Can you just imagine what Alan Turing could have accomplished if society had just left him in peace, much less appreciated his work during his lifetime. So tragic.
Totally agree 💜
Interesting vlog on parts of canal system rarely seen. Well done Colin with pieces to camera while Shaun muscled the locks. Good division of labour. Thanks gents. Loved it.
Right?! We stole from ourselves as a society. He was a great person.
Alan Turing was a hero who was treated in the most inhuman way, just for being gay. Thank you for featuring his beautiful memorial. X
I totally agree 💜
You can’t help who you fall in love with.
Very very touching
Steve Jobs was asked by Stephen Fry if the Apple Logo (an Apple with a bite out of it) was an intentional homage to Alan Turing. Jobs’ reply was that it was not but when he learned of Turing’s unfortunate treatment, he wished that it was.
@Daniel Hostetler I was thinking the same thing. How cruel to put anyone through such mental torture just for who they love. Even though we have moved forward since then I still feel ashamed that a 'civilised' society could treat Turing in such a way. 😔
The world owes Alan Turing so much. Thank you for highlighting the the monument to him
Least we can do!
I got a bit misty eyed with the Alan Turing part. That Trans memorial sculpture is wonderful too.
Shameful the way Alan was treated by his country xx
Thanks for showing the memorial to Turing; he remains an icon for us computer science folks. (AND he's about to go on the 50 pound note, I understand.)
That's right! 👍🏻
Alan Turing was an absolute legend. My grandmother was part of the code breaking team at Bletchley during the war which overwhelms me with pride.
I should think so too 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow Matt that’s a great story. Big respect to your grandmother. The work those people did literally turned the outcome of WW2. Until the enigma code was cracked literally tens of thousands of merchant and Royal Navy sailors were losing their lives due to being sunk by German U boats and we were weeks away from starvation, in fact that was Hitlers plan to starve us into submission. Thankfully because of people like Alan Turing and your grandmother that never happened And also saved millions in the process🇬🇧🙏🏼👍
My Dad worked with Alan Turing at Bletchley Park during ww II, as a cryptographer working to break the Nazi code on the Enigma, the Ultra Secret....one of 13 top cryptographers sent to help the Brits at Churchill’s request from the USA... so proud of my Dad💓 and Alan Turing and all the Bletchley code breakers.
Wow! You must be so proud 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💜💜💜
And after the war we and the Americans sold refurbished Enigma machines to other countries but didn't tell them we'd cracked the system.
God bless him , you and your family and everybody on the GOOD path and seeking and working towards it. Great to know thankyou for telling us.
Wonderful memories
My Dad passed away last month and I've just discovered an email from 2021 asking me to watch this video, I didn't even realise he'd sent it
Dad adored boats of all kinds & grew up in Manchester, worked as the main contractor on the Hacienda ( which was formerly a yacht warehouse/showroom ) he loved our City, he loved the canals, he loved his heritage. How amazing that I've found that email & been able to watch you guys as if he were here with me :)
Along with a final note from him below...... I didn't actually realise, we took that lovely sunny walk in 2022 all the way from Lock 91 up to Piccadilly Basin. I will miss him so much but this has really brightened my day.
Cheers - Jos ( and Rob )
'DO YOU FANCY A LOVERLEY SUNNY DAYS WALK SUM TIME ALONG IT . I OFTEN THINK OF THE AMAZING DAY WHEN YOU TOOK ME THE FIRE STATION AND WE SAT CHATTING IN THE OLD COURT HOUSE. WHAT A LOVELY SPECIAL TIME WE HAD XXX.Dad
His, we’re so so sorry you lost your Dad. Sending you much love and hugs ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My 12 year old autistic son recently watched your video about autism and wanted to send you this poem he wrote last week for autism awareness...
Autism makes me different
In many, many ways,
Sometimes I don't see clearly
It can be a bit of a haze.
At times I talk in a different voice
Or struggle to use words at all,
When I can't deal with the world around me
I bang my head against the wall.
