I owned both the HRN and the Toro Recycler with electric start. To me the Honda is worlds better. Try adjusting the height on the Toro. It is a major pain and very difficult. You have to adjust each wheel and to move the lever takes a lot of effort. Now try it on the Honda. A single EASY to move lever raises and lowers both front wheels at the same time and the same for the back that is, a single lever. Now move on to how much effort it takes to roll the mover backwards. The Toro's drive mechanism results in any thing but a free wheeling experience. On the toro it takes a lot of effort to roll the mower backwards. The Honda HRN rolls effortlessly in the reverse direction. Now on to the way the mowers are driven forward. The Toro's forward drive mechanism is cumbersome and as he says very awkward. Making turns with the Toro also for some reason not as easy to do as with the Honda HRN. IMO the Honda is a far better machine than the Toro. Also never had an issue with the autochoke and neither has my neighbor who owns one as well.
Plus, there are so many people reviewing the Toro’s from multiple stores saying their decks are rusting through after only one season, I went with the Honda.. so many bad reviews on the Toro’s. Only issues with the Honda is a little piece that can be replaced easily and cheaply.. yep, Honda for me.

I like your style John, the Honda HRN is a very well manufactured machine! I just don't understand why is leaves some grass blades uncut? TORO hands down .Mowing heights are adjustable 1/2in incumbents. Smart Stow is the best feature. I can keep my deck clean and sharpen blades easy. I use a Bulldog flat blade for bagging. Season 3 with my Toro. I love it.
When I first got my Toro personal pace I was popping wheelies. Then I stopped trying to push the bar down and just pushed forward and suddenly all was revealed. lol I frankly love it the thing mulches great and powers up my hill and I don't have to push at all. I have the Briggs & Stratton version which is the only one available anywhere locally. That said my last two mowers were Briggs & Stratton engines and I've never had any issues with them. One died hitting a brick in some tall grass, the other is 5+ years old and fine but is my backup mower and kills my back because the bar is so low.
That said in all my small engines I always run high octane gas, and Marvel's mystery oil mixed with it. I've done this with weed eaters, chainsaws, and mowers for decades. I've never had to carbon clean a head, or had any engine or carb issues since I started doing it.

