Instruo - Tona (Saw-Core Analogue VCO with Linear FM & Wavefolder)

  • This is Tona from Instruo. It's a 12HP saw core analogue VCO with the usual square, saw/ramp, triangle and sine wave outputs but there's also an on board wave folder that takes the sine and uses a slider to create the fold level as well as a CV input and attenuator to modulate the folding. There's also a sync and linear FM input. It tracks well, sounds great, and works great with the Ts-L as a complimentary pair of oscillators.

    Ordered CSL, Tona and Traigh earlier this week from him. I told him he had you to thank for turning me on to them.

      Hi Jack that's excellent! Good to pass that on and make me look good :) haha Traigh looks great, not heard much of it though.

      no worries, gonna have a live stream with Jason/Instruo to chat about the range of oscillators. A few people want some comparisons.

    really nice video, between the Tona and mangrove which one would you pick ? i already got a spectrum and want to pair up with something with an extra flavour!

    Good vid. These do look nice, I like their panel designs a bunch. Do you ever take these patches that you demo on basic stuff like VCOs and try them on *other* VCOs, to compare? How differently are two saw-core VCOs (for example) going to behave/sound, given the same control inputs? (Once you adjust for things like expected levels of control signals etc)
    I have been watching with interest the thread on MW about reverse-engineering the Jupiter 8 VCO... seems like it had a slightly mangled saw wave. Maybe that was part of the magic

      Hi John, there's certainly some more subtle differences but it's not a massive thing. The big changes are all downstream, folders, filter, shapers etc. Often in how they respond to modulation they can differ but the raw tones aren't hugely different. I haven't done any massive experiments to compare them but maybe that's something interesting for a future video.
      The inaccuracies in the saw wave you mention is the CSAW in Braids from Mutable instruments. You can exploit the slight notch in the square and also PWM that point, which makes for an interesting sound.

    Man I can not decide if I want to get this one used or just get the Dixie 2 that everyone seems to recommend

    Hello, which are the richer sound on the basic waveforms at your ears? Ajh MINIMOD VCO or InstruoTONA?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  Před 5 lety +1

      Without having them side by side it's hard to say. They'll be similar, they're raw analogue waveforms. There's potentially also a slight level difference that will skew the results of any kind of listening tests. I'd simple go with which feature set speaks to you most. Wide coarse knob, or octave shifting, classic Moog waves (including the shark tooth) or classic waves plus the wave folder. Do you need linear and exponential FM?

  • @kennymester
    @kennymester Před 6 lety +4

    I feel like the Ts-L has more features and takes up less hp

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  Před 6 lety +10

      Hi Ken, it does. Half the size, sub and the wave folder has symmetry control that Tona doesn't and there's no dedicated square but the unique tri/square/pyramid wave with CV over. It's a triangle core where as Tona is a saw core so it's a different tone and also the folder on Tona has both manual control and a CV attenuator for the folding. It's also not as cramped. So it's not as simple as just saying it's bigger and simpler ... but yes it is bigger and simpler! :)

    dude how many different oscillators are they gonna release this year?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  Před 6 lety

      2 this year. Tona I think was last year, Troika was before that. Ts-L is new and Cs-:L is new. Going to having a live stream to take questions about the different designs and approaches a week on Sunday if you want to hear more about the Instruo oscillators.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  Před 5 lety

      Yes, but there's lots of ways to work with samplers and do various things. What would you like to do with the audio? Sample live on the fly? Sample playback? What sort of control over the samples do you want?

      Dane Flannery I believe you have to buy direct from Instruo currently. You can email them if you want one, they are very helpful.

      Hi Dane, yeah Luke is right sales are direct at the minute but they are looking to ramp up production and get these into shops soon.

      ah ok, hard to tell. I didn't think it was anything too serious. It does bring up the chance for some cable marketing though "Kermit and Miss Piggy cables" just throw some pink cables in and you're Muppets cable bag is good to go :)