Some people call me names
Full of hate, cruelty and spite,
These words really hurt me
Until I cry myself to sleep at night.
So remember I might be different
But I'm also just the same,
Autism isn't all I am
I also have a name.
Well, that just made me cry! Please give him the biggest hug (if he allows hugs) and tell him he's amazing 💜 Also, please can I copy this (I'll hide the name) and post on our social media?
@@FoxesAfloat Yes that would be fabulous, he has no self esteem or self belief at all so when he sees people like his things it gives him a little boost. Thank you. His name is Calvin and he loves your videos since finding the channel 💜
P.s we live not far from Manchester so the fact you are so close has made his day.
Beautiful ❤️
What a beautiful poem. 'I also have a name'. Can I print that on a t-shirt, please?
Hello from Paducah, Kentucky USA. Love your show. Glad you did a piece on Alan Turing. I saw the movie The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch. I cannot believe a court in England did not recognize the hero he was and the lives he saved and how the war was shorten. If there is a God in heaven, which I believe there is, he is being rewarded for what he did for all of us in WW2. Keep giving us the great shows. Love them.
Thanks James 👍🏻
Colin and Shaun. I have to mention the outtakes first....... they were really funny.
This vlog was really lovely. The history the music and the tribute to being gay and transgender. Colin you will know that means something to me.
Thank you so much Gorgeous Foxy Loxy’s xx
Thanks Sharon! x
What an amazing trip. From Alan Turing to Canal Street and the Hacienda Club. I have a soft spot for Manchester. Went to Manchester Poly and it changed my life. Now 67. Thank you very much indeed. A much appreciated start to the weekend.
We love Manchester! 🐝 💜 🏳️🌈
🇨🇦❤️Thanks for another great visit.
I hadn’t heard of Alan Turing until I watched The Imitation Game. Mr. Turing died a couple of months before I was born and along with all of those that fought in the war, he’s one of the many people that sacrificed so much and are responsible for my freedom.
I’m happy that the story of his life is now well known and celebrated.
Although things have improved, there’s still a long way to go to stop the terrible ignorance and hatred that has destroyed too many lives. We need to be vigilant and follow the examples of loving kindness that illustrates that we’re doing our best and that love is love.
Well said, Vera 🐝 🏳️🌈
Spot on.
You are so right. So much more to do.
I know it was different times but what happened to Alan Turing was/is a blight on British history. I am glad that the Govt. finally did the right thing by him. It warms my heart to see how people leave flowers on his birthday. Great video guys. Manchester looks like a very nice city.
We love Manchester! 🐝
A touching tribute to Alan Turing.
Loved seeing him surrounded by flowers.
👍🏻💜🐝 🏳️🌈
Usual high standards of programme making guys, thank you so much. Hatred, bigotry and prejudice. Total wastes of the human brain and emotions. Thank you for highlighting these things. By shining light on them it helps bring about change and tolerance. Good stuff.
Let's hope so, Ste! 💜🐝 🏳️🌈
I was crying going through the gay village and that beautiful transgender carving. I grieve for those poor souls that have suffered so poorly.
💜
Yes and Alan Turing being one of the biggest victims. Saved his country from total destruction, saved the lives of millions of people especially merchant and Navy sailors who were being sunk by Hitlers U boats bringing in vital supplies like food and ammunition to help keep the war effort going and his thanks from the government was them turning their backs on him just because he was gay. Had Hitler and Germany invaded Britain its doest bear worth thinking about the consequences? Especially as Hitler sent gay people straight to the gas chambers. Just the thought of it is truly awful.
I don't think I've ever congratulated you on the superb photography and framing of images you are getting in these videos. So congratulations, and thanks, on bringing us some wonderful images of Manchester.
And, Colin, it's good to see you sending Shaun (and his muscles) to defend you from the rif-raf in Manchester!
