A great video showing the off road versatility of the big Beemers. Tons of water challenges and lots of action. Episode 3: A relatively short 200 kilometres from Gregory Downs Hotel to Hells Gate. What it lacked in distance it certainly made up for in a variety of riding conditions. The highlights included flowing twin trail and three decent water crossings.
Come along with Dave Darcy of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV as he embeds in the challenging 2023 BMW GS Enduro Safari, Cairns to Darwin. It's a tough relentless adventure over 7 days and 3000 dirt kilometres and Dave's there to catch all the action and fun.
AN EXCERPT FROM THE STORY BEHIND THE RIDE
2023 BMW GS ENDURO SAFARI - CAIRNS TO DARWIN
It’s hard to identify that point in time when I realised, I was riding in a fair dinkum BMW Enduro Safari. Was it Day 2, punching out 570 kilometres of unforgiving dirt roads smothered in hand sized rocks, sand and endless bull dust pits? Or was it Day 3, forging deep river crossings and endless twin trail on a huge cattle station the size of a small country in Europe.
I’m now sitting in Darwin, still astride my BMW 1250 GS Trophy looking down at my trip metre that reads, 3,344.4 kilometres. I’m still recovering from what was arguably one of my best days riding I’ve had on a Beemer. Miles Davis, long time BMW off road Guru, had cooked up a mighty crescendo for Day 7, the final day of this Cairns to Darwin ride.
Day 7 had every riding condition for an adventure imaginable and it highlighted the versatility of my Rhino. It started with a 200-kilometre black top section that we legally, the speed limit is 130 ks, covered in around an hour forty mins. Then onto some amazing twisty black top through open farm country before we settled in for the main meal, a blast through a private cattle station on billiard table smooth dirt, four lanes wide with sweeping corners perfectly designed for power sliding.
Despite their width, I still managed to overcook one corner and do a Wayne Gardner esque run into the grass before anxiously looking around to ensure no one saw my foopy. There was a deep river crossing thrown in for good measure, some more twisty black top before finishing on some rutted single trail through a pandanis palm grove and abandoned railway track. Quite a crescendo!
This Beemer clan do things large, so let’s return to the beginning, 7 days earlier. The Saturday afternoon rendezvous was at the opulent Shangri-La Hotel on the waterfront of Cairns. Nothing but the best for our introduction and start to the trip.
I’ve ridden a couple of BMW Safaris that were organised and lead by Chris and Anthea Urqhart and Shane Booth from Moto Development. The events run like a swiss watch but this Safari event was different.
This was an Enduro event and from the first briefing it was obvious more would be expected from riders. Punching out big miles safely and consistently in the outback is a whole new skill set for many riders who wouldn’t ever dream of going there without support.

Nice, looks like a lot of fun.
It was!
Amazed at the number and depth of the water crossings you have to deal with. Definitely a team effort to get everyone across👍. Another outstanding episode - thank you for sharing.
This was a brilliant day and don't the Beemers do it well.
Australians see “Stunning Setting” and “Unique landscape”. Europeans see “Barren Wasteland” 🤣 Great video as usual though guys! 😎👍
You sound like my European wife she hates the outback. :). When you're in it, with huge horizon and endless dirt roads it takes over you.
Huge respect to you guys 👍
thank you@@Rocketboy-qg6ts
Awesome ride boys great watching
Glad you enjoyed it
I am on the edge of my seat watching your adventures the Rider Skill set is amazing, lots of practice and experience...well done...David...Adelaide/Kilburn Tiger 900GT & Scrambler.....
Glad you liked it Dave
Like you guys picking the best spot to view the carnage in the sand. Thanks for the laughs Dave.
Glad you enjoyed it
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV will definately try to make next year's run on the f800gs with the best colour, orange.
Just goes to show, those big ass BMW’s can handle fairly hard off roading. Couldn’t help but notice, you were almost always the first to assist those baptismal drops, well done. 👍🏼 😎 🇺🇸 🌎
They are an amazingly capable machine and you're talking to someone who wasn't a fan up until a couple of years back when I rode one in difficult terrain. As for the water, I'm always there looking for camera action! :)

Good on you Mate, you’re a valuable team player, cameraman or not. 👍🏼
no way!
Yes!
Fantastic adventure indeed.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good vid Dave. Hell of a ride so far. Looks like it get's a a lot more interesting. Nothing like a beach on the trail. Take care.
I loved that day.
cracking video again Davo, would love to hammer it down those tracks on my Rhino !! 😀
It really is a fantastic bike for that kind of stuff.
Awesome footage Dave, I remember all three creek crossing well, but not much after that, RFDS flew me out that night from Hells Gate and spend 7 nights in Mt Isla ICU, recovering well back at home in Melbourne and can't wait for the second leg next year Darwin To Broom. great episode HWY58
I remember riding past you, Right hand turn with a bit of tricky sand.
Yeah that was me. All the BMW Safari guys and girls are fantastic and so professional. The Doctors and Paramedics were on the scene in minutes. I can’t thank them enough for all their efforts and care.
I broke my head in choosing between GSA 1250 and Royal Enfield Himalayan. My fear is weight of GSA… Thanks for your videos it help to understand capabilities of GSA
GSA is highly capable
you guys had a lot more fun 6 years ago on the tiny bmw's.....that was my fav stuff.....all these bikes, just injuries waiting to happen. seriously you guys should have a think and chat on these 1250's
I love the 1250 for the outback. They do everything.
Love the music at the start of the video, what is it?
Love your channel ❤ regards from Sweden.
Band is called Albatross
Dave great to see you guys on BMW s 🎉😊 I can't say a lot about them coz it's BMW who gave husqvarna the design for the 701 LR wasn't it 🎉😊
Thanks Cliff for dragging yourself away from a Husky cuddle to spend the evening at MADTV :)
Dave as good as the OEM suspension is....Have you ever ridden a GS that has Tractive shocks with auto rebound and manual high and low speed compression settings?
Nope
Keep it running keeps water out of exhaust , of course, as long as the air intake isn't below water line.
Nope, always stop them, Exhaust doesn't matter. Ask a BMW technician if you don't believe me. He was the one standing next to Sean when that lady went under water big time.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV ok?? But there is very hot valves and a piston or pistons that doesn't like cold water flooding in , so be sure if water enters to stand bike up on the back tire to drain it out with gravity. 😀 and yes, I enjoy your videos
@@MADDOG100ful I'm going with the technician from BMW. Also the trainers who train this technique. Not one rider drowned their bike because water wasn't sucked into the air intake.
Dave do they have someone on the opposite side of the river before entering the river telling people to turn off their traction control ?
Andrew
They have someone showing best line and in one instance at a gravelling crossing yes. You can here him shouting out at the last crossing.
did you turn TC off? Im in Enduro? Classic
Yes it was, that's why I left it in.
BMW reallly gained confidence in there fording ability. The snorkel on my Oilhead was just below the tank. It might have drunk a little on those crossings.
Up high now. I can't get over how riders can lay them down and pick them up and they still go.
What song/band is that 1st song around 40 seconds into the video? I searched the lyrics and can’t find anything.
Search Musicbed
You carry on like a pork chop.
Can i know what song it's?a country song
By band Albatross.
"Try and get it up!" "Pull Pull Pull Pull! Sounds like my wife last night😂