I'm a toro guy grew up with craftsman but the first non craftsman mower I got was a toro still runs and has only ever had one issue a small leak after 7 years of heavy use
For the sake of the people watching this, I had this Toro mower for years and it has its pros and cons. Main thing is, the side shoot that this guy loves is honestly a pain in the ass and personally I hated it. The side shoot is held on by 2 little tabs and the plastic flap holds it on by spring pressure so the slightest little thing knocks it off. I was constantly putting that thing on. Especially if the grass is the least bit thick and more than 6 inches high. If you pull backward on thick grass, the grass itself is enough to puul that dinky little flimsy side shoot off. It drove me crazy. The other thing is, without the side shoot on it doesn't have the power to mow as a mulcher and would bog down horribly. Even to the point of shutting off and often. I was always pulling that cord before I got the side shoot. Can't win with that Toro. If it's a mulcher it's going to bog and bog and you will have to pull and pull to keep starting it, and if it's the side shoot you're going to be stopping to pick the damn shoot up and reinstall it and then start the thing up again. I sold it to my nephew. Glad to see it go too.
Agreed my toro is a gutless pig to be honest. Not impressed with mine at all and will be buying a honda for my last lawnmower i will hopefully ever have to buy.
I've got a Honda HRX217 that I love, except for one issue.
The hubs (rear first, followed by the front), holding the bearings get wallowed out and sloppy. They then wobble back and forth until I pony up for replacements. Am I doomed to replacing the cheap plastic wheels every 2 or 3 years?
Are there any brands that use metal or high quality wheels that can hold up over time? I've pondered the yBravo/Badboy 25" commercial mower.
I mow slightly over 1/2 acre of non-flat lawn and prefer rear wheel drive.
I had an old Honda without any self propelled, never had any issues starting or with power, would start first pull after winter. I sold it and got a Toro because youtube people convinced me I needed personal pace. First got one with a brigs and had tons of issues with power, getting bogged down mowing my fescue/bluegrass lawn at the tallest setting. Sold that and got another Toro with their own engine it and had tons of trouble getting it started. I sold that and got the brand new HRN, All the prevous mowers were used and the HRN is my first brand new mower. Honda engines are just better, haven't had any problem with the auto choke, but seems like an easy fix compared to just replacing the carb every year and hoping it starts. I also do prefer the Honda self propelled system, the Toro is harder to make tight turns or turn around.
I purchased the toro (black) deck with Briggs and Stratton engine has mulch plug which I don't like... I don't remember using it in early spring , but unboxed and used it late spring. I don't like the personal pace at all. I do like the wider deck and real tires and do like side discharge. All in all I do believe I made the right choice for now... I saw a couple returns at home depot for the the Honda Hrn216. If I had it to do over I would of purchased the toro red super recycler and not from a dealer but Home Depot or LOWE'S... lol
Bought the HRN216VKAA last fall from HD to replace my 10-year-old Toro that was getting pretty old--but still starts and runs. I used the Honda once in the late fall (about one hour) before storing it away for the winter, with fresh stabilized gas. I think I might need shoulder surgery now from trying to start the Honda today, with no success. I've read a couple of CZcams posts (including this one) and it seems like Honda has dropped a dud on us. I have owned several mowers, but I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS MOWER!! I hope it's still under warranty, haven't checked yet. I don't want to order and install the "thermowax: actuator and shouldn't have to in order to get a mower to start that's less than a year old! Tomorrow I will pull out the old Toro from the back of the shed. I have no reason to expect it won't start after 3-4 good pulls. If I can return the Honda to HD, I will definitely walk out of there with the Toro Recycler!
This is why there's warranties and why buying from servicing dealers matters. Things happen.
I personally owned the toro personal pace mower with the Briggs and Stratton for 9yrs with absolutely 0 issues. I loved the personal pace speed control. I gave it away to a friend 2yrs ago that was having financial issues. I then used the old trusty John deer mower I had but it recently started smoking so I just purchased the Honda HRN with the GVC170. Hopefully its just as reliable as my trusty ole toro!

Just bought the Honda and I'm impressed. They seemed to have fixed the auto choke and a gas cap breather issue. Starts on first pull easily. I don't need to overlap and mulching is superb, even with grass that's taller than it should be (provided it's dry), and it doesn't bog down. Needed to tweak height of the drive control to allow desired speed range - a suggestion to those that find it finicky - also try using palm of hand to hold it down vs thumbs.
It replaced a 15 yr old Craftsman with B&S engine (made by Husqvarna). That one did require overlaps and still tended to leave wheel marks in the grass. Mulching on it left clumps and long blades if grass had gotten tall. It didn't bog down though. Major parts like wheels and drive system and internal deck mulching liner were wearing out and those parts were getting hard to find. Time to replace.

In my limited experience as a small engine mechanic (2015-16), I've noticed that the honda gcv160s had an issue where the the cam belt had a small tendency to slip off the gear. Honda offered new valve covers with welded in tabs, and outside of that, they were pretty good reliable engines. I have a smart stow toro (with the briggs 163 cc engine), and I love it. :)

This is why I prefer mowers with manual chokes and primers, there is just less to go wrong. I’ve had my Toro since 2005 and it has never had a problem. It uses a 6.5 HP Tecumseh engine with a primer style choke system and it still works great to this day.

The reason for idle was the valve. You got to turn it. So it don't leak when lifting. It was smart idea if your mowing several lawns.

