- Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan as well as a musician.
In today’s video, I reacted to Moldova’s song for Eurovision 2024, ‘In the Middle’ by Natalia Barbu.
This was overall a catchy effort, with a nice choice regarding the live and backing track strings. However, the chorus was repetitive, and pre-chorus all too similar to a popular Florence & The Machine song.
Initial Score: 6/10

Hahhaa the girl screaming in the audience was so fun hahhaa
Well this sure is a song that exists.
Lol
Probably a contender to finish last in the first semi-final; not many people seem to be really loving this Moldovan track. I give it a 5/10 for now.
Last would be really unfair, but qualifying will be rough sadly.
@@ThaGamingMisfit Moldova allways Q, it can come top 10
Yes, a contender for last place alongside Finland, Latvia, and San Marino.
can`t wait for your reaction to Belgium 🖤 a masterpiece
Norway is my #1 but Belgium is definitely in my top 5! It really is a great song and vocal! (:
Rachel, you're a born diplomat ;). 'Inoffensive'. Haha
The staging concept is good
Moldova is amongst the last ones in the odds for now bc of the NF staging, sound quality and camera work in my opinion.
If we had the MV or the ESC staging straight away I think the odds would be a lot different for Moldova 🤔
Exactly, I hope that will be the case, there are a lot worse sounding songs this year !
It's definitely a step down from years past. Etapa Nationala was really fun though
I really like when you tell us what song you are reacting to next.
Noted - will keep doing that for future videos! I’m trying to schedule them more nowadays to plan around my work hours
Now that I watched this again, I'm not so sure about the staging. During my first view I liked the mirroring of the main singer, but now I'm not convinced there is enough "drama" and what do they actually try to tell with the song.
But I like the song as such, might stay on my playlist for at least until the end of his Eurovision season :)
They’ll change the staging anyway
Rachel, go watch SWITZERLAND NOW! This is going to be a 10/10 for you, I have no doubts about it, it's going to be your top 1 and beat Italy for the first time :D
Ahhh Italy just pipped them to the post - but wait for Netherlands tomorrow 🤭
I can't decide how I feel about this entry. It had potential to be really interesting and clever musically and vocally but doesn't quite get there. I like it ok when I come across it but forget about it after.
I really don’t know what to make of the song, they’re really going need to work on the staging as I believe Moldova is in the 1st semi final and given how stacked that is right now I don’t see Moldova qualifying 🇲🇩🇲🇩🇲🇩
I don't care for this song at all, but it was 100% worth it just to get @5:18 😊
Lol 😂
Really low in the rankings, but we know that Moldova are always the masters of enhanced staging, like, year on year (remember DoReDos?) This has a feel of Artsvik - Fly With Me - Armenia 2017
Natalia has obviously taken some inspiration from fellow 2007 entrant Sopho from Georgia.
Sopho was my winner in 2007, but this song doesn’t come close tbh
I do like this but I think it’s in danger of not qualifying
in danger? i thought this is a sure NQ
I have no idea how this one's going to do, to be honest. It may not grab people much, to be honest.
After hearing everything else so far, I can’t see this going through :/
@@ThePeaceAround I think you're right. It's quite "flat" compared to so much other stuff.
Quando ascolterai tuta Gold di Mahmood?
All I can say is this season first NQ in Semi 1.
I am disappointed by Moldova this year, I enjoyed them in the last couple of years and I was expecting some other crazy stuff from them or at least not in English. This is in English, repetitive and absolutely forgettable, except for the vocals in the last 10 seconds of the song which is not enough to save the song. I predict it won't qualify and I would be disappointed if they do in place of songs that deserve more.
I'm really looking forward to your reaction to Belgium, I've been waiting for it!!
react to Serbia next 🫶🏼
Is not going to the final
🤔
the public vote
In the national final, a woman called 'Valeria Pasha' won the televote by almost DOUBLE Natalia's votes, gaining 12 points, but came 2nd with the jury, getting 10 points. Barbu likewise got 12 but from the jury and 10 from the televote. This meant there was an awkward moment where they both got the same amount of points, 22, so the jury decided to send Barbu! This caused some outrage as in previous situations, the televote decided in a tie and it wasn't announced this change would occur. Pasha also had a lot of fans and her song was very catchy and, in my opinion, better. Valeria's song was also written by the legendary Pasha Parfeni and his wife from last year and Valeria had been one of the two female dancers that went to Liverpool with him! In my opinion, in the Middle is literally an 'in the middle' kind of song. It is an okay song but it doesn't pop out and the staging is HORRENDOUS. This is why most people have put it in the bottom three of their tops!
I actually am thankful they picked this. It’s a lot more mature. Sure, it can be boring in a presentation sense, but I find the other song a lot more boring in a sonic sense. To me, this can be saved with a revamp and a staging change (which I suspect they’ll do). The other song sounded way too juvenile to me and would’ve failed to fill any sort of un-filled niche this year - there’s way too many songs it’d be compared to.
Moldova didn't have a lot of great options this year. Or... any great options, I guess. Somebody could revamp this and make something work from it, because there's something mysterious and distinctive in here, but I doubt the will exists since it's sort of dead on arrival at ESC. It's with no joy that I say that, because I almost always support Moldova in Eurovision and personally had Natalia's entry "Fight" in my top five from 2007 Eurovision, so I like *her*, as well.
I don't understand why this song is ranked lowest on that app, it's really does not sound that bad to me, except the sound quality, but people should be ignoring that. I even prefer this song above Ukraine this year.
You’ve got a lot of the bad stuff out the way with Finland, Uk, Denmark, Germany, Latvia & Moldova. There is more great stuff coming don’t worry 😍
An average song with an average vocal - I don't think this one with qualify. I give it a 5.
Not a fan of this song. And I found the violin part really underwhelming. You see all these violins waiting to be played for most of the song, so you expect to be wowed and... you're not.
I'm sorry to say - it's a garbage year this year in terms of quality. I couldn't get to the end of the Spotify Eurovision playlist this year before switching it off.
Kudos to the bigwigs who decided that a 100% televote semi is the way to go, just to appease some fans. This song is one of those that epitomises the mediocrity this year. The other being Finland (who made me think Dr Alban became trendy again).
I believe the reason for the semifinals to become televote only (since last year) was that in 2022 there was some serious rigging in one of the semifinals by the jury of 6 of the countries. If you search "eurovision 2022 semifinal jury" I assume it will come up.
It wasn't done to please fans
