  • Does Red Dead Redemption 2 run smoother on PS4 Pro if the console is set to 1080p? Is it actually running at 1080p there, and if so, how does image quality match up to super-sampling? And just what is going on with the game's HDR implementation on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4? We have answers.

To avoid blurry at 1080p supersampling.. You need a 1080p tv or monitor.. Don't use 4k tv and set the ps4 pro to 1080p because it will only blurr the image quality.

I have a PS4 and an Xbox One X. I play on a 55" Samsung 4k 6 series MU6300 TV. Having both consoles makes it extremely easy to resist blind and toxic fanboyism. It helps to force you to remain in a state of pervasive objectiveness (as opposed to a blind-ideological confirmation bias that spirals into a state of denial when the facts don't support your preferences). My wife is playing it on the PS4 and I'm playing it on the X. It looks great on the PS4 but the difference between the two is the usual difference between a console game and a PC game. This is definitely a first. As someone who prefers PlayStation----it's about time Xbox had a win.
Having said all of this: these X Haters (who are hoping for the complete downfall of XBOX) really need to check themselves. If Xbox went out of business, PlayStation would have no competition-----and mark my words: if that happened the quality and service of PlayStation would go to hell. Their customer service is already complete SHIT. I would hate to see it if they had no competition. Competition is good. It forces companies to be held accountable to their own practices (and bullshit)-----lest they nudge people toward the competition. Getting this across to blind-follower-fanboys is no small task.
But, I guess if you want a communist-console (who offers no alternative)-----have at it. Most of these people have no idea what they're perpetuating. They're so blinded by the fact they can't afford an X or that all of their friends play on PS4----that they *choose* to remain blind. This provides the illusion that their self-deception is rooted in fact. When in fact, their self-deception is rooted in fanboyism. They're eaten up by jealousy, bitter-envy and chronic-denial (thus the toxicity that they spew). It's pretty sad, really. And make no mistake about it: this happens with Xbox fanboys just the same.

The best choice is to keep it, otherwise whenever the camera moves the contents on the other side of windows would smear about like crazy.
The result of keeping it is that contents behind windows can briefly take on the detail of the window in fast motion, but over time this settles out so it's far harder to notice (the waterfalls in Fortnite demonstrate this perfectly). TAA simply does nothing with transparent surfaces, it's a fundamental flaw in raster graphics (transparencies in general are a massive pain in the ass). You either TAA the contents on the other side (which is what games do) or you attempt to TAA the window and end up smearing what's on the other side (no one does this because it looks crap).
Alpha to coverage costs almost zero on performance (costs the same as no transparency). It's the standard way to do alpha cut-outs these days, it has entirely replaced threshold alpha (discard fragments that have an alpha below threshold) and it's better than the trade-off of no early-out-Z-rejection that an in-shader alpha discard lumps you with. The hair and foliage in this game, and pretty much many, many other modern games, use alpha-to-coverage; there is no significant performance hit - it is pedestrian at this point in games and isn't anything special.
FXAA is a screen-space anti-aliasing solution, it would indeed clean up alpha-to-coverage fragments, but TAA is already being used (which is also screen-space) so having two expensive screen-space AA options on top of each other in 4k probably isn't a good idea (plus FXAA blurs the image significantly as it is analytical, TAA gathers information from previous frames using motion vectors and camera space position of fragments to attempt a crappy 2x MSAA - and has good results).
MSAA is almost never an option these days for deferred rendering as the number of deferred G Buffers is multiplied for each level of MSAA. That quickly fills up graphics memory massively, and on console hardware and regular PC hardware the graphics memory isn't always there (sometimes it is on PC, GTA V has an MSAA option for GPUs with lots of memory). MSAA works best in the good old days where all you had was a colour buffer and a depth buffer (maybe a stencil buffer if you're feeling fancy) - but now we have normal buffers, motion vector buffers, camera space position buffers, light accumulation buffers (and way, way more) and some of these are more than 8 bits per channel for HDR so take up a lot more graphics memory by themselves, let alone multiplied for MSAA.
Most devs opt to avoid transparencies because transparencies in raster graphics suck. They cannot write to the depth buffer (unless you're a nut job - Minecraft Java Edition does this a lot), cannot write to any of the special deferred rendering buffers (or else they trash it entirely, this is what I described with TAA above). Transparencies are the thing you hold back from using as much as possible until they are absolutely needed - for deferred renderers the G Buffers are resolved to colour buffer before transparency is dealt with.
Alpha to coverage is a clever trick to avoid *some* transparency issues - when there is 1x buffers (no MSAA) then alpha to coverage just does a regular dither pattern, which can cause fragments to pop in and out between frames which can escape TAA (as I originally stated). Alpha-to-coverage avoids the need to blend semi-transparent pixels, so it can comfortably replace fragments in the motion vector buffer, position, normal, etc without having to worry about whatever value was originally "underneath" - it is compatible with deferred G Buffers and can happily write to the depth buffer.
When there's more than 1x buffer (MSAA 2x or higher) then alpha-to-coverage uses the MSAA blend step to add various levels of transparencies (2^NUM_BUFFERS levels of transparency) which, combined with stippling/dithering, massively helps the quality of hair and foliage. But this isn't available in RDR2 or GTA V on console - MSAA is available on GTA V PC, however, so you can see the effect MSAA has on the transparency in hair, foliage and distant objects fading in.
That's a lot to read, but I don't want to leave room for misinformation here so I've tried to cover everything I can.

