Stunning photography and some invaluable advice thanks Julian.
Thanks Rob!
Great video. Thanks for showing us these locations and for your great photos.
Thanks Del. I'll be producing more videos like this so stay tuned! :-)
My mothers family is from Torquay. I have never been to visit so when I do this video will be helpful in planning some photo locations! Thanks!
Hey Chris, the local area is full of great locations, so don't forget that camera if you visit! :-)
Julian, what a great inspirational video. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I have the areas marked up for a visit. I'm now a subscriber.
Thanks Jawad, I really appreciate you watching and for leaving a positive comment. Hopefully you'll get to visit these locations soon. Did you see my video on using a custom Google Map to record locations like this? I'm also currently working on more videos like this so stay tuned for more. :-)
Thanks for this. Very helpful as we going to Devon for some camping in August.
Cheers Alain! :-) Hopefully the weather will remain nice for your camping next month. Not too nice of course... you want a wee bit of drama for your photography. :-)
Hi Julian those five locations looked brilliant i think Start Point at the end was my fav . The shots you got looked special and the drone footage looking from out at sea back towards the lighthouse was brilliant.
Nice to see another landscape channel thats just as good as the best out there keep them coming and thanks for sharing.
Cheers Jeff, thanks for watching and for leaving such a positive comment. I'm constantly drawn to Start Point and even after all this time I'm discovering new ways to shoot it - www.julianbaird.me/blog/2017/2/24/storms-sunset-and-start-point Now that the weather is gradually improving I'll be producing more videos and including more drone footage, so stay tuned!
Wonderful video Julian with some beautiful locations. I can see why they made it to your top 5. This is very helpful as I am currently planning a trip to the UK in next few months, and I’ll be exploring the south coast for some landscape photography opportunities (as well as some vlogging). Despite the light, your image of Start Point was fantastic, loved that dramatic coastline. Your description of each place, how you approach capturing its beauty, along with directions to get there was clear and helpful. I hope to visit some of these myself. Thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks for watching and leaving a positive comment Andrew. I really appreciate it! I've got more videos like this in the making so stay tuned. :-)
Thanks for sharing Julian. Took camera and children to Venford Falls this morning. Great location.
No worries Simon, glad you found my video and the location! Venford Falls is at its best at the moment....was the dead sheep still there though? Fortunately it was just down stream enough not to get in the way of photos.
Thank you for this video i live in Devon (Plymouth) but didn't think to go to Dawlish Warren and i have been many times without my camera the light wasn't great but managed a few reasonable long exposures.
It's a great location and one not to be missed. It tends to work best as a sunrise location though. The sun comes up from a good angle, there isn't that many people about and the car park is free! Given the right conditions it would definitely be worth a morning raid from Plymouth. Thanks for watching. :-)
As someone who lives in Somerset it’s great to see some local spots to visit. Really enjoyed the video.
Thanks Elliston, great to hear you enjoyed the video! Check out this playlist of other local locations I have visited: czcams.com/play/PLJU6FMi6Tvo_9b-W545mYaWhPd-aznV-8.html :-)
Brilliant work here I really enjoyed watching your Vlogging and amazing photography.
Thanks. Rob.
Thanks for watching and leaving such a positive comment Robert. Cheers :-)
Awesome locations and images, takes me back to my childhood, and I'm starting to get really home sick...
I wouldn't get too home sick.... it's very grey, overcast and a bit wet today! lol
Another video well worth watching, enjoyed it!
Hey Roger, sorry didn't see your comment there! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for pointing me to this video Julian; excellent as usual. I've bookmarked it as it will be very useful for a forthcoming trip to Dartmoor later this year. Cheers :)
No worries Les :-) There are so many places to photograph on Dartmoor and the wider Devon. You're spoilt for choice!
Just to say thanks again Julian; got some nice shots of Vendford falls which I'd never have found without your directions. I did manage to slide down the hill several times on my behind though! Got a nice sunset at Dawlish Warrent beach too 😊 Cheers, Les
Nice one Les. Yes, that descent, and ascent actually can be a little slippy! Glad you got shots from both locations. :-)
Excellent images Julian, and a great video!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Adam. I really appreciate it. Stay subscribed as I'll be posting up a similar style video in the near future. :-)
Thanks for the video. You definitely inspire me to get out more , the reason why is my bread and butter job is engineering Monday to Thursday so I try to put Friday aside for photography and the weekends for my wife , family and friends, thanks again....
Glad you liked it David. I've got a full time job and family as well, so know all to well about time constraints. It is one of the good things about landscape photography though... most of it can be done during the less sociable hours of the day. :-)
Excellent Julian! 👌🏻 Your videos are inspiring.