And, lovely to see the memorial to Alan Turing. My late great friend Mavis Batey, who cracked codes at Bletchley Park, said Alan was often away in a world of his own, drifting off into the gardens at Bletchley in his slippers, and on arriving at the pond and realising there was nowhere to put his mug of tea, just chucking the empty cuppa into the pond.
The hacienda - a mate of mine designed the loos! His first job - as it were.
I kept expecting Martin and James to turn up and lead you off down some tunnel… Glad he got a plug! Cha- boom- Cha!
Haha! We did plan to but waiting until after Covid.
Omg. I watch your videos religiously every week guys. This weeks felt so special to me.
My parents used to own a narrow boat and I joined them nearly 20 years ago in Manchester when they were moored at Castlefield and we went opposite way to to you and up Canal Street. Having only just told them I was gay to go there was an eye opener for us all. The bars were packed and we got stuck in a very leaky lock. Lots of guys lept over the wall from having a pint and helped us push the leaking gates shut so the water could equalise and we could get out. I will always remember my Dad saying to me “aren’t the gays helpful”. As it’s nearly 6 years since we lost Dad to see these sights again and remember the times I spent with him and mum and the boat brings a tear to my eye.
Thanks for an absolutely fantastic vlog this week. Meant so much to me and brought me so many happy memories.
❤️
Aren't the gays helpful. Love it! We LOVE Manchester! 👍🏻💜🐝 🏳️🌈
As a same-sex couple (only16 years together) we sometimes question how far we’ve come with equality, rights and acceptance. Your remarkable vlog is confirmation that things have improved
significantly. Symbolically, from the famous Canal St. Clubs to a married same-sex couple passing by Canal St. in their narrowboat as home and family perhaps marks those changes.
However, we’re still reminded that it was a very different world not so long ago. Your tribute to Alan Turing was a reminder of just how far we’ve come, and, the futility of war.
Colin, we feel this vlog is one of your finest. It’s touches so many remarkable aspects of Canal life with your superb photography, historical information and the delightful connection you have with each other.
The city landscape of the Canal network (Manchester) is eye-opening and proves that the British Canal network really is a wonder of the world.
BTW, Shaun, if my partner had said what’s for tea after doing all of those locks, to put it nicely I’d have replied “only you would know that, your making it” 😂😂😂🤗
Ah, but we each have our duties. Colin spends literally days planning, researching, going out to do reccy on the route, hours and hours of work. Hence, I do my stuff and he does his. Proper ship-shape 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat Yes, I know what you mean...we balance our days that way with each doing his specialty, it definitely balances out to equal contributions, definitely sign of a healthy relationship 🤗
Alan Turing a perfect person in every way.
Absolutely ❤️
Well yet again you have produced a vlog that is the equal of any documentary in it's entertainment value and historical content. Thank you very much for your efforts, it was a joy to watch!😊×××
Wow, thank you, Dominic!
Well said Dominic. I completely agree!
Alan Turing was a real hero, love is love whichever way you look at it cheers
Absolutely xxx
This was one of my favourite videos of yours. Your tribute to Alan Turing was very touching. He was such a brilliant man.
I've been to Manchester a few times, but I wasn't aware there was a memorial to Alan Turing, there. I always learn so much from your videos, guys! Great history, humor and honesty about life on a narrowboat in England!
Glad you enjoyed it
a couple of years ago my son was on the rochdale in his boat (my first boat) heading west and there was so little water in the canal they were closing it behind him, he was dragging his boat out and into locks by rope (he is a big lad mind) he ended up right in the middle of Manchester on / around canal street for 8 months outside a marina, i don't remember the lock number though.
During this time he was warned by people about how his windows will be broken etc..... not once did he have any problems, got to know the locals and because he was bought up in a traveling circus he knows how to deal with pretty much anyone and they would bring him milk and bread and beer....