    Published on 30 Oct 2018
We analysed the RGB parade scope of Red Dead Redemption 2 using 4K HDR screenshots from the Xbox One X console, and concluded that RDR2's HDR video output is basically just upscaled from SDR. Although not tested by ourselves, the same issue is present on the Playstation 4 (PS4) Pro version too.
Because the Red Dead Redemption 2's HDR rendition usually results in a picture that is either too dim, or bright enough but too washed out because of elevated black level and midtones issues, we recommend that you play the game in SDR (standard dynamic range) to get the best picture quality.
Many thanks to Adam Fairclough (a.k.a. evilboris) and 4K Blu-ray compressionist David Mackenzie for their help in the production of this video. Adam's article on Red Dead Redemption 2's faked HDR output can be found here:

Pro, old 1080p tv, no hdr, no superdupersampling, and boost off.
My setup provides smooth frame rates in all locations and a nice image..... sometimes.
However sometimes there is a lot of blur or varing degrees of out of focus blur.
Dof, god rays, volumetric lighting, and various weather and atmosphere effects all can contribute to blurring an image.
RDR2's fast game clock causes those efffects to sometimes come and go fast. Within seconds a nice image will degrade to a poor and blurry image.
The fix is to have more display options in settings. Options to enable/ disable or sliders for adjusting intensity.
Dof, camera motion blur, god rays, volumetric lighting/atmosphere, and fov options should be as standard on consoles as the brightness option is.
Interiors at night in RDR2 often look blurry. The cause is wacky dof and an attempt to simulate the soft light produced from gas lights.
Turning off dof and lowering volumetric lighting intensity would reduce or eliminate the blur in those scenes. Outside scenes would similarly be improved.

I'm playing it on Xbox One X. Not had time to play it much, so I'm still in the snow. I have HDR turned on, and it's not consistent. One minute, it's pretty bright (the snow seemingly shining) and then suddenly it will go incredibly dull. An example, is that when you start the game, you get a Red Dead Redemption 2 title screen, in its usual white writing, then when it recognises the HDR, the white turns a dull grey.

Turn off HDR - it looks much better on the PRO

Yeah, it's really bad. Turning off HDR help a bit, but still looks blurry to me. I played it on 4K monitor. Rockstar say they will patch this problem, I hope they do it ASAP.

Van Dammage yeah man. In all honesty, the upgrade was inevitable. I had a first gen PS4 and it sounded like a freaking hair dryer. Also, my TV was an 11 year old Samsung plasma.
I needed to upgrade. But it’s still a let down about RDR2’s graphics.

@@MyWORDisntGospel , I had a ps4 too it was a decent box, definitely better than launch xbox one but man the noise was annoying. My buddy took his ps4 and red dead 2 to my place and the noise was like a constant yet engine.
Both my xbox one s and X are almost whisper quiet very impressive especially on X1X. How is the noise from your pro? I've heard they are quite noisy too but new models should be better.

Van Dammage my Pro is very quiet. But it’s only a couple months old. I have yet to see what a year or two do to the heat sink. I have been told that’s the main issue with the 4. The heat sink is trash and after some time, the fan has to go balls to the wall to get the heat out.
      Time will tell.

I think the HDR looks better myself, HDR is not just brightness it is also darkness. And to me, it looks more life like with HDR on, and looks a little less lifelike with it off. I wonder if it matters what television you have.

I think if you do the same HDR test on GTA V, regardless of whether it has it or not (Its just to compare the most recent R* titles peak brightness to RDR2 and not a test of HDR). You will find the exact same nit brightness difference as RDR2.
R* attempts to minimize bright and dim points to a set standard and prefers to use the in game camera to adjust brightness levels when moving from dark to light rather then relying on HDR techniques. But as with GTA V, Calibrating monitor colors correctly will have a huge impact on bright and dark points in any R* game.
