Doctor Who (1996) Alternate Opening with Anthony Ainley

  • I always thought it was very disappointing that Anthony Ainley was not afforded the same chance as Sylvester McCoy to bow out of his classic series role as The Master in the 1996 TV Movie. Instead, The Master in the movie's introduction was recast with Gordon Tipple who (based on his goatee, most visible in behind the scenes images) was presumably playing the same incarnation as Ainley.
Using clips from his appearance in the 1997 video game Destiny of the Doctors, I have recut the TV Movie's introduction to feature Ainley's final portrayal of The Master, as well as adding his name to the introductory credits. It also gave me a chance to replace those infamously awful high-pitched Dalek voices with some more fitting samples! Oh, and now the theme actually syncs up with the credits, which has always bugged me.
I think a couple of other people have tried a similar edit before, but this is my attempt at it. Hope people don't mind me trying to put my own spin on an older concept!
I promise this is the last thing I'll cobble together with that old Destiny of the Doctors Ainley footage. Probably.

This works really well, In my head I always assumed it was Ainley's Master on Trial, shame he didnt get a cameo. This makes it more clear that the master is a timelord like the Doctor and not just a shape shifter who normally looks like a snake.

Really bugs me that they never explained that. I know that the later novels tried to supply some sort of reason, but if you're randomly going to make a pre-existing character a body-stealing energy snake shapeshifter you should probably give some sort of explanation on screen...

In Behind-the-scenes photos, they even had the actor Gordon Tipple, made to resemble Ainley's Master so I think it is the same version .

Based on Paul McGanns dialog in the episode it seemed pretty clear that the Master prepared in some way for the eventuality and that the snake was just an outcome. Sort of a get out of death free card.

Production documentation from the time indicates that Gordon Tipple was supposed to be playing the Ainley incarnation, because Universal didn't want to ship Ainley himself to the States for a cameo (they were unhappy about the expense of shipping McCoy over for HIS cameo, but Philip Segal insisted).

I am surprised that no one asked Tony to be in the TVM as he really loved being The Master, he would even answer to the Master if called on the phone, there's a clip where he challenged the Sixth Doc on Saturday SuperStore one morning, prior to Mark of the Rani probably, and Peri made reference to seeing him burn on Sarn, so he was always happy to play that part. Would've been neat after Survival as well, seeing Ant and Sylv again.

I always felt that that final scene of the game lead immediately in the TV Movie and that this was what the creators actually intended.
Also, WhoFx said that they originally had the idea to have every Doctor appear as a projection during the sequence where the Master is projecting the Doctor in the eye of Harmony. It would have been a cool way to film quick cameos from Pertwee, Tom Baker, Davison and Colin Baker to have them be part of the movie as well.