Do NOT PLAN to come up through selby (though would be lovely to meet you as i am on the selby canal myself) as the canal swing bridge is bust at the basin onto the ouse (up to york / rippon) or Goole because of the leaking aire and caulder at new junction...... good luck...... x x
Thanks! 👍🏻
I have fond memories of Manchester from my time there in 2000. Seeing Canal Street, the memorials and Alan Turing's statue were both sad and happy. Sad for all the loss, and happy that we still persevere.
Great words 👍🏻
Compulsive Saturday in bed viewing. A top, top episode, we (Lucy and I) both shed a tear at the inhumanity toward Alan Turing. I feel ashamed at the actions of our so called civilised society that causes people to despair and take their own lives. Have a great week guys..
🐝 💜🏳️🌈
Thanks, brilliant as ever. Listening to the story about Alan Turing was shocking 😡
Take care guys 👍😀
Thanks for watching, Mark 👍🏻💜🐝 🏳️🌈
Very interesting about Alan Turing and what a shame how he was treated. Bit dodgy where you were but you had guard dog Otis keeping watch. Great info and superb camera work. My Mum who is 80 has been saying all week that the boys are on Friday at 4 . . . Bless her she really adores you both. Take care and see you next week.
Thanks, Mark! x
😯💩 .... crash crash bottles, shouting and the rest.😲😲😲 Beetham Tower! And ‘ow much.?...fora flat? 😂 Manchester,an awesomely odd mix of fab and ...well,grim eek... I suppose like most places.Fab history lesson, thanks for that, and for the amazing views.Alan Turing, 😢, Glad the government have seen fit to do the right thing by him, tragic waste of a life.
Fab vlog as always.Stay safe xx
Ah, we love Manchester! 💜 🐝 🏳️🌈
Oh my goodness, I have never commented on a video before, but here I am in Ecuador (teaching in Quito) and you are literally moored right next to the flat I use to live in, in Manchester. I am super super homesick now, haha! Hope you have a lovely time in the best city in the world.
Thanks for all the amazing videos!
No way! Hehe! Nice one. It's lovely here!
Deftly done as always boys👌😎Alan Turing's contribution to British history deserves to be on every school curriculum👍 Not all war heroes were in combat🇬🇧⚔️ KTF🙏
Totally agree 👍🏻
Alan Turing is one of those truly enigmatic men we all know and admire. Thank you for this film.
Our pleasure, Heather 💜🐝👍🏻
Maybe is worth pointing out that this statement about Enigma having shortened 2 years the war ... that was one of many hypocritical statements used by the state . Without Enigma we might have lost the war. No one was near to solve the problems . So it was abismal the way they treated Touring! Back To you guys ... as always great vid ! take care .
Thanks
One of your best in my view. Two segments touched me on a personal note. The part on Sackville Gardens made me think of my ex, Jackie, whom being transgender have had to withstand not only degrading words from random people in the streets, at restaurants and so on, but also physical abuse at times. You then mentioned Alan Turing, the father of computers as we know them, who was gay. He ended his life not being allowed to live as the person he was. It led me to this; Today it's been 380 days since my current boyfriend Xavier and I parted at an airport some 10000 kilometers from where I live. Covid have made it impossible for us to reunite, as we don't have the same citizenship. It's not as final as Turings destiny, I know that, but still, living apart, only being able to be together on Skype is tough. If we'd been married it would have been different, but same sex marriages aren't allowed where Xae lives. So thank you guys for this installation. It's nice to know there are people who think and feel in the world. You certainly are two of these.
Nothing much I can add to that. 💜
ThAnkyou fro Cheering me up. I am from Manchester and am a nurse in USA. When I have a bad day you both make me laugh . Nobody across pond knows what a bacon butty is.
Haha! It's food from the Gods! 🥓 😋
Very much enjoyed the Alan Turing tribute!
Just waiting on my credit card to be delivered & then its Patreon time & merch buying time. Woo-hoo 🎉🥳
Have a great week ✌🏻💖😎
Awesome, thank you!
Another great history vlog. We as a society are getting better , but we still have a long long way to go. No human being should be treated the way Alan Turing was regardless of status.
Well said!
