 25 years ago. Plus, I saved my mum a lot of headache!
Arne Jacobsen designed St Catherine's College in Oxford, and all the furniture/fittings/china/cutlery was also designed by him - it was like walking into a design centre. But it really made me appreciate what is around me, as if it is beautiful, it makes me feel better. Most of my house is 'second hand' and restored and there is no other house in the world like it! In my kitchen I have open shelves and I only want to look at well designed food packaging - so that is one of my criteria buying food in tins. Dried food like rice, lentils, beans etc I decant into clear storage jars.
If you still want to have colored lights for whatever reason. Hue and other brands sell lights that connect to an app on your phone where you can adjust their bulbs and strips to any color, dimness, or hue. Which is also great if you want to keep them a normal color and just adjust the warmness and dimness of the light. You can even have your lights turn on automatically at set times
Got multicolor led can lights put in a while ago, absolutly love them. Lets you chanfe the entire feel of your house with the push of a button without having the light strips all over
Yea, we installed some recessed lighting fixtures a couple years back in our entertainment room and opted to go for the LEDs that lets us change it to any color, adjust the brightness and saturation, and gives some nice presets for cool/warm/neutral whites to display. They came with remotes that werenât like the typical ones you see with the strips, but we just use the app instead for fine tuning and scheduled tasks.
Absolutely love them as they make for a comfortable setup that lets me change them on the fly to match the season, holiday, adjust for the time of day, etc.
Ended up installing another set of fixtures in our bathroom and put those in it, too. Itâs wild how something as simple as lighting can change things to create a more positive space to be inâŠ
On the topic of futons, traditional Japanese futons, especially with a tatami mat underneath or even a mattress topper underneath can make for a great bed! Iâve been sleeping on one for more than a year and I love it! I especially like how you can fold it up and put it anywhere during the day, and then pull it out at night.

All this!! Iâm 24 and I agree with everything here! I always looked up to my mom and aunt and they love nice quality stuff. I used see how they would criticize an outfit that I thought was cute by saying that the fabric is cheap! I never understood that until I was in my early 20s. I started being picky with material (always go for natural fabrics), and becoming intentional with my everyday things I use at home. For my wedding I received really nice china sets, silverware, and all household essentials. I love thick cotton towels for us and our guests, really nice cotton bedding that go with my french province styles, and thrifted furniture pieces that are unique. I enjoy my home so much because of how intentional I am with it and I get so many compliments from people.

I think Iâve lived in IKEA my entire life. It was great as a child, was great in my teen bedroom, was so useful at university and now is basic enough that it fits wherever I go and can suit most styles of home. Plus the bed in the pull out sofa is actually comfort!

As a Minecraft-playing 30 year old with colorful gradient LED lighting throughout my rooms...I can totally respect your opinion re: strip lights! When I bought my house a few years ago, it came flipped with that "millennial gray" paint/vinyl flooring/carpet everywhere. As a color lover, I've been adding a bunch of rainbow accent decor to make the house feel vivid, including a bunch of Phillips Hue lights! I'm fully aware it may seem "childlike" at best/tacky at worst. I'm going for more "well-off, fun Twitch streamer" over "teenager's wonky bedroom" vibes :D

My kitchen is led strip lit set to blue, auto on about 4pm and off about 1am- and when we want the vibes it reacts to music- multicolor flash. We love it and get tons of compliments. We also have blue fairy lights auto on/off strung along photos and in plants. Iâll always love my lights. I am definitely over 30.

If you are expecting people to stay overnight and donât have a guest room and want to rely on a blowup mattress, be sure to get one that becomes full height. People past 30 really donât want to sleep on a mattress that is only 8 inches tall. As you get older, getting up gets harder.

Not always true ... I'm in my 60s, and sleep on a mattress on the floor ... and am thinking of going lower with a real Japanese futon. When I had back problems last summer, my best sleeping was on a camping pad on the floor, maybe 2" thick.
I have no problem getting down to the floor and back up ... but I work on my fitness. I'm convinced keeping fit and flexible helps postpone "old age".
Saying that's true for me does not mean it's true for any random guest. A good host will try to accommodate any guest, and that does mean a bed should be easy to use.

I think I lived just a different life. Until my 40s I think all the furniture I owned was hand-me-down or dumpster dived. Now that I'm almost 60 I do spend some on furniture, but more on crafting machines (sewing, surger etc) and electronics. While we are different people, I do love your videos and your advice has helped me changed my space for the better. You might be surprised how much of Minecraft is home decorating and design. LOL

Grandin Road has an inflatable bed that is on a frame. On its own it extends from a case as it fills with air. Itâs pretty neat, fits nicely in a closet, and gives my guests an elevated air mattress experience - literally lol

Seriously, keep your rainbow LEDs inside. But please, for the love of God, spare your neighbours from the blinking, strobing, colour-changing LEDs some people put up as Christmas decor on their balkony or in their garden. Especially if you live in the city. There is nothing that ruins my December more than the unwanted glow of strobo lights in red, green and blue, shining in my bedroom all night long.

