  • This was a decision to replace my Honda with the Toro. I do like the Honda but there are some things that were driving me nuts. I am super happy with the Toro and I will be keeping it. Maybe if Honda redesigns it in the future I will buy one. If they would allow vertical storage and redo the bagging area setup I would consider it again. Here are the links below to help out the affiliate channel. Also use ethanol free gas is a must to prolong your lawn equipment also link below you can purchase online and pickup at your near by store. Thank you

    This link if for the new model that replaced the one on the video. This new model does not have the Smartstow to put vertical but does have the 163cc motor. I purchased and didn't notice so I returned it. The 150cc motor does come with the Smartstow setup model (21465) not sure why they did this since the one that I currently have does come with the Smartstow and the 163cc motor. Really Toro.

    Great Review; I narrowed the width of the Honda by cutting out 2 short sections on the top, added some industrial padding on the bends and glued some heavy duty shade cloth on the catcher to stop the dust. Does the job well with the mods which I need to do in order for it to work for me. I also brush the base when dry and spray it every now and then to reduce the risk of rust.

      Thanks that is a good mod. I love the drive lever on the Honda and the cut quality. Oh and the mulch lever I dont like to add a mulch plug. I have been contemplating to buy the Honda again and adding a B&S 163cc engine so I can store on the corner. I think that would be a perfect setup and your idea of the mods. I ended up add a piece of foam to the Honda cover so it wont send the dust into my face and worked well.

    I have always had good service out of all the Toro mowers that I have owned , usually the self propel unit goes out after a few years, but the parts are easy to get and relatively cheap and not too difficult for a average skill home owner to do the repair , even when the drive unit goes out the motors have always started every time and never had any carb problems, I'm sure the Honda is better, but I can always find people selling a almost new Toro mower on Craigs list or other sites for about half their retail price all day, but rarely see similar Honda mowers at bargain prices or if people are selling one, asking too much for it

I did own 3 Hondas now I love the Toro but do miss the self propelled better than the personal pace setup from Toro. Toro does turn on with the first pull every time. I just purchased the new version with the vortex setup but the 163cc engine doesnt come with the vertical storage setup but the smaller 150cc version does so I am reviewing this one and will post soon and will determine if to keep or send back. Spraying a not-too-thick coat of "Fluid Film" under the deck helps for rust prevention and keeping grass from sticking. Any lanolin-based spray will do, and they are generally available at any auto parts store and Wally-World, too (sometimes). Dust will stick to it but that ends up actually being a good thing, keeping water from getting through to the metal and grass from sticking at all.

    i think you hit the nail on the head.. hopefully you got it sold already..Honda were Normally very reliable however as of 2021 they have fallen off i was in the market for a new mower and the frequency of complaints of drive belt issues and the drive engagement cable popping out of the house i just stay away went with a Toro super recycler and it's really smooth even more so than the regular recycler only thing i would recommend is adjusting the personal pace drive cable if u want it more snappy and less effort it felt like doing burn outs in the lawn after adjusting it.. For 2022 i haven't heard any fixes with the Honda mowers only that Honda is getting out of the walk behind mower business as of 2023 ..

      Hello I like my Toro I removed the personal pace and its manual now and love it. For some reason mine doesnt climb well. This is my second one and does the same thing. I have adjusted the cable many times but still same issue on the climb only. Now its more snappy and love it. The climbing improved with the manual setup but still needs a bit more. I can adjust cable only so far because it gets to a point that wont let you reverse. I am good now and even tried adjusting the idle lever and it revs higher but still wont climb like the 163cc one that I had. I didnt buy the new 163cc because smart Toro didnt make it to smartstow and I love that option. I was hopping they would improve the mower for 2023 and nope still dont have the single height adjustment or labels on the wheels for height. I love the mulch lever for me is a must I dont think paying $600 for a mower and have to install a much plug is my thing. Maybe for 2024 they will fix these issues. I am very hesitant to go with electric mower. I have battery blower and do like it.