Never bored watching you guys. You must spend heaps of time researching. It's much appreciated
Thanks so much Donna!
I realize I am now a long term Foxes watcher since I'm in the States, have no canal boat or canal, and know why the marina is named Thomas Telford Marina and who ol' Tom was. LOL! The butterfly statue thing was awesome. So nice to see. I am the T in LGBTQ. - Lauren
😂😂 Well done 👍🏻👍🏻
Great bit about Alan Turing,he should be awarded a posthumous knighthood. His treatment was shocking even for the times. Chris
I totally agree, Chris 🐝 🏳️🌈
I was aware of Alan Turing’s story but you telling it had me in tears. 🥲 we have come a long way but we ain’t there yet. ✌️
Maybe one day.
The Foxes 🌈 Martin 🌈 and my hero Alan Turing 🌈 all in one video, what's not to love! I see Piccadilly Undercroft is still in use for cruising of an entirely different nature, as it has been for decades 😂. Wonderful video, professional & entertaining 👍
Thanks! We love Manchester! 🐝 💜 🏳️🌈
Have you seen the film “the imitation Game”? It’s on Netflix, it’s about Alan Turing during WW2 and how he cracked the Nazi enigma codes etc. Brilliant film, I’d highly recommend you watch it👍
@@matty6848 Yes, I saw it when it was released. Some differing opinions on its accuracy in places, but overall a good film. Alan's other work in areas like developmental biology were also ground-breaking.
His apparent suicide has been brought into question many times, not least by his acquaintances.
Genius is an oft over-used descriptor, but in Alan's case it was entirely accurate.
Thanks Colin and Shaun, for another really informative video. I love British history and years ago was greatly upset by Alan Turings’ treatment at that time, and how he was driven to suicide. We need to embrace all of our differences, and appreciate our gifts. Best wishes from Ontario!
Totally agree. Thanks, Pamela.
Ace one for mentioning Martin Zero. We love his videos too. Would be nice for him to join you again sometime
I'm sure we will after the restrictions are over 👍🏻
Martin’s great. Well worth a subscribe!
Brilliantly entertaining and informative in equal measure. Great tribute to Turing, father of my profession 👍
Thank you kindly!
The memorials and canal street are so beautiful and heartening. My dad used to talk about canal street. He said it was one of the few places he could be himself. It’s sad that others try and tell us how to live our lives. God bless you guys and Otis. Canal on. ❤️💚💜💙🧡
Thanks Kay 👍🏻💜🐝 🏳️🌈
Great episode. Thank you for sharing Alan Turing's story and the memorials, especially the transgender plaque, it meant a lot to me.

Thanks 👍 That means so much, Chris 👍🏻
Hear hear xx
You spend alot of time and effort to give us so much information in your vlogs. I am surprised a tv company havent snapped you up.
We've had loads of offers, but turn them down. We like to keep control of our content xxx
@@FoxesAfloat Very wise, too many good "acts" (if you'll excuse being called an "act") have been ruined in recent years by getting signed by a TV company and loosing their real identity to corporate mush
@@FoxesAfloat please keep this mentality. You’re freedom to tell the stories you do-the way you do depends on NO ONE telling you what to to. It’s authentic, wonderful, and better than any BS a broadcaster demands.
Oh the nights I've had on Canal Street! 🥳😅
I met my beautiful Wife on a night out there, now we have babies lol ❤🐝
Wonderful 💜
Getting to Waters Meeting just in time for the Trafford Centre reopening, which might have a massive Super Dry shop...
Alan Turing Way is the name of the Eastern Side of the inner ring road, by Man City and more Trams, next to the Ashton Canal.
An Alan Turing mural is next to Southern Cemetery on Princess Road (A5103) the main arterial road southwards.
As for lock 84, my enamel mug made a bid to become a canal boat a couple of weeks ago crossing the lock gates, got it back and didn't lose my bike or bum-bag with tools & tubes! just not able to have a brew :(
I wouldn't be here, subbed, if not for Martin, that trap door and the Rochdale being an local canal :)
Nice one, Cheers, Yousuf!
