Were my predictions for Starfield correct?

  • Following Starfield’s first major reveal in May of 2022, I released a video full of theories I had made after watching it. From how Todd Howard’s mic drop of 1000 planets may work, to predictions around the quest design and gameplay.
In that video, I announced: “We can then go back to this video after the game is released to see where I was right, and where I was, most likely, wrong.”
Well, the time has come, were my predictions for Starfield correct?

DAGGERFALL is far, far superior in its ability to construct environments that foster a sense of exploration, and DF UNITY's "smaller dungeons" option compacts the thing into a tidy package that utterly destroys the newer game. Like so many before it, Bethsoft has gone BACKWARDS in game design as much if not more than they've improved on the graphical bells and whistles. Heck, even the dialogue in DAGGERFALL was more lively than the tripe we're fed here : Morgiah, for example, has more of a defined personality than Barrett - it's just that she's not voice acted.
Stop feeding me pig slop, Bethesda : I'm only *half* pig!
To wit : I went to the "abandoned robotic factory" several times in STARFIELD and used the exact same computer, in the same place, to unlock the same elevator that leads to the same upper level with, beside said computer, the exact same corpse wearing the same lab coat, sprawled in the same death position on the same cot. Rubbish. DAGGERFALL does build its dungeons from the same tilesets, but the sets are assembled in a semi-randomized fashion : here partially flooded, there blocked by a statue and over here needing to climb/levitate.

I personally feel like I wasted 70 bucks on this game. Its feels like a downgrade from any other bethesda game in terms of exploration.
Need to go to a bandit camp filled with killer pirates for some quest? Well no problem, just land your incredibly loud and big spacecraft right next to there base, literally at the front gates. you get out of the ship and they have have no idea that you are there or that your ship just landed. Like wtf. Completly immersive breaking, at least in older bethesda titles you cant fast travel to unknown locations before discovering them on foot. In this game there is no restriction to where you can fast travel to, so that gives you NO REASON to land in a zone that isn't related to a quest.. again like wtf where they thinking? Sucks I cant refund :(

Nonsense. A procedurally generated world, if done with enough attention to detail, can provide a very convincing simulation of a world, the perfect setting for the kind of adventure that they started veering away from with Morrowind.
Starfield is terrible in more ways than one, but it's not because it chose to try things that were tried with Daggerfall, but because it failed to do anything noteworthy with the concepts and ideas that were present even back then.

Nothing lackluster about daggerfall - it hasn't been beat to this day, Morrowind was a colossal disappointment, as it veered away from the path that arena and daggerfall had embarked on, and it's been downhill since then - this polished starturd is merely the latest iteration of Todd's quest to prove that he isn't just a chess club loser (he failed).

And that, with all that seemingly advanced AI, they're still using human labor for whatever reason? You'd think they'd have hordes of robots in that mine at the beginning of the game.