I had same problem with my honda HRN. right after buying and another time service replays carburetor. After all I start use ' no ethanol gas'. 2 years - no problem!
I am currently returning the Toro 163cc and looking at the Honda HRN. The issue I have with the Toro is there is not enough power on slopes and my yard is mostly slopes. Do you think the incremental difference in cc's on the HRN will be sufficient for a mostly sloped yard? I had to put way too much personal power into the uphill task on the Toro. Thanks! I am also considering the 190cc from both manufacturers. I replaced a Husqvarna AWD 190cc which worked great.
you might go up a notch to the HRX as it’s even beefier and torquier…but I have the hrn w/bladestop (which actually sucks up a small amount of power over the regular version but I love the convenience…plus I came from a gcv160 and definitely notice more power and torque in the 170. Part of me thinks I should have got the hrx but even with the bladestop version it was like $250 ish more for the equivalent in the hrx. So overall I think I made the right call for me.
@@BigBeardedBubba Thanks! I ended up getting the HRX and I like it. It does not do as well on the slopes as my former AWD Husqvarna, but I am loving the mulching capability and it is working out fine. I'm glad I opted for the HRX.
so is the thermal choke thingy an issue on the mower..or was it just it needed to be warmed up for the 1-3 min before use?

I have the Honda HRX after owning several Toros. Not sure what this guy is talking about of the Honda is such a more quality machine. Why do u think the upgraded Toros in super recycler models come with HONDA engines !!

I have had my Honda exact same one for 1 season and beat the hell out of it because I use it commercially and never even drained the grass out the carb and it has done me wonders this mower is great I don’t know what this guy is talking about

Thanks for this information bro. Tires are not great on previous hondas those little square grids also on old hondas the rear pulley seised up on two different machines both honda and both while using the mulcher plug no more honda for me , a positive with honda is handle is most durable and it has a great bag that's never clogs , I buy awd huskavarna it's better than mowers used in past.

You meant the new Honda mower model HRN216 have such problem? If I wanted to get a new mower, I would think about twice to get a new Honda Mower.
I use to own a Toro but I had to physically prime it every time I used it. But now I own a US made in North Carolina Honda HRX217VKA and I have the same surging issue whenever I turn the gas valve switch to "off" after I turn my Honda on its side (carburetor up) to clean the underside with either air or a water hose. Wait a minute after starting and turn the on/off valve back on again and the surging goes away.
The auto choke only affects the starting of the engine the auto choke has little to do with the engine while its running. All the auto choke does is close the butterfly and choke the engine allowing the engine to start with a richer mixture of gas vs air.
And even with the Toro if you don't overlap you will see rows of grass sticking up where you once passed. I agree with you that anyone would be happy with either mower but the made in USA Honda twin blade feature is a pretty big thing. If you bag your grass cuttings the twin blades cut the grass up into very even and uniform 3/8" of an inch grass blade cuts. These cuttings break down and compost quickly whether you reuse the cuttings for redressing your lawn or leave it on the grass for mulch.
And to underscore the fact that a Honda engines life cycle is extremely long is an understatement in itself. A Honda engine is good enough for other manufacturers and long time Honda owners to brag about their Honda branded engine.
And lastly the reason why I love my Honda is straight out of the shed the first cut of the season pull on the starter recoil and it starts.

I’ve always been a craftsman guy but I got one from Lowe’s two years ago and it was their top of the line. Big motor that used horse power to identify it still and big rear wheel self propelled. Long story short it’s dead and I’m gonna try a Honda or toro this season. Leaning towards the toro.
Thanks for commenting, You can’t go wrong with either one. I do think the Honda is a lil over engineered but that’s why I’m a Auto Tech and not engineer LOL. On the other hand Toro truly focuses on outdoor power equipment and or lawn care 100%, and they offer FREE! repair manuals with great color visuals on select lawn mowers via toro.com when Honda chargers for their repair manuals. If trying to decide just search for most reliable push mowers out there. I don’t know if toro is one of them. I can tell you this though, Honda is made with common sense. Air filter can be opened in one second, no tools needed. The spark plug right where it can be changed in front of the motor, the oil spout with the perfect angle so you can do your oil change without making a mess. The handle can be folded without tools or multiple turns of a handle. Only a quarter turn unlocks the handle and folds away and fits anywhere. Honda also sales a $15 kit that includes the oil, spark plug, and air filter. I just feel life is common sense mower. Good luck deciding.
@@freddyoner went with the Honda. First time trying one out and I love it. Extremely well built and easy to use. The craftsman felt flimsy from day one compared to this thing. The Honda is half as loud as the craftsman and cuts better too. Extremely happy with the purchase and highly recommend the Honda.
I had three Craftsman mowers in the past, but I did not like it any more.