Yeah, Ashton. Sounds about right, lol! I’m originally from Tameside. I know it ain’t pretty but I still go back.
When I stay in town, I stay at the Jury’s right by the Tib plug hahahaha. I always say hello to Alan Turing and all.
Hope you got a chance to sink a few scoops in the Peveril of the Peak. Brilliant little boozer that.
Thanks, lads for this one. Really enjoyed it, me. Can’t wait to get back.
Ah, we love Manchester 💜🐝 🏳️🌈
Mind those steps Shaun !
😂😂😂
This video made me emotional ,seeing the sculptures ,especially the Caterpillar to butterfly in memory of transgender people .also alan Turin statue.Thank you .
Thanks, Linda 💜
Colin and Sean, maybe not the prettiest of your vlogs, it certainly one of the best. 🌟🌟 You’ve shown another side of this fantastic history of canals. Lovely tribute to that dear man and mind - Turing - SO underestimated in what he achieved. 🌟👏
And there IS a plug in the canal 🤣🤣
Just brilliant , again Thank you. 😃🍰🍰☕️☕️. Joan
Wow, thank you!
So many things to say . . . first, Colin, you did incredibly well coping with Silver Fox through all those locks while telling us all that history so perfectly as though you were standing at a lectern. As for the inhuman treatment of Alan Turing, well it made me angry and sickened, l am so glad that the people, the ordinary people, who are the ones that really matter, leave the flowers for him. Also, though l am not a political animal, it made me mad that the prosperity and importance of Manchester was on the backs of the no doubt downtrodden workers in those grim factories with the tall smoking chimneys that you showed. So, in spite of your normal level of excellence, the subject matter of this week's blog has left me, for the first time ever, disturbed and sad. xx
When we started this series we promised warts and all. We love Manchester! 🐝 but more warts than usual this week 🏳️🌈
Wonderful episode as always. Mechanucs of locks, creepy low head room and great history, art and tribute. I love Friday evenings watching your vlogs.
Thanks again!
As a Martin Zero subscriber, I was so excited to see Tib Lock!
Ah, you're his subscriber 🤣
Your vlog helped me through a very difficult time recently; you're a true inspiration in so many ways. Love from America!
You got this!
I very much enjoyed this one Colin and Shaun. I'm a huge WWII history fan and I so much appreciate the recognition you both gave to Alan Turing. I believe that it is quite possible, this man may be responsible for saving more lives in this war, than perhaps any other person. I do know that Britain did name a Traffic Circle after him, but few people today know who he is. Those nine locks seem to cause quite a lot of trouble for many boaters, probably not a route for newbies to try out, but the city does seem to possess quite a bit of character. One question doers come to mind, how did you manage to stay the night in that private mooring? Take very good care guy's and thanks again for another amazing video ;)
It's not private, it's just not owned by the CRT. Anyone can stay in there, it's just to well known 😉
Out to the North East of Manchester the main road that runs past, The Ethiad Stadium, Manchester City's home ground, is called, Alan Turing Way. He is well known and well remembered all over Manchester. I used to work in Jersey (Channel Islands) quite often and in one care home I visited, a lady there actually worked at Bletchley Park with Turing, although she didn't like him much.
Love this vlog good to see you both in Manchester and comming past the gay village I love the gay village carnt wait for the next vlog xx
We love Manchester 🐝 💜🏳️🌈
Hi guys, what a wonderful vlog. Nice to see you in a built up area I've been watching you from ep1 I love both of your humours and history and was privileged you covered the history of Manchester including the lgbtq+ and hacienda. Looking forward to the rest of your vids keep safe guys.🌈
Thanks so much! 😊
Nice tribute to Alan Turing.
Well done. 👍🏽
Thank you very much!
