EPISODE 3: Staining my reputation (and the boat's too...)- Building a wood strip kayak

  • Building a kayak!
    From scratch!
Now that the wood strip hull is fully assembled, it's time to clean up the exterior surface in preparation for adding fiberglass. In this video I finish shaping the semi-inverted bow of the kayak, make multiple rounds of sanding and fairing of the hull, and decide that a random stained geometric pattern will look pretty cool while still keeping the character of the wood.
    Thanks for watching!

Great craftsmanship Jacob ! I've been repainting a house with lots of trim. I wash the walls prior to painting with TSP. Well I found if you dampen the tape after applying and before painting it activates the tape leaving much sharper paint lines. FYI. Building a strip kayak is on my bucket list.

By being careful with the glue I think you mean no intentional squeeze out. I've been applying glue carefully to the point that I have no squeeze out at all. I found that it holds the strips perfectly in alignment during the sanding process.

I just find that chickpea flour color and texture is so much Superior to Wood flour is easy and convenient to obtain and can fill finer cracks. Clean up is as easy as a wet sponge of course my glue is not a water resistant glue.

After raising the grain and just prior to sanding the wooden nibs that have been raised with water must be pulled off the surface or they will come off after staining and leave little white flects. This can best be done by hand only with a new piece of sandpaper just lightly touching the surface and pulling the fibers away without sanding any wood surface because sanding the surface again defeats the purpose of raising the grain.

I've never stained a boat however I plan too and I think after raising the grain with water I will pull any raised fibers away from the wood surface not with sandpaper but with a powerful tape. And just skip the sandpaper all together.

Sanding after raising the grain removes any nibs or miniscule high/ low spots; plus the process of applying the stain has enough friction between the rag and wood to "clean" off any remaining bits of material.

Raising the grain was pointless because you sanded one more time. Raised grain is best removed with a burlap rag this will not caused more fibers to be sanded.. raising wood grain with water is the last step before staining wood. It is never supposed to be done between different grits of sandpaper. I suggest you study the history of raising grain. Now your whole audience has been confused. The authority on wood finishing is Bob Flexner. It probably wouldn't hurt Nick Shade to do a little research too.