Funny thing is, I was one of my few friends who basically predicted Starfield in a way. Because... it wasn't too hard for me. Todd has always mentioned what was his true love with gaming. It was Arena. He compares EVERYTHING he does to Arena. He props it up as a gold standard that echoes down the generations. And when he said that Starfield was his dream game? I expected "Arena in Space" basically. With a very sort of procedural generated (in the office) set up. A lot of locations to visit but most you probably wouldn't outside of personal curiosity/roleplaying.
And that a lot of it would be about kind of coming up with your own reasons and roleplay for doing fairly simple things.
The two things that surprised me actually, was that crafting was a major part of the game. I figured they wouldn't do much of it compared to finding loot. That's usually Todd's desired state as it seemed to be. He's very much the type (and has said in interviews) how much he liked finding cool loot... and not how much he likes making cool loot. Which I suppose fits the Fallout 4 style set up of not being able to make things (like in Skyrim) but only to personalize it. I probably should have predicted that but I honestly didn't think his 'dream game' would include much crafting and gathering at all.
The other which was a pleasant surprise for me is just how little urgency is in the game. Because they haven't really had a chill plotline since... well... Daggerfall. I mean Morrowind tells you right in the opening minutes that you're a prophecized hero that needs to do hero stuff, though gives you a little breathing room naturally when you run into your Blades Contact at first telling you "Go grind XP!" basically. But Oblivion had no brakes always telling you how urgent the next step is. Skyrim had a chill moment at the start, soon as you escape Helgen with your NPC of choice telling you "We should just lay low for a while and go our separate ways perhaps". With a few other welcome chances to chill out here and there. But Fallout 76 and Fallout 4? Back to the Oblivion style of dragging you around with something that is personally important (storywise) to you and such with high urgency.
So I expected that Starfield's questline would be at this breakneck pace pressing the urgency constantly and making sure the only reason you'd have to not keep moving forward is having to consciously realize "The plot only moves when I do" and choosing to ignore it in a way that Roleplay wise didn't make sense so much.
So instead most of the Main Quest being "... do this when you can, okay?" in its state excepting a few natural points to push on towards the next bit (Around the attack on Constellation).
Quite refreshing to have the writers realize people might not want to bee line things through and give those breathing points.
Though personal disappointment for me that I hope gets changed in a future DLC? They mentioned Mechs and I was instantly filled with a sense of Joy and Wonder at having some BatteTech like mechs stomping around and getting to pilot one... only to moments later tell me "Oh yeah and there are none left they were all scrapped and tech for it sealed up permanently".
I do hope there's a DLC that brings Mechs in for some reason or another.
But all in all? I don't think I hate the game anywhere near the level most people seem to have, as for some reason out of any plausible idea it almost sounded like most people expected some BioWare style JRPG/Western RPG hybrid out of it. I went into it expecting "Space Based Arena" basically. And I got what I expected for the most part. Which was an itch that hadn't really been serviced for a long time outside of Indy RPGs with a fraction of the budget and the limitations that came with it.
The other bit that did disappoint me, but I expected it as everything after Oblivion has done it? Just how linear the "Dungeons" are. They do tend to follow that Skyrim Loop design idea more than anything else. Which is... well it's not my favorite but it can be good for what it is. I was hoping for something more old school with a more "Open" design for dungeons with multiple routes through locations and such.
I also wish I could just make my own gear instead of having to collect it. Particularly with the leveled variants that come in like Advanced and Superior. I can understand it. Todd's desired style. And to be fair, it seems to be MOST people's desired style. I just get a bigger thrill out of "This weapon I crafted with these hands was used to save the day" over "This thing I found on a body 10 minutes ago saved the day" loot based gearing. Neither is really right or wrong. I just wish the option was there for those like me.

I think the procedural generation in Starfield is at least 10 times better than No Man's Sky. The terrain gen alone squashes NMS as far as realism goes. All of it pretty much looks natural. Don't get me wrong, I love NMS. It was a huge advancement in proc gen. Even at launch, but things are pretty samey. Even planets, they have different "regions" if you click on those little microwave antenna looking things, but generally the only difference is whether the hills are tall or small, and whether there's water. One biome per planet. No icecaps even. Sure, you get seemless exploration, but every planet is Tattoine, Hoth or Endor, but with less regional veriation lol. Starfield segments all the planets allowing for actual multi biome planets. Look at all the NMS videos where someone says "I fond an Earth-like planet" no you didn't. You found a Lush, Tropical or Temperate planet. Real Earth has half of all the NMS biomes on one single planet.
Obviously Earth is the only planet I found unwhelming. I figured there would at least be approximations of IRL terrain, obviously still a wasteland, but mountains where mountains should be, flats where flats should be, etc. However, it's pretty easy to think of a logical reason why mountains have been leveled, and plains have become hilly and Rocky.
The magnetosphere is really important as far protecting us from deadly space objects. Most of them are deflected. In Starfield Earth has been without a magnetosphere for 300 years. The only defense it has against asteroids or anything else, in that 300 years, is the moon. The moon is a shield, even now, but it's like the kind of shield you have in Morrowind or Daggerfall. The Earth can't hold it up and actively block an asteroid... It's a passive shield attached to a pretty nasty dice roll. IRL, the Earth has several redundant Shields at once. The moon, the magnetosphere, the ionosphere, the atmosphere in general, etc.