Wow some scary locks there - very informative and so interesting too. You bring places alive thank you. Fascinating seeing the statue of Alan Turing - as I had recently watched The Imitation Game. Thank you for your vlogs - keep travelling safely from Brisbane Australia.
Glad you enjoyed it
Fab video fellas thanking you. I'm a 50yr old Manc lady so this is so very dear to my heart, I went to Shena Simon 6th Form College in the background of Sackville Gardens. ALL of my lessons were on teh top floor, I lost all my puppy fat lol. Sorry about some of the hooligans we unfortunately have but the rest makes up for their lack of decorum. My fascination with the British Canal system started in Manchester. A friend of mine lives near the Thomas Telford Basin and during our trip we stayed along Canal Street. I was fascinated by the locks, the tow paths, and history. I took a zillion pictures near where you moored. Found your channel back in May…and have been going through all the videos from the beginning. So happy to get to this episode!
Aww, that's ace. Cheers Robert 👍🏻

Thanks so much!!
Fascinating stuff, I love WW2 history, as always take care and thanks for posting.
Thanks, Gareth.
Hi from sunny Florida, l loved todays vlog, being 4000 miles away from home l am loving seeing you travel through my old stomping ground (Marple, Manchester). You have no idea how l look forward to Fridays and opening your new vlog. Thanks for what you do, believe me it helps a lot of people. Stewart x
Aww, thanks Stewart. 💜
Really enjoyed this video. It speaks to the skill of you both that you can handle what is clearly a difficult section of the canal with such confidence. Manchester itself is evidently not the easiest and most secure place especially in the some of the ares surrounding the canal. The monuments in the park, especially the statue of Alan Turing, are especially moving. We’ve come a long way on issues of gender but there’s still a way to go. Be well both....until next week....be well.....Chris 🇨🇦
Well said, Chris 👍🏻🐝💜
The way we treated Alan Turing is a perpetual stain on our history. Anyway, great vid. The canal plug was the first one I watched of Martin Zero. Btw, not sure if you’ve seen, but 24 hour party people is a hilarious biopic of the Manchester music scene.
Yeah, the built a replica of the place to film it 👍🏻
Love 24 hour party people. That whole era was just mental and funny. Oh boy the Happy Mondays and their antics🤣🤦🏻♂️
Loved this video in my own city and learning more about Alan turing!
👍🏻💜🐝
Gosh Manchester does not seem very safe for boaters...glad you survived, my life would be so much sadder if you guys were not around. Can I live with you? I will do all your cleaning, shopping, locks....and I’d even pay you £1500 a month. I would live in a pull along dingy...I would throw noisy generators in the canal ...well? xx
Haha! Sounds like a tempting offer 🤔
That's so sad about Alan Turing. I knew with his work during the war I was not aware that he was gay or what he went through as a result of it. To think that he saved so many people and then had to go through all of that.
💜
Bravo!!!! Colin and Shawn,
This vlog is amazing. It's literally chock ful of sights and information. Like you pulled out all the stops and let the information flow. Washing over us like canal water over the top of the lock. You navigated through a totally built landscape and its History both physical and Human. I am glad that the Canal system has survived through time and the built environment had reporposed around it. The Human environment is still messy and the underbelly of racism, homophobia and excess still move with us through time. Thank you for sharing with us that some reflection has taken place and past wrongs have been acknowledged and addressed.
You passed under a railway bridge that passed over the canal at forty five degrees to the canal .I thought it is a piece of Industrial Art. The way that cut stone and cast iron was used so beautifuly. The design and excution of that work shows that the designer and builder had a great esthetic.. And thats only one of the many many things you put in the vlog today,
My hat's off to you Guys, Stay safe ..Excellent ,Excellent !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much, Eamonn 👍🏻
Alan Turing has a road named after him too, the Alan Turing Way that runs along the side of the Etihad stadium of Manchester City, enjoyable once again fellas 👏 👍
👍🏻
You two absolutely lift my spirits every week. I adore being on the water but it’s just a distant memory for me now as I’m disabled and housebound, but your blogs give me what I need every week!