Honda Likes- double blades, 2 point height adjustment, thumb drive system, better bagging.
Honda dislikes- need for over lap(narrow cut), rear discharge (wet grass on boots), RWD, no side discharge, only 170cc(4.5hp)
Toro AWD likes-- All wheel drive, side discharge,
Toro dislikes-- 4 point deck height adjustment (all makers should have 2 point systems in 2021 (C'mon Man!)
don't know how good AWD system is?, only 163cc, don't like the personal pace hear a lot of dislikes, you didn't care for it as well.
I'm not worried about Honda vs Briggs. I have a 2008 Toro with a Briggs that just won't die, everything else is wore out.
Leaning towards the Toro AWD as I have 3 foot deep ditches to mow and can't use a rider and too damn much to weed eat.
Also I am almost 52 now so no spring chicken and my self propel doesn't work anymore on my Toro. I would like to know your thoughts

Great video, with a lot of information. Have you seen the new Recycler models with Vortex Technology? Supposedly, Toro sends out a Discharge Chute that would attach to the bag dock for that model. Wondering if you have tried one?
Yes! I did see the new Vortex Technology, Looks very cool but unfortunately I have not got my hands on it yet. If I buy another mower I think my wife will leave me LOL. I truly believe in Toro as a company so I'm sure it will be awesome. Thanks for watching.

I purchased the Honda hrx 217, it only ran for 25 minutes before breaking down wont start, wont turn over. the dealer did the oil fill and first run. I returned it for refund. Purchased a toro recycler for half the money and it is smooth as silk, awesome lawn mower. Ill never buy a Honda again.
I think you got a dud with the Honda. Isn’t it under warranty? My old hrr216 is tough have ran it 6 years commercially and still going. Just regular maintenance, belts and one pulley. I eat thru a lot of plastic wheels tho. eBay has them for around $20 for 2
Well Johnny I'm making a new video about this problem was we speak LOL. Yes its still under warranty but I was completely wrong about the auto choke failing, I feel like a dumb@ss. The thing around their neck yes it did do something. The helmet sits on that pad. Is so when you get flattened down with somebody's arm your your head doesn't go sideways

Good to hear Mr. Nelson, Since I read the owners manual every night before I go to bed, I overlooked some important information. It states the following.
"To ensure easy restarting and maximum performance from the Auto Choke System, allow the engine to run for at least three minutes after starting a cold engine before stopping the engine. This minimum run time will be longer if the temperature is below 70 °F (21 °C)."

We have a Honda and a Toro.
In dry grass the cut is about even. If the grass is moist at all, the Honda clogs. I think you could mow with the Toro in the rain without issue.

I believe if you keep the deck clean along with grass build up, preventing it from holding moisture, I think the deck will last for years. You should check out TORO's new 21" super recycler, it features a SICK! rust proof cast aluminum deck. John Deere "silver deck" and early model 2 stroke Lawn-Boy lawn mowers were the last two companies to offer cast-aluminum decks, but like always it wasn't cost effective to keep producing them and eventually both brands converted to steel before they were discontinued. I think the average consumer didn't grasp great engineering over cost. I own two 1995 John Deere 14SZ "silver deck" and to this day they still run great! and are free of rust. Because aluminum is a softer metal the only issue, I had was the engine mounting holes rounded out causing excessive vibration when the operating the lawn mower, but a couple of fender washers and external star lock washers fixed the problem. I went with the Toro Recycler Max. My concern was Honda getting out of the lawn and garden segment and the Toro 5 yr warranty. On sale for $499 with a Lowe’s 10% coupon. My last 190cc Toro GTS lasted 13 yrs. Hopefully this one gives me 10. While my analytical brain said Honda, my gut said Toro.

