Rome, Total War. Released over 17 years ago, it is showing the signs of its age.
A remaster was surely needed; between the dated graphics, awkward wide-screen support, aged UI design, and the poor AI decision making.
But, has Feral Interactives work hit the mark, or is it simply a quick cash grab by Creative Assembly on what many consider to be one of their best games.
This is Total War: Rome Remastered.
Is Total War Rome Remastered Worth It? - Review

Hope you enjoyed the video!
What are your thoughts on the new remaster?
My Rome Total War Retrospective: czcams.com/video/SWJPkz8Tkqg/video.html
Almost 2 years later, I think the Remaster is awesome. There are so many good mods, and Imperium Surrectum has grown to be so much more epic than ever anticipated.
I haven't played the remaster yet, but it's really frustrating that they've locked the old game behind this new paywall.
Very true.
One good thing is definitely the diplomacy which used to be horrible. On higher difficulties, your allies and vassals would just abandon whatever ties you had with them and attack you immediately ending up in a situation where you had to fight on every single front. My hope is in mods.
another great video buddy. i really feel like the remasters are getting slightly out of hand across the industry. some instances like in my opinion, this one, feel like pure nostalgia mining and little else. always appreciate your insight!
ps - do you list your videos on steam? its a great way for people to see your stuff on the community section :)
Very true. Especially with things like GTA5 releasing for third time on the new consoles.
And yes I do (post on Steam), it has helped a ton with my KOTOR and Morrowind videos especially!
honestly, i like the new battle circles. very easy to get all information
It does have its ups n downs and I do like the simpler but better depth than just the cheaty AI for "difficulty" . It's not it's best as there are many good recent TWs and I'm more liking the remaster for achievement hunting and how the modding scene is going to be .
Achievements are a very good point that I should've mentioned. They atleast give a little more purpose to playing the game past the normal sense of progression.
Thanks for watching!
Really good stuff and thanks for the info!
I love your videos! Thank you
My problems with the remaster are just the UI being spread everywhere, taking attention from wherever you are looking, and the Zoom in/out going straight instead of doing a slight curve like it does in every other total war game. Otherwise its great, especially with feral having had so much dialogue with the modders. Tho I wish the UI was moddifiable
Great video! I actually can't run the remaster unless I downgrade from windows 7 (I'm a dinosaur). But this video was a great breakdown and helped me realize what I'm missing from the original (not much, aside from the future mod support).
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yep, for now you're better sticking to the original, and even with mods, it may take years for anything to surpass the mods availble for the orignal game.
Man your videos are so nice i even watched the elder scrolls ones and i dont even care about elder scrolls
I love the remastering and I like it better than the original, but I understand what you're saying. Very new for the old fans, but not enough for the new fan. Anyway, I prefer the remastering than the Rome II
I used to play Rome Total war back in the days and enjoyed but moved on after a while. So I have nostalgia for it but not enough memory to get stuck on details that might have changed. I bought the remaster and it feels like the game i played back then. I have enjoyed it for about 100 hours now so it is about run dry now that I have played all expansions. Perhaps I will do another imperial campaign or two before I move on. It has been worth it, still a solid game experience. I'm probably the target group for this game.
Yep, us nostalgic gamers were definetly the target audience for this one, rather than newer gamers, and for us, it makes sense as a purchase to rekindle our love for a classic game.
how is the AI? is it possbile for modders to improve it? or at least make them less brain dead?
Never had any issue with controls for the first Rome TW, the controls were great at the time, took little effort to master
I will admit that I was spoiled by the integration of the WASD controls from Empire onwards. The "FPS" control scheme in the original RomeTW is close enough to make it less of an issue though.
Buy it on sale especially if not interested in 4k
I liked the remaster as a whole tho given the age of this video now i can say that the modding community is catching up now.
It is the best game they've made since Medieval 2
Honestly, they made the game ridiculously easy compared to the original, and I really don't understand why they didn't fix the AI pathfinding.
it might be because its hard coded into the engine
@@weybye91 No, if you played the original, you had to really think about where you are shifting your forces, what you built and where. They added mechanics into the game without bothering to balance them out. For example, you could get the AI to a point where you turned it into the infamous "Add_money xxxx" cheat code.
The new UI looks so s''''' and cheap. Who had the idea to remove the stylish scrolls? I am never going to pay for this.