Glad we can do that for you 💜
Great blog #149. You obviously have some avid fans - I thought I would be one of the first, but here I am thumb writing from the USA as Commenter 738.
Memories of Manchester go all the way back to a school trip on the Manchester Ship Canal when I was 9; my first overseas trip to Spain at the age of 16 from Manchester airport; and a final visit in the early 90’s to visit a doctor friend with AIDS.
Seeing Manchester from your narrow boat was great - especially Canal Street - which I’ve never seen, but relate to through QAF (British version).
I know you have to travel through the Industrial Revolution - but I love your episodes in the countryside.
Haven’t made it through your entire 148 vlogs yet - but we’re working at it.
🌈🌈
Happy catching-up!
Many steps forward in the long journey for equality for ALL PEOPLE! Such a nice story.
Thanks, Jorge 👍🏻💜
Hi guys ,well done for telling Allan Turing`s story attitudes have come along way from those days, great vlog stay safe all .x.
Thanks 👍
What a wonderful tribute to Alan Turing. No one should have gone through what he and so many others went through. As a society we have so far to go. Hugs to you. Shaun and Otis.
Thanks, Mark. We totally agree 💜
You two are fast becomming The Best Precenters of narrow boat live and the history around the Canals. Colin is a gifted documentarist and Shaun the quiet center of strength that makes all this possible. Thank you guys, Hope to meet you on the Canals in a few years. 😊🤗
Wow, thanks!
My weekly dose of love and laughter from the Foxes Afloat😊
👍🏻👍🏻
Another Friday Treat! I really enjoyed this one, loads of interesting facts Colin. Alan Turing's story is so sad and its true not enough people appreciate what he did. I really like Manchester, such an interesting place. Well done Shaun - what an earth did you do for Colin to make you do all those locks!!
Haha! Just getting fitter 👍🏻
Oh my goodness, this is my all time favourite, absolutely brilliant. castlefield Junction is were my wife & I go ( or did, covid ) to the Wharf pub for a slap up, delicious meals in there boy's. Colin your entire production in all your Vlogs is getting better & better & you tell the historic stories with great knowledgeably skill, you seem to draw us in closer & closer to the point you want to say " go on tell us" bloody brilliant. Can the BBC or channel 4 please give this gifted man his own history channel. well done boy's.
They keep offering, George, but I want to carry on doing what we do on here 👍🏻
Congratulations fantastic video, very interesting. I personally liked Alan Turing story very much, as he was and is and will ever one of the most important person in British History. Without him the war could have gone a totally different way.
Couldn't agree more, Daniel x
Thank you for educating myself and others who aren't familiar with WWII history. Wishing you both health and giving respect.
Thanks George! x
Fascinating and touching in equal measure. I misspent my youth in Manchester in the 1980s so loads of good memories. I loved your sensitive and touching item about Alan Turing x
Glad you enjoyed it. Ah, we love Manchester 💜🐝 🏳️🌈
cheers Guys i have learned a bit more about where I have grown up. I atill find you vidios awsome, as a disabled person some places are hard for me to go but watching your vidieos i am learning more istary about our contry,
Thank you, Norman xx
In 1999, my wife, then daughter and I spent part of a week in Manchester. One day we walked the Rochdale 9. It was as you say sometimes a bit creepy but we were going to see a bit of the Roman wall that remained and it was the best path from our hotel up near the GMex to the Castlefield area which was near the wall fragment.
I will go back some day to see the statue of the butterfly. About 8 years after that trip our now son told us he was trans. We worried about him, not because we thought it was wrong for him but we knew how hard that could be and how hard the world could make it. Fourteen years later we still worry, that is what parents do, but he has spent more than a third of his life as a man and is happy with his life. As my wife, our child and I have all had to battle the black dog that can sit on your chest, depression it is good to see him happy. He was far stronger than we knew.
Wow! What an amazing experience. So proud of you all for coping for what must have been a stressful time