I ABSOLUTELY agree with and appreciate every single points that you made Nick! Youâre not asking anyone to change out their entire decor every 5-10 years. Youâre here to teach doing decor right and what it means to have an elevated sense of style. I love that youâre suggesting mixing hiâs and lowâs.
Itâs a process. You can save up for the essentials pieces in your home like a decent sofa, quality beddingsâŠIâll start with those first. I bought the best sheets that my money could buy 20 years ago and still use them. I use the old, raggedy, rough sheets for my painting projects. I try to repurpose things whenever I could.
These days, there are many places that offer better quality products at reasonable price points. There are also many sales in the year. Have patience and wait for those. Choose and buy things intentionally. My hard-earned money is too precious to be wasted on something that will break down in several months or make me feel uncomfortable.
Have an open mind, listen and learn and be willing to spend the time and effort to improve your environment. You deserve it.
Thank you for mentioning that shelters need old linens. I volunteer in a small animals program and the rabbit cages are lined with towels to keep them from sliding on the bases. They are made easy to clean but not safe for the animals as sliding causes leg and hip issues. I know that they use lots for the other animals as well. Plus many animals love to cuddle with a blanket, it's comforting when they are frightened. So thank you for letting people know.
I am 28 and I am slowly but surely replacing all the stuff that I got for my first flat when I was 21. My style changed drastically since then and I so, SO badly want to get rid of my ikea furniture, but the prices for the furniture and other stuff I would want are just ridiculous at times, so it's a long, slow and sometimes frustrating process đ„ČBut it makes me cherish every new piece even more! Can't wait to finally have my dream interior!
Honestly facebook marketplace can be really good. Old, quality-made furniture is hefty so people prefer selling it when they move (and often don't know how much it's worth).
Just make sure you're searching often and using key search words so fb shows you the kinds of things you like faster!

I am 30 and finally upgraded my dinnerware! I started with two different sets in my early twenties and broke a couple things here and there and somehow accumulated random pieces that didnât match anything. It always bothered me. Because I now have young kids I decided to go with Corelle which doesnât have the luxury feel of china BUT itâs practical for us, everything matches and it looks much more polished. Itâs made me so happy!
My Grandmother passed last week but one thing she did to influence my decor was to do beautiful puzzles and frame them as art. Truly amazing art pieces lie in wait for reasonable prices.

Its amazing how everything said in this video tells about my experience of trying to transition from being a teenager to being 25 yr old adult. I replaced most of my Ikea furniture with designer alternatives and been on mission to create a more mature space. I framed my posters, changed my duvets to calm monochromatic ones and put fancy throw pillows on the sofa. Pat on the back

Apart from two pieces (chest of drawers and Bauhaus type bookshelf) all furniture/cultery/paintings/rugs all my furniture has been hand me downs, nothing matches, but it is all utterly beautiful I think, and rather eclectic. My neigbours were redoing their kitchen and chucked out a potentially superb utility kitchen which I took in, painted pale green, and it is now a really calming bedroom furniture.
What makes a huge difference is fresh flowers - so my home is awash with flowers. Not potted plants.

Ouch on the Ikea. We are nearing 40 and about 80% of the stuff we have is Ikea. Simply, because it holds up and I am not about to throw out perfectly functional furniture in good condition. My tastes have only changed when it comes to wall colour, and one of our Ikea tables is actually the one my mom bought in 1990, but sanded down with a new coat of paint. (One of my cheap DIY projects, as is our couch table that I built from scratch.) My husband insisted on buying a new dining room table and bed, and it had to be "grown up", so he spent 6000 ⏠of his money on it. He thinks it will last a lifetime, but with the kids buying such expensive furniture just causes stress about every scratch on that massive oak table.
39 and I love the rainbow cutlery I spent too long with a stuffy looking kitchen when I was married but now I get to have whatever I want and I love it! I got the knife set too lol
I adore linen bedding. I originally got linen sheets for summer (from Parachute--not an ad, ha) and found that I loved them so much that I use linen year round, including duvet covers. They get softer over time, and if you wash them correctly, they last a long time.
So in a retired Interior Designer over 60 now and I still love the purple lava lamp my mum bought me when I was 14âŠtho I do invest in good stuff for my home.

Im 31 and just cant let go of all of my fun lighting. I dont have strips, but ratcher swapped out my regular bulbs with ones that have different color options as well as white. I have different colors for different rooms and really enjoy relaxing with my mood lights đ

I am a whole lot older than 30 and I still happily have unframed posters.. they are easier to hang in a rental with blu-tak instead of trying to get permission from the real estate agency to make holes in the wall for framed pictures, because they never ever give permission to hang picture frames. My mother is in her 60s and has a house full of Ikea and it looks amazing and very cosy and elegant with the way she styles her spaces.

In case you some need to frame something, I can recommend 3M Command velcro strips.
I wouldnât hang anything too heavy with them, but if the frame is light-weight enough, they hold up nicely. Smaller frames can even include glass panes instead of plastic.
These strips are a bit pricey (compared to a screw or nail), but they work well. Besides, they can be used to hang pictures to tile wall, on the side of appliances etc. too.
And if you need to move, you only need to buy new velcro strips for the walls, because the strips behind the pictures should stay in place even when the frame is taken down. : )