    3 suggestions: 1) mulch instead of bag, it helps your lawn. 2) don’t hang your mower as it doesn’t take up that much room, 3) save money and buy a lawnmower with a Honda motor but not a Honda mower.
    I own a lawnmower with a Honda motor but it’s not a Honda and I love it as it starts on 1 pull of the cord and it cuts beautiful.
    When I switch between bagging & mulching, I don’t have to mess with a lever to switch modes & I don’t have issues with the bagging section.

    I've had a Honda and a Toro and I just love the personal pace on the Toro to the point that it makes it hard to consider ever switching. I agree on the design to raise and lower the deck, it's very aggravating as I cut the backyard at a different height than the front. A lever that changed the height on all the wheels would be a welcomed addition on these machines.

    • @ExtremDIY
      @ExtremDIY  Před rokem +1

      Yes that lever and labels will be a game changer for Toro. I dont understand why they are being so hard headed about that. They would sell so many more units and a couple of other updates but mainly that lever. I actually removed the personal pace and installed the lever on the cheap model and I like it better. I purchased the new one with the Vortex system and regret selling the model on this video because its better than the new one so if you have it dont sell it. I got the one with the 150cc motor since the one with the 163cc motor doesnt come with the smartstow. Here is Toro messing it up again they are the same model but one has the smartstow and the 163cc doesnt. My issue the new one doesnt have enough power to climb the back yard that has a slope. I returned it thinking it was one bad but the other one does the same so I have to constantly push it. By installing their regular handle it works better now it actually pull me instead of pushing it. I spent some time adjusting the clutch but didnt make a different. I do use my blower on the machine when done to clean it. Most machines need to be cleaned after use. In dry season when I bag all the dust goes on your face. If you dont have the bag on the machine you wont have that issue. This occurs in areas where there are a lot of dirt or dry leaves. When cutting areas where the grass is nice and green there is no issue with the dust. Specially under trees were the grass doesnt grow I would have the issue not in areas where the grass was nice and green. Like I mentioned I do like the machine but I wanted to store it vertical so decided on the Toro.

    Is the toro recycler considered to be commercial grade?

    • @ExtremDIY
      @ExtremDIY  Před 3 lety +2

      Hello I believe this model if for the homeowner use not the commercial grade ones. They have the commercial ones on their website. I almost purchased one and it was solid but I wasnt sure if I was going to like the Toro since I had been using Honda for so long and the price was too much for me. It will take a beating but I am little concerned about the drive system. Mine makes a little noise but I did purchase pre owned. I love the motor it starts right up with no issues. I also have one that I use on the mountain bike trails and that one we abuse it like hell and its still runs like a champ. We cut super high grass with rocks and pretty rough surfaces and no complaints yet. I believe the commercial ones are heavier also with cast aluminum deck. I was going to get the super recycler but was more money and didnt like the all black so I went with this one and love it. Also its light enough that I can pick it up and put in the back of my suv or in the trails we also have a Toro Utility ATV and can easily pick it up on my own. The deck is rusting a bit thats the only beef I have with it but it was like that when I got it. I think this one runs like $399 at Homedepot I have the link above. Might want to take a ride to your local Toro dealer to check them out. I fell in love with the commercial models but was too expensive for home use. Hope this helped. thank you

      Hello the Honda performs good on high grass with the twin blade but if grass is too too high it can suffer a little since it doesnt have a side shoot. Honda has a rear shoot which I am not a fan of. I never had an issue with the Honda and I owned 3 different ones. I just wanted a mower that can be stored against the wall so I went with the Toro. Honda cuts a little better to my opinion and bags with no problem. Its got power but I think the Toro has a little more as long as you get the Briggs 163 cc or higher. This Toro on the video bags perfect and has the side shoot so when you have high grass it shoots out the side and works awesome. We have a Toro just like this one in our mountain bike trail shop and we use it to cut super high grass and it works great. Now the new Toro system with the new rear shoot and black bag dont work the same in my opinion. I have the newer Toro with the 150 cc motor and it doesnt bag as good it gets stuck sometimes not sure if its the lower power or the new design of the deck. I have a video posted if you want to see it. The reason I didnt buy the Toro with the 163cc motor it doesnt come with the smartstow setup like the 150cc motor which makes no sense to me. If you need power and will be cutting a large lot with higher than normal grass maybe the Toro TimeMaster can work but its $1500 with twin blades. Toro has the super recycler with more power also but more money. Hope this helps.

