- We begin planting corn with the John Deere 4640 and the 1760! First we had to wrinkle out any problems there could've been, such as a blown hydraulic hose and a corn seed lodged in one of the seed meters that was making a clicking noise!

How Farms Work is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
What is popup is it an sterter fertiliser
The pop-up fertilizer we're putting down is 6-26-6 with zinc. It's meant to get the seeds an extra kick to get out of the ground and get started.
Oh
Ryan is calling it correct. I've been in the farming industry since the mid 80's and it's always been called "pop-up". It is totally different from "starter" fertilizer as "pop-up" is made to be placed directly in the seed furrow and make the corn "pop-up" out of the ground faster. It only helps for a about a week or so till the roots find the other fertilizer.
Soon it will be common to control the placement of the stream within the seed trench. I just put capture insecticide. We put the fertilizer behind the closing wheel. It is easy to damage germination putting it that close.
Our starter fertilizer goes in furrow
The sound of that 4640 starting up is what dreams are made of.
Nothing like the sound of a 40 or 50 series John Deere starting up cold! I will never get tired of that sound. Newer tractors just don't have the manly sound.
Loved the 46 start up. SWEET!
I think Rocket's happy planting has begun!
your papa is doing a dam good job.you guys are real good farmers.and the help of rocket also.sam
Please don't stop. You are doing everything right. I will see you at your big event in June. Thanks, Bryan.
Awesome planting video. Liked the drone views and the up close of looking how deep the seed is.
I love the 4640!!! That tractor is the one JD, that will always remain closest to my heart, when it comes to equipment.
Thank you Ryan, great eyes catching the Deer antlers.
nothing like the turbo whistle of the 4640
that is sad that the money is not good from youtube. You post great videos and I enjoy them all thanks Ryan.
Use "Pay Me" to receive donations from "Pay Pal" it works.
Love that 4640 starting up...they excellent tractors!!
You should contact those ad companies on your own and put the add up before the video. Take CZcams out of the mix.
Great videography, Ryan. While most of your various farming tasks are absolutely routine and perhaps mundane to you, the way you capture them for the rest of us makes them compelling. You are right that the Earthmaster VT is a real gem and a valuable asset for your operations. When it comes time to pay the piper for that piece of equipment, it should be less painful knowing how useful it has been for the last couple of years. Regarding CZcams, I sincerely wish they'd find a way to get back to doing business the way they did before the Adpocalypse and all the shadowy censorship that came in its aftermath. I'm a sufficiently "regular" viewer that notifications have never been an issue for me with your channel, but when I'm supposed to be moderating for Travis on his livestreams, I often won't see anything about it for several minutes after it starts. Hopefully, you have a financially-viable path forward once your network goes away, because you are one of the best creators on this website, in my humble opinion, and you do deserve some kind of compensation for the extensive work that you put into all your videos. Thank you for keeping us in the know as much as you do with what is going on from your perspective.
Great video Ryan love that 4640!!!
Always nice to see well taken care of equipment out in the Feilds doesn't look like a hair of rust on either the tractor or planter
Can't believe Travis missed the bad hose. One bad hose isn't a bad first day of planting.
Fields are looking great. I watch more youtube than reg. T.V. I hope they get it together & make it worth while for you guys. thanks for the hard work you do making these videos...
Very nice ground for sure! Thanks again for your video.
Great video that equipment looks so clean. Good luck with your planting season
You have great creative content, start a patreon page. We are a family farm from southeastern Wisconsin and I always look forward to seeing that 4640 (we have one also). I also think that maybe start an advertising campaign of sorts for your farm days?
Newer isn’t always better - that 4640 proves it! Sorry about your ad revenue, that’s a bummer. I love your channel!
Its so cool to see you painting aready up here in wyoming theres so much rain we cant do much with our ground so i hope your day was good have fun
Amen it’s a happy time on every farm unless something breaks
Good to see Ryan everyone is getting started. Nice video
Good stuff as always Ryan. Hope CZcams gets over their problems they have had of late. Would hate to see fewer videos from you and your family.
Although I dont always comment. I always enjoy your videos along with Travis Videos as Well. I gotta say although I was raised on J.I. Case, IH & A.C. Farm Equipment. My famlies Roots go back with Deere to the Popping John Days on my dad's side. Along JD Construction equipment. (Steady problems with a 4320 or 4520 Deere back in th day made my dad's family go to another brand just before I came along)& my Mom's side of the family Used Deere lawn equipment in a small lawn care business when I was growing up. I always liked the sound of 40,50 &55 Series Deere Tractor. Rocket always looks ready to ride. It's Sad that CZcams is cutting back on paying Channels. @ 1st I thought it was just certain style of channels but now it seems to be all across the board. & the more I look@ it, it boils down to greed. 😒 Mack
Thank you for this excellent explainer.
Nice to see you are planting up there here in ca the winter crops are common off an new crop is going in
The 4640 sounds good
Another professionally done video Sorry to hear that proceeds from youtube are slowing. your efforts and the quality of your work is appreciated. Thanks
4640 looks sharp! Good horse! I put a blend of phosphate/sulphur/32%/zinc on all my corn!! Money well spent here!!!! Kansas....
As a retired farmer pop up fertilizer helps seed germination regardless of soil type. Modern fertilizer that has NPK in them plus sulfur for corn is great 😎
I appreciate you explaining every thing thanks.