You might enjoy reading this. The prologue to something I hope yo write in full one day.....
Many regenerations ago the dying Doctor decided to visit all his former companions before he was forced to become a new incarnation.
He wasn't the only visitor they received......
      Adric gripped his lapels tightly.
The Earth's image inched closer and closer to the freighter.
The boy closed his eyes awaiting the inevitable death which approached.
The hum of the engines tormented his very psyche......but wait, a familiar sound.....a Vworp....a second Vworp....a pattern of Vworps.......the sound of a TARDIS!
"Doctor!" grinned Adric "I knew you wouldn't leave me!"
A familiar silhouette slowly came into view as the trusty old Police Box finally fully appeared.
The doors opened and bathed is a strange glow and men outstretched his hand and beckoned a relieved Adric over.
Adric ran towards the sanctuary of the TARDIS towards the man.
Something wasn't right, the closer Adric got the more unfamiliar the man, or what he could make out of the man was.
Still thought Adric The Doctor had changed his entire appearance before perhaps he had again.
Adric offered his thanks and stepped towards the open doors of the TARDIS but the man blocked his way.
Dressed in black the man sneered and with a forceful shove pushed Adric flat on his backside.
The man flipped Adric the bird and closed the TARDIS doors with an evil laugh.
Adric blinked through tears as the TARDIS dematerialised.
He shook with rage as the sound of engines was all that was left.
"Why you absolute cun...." were the last words Adric ever uttered as the Freighter smashed into the Earth instantly ending his life.
Inside the TARDIS the man laughed.
The Master wiped the sweat from his brow.
He was dying, or at least this incarnation of him was dying.
Was it worth wasting his time programming the TARDIS chameleon circuit to resemble the TARDIS of his greatest rival?
      Of course it was!
      He had truly enjoyed that.
"That'll teach you for Castrovalva you like twerp!" he gasped.
Looking in the mirror The Master groaned the regeneration energy glowing hungrily ready to change his whole appearance.
"Damn you Missy" he yelled at his reflection.
The regeneration energy glowed brighter covering his entire body.
      "Nooooooooo!" he bellowed.
      The regeneration energy ceased.
"Not yet!" grinned The Master "I have so many people left to visit"
The TARDIS landed at his next destination.
The Master looked at the information of just where he was.
      KEMBEL it read.
"Hmmmm" thought The Master out loud "This will have to be a quick one"
Opening the TARDIS doors he was met with a strong wind. Dust and sand blew wildly through the air.
The Master narrowed his eyes scanning his surroundings.
      Had he missed her?
No, his eyes caught the figure of an aged woman crawling across the ground.
The Master grinned a wicked grin and yelled in her direction
"Oi Kingdom, you haven't aged well!"
The TARDIS dematerialised and the last thing Sara Kingdom ever heard was the sound of a TARDIS abandoning her to her fate.
The Master leaned against his console. Taking in a deep breath he looked at the scanner screen flicking through some familiar and some strange faces.
"Who's next he mused "Lethbridge Stewart? Grant? Jones? or the young princess of Traken?" he grinned an almost insane grin.
"This is going to be SO much fun!"

However, he did reprise the role for the final Doctor Who episode entitled 'Survival' - where the Master was supposedly killed off. He retired from acting professionally in the late nineties and played cricket up until the time of his death in May 2004 he was only 71 when he died. Baker era and one of the best one-episode companions in the show’s history (Herbert). And as awful as “Delta and the Bannermen” is, it is SO much more watchable than anything from the last two seasons.

(the rest of this is a bit long; sorry about that)
As for The Gunfighters, it really seems to me that it's a classic of Hartnell's era because it's so bad that it's funny. That's not what the standard of good Doctor Who should be. When I think of good classic Who, I think of The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Seeds of Death, Doctor Who and the Silurians, Genesis of the Daleks, Earthshock, Attack of the Cybermen, and The Curse of Fenric. Relative to any good stories from both Classic and NuWho, the terrible stories I listed in my previous comment are awful.
It's not like Classic Who was perfect all the time (another terrible Classic Who story was The Time Monster), so it's wrong to put that expectation on NuWho. And it is definitely wrong to say that "real" Doctor Who ended in 1989 (as the original commenter did). It's elitism for elitism's sake. Every era has good and bad episodes, and dismissing an entire era of a show you like for the sake of elitism strikes me as a bit odd.

@@sparshjohri1109 Ha! “The Time Monster” is one of my favourite Who stories of ALL TIME. In my opinion, it’s a wonderful example of the UNIT family in action - more enjoyable than the overhyped “The Daemons” (which is also a great story - don’t get me wrong), bittersweet because it’s the last story with the whole UNIT/Master gang but a HUGE amount of fun.
“The Gunfighters” was not “unintentional comedy”. You may think that, but Donald Cotton’s script is hysterical in my opinion. The story got a bad reputation because of the way it was presented in works like Peter Haining’s “Doctor Who: A Celebration”. But it’s immensely watchable.
Don’t get me wrong: “Delta and the Bannermen” IS bad. Like much of McCoy’s era, it’s not great. But yes: I would rather watch this story over and over again for 100 days than watch the virtue-signalling piece of excrement that is “Demons of the Punjab” even ONCE. “Spyfall”? “The Haunting of... whatever”? They both have the same thing wrong with them that EVERY story has from the past two years: Jodie Whittaker. My god is she the WORST actress I have EVER seen! It’s hard to think of an episode in a positive light when its lead character fills you with the urge to vomit every two or three minutes!
So what did we learn here today? First: just because YOU say an episode is bad has very little bearing on what others may think. And two: there is however, an ultimate truth when it comes to Jodie Whittaker: the piece of faeces that was left in my backyard by a stray cat this morning is more capable of playing the Doctor than she is.🤪
