- As we made our way through my save, I ran headlong into a problem I have over and over trying to rush to the top of the game. This transfer market issue has followed me through the years on Football Manager, making this video is my promise to myself to have a new transfer tactic in the coming seasons. Maybe, probably, maybe I’ll just watch this video before playing through the next transfer market. You will learn about team dynamics, transfer strategy, and how to increase your financial efficiency in FM.
It’s really just the ability to think about what you’re doing and not getting seduced by a particular wonderkid in a particular moment. With chat and everything, I can be prone to seduction in the transfer market. How many times can I use the word seduction in a description of a football manager video? It’s honestly seductive to think about how often I can seductively say it. Amazing stuff, thank you FM21 for teaching people from around the world the word seductive.

My biggest mistake is signing all the worlds best youth players every season. Always end up with a surplus of unhappy CM's.

This whole video feels like an attack on my historical transfer activity. I've done that 'buy multiple players for the same position' thing SO many times.
this is what i do and i have never run into this problem... if you have a 25 man squad in most leagues - that's 2 players in every position for your default formation plus 3 others for added versatility, adapting and developing - once you have this set up in your head it makes the transfer window so much more accessible and you don't run into disasters like this
That's my approach as well. But it doesn't mean I won't spend 50 hours per a week of transfer window walking around in circles and smoking hideous amounts of cigarettes trying to decide which two players to have in what positions, who to sell, who to buy etc.. I go to a grocery store and buy all the wrong things because instead of milk and coffee I'm thinking about a Japanese midfielder and a Russian left-back.

Yeh similar, if I reach like Champions league level I want two teams basically, one main one and one almost as good with an emphasis on younger players who are basically being prepared to take over from the main players. You then know where your first 11 needs improving or where you need more depth (where you don't necessarily need the best player right now) and then make those your transfer targets. I also have in mind players like 2-3 years plus down the line so like if I have a star player who is like 28-29, I know I need to get his replacement into the squad in the next 2/3 years ready to bed in before the other guy starts declining and I might watch and scout a player for years waiting for him to get unhappy or wants a new contract or contract runs out etc. Then when I am at really big clubs I basically do a Chelsea, I get loads of cheaper younger players in, mentor them or tutor them, get them some loans and they either exceed expectations and push into my team or I sell them for a profit down the line.
i use a 21 man squad and my 2nd goalie is always in the reserves lol

Every year I usually only need 1 or 2 replacements/upgrades but end up buying 7 or 8. I just get excited about prospects heh

@@AtraErus11 After breaking that promise to myself with fm20, I regret not sticking to always buying every other verson of FM. Going from 17 to 19 was great. When I went from 09 to 11, it was great. Going from 19 to 20 was so extremely dissapointing. I should have just stuck with 19 for a few more months, and when I was ready to play more fm after a break, fm21 would be availble.
I very much look forward to fm22, since I am not going to walk into the trap of replacing fm20 with 21. Especially not this late in the cycle. The squads will be outdated regardless, so downloading a database for the new transfer activity will be the solution for wither game. Or go to a retro db in case you're bored with the current situation.
The thing is, there are only so many changes they can do with a new season of fm, going from one to the next will feel like the same game. But if you skeep a season, you get more a feel of a different game. A lot of the "new" features I really enjoyed about fm19 was introduced in 18. But fm18 looks and feels a lot like fm17 in most aspects. But combining all the changes of 18 and 19, and I got an actual new experience when switching games.

This video was brilliant. I fell into this problem end of last season, ending up with 30+ players on loan and everyone unhappy at being left out of the squad. Went too far the other way this season and I'm not seeing real progress in the squad. This was ace.
It's a nice feeling when you're a veteran FM player (since CM 3) and see a guide video that mentions stuff you've been doing for such a long time.

Historically CM is very easy position to overpopulate along with attackers... left footed defenders and wingers on the other hand start getting offers as soon as they does anything right. Yeah and a keeper that is both good on "paper" and trustwhorty in a thight spot can be tricky to get a hold of

my biggest mistake was watching this video and getting far too many spoilers on the Dragon twitch uploads on here that im still catching up on.
This is a fun and useful video which I took a lot of things from (I've filled my squad with midfielders I felt each time were adding a lot to my Southend squad but then they arrived and they're all the same).
But it's really 'how to avoid making this mistake' as opposed to 'how to fix it'

Yeah I feel you, I felt the burn when I signed too many world class CB's cause why not and none of them were happy with the playtime cause I tried to rotate like PRIME GUARDIOLA thinking that would work. Lads, it doesn't. It fucks your team cohesion and manager support. Keep the squad thin and quality !

I think a reason for buying too many players for a certain position is a mix between shopping addiction (who does not want to have a new player sometimes just because he is new?) and simple impatience. If your squad has a lot of potential, then why do you need to make plenty of new signings? You could just keep your team as it is for one more season and because your players develope, you will have a much better team at the end of the season. In particular when your team is already good enough to qualify for international competitions, you barely find players that are cheap and can actually help you right away. Just sell your worst 4-5 players and replace those with young talents, is often enough to keep getting better. In most of my saves in which I won the league title the first time, I had a very calm summer transfer window so that my team cohesion was pretty good from the beginning, leading to not dropping some points in the first few games.