My OL basic HRN Honda has been simpley awesome for myself.
I put rubber tires on her though, makes a HUGE Difference. I found they save on wear, & tear. Also the rubber tires will help make your stripes stand out more too.
I also recommend people to purchase Hondas, or Toro mowers.
Got my hopes on getting a Toro Multiforce in the future.🙂

I've watched a number of reviews and it seems nobody ever figures out how to take the plastic film off the Honda. Lol, that sticker is tough to remove for a reason.
I leave the plastic on as long as possible LOL! I did notice that Honda offers a throttle cable on some models but their currently sold out of that model or discontinued. Thanks for watching

Well, I don’t know about you all but I have a 10+ year old Honda. Never had a problem. Talking about CHINA, toro is known for outsourcing their motors from CHINA. They do have some Honda motor toros out there but why fabricate a mower around a Honda motor if toro motors were better?
Personally I think side mulching gets on the way in narrow places and is more of a personal preference than a good or bad feature.
The Toro’s new throttle bar for the wheels to engage is not only poorly design and engages when not needed but also breaks and cannot be replaced rendering the mower totaled.

It's about selling points. People treat lawn mower engine brands like truck brands some guys only want a Briggs, others a Honda, etc. Toro literally offers Honda, Toro, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton engine variants on all their mowers. So you can basically get a Toro mower with any engine you want.
Toro is the best out there. Nothing can compare.

Both are great but I would lean towards Toro. You can buy parts online straight from the manufacturer, Honda doesn’t offer that they make you find local dealer which is a pain in the butt! Plus, Toro overall customer care is unmatched! They offer free repair manuals online with pictures!!! On most of their outdoor power equipment. One last thing the biggest complaint I hear from friends, coworkers and online reviews is that the Honda HRN leaves uncut grass blades which I can verify.
What I think is that you are a Toros lover
I just bought the HRN and I'm not to impressed by the cut. I like my yard at 3.5-4 inches tall and it doesn't seem there's enough suction to lift grass blades at that deck height even with the double lift blades. If I would've know that Honda tuned their motors to 2,600 rpm I would've stayed away. I'll probably return the mower to Lowes and try something else. In the meantime my 12 year old Remington will do and leave a cleaner cut.
Good eye, I noticed the low RPM's as well along with the uncut grass blades $500 later, naturally I contacted Honda customer service and they stated, "lower the deck or make a shorter cutting swath". The cut quality is hands down the biggest complaint I hear, read or talk about. With recent heavy rain in our area, I've been using the mulching bag more than ever and I've been AMAZED! how little I have to stop and empty it, for example when using the HRN on the front yard it only uses 1 yard waste bag compared to my other mowers that use 2 or more yard waste bags. Overall the Honda is a good mower and well manufactured but a little over engineered. TORO and the other hand is far more superior, they have great customer service, finding and buying parts on their website is a breeze and what really shocked me was they offer FREE! repair manuals with colored pictures for most of their products online, when Honda wants $40 a book... plus you cant even purchase parts directly from Honda online you can only make a "wish list" and present it to a local authorized dealer, that's a big turn off to me personally. PRO TIP: You can adjust the governor on your HRN up to 3100 rpms to provide better suction/lift.
@@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 Thanks for the Toro info, I'm going to take all that into consideration with possibly pursuing one of their units. I purchased a tach (in today) and will be adjusting the RPM to see if there's any difference in lift. If I don't see any change in cut I'll set the rpm back to factory and return it. I'll let you know of the results in a few days.