    I have a toro recycler and I personally hate it I have had it for 3 or so years and there is no easy way to change the oil I find if it had a 21 inch deck instead of 22 it would be slightly better because the engine will bog down less, I find it is an extremly underpowered machine everytime I use it it stalls out at least once when I mow my lawn (I mow once a week) I am never going to buy another toro

    • @ExtremDIY
      @ExtremDIY  Před 3 lety +2

      Hello which engine do you have? In my home its never even slowed down or turned off on me. I have a large lot with some incline. This one has the Brigs motor on it with plenty of power. maybe the one you have is either defective or has a different motor on it. I also have one in the mountain bike trails that we maintain and we abuse the crap out of and it does sometimes turn off but its like 2 feet of grass or it picks up a rope or debris. Changing the oil is super easy just warm it up and take the dip stick out and tilt it into a drain pan. Love to Toro so far but I do miss the drive train on the Honda but that is it. Hope you find the one you like. I do enjoy the mowing and it makes the cutting experience better when you love your equipment. Thank you

      Agree. The Toro I used was the 140cc and it was terribly underpowered. It stalls out like crazy. I had to mow the grass at a higher height, then lower it on the 2nd pass. My Honda mower is a GCV170 and it destroys everything in its path. Love it.

    I bought a Honda HRR 5 years ago and ended up giving it away. Worst piece of crap I ever owned. Had a defective carburetor right out of the box. The Honda power products dealer put a new one on it under warranty, and that one didn’t work either. Three times a charm.
    A year later, the self propelled transmission failed. The next season the axle bushings seized. (Honda uses a steel axle, that runs thru a steel bushing, that passes thru a steel holder.) Geez... what could go wrong?!?! Toro uses sealed ball bearings.
    Lastly... I had to cut my lawn twice with the Honda as it left stray grass blades sticking up with one pass (even with new or freshly sharpened blades).
    Most of my neighbors have Toro Personal Pace mowers (two are 20 years old) and they never have problems.
    I dumped my Honda for a Toro and and never looked back.

Looking to possibly upgrade the gas one to the new 163cc Recycler Max with the 5 year warranty and the handle suspension like the super recycler. The gas one I have has the 150cc motor and sometimes struggles. I have also the 60v super and 60v recycler. I enjoy all of them. I did remove the personal pace out of the gas one and kind of like it better but lacks power to move when cutting on inclines I end up pushing it. Thanks

      Hello yes engine is great but the dust drove me crazy. I did glue a piece of foam across the top of the cover and helped a lot plus like I mentioned in the video I used Flex seal from Homedepot and sprayed some on the inner part of the bag but only the top section and also helped slow down the dust. I had made a video about it but never put it together and now I cant find it. It did help overall with the cutting in the dry season. I was told also to cut early in the morning the day after the sprinklers turn on and would help with the dust issue. Hope this helps. Thank you

      Hello I called Honda and they confirmed it will leak oil and gas. They said it was not designed for the vertical storage. Mine started leaking like the second day it was on the wall. I would had loved to keep the Honda but both the gas and the oil leaked. I then added a seal to the idle lever and still would leak in about 3 days. Thats when I called them and they said no no to the wall idea. So I kept the Toro but its not a bad machine despite many reviews with idle and carburetor issues. I had 3 Hondas and never had an issue with the machine or cut quality but the bagging section was a common issue many have. I just wanted to store it vertical that's all.
