SWFL Eagles ~ CROW UPDATE On E14's Exam - Broken Pin Feather NOT Fish Hook! 1.15.20

  • CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife finished a brief exam on E14 and report there was no fishing line or fish hook on E14 or in the nest. The cause of the blood loss was a broken blood pin feather as I had suspected and reported on yesterday. Also egg#2 was fertilized and was partially developed.
Thank you CROW for your excellent work and for your rapid response to the information regarding E14's cause of death.

1.15.20 ~ Update on E14 passing from CROW Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife:
"This afternoon, a CROW staff member removed the remains from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam nest and brought them to the #CROWClinic. The unhatched egg was also removed from the nest. A radiograph was taken of the body which did not reveal any foreign objects, such as a fishing hook, in the body of E14 and the staff member that retrieved the remains did not find any fishing hooks or line in the nest. A brief examination was performed by veterinary staff in which they noted the entire left side to be covered in blood which appears to have come from a broken blood feather on the left wing. No other traumatic wounds were found to have occurred prior to the eaglet’s passing. The remains of E14 have been sent to the Southeast Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) at the University of Georgia for further evaluation and testing, including testing for rodenticides that may have contributed to the eaglet’s death. It will take some time before we receive the results, but we will be sure to share them once they are available. For those curious about the unhatched egg, we were able to determine that it was fertilized and had developed partially, but were unable to determine why it did not hatch."

@@claudiacouch7988 Hello Claudia - normally a veterinarian would pull out the damaged pin feather and apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If they are not removed, they run the risk of continuing to bleed like we saw here with E14.

Thank you so much Lady Hawk. We are so appreciative of CROW and all their diligent work in examination of E14. It helps give us closure knowing what happened. It has been a sad series of events, also good to know that egg #2 was fertilized. These unfortunate events in life are hard to take, but knowing how much this eaglet was loved by us all, helps a great deal. Thank you CROW for all that you do for us. Thanks Lady Hawk, we so appreciate all that you do us as well. Rest in Peace little one! We love you!

It seems that the eaglet didn't even have to be removed from the next and could have been treated right there if CRAW cared to do their job. I've had parrots for almost 30yrs. I have pulled many blood (pin) feathers during these years. I had to pull two from the tail of one of my parrots just the other day (she's a feather biter, which is similar to nail biter in humans). The blood loss from a feather comes in the form of quick drops of blood. Best way to stop it is to pull the whole feather from its shaft (with forceps).
While reviewing E14's video from yesterday, the constant drip of blood was a typical sign of a blood feather. The feather must have broken near the shaft where the blood supply is heavier.
The SWFL Eagles have only been in my life since E9. To this day, a beautiful picture of Harriet standing proudly behind E9 is my screen saver on my two screens at my computer. The life of E9 at this nest was like an entire college course for me with regards to the Bald Eagle. I came in after the loss of Ozzie (and glad I did). Harriet and M15 showed me what GREAT eagle parents do to raise their young. E9 showed me how fast an eaglet grows and learns the tools to leave home FOREVER in just a few months. The knowledge that this nest has given me (being a bird person of many years) is priceless. I've now expanded my viewing of different nests and different types of birds that reach to other countries. Amazing what's out there and how blessed we are to be able to see it all.
My heart goes out to all that feel the loss of E14, as I. She was a strong eaglet that came out ready from day one. I loved how she would finish eating and assume her resting position and wait for Harriet to brood as if to say "come on, I'm done, I need my rest now, chop chop, let's go". We were blessed to have had her for the time we did and the stories we'll be able to tell of her.
Thank you Lady Hawk for always expanding our knowledge so generously. Your time is of true value to us and so appreciated.🙏
Thank you SWFEC and the entire Dick Pritchett Real Estate family for giving us the opportunity to view this beautiful nest and all its splendor.🙏
My condolences to Harriet and M15, for they will mourn the loss of their healthy eaglet.❤️🦅❤️🦅❤️

I have visited there because I live a few miles from the nest. It breaks my heart to see this happen. Little E14 was so full of life. Picking up things in the nest , so young full of spunk. So cute as he wobbled trying to sit up. This morning I was shocked that E14 had succumbed . It has been a happy and sad time. I cried with the passing of Ozzie. The little ones that were lost. It is a blessing and also so sad. Life has peaks and valleys. I have gotten choked up by all the passings just thinking about them , especially now when we have all lost another beautiful one. Thank you to the Pritchett family and Lady Hawk . God's speed.