Thanks for explaining the marker arm!!!
great video Ryan!!!!!!
Thank you
Another cracking quality vid Ryan... Thanks for sharing...
Love your choice of music. Reminds me of the show Serenity!
I like how farms work I want to be a farmer when I grow up
Ryan- I was going to ask about the arm. I thought I knew what it was for but you answered my question before I could ask. Thanks
We just called it a row marker. You just aim the tractor along it and you get the rows aligned.
AWD3264 Yep, that what I got out of the video. Thanks also.
AWD3264 but if you are planting using one of the forms of GPS you don't need the row markers.
Til the GPS wigs out or loses signal or something and you have nothing to go by... OL J R :)
John should sponsor you ... hahaha
Thanks for the video just learned a few things
Best 4640 start up
You are making everything much more complicated than it needs to be. According to Michael Bloomberg, all you have to do is dig a hole, put a seed in it, and give it a little bit of water. He even said that he can train anyone to be able to do that
Great video, we just started planting today in northern Ohio. #PLANT18
Thanks for the videos
I think its a combination of the ads not generating enough sales and CZcams's need to always be getting higher revenue for the shareholders, so they will give fewer pennies those creating content. The exceptions will be people who are already rich and famous who can draw large crowds and of course sponsored channels.
That drone is like TV quality!
Great video Ryan keep up the great work.
Love the drone footage! This summer when I’m haying I’m getting a drone to get some shots!
Hi Ryan thought I would say hi I been watching your videos like always I do enjoy them lot keep up too next time have good day
Great video. Loved the drone shots
Your new drone is working great!
very cool video
We had a 4640 , loved it except it had front wheel assit and it would always blow hydraulic hoses . It didnt matter if we used OEM or aftermarket hoses.
Great video. Love all the footage and great quality!
You could take the cat for a ride too 😺😺😺 !!!
cool vid!
you should get a patreon account, im sure you would get lots of support.
Awesome video and really nice drone work
Awesome video. I have to get my model farm planting
Great vid Ryan
Nice deer shed
Hey
Can you please do a machinery tour and past and present machinery that you guys had over the years
John Haas ok thanks heaps
Great video.
Great video man!!! I love your channel!!!!
I learn a lot
Hurry up! Bad weather coming!
Have you thought about starting a Patreon for those of us who enjoy your videos and would like to support more content creation directly?
Nice and neat video
Rocket is so funny
great video
Hi love the video good work
Even though I live here in Hawaii, I enjoy telling all my friends about your awesome channel, Ryan!! Hope all settles to your favor with CZcams, cause you deserve a great reward for your EXCELLENT job of chronicling (sp?) life there on your farms!! Blessings > :o)
Do a farm tour.
awesome vid
You guys ever tried any spiked closing wheels instead of the rubber?
.... Rocket don't smoke, and Rocket don't joke...
Funny how your constantly asked all winter where is the Denali and you finally are driving it and nobody notices.
It works now
If you'd put pop on you're better ground what do you think you'd gain by using vs not using it? We always run starter or pop even on the better ground with excellent results on the better ground
We were told using it on good ground that you just won’t have as good of a response. With crop prices as they are, we’re on a budget.
Crop prices aren't very good at the moment even futures aren't looking great either
Next year put less broadcast P and put popup on the good ground. A leaf tissue might tell you what works.
I just wish somebody could show somebody bedding with the old john deere hipper bedder that 4640 would sound nice with a crome pipe what is it powershift or quadrange I drove both
How did you get rocket to jump in your tractor. For the life of me I have to pick my dogs but up every time in to my 8335r. I shure of envy of you guys planting I miss the howling of the vac planter. We’re just dairy alfalfa growers now.
The outrigger marks the center of the next pass?
depends how you have it set up
Ya you just line the tractor up to it
i am planting Corn at about 1 inch deep in Mexico but in irrigation area
corn needs to be deeper to have a good root stem or it can lodge.
If you cultivate you will have more root cover.
Sure is pretty. Rain in San Diego and all runs right to the ocean. Stop using but recycle and reuse, not this crazy state. Good luck with the crops.
Ryan, if you ever get a bigger planter would it make sense for you to pull it with the 8235R? also great vid!
superliner 101 with a 1000 acres and planting contours and strips, 12 rows is plenty big.
In NZ i was taught that seeds should be planted at 2-2.5 time the seed depth why do you aim for 2 inches?
Show some video of you loading the planter
Ryan, why do you zig zag around properties when planting
Zig zag as in on the farm itself? They're contours and meant to slow erosion
ok thanks,,,
Love to the 4640 starting up
You oughtta put Jamie back in a few videos.
Hello Rayn, can`t wait for farm day 2018 #farmday2018
why were the seeds red and what was the black powder dumped in as well? Love the videos keep em coming!
Chris Miller seed corn is pink because it is coated with a fungicide to protect it. It can be other colors but the most common is pink. The black powder is graphite which helps the seed flow through the planter.
Jeff Gixer thanks for the reply! Makes sense
Great video! Is the 4640 the tractor you still like best, or do you prefer the newer ones with more electronics and latest tech?
Greetings from Germany!
That would have problay been a good 8 point deer. Do you go hunting Ryan I do for deer, squirrel and rabbit and other stuff like that
Were going throw a bad drought in Missouri
Ryan, what does it mean to chisel a field?
