I used to live in that Ascot Vale estate too, right near Wingate avenue. I grew up there with my parents and two siblings, we unfortunately shared a unit with a guy who was very clearly addicted to drugs and he would even have people over and they would do drugs together. As you can imagine, things would escalate and those people would get aggressive very quickly, police were always questioning us, and it was difficult to move to a different location because of the long waiting lists for public housing. My parents are refugees from a shitty 3rd world country (I’m East African) and they didn’t want to take out a loan for us to move to a home because it was against their beliefs to do so. However, after our car got stolen and a bloody knife was left outside our door they decided to pack up and we moved to the western suburbs. It isn’t great… but it was way better than living in Ascot Vale and I felt safe walking to school alone. I don’t think these crimes and predicaments are limited to “African” appearing residents

I used to live in that Ascot Vale estate too, right near Wingate avenue. I grew up there with my parents and two siblings, we unfortunately shared a unit with a guy who was very clearly addicted to drugs and he would even have people over and they would do drugs together. As you can imagine, things would escalate and those people would get aggressive very quickly, police were always questioning us, and it was difficult to move to a different location because of the long waiting lists for public housing.
My parents are refugees from a shitty 3rd world country (I’m East African) and they didn’t want to take out a loan for us to move to a home because it was against their beliefs to do so. However, after our car got stolen and a bloody knife was left outside our door they decided to pack up and we moved to the western suburbs. It isn’t great… but it was way better than living in Ascot Vale and I felt safe walking to school alone. I don’t think these crimes and predicaments are limited to “African” appearing residents

I can understand and empathise with more immigrants who have just come from places that are war torn and in poverty who come here and are cooked for a decade or two before their communities are functional than an Australian whose family have been settled here for 200 years and yet is still disfunctional, delinquent, member/s of society.