I have made myself only sign 1 big signing for first team each season (if needed.... or promote) And only 3 youth players. I also have a spring clean every 2 seasons. Discipline is the key 💪💪💪💪💪💪

Sometimes I filter out the players that are not at the club (loans) to have better overview of my squad. Then I forget that those filtered players exist and I sign another players, who I dont need, because I already had good options on the squad.
I sign a lot of (mainly young) players at the end of contract that do not immediately go into the first team. I put them in the youth teams or loan them out and then either they become good enough or they don't, in which case I just sell them on for cash. It's especially fun to buy a boatload of highly rated youngsters in a network save, I ultimately got all my mates coming to me asking to buy some of them for a massive profit. Never mind the fact that I had about 100 players out on loan. It's like a nice business model, but you have to make sure you don't crowd the first team/starting line up.

Mine is more AZ Alkmaar, acquire talent cheap and turn for massive profit producing wonderkids once in a while. Fewer loans, fewer players on contract.
I did this with goalkeepers on FM 19 with Watford. I had to rotate two excellent goalkeepers for what we were at the time because I forgot to cancel one of their deals. It was a good time, even if it didn't help the team playing with two different starting keepers all season long.
I had this at university. We had 2 good goalkeepers in our squad, so we played them 45 minutes each. Wouldn't recommend in FM 😂

I agree with this video, but this kind of stuff is also my biggest moneymaker. Buying a bunch of wonderkids that have release clauses, loan them out, sell 2 seasons later for a huge profit. They never play for my team.

Always add players who can improve your first eleven or have wonderkid potential to your shortlist
I missed out one Columbian due to work permit. Atletico M. Picked him up and slapped a 44mil release clause. 😂😂
In my teams I always try have 2 players in each specific position. So 2 RB, 2RCB, 2LCB ect this gives me a 22 man squad and I’ll then add a couple of older players that are out of contract soon and some young youth team players to make it up to 25/26 players. Anyone signed outside that squad goes on loan or comes into the squad and whoever they’ve replaced is sold or sent out on loan.
Find it always gives the younger players enough chances to develop, keeps the squad happy and more importantly I don’t waste transfer money so it’s there if I really need it or a must have player becomes available.
The players I loan out I give them 2 full seasons to show they’re good enough to challenge anyone in the 22 before moving them on if they aren’t good enough

I’ve overpopulated my wingers so I tried to loan some out, the ones I was willing to loan out refused so this season I messed up and loaned out too many defenders to make a 25 man squad.
And its even worse when you play in Italy and you find those south-american wonderkids...
Whenever you get so many player in a single window you royally mess up any team chemistry you have been developing!
Question for Zealand, I've always opted for symmetrical formations, which just feels right, but I've noticed a number of your formations are asymmetrical. Is it ok to use asymmetrical formations without further thought if it suits the squad?
For me they way to combat this is to have s solid wage structure and stick to it so there is no way I'm going to sign a hot prospect on the wage of a first team player no matter how good he is. If I do this, I'll have to bump up his squad status and play him
I have 5 first team standers CAM's so had to change my formation i now play 3 Cam's and put all my wingers out on loan.

Yep sign wisely or your team will be moody like a storm. Transfers is really a challenging one though.

Im still trying to get rid of dead weight after moving up from VNLS with Ebbsfleet, 4th season in the prem and i still have some players who are just bad for challenging for the top, but i cant sell them. Every registration i get like 5 players unhappy but they soon should be all gone.

not really. Per week is UK only. The rest of Europe use per month.
My biggest problem is that I want the "new hotness" but I also want to keep my players that have been great for the last few seasons. I get too attached to them.
So now in my third season, I have 5 players on trial that I want. But Many of them are overpopulating certain positions, and I am worried about my 20 player registration limit. Several are under 22 years old (no reg. needed), but som will turn 22 during the season.
Basically I want it all, and I can't have it :D ....I don't even like putting people in my U23 squad.

I did this once I saw this 17 year old winger from the Czech Republic on a free I scouted him until like 70% thinking that the guy was class ended up paying him like 4k a week to sign for me(manager of wrexham in league 2) because other clubs wanted him and he didn't even look that good when I signed him I was like ,I made a mistake 🤣 not done that since I always 100% scout

It will be Young Boys doing well in Europe. If they can hang on to their best players they turn into a powerhouse. In real life they just won the Swiss league by 27 points so it isn't far fetched.
@@Veaseify But also in real life the Swiss Super League is very very low in the coefficient. Lowest point since many years. The days of guaranteed Champions League group stage spots are long gone.
@@falagarius Switzerland are 19th at the moment, 12 points behind Russia in 8th. Zealand is 6 years into his save so if say, Basle and Young Boys had a few decent runs in Europe it could happen.

I don't understand the problem. I sign players from South America that won't actually show up for 2-3 years (and I won't have a non-EU slot for them until 2-3 years after they arrive). This is exactly the strategy that the titans of football use (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man Utd, Man City, Juventus, Inter, etc). Plus, I have zero loyalty to players who aren't loyal to me. As soon as one of those titans starts sniffing around my (first team) players, if the player indicates the desire to go, I get the best price possible.....and then move one of those young players I have stockpiled into their spot. A lot of times, if you play those young players a bit, you'll find bigger clubs willing to throw money at you for them. I'm talking mainly about Spain and Italy because I don't play England with their inflated player values (and politically isolated status). But damn if English clubs don't come in for my players, offering WAY too much money.