@@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 Hey Kipp! I found that the HRN actually comes out from factory at 2,520, even less than what is claimed. So I tuned the motor up to 3,100. It rained earlier this morning for a few hours and was still wet after work. My grass is a really thick mix of red and tall fescue and some KB. Its heavily fertilized and a drowning of Milorganite. The mower was able to lift and easily mulch without having to go over a second time. However the mover now has a few new slight vibrations and question what is the longevity of the motor now? For homeowners who want the best cut, I'd probably stay away and spend the money on a high-end Toro or Snapper unless your willing to to what I just did.
Well you just said without saying to stay away from the new Honda auto choke mowers, it's back to the red button primer for me.
With Honda pulling out of the market makes me wonder if should buy a Honda specially now

I have trouble believing that the Honda thermal wax was causing the engine to surge. More likely, the carb has some trash from bad gas. The Toro has always been a favorite of mine but that Kohler engine is junk. And, the Kohler auto-choke system has failed as often as the Honda thermal wax type. Best choice is the Honda HRX 217 with a throttle/choke cable system.

The rear discharge Honda would be better than the Toro for they way you mow up and down. Every second row you're dumping cut grass on the long grass you're about to mow. Side discharge really should only be onto the grass that's been cut.

Yeah, the TXP Honda clone from China is gone. Supply issue? Or just junk? Time will tell, I have it on my 2020 Black Super Recycler. My 2003 B&S Super is still going strong but it is all push. I’m 62, not easy on half an acre.

I'm 2 years old using 2 hrn216 to cut 20-33 houses per day and I never had problems and you're going to get me without using it you'd be better hurt tell me you're a bull boy but sling is much better , I use sling because simply the cut is better and it doesn't leave the grass dirty just does a better job with the double blades
Those cheap low line disposable mowers crack me up. The pawn shops here have a ton of those Hondas.

Maybe my toro recycler is a dud because its not very powerful always Boggs down and starts like shit always has. I’m going to be upgrading to the honda model above this one methinks. I’m definitely not impressed with the toro mower but no complaints with the toro snow machine.
Just run some Sea Foam through the Honda and it clears that all up.

Sold my hrx yesterday, crappiest mower I've ever had. Heavy, and 17 inch cut took for freaking ever. Bought a toro timemaster 30 inch. Handles better than the Honda and out mulches it also. Choke never worked right on the Honda from day one, and lousy dealer service.

Honda, Honda, Honda, and toro perhaps can come forth. Let's be honest and stop saying that they are both good products. This misleads new buyers. This honda compared to Toro is a gold Rolex compared to a toy watch. They both show the time but they are not the same and don't hold up the same way. I am not biased to any brand, so I decided to go with a 144cc Toro which was about 120 bucks lower than the honda (329 compared to 450), and faced many problems. The quality didn't feel premium. The handle came curved and I needed to fix it. I know this was my bad luck but also shows the company's poor quality control. It took me 10 times to get it started after choking many times. Things became even worse afterward. It turned off literally a hundred times before I finished half of my yard. Anytime, I used the self-propelled feature it went off, even with me pushing anytime it felt a little bit of more grass intake, it stopped. I decided to return it the same day to Home Depot and get a Honda 170cc from Lowe's and it was a bargain. It started by the first pull, and did the rest of my yard like a piece of cake. Everything felt premium and genuine. unboxing was super easy since the beast slid out of the box on its wheels as soon as I opened the box. The handle was already attached and you don' need to install it, like the Toro. It is just a top-notch product and I don't regret paying a little more for my honda lawn mover.

Toro sucks… Mine lasted 3 seasons and chucked a rod through the block. Had the oil changed twice a season. Been using my Honda for 5 years with zero issues. Much easier to use. I’ll never own another Briggs. Buy the Honda and never look back.
Don't forget that Honda uses PLASTIC gears in that disposable transmission.

I have both toro and honda now I just bought one it is metal only think I dont like about toro is that the baffle under the bottom broke on mine and metal one on the front kept comming loose I had to weld it on there and the plastic gear box I'm not a fan of I bought the one with the Kohler engine on the toro it runs great other than that.