Thanks Jamie, that's awesome of you to say! :-)
Hi Julian. Found your visit to Start Point at the end of your #5 favs! Think I probably stood in the exact same spot on the rocks above the lighthouse and had the same luck with the dawn light as I had a thick band of cloud on the horizon. It's a great spot and looking at your other photos of it, if anyone is reading this. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. I travelled over from Hope Cove in the dark so the small lanes are an experience. Definitely recommend using a SatNav!!! Good work with the videos Julian. Have subbed and starting to work back through your vids!
Thanks for watching, liking, commenting and subscribing!! I really appreciate it. Yeah, Start Point is a fantastic location. Even thought I've been there a number of times I'm still finding new compositions and places to shoot from there - check out my blog at julianbaird.me to see the last location I shot from at Start Point. The only problem I've found with SatNav is that it can take you down some of the narrowest lanes rather than the slightly wider roads. I think it gets to a point where it considers all the lanes the same size and sends you down the shortest one, which we both know isn't always the quickest!
Nice video julian, its given me some great loations for august while im staying at harford bridge on dartmoor.
Hey Simon, thanks for watching and the feedback. If you've not shot Dartmoor before you'll be in for a treat. I can also recommend this book by local ProTog Adam Burton - www.amazon.co.uk/Photographing-Cornwall-Devon-Including-Dartmoor/dp/0992905133
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out. I stayed on dartmoor last year but the weather wasn't great hence I've booked another week. Brentor had scaffolding on it so hoping to get some nice shots this year. www.simonnicholsonphotography.com
You are good 😊 really enjoying your videos. I would love to live near the sea 🌊. Got the Peak District on my doorstep.
Thanks! That's cool of you to say. I am very lucky where I live with Dartmoor, Exmoor and the South West Coast Path all on my doorstep. Must get around to photographing the Peak District. Just picked up a book on the area and it looks awesome. :-)
Just been to Vennford Falls and the resivour - got some awesome images !
Hi Ollie, thanks great to hear. It's a wonderful location! :-)
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography Could I email them to you? It would be great to hear your thoughts on them?
Thanks 👍
Sure, send a couple over and I'll take a look when I can.
great video
Thanks! (Sorry I missed your comment!)
Excellent video Julian. Some great locations you have provided. I could add Great Staple Tor and Wistmans Wood to those. I spent a lovely 2 or 3 hours grabbing images of the gnarled trees at Wistmans. Magical place.
I would like to say am a bit concerned that your gimbal on the drone is a bit 'off' which is very noticable on the videos.
Thanks Steve. Great Staple Tor is a fantastic location in the right conditions, as is Wistman's. This video is nearly 6 years old but hopefully my production quality has improved since then. ;-)
Hello and thanks for such a wonderfully relaxed and informative video. Chanced upon you whilst browsing CZcams for Nikon D850 reviews (I wish!), and am now enjoying viewing all your CZcams videos. I live in East Devon and am wondering if you do group location tutorials... I certainly hope so. Many thanks again for such great videos.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Great to hear from a local! Also, very happy to hear you are enjoying my videos. I shoot a lot in the South West so hopefully you'll spot a few local sights. I'm not doing tutorials at this point in time, but stay tuned as this may change in the future. Thanks again for your support! :-)
great video, keep it up
Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing the video, I really like the picture shot at Forward point. Not sure exactly where it is though!!
thanks Ian - hopefully this pin on Google Maps will help you. goo.gl/maps/RZBXHe5Xk682
Many Thanks, I get it now.
Cool. Park at the Brownstone NT car park. You'll need 15 to 20 mins for the walk, longer if you stop to shoot Daymark Tower. :-)
Thanks Emma! Venford Falls is a cracking location and a few people that have seen this video have told me they've now been there. :-)
Hi Julian, great vlog and thanks for listing some locations. I'm going on holiday to North Devon in a few weeks (near Hartland Point) can you recommend any locations near there to shoot? I'm only going to get about half a day so wouldn't be able to travel too far from that area. Thanks in advance.
Hey Robert, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. In terms of locations, well there are plenty and it depends on what you like shooting. There is Clovelly Harbour, Black Church Rock, Hartland Quay, Welcombe Mouth Bay to name a few. My recommendation would be to pick up this book: www.amazon.co.uk/Photographing-Cornwall-Devon-Including-Dartmoor/dp/0992905133/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497273781&sr=8-1&keywords=cornwall+and+devon+photography It's packed full of information on locations, how to get there, best times etc. I own it and it's a great resource.
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography, Thanks Julian for the suggestions and the link to the book. I will look into getting hold of a copy. Fingers crossed the weather plays in my favour! By the way forgot to say that the drone footage was really well done in the vlog and adds so much more to the whole viewing. Great work.
Thanks again Robert. I try to use the drone on each location, but it's not always legal or permissible, so I do have be a responsible drone owner. Sometimes you don't find out until after the fact, but I do my best!
Hey Julian, im coming down to Devon in the summer for a few days staying near Hartland any recommendations of amazing places to shoot and film with the drone ?
Hey Roger, thanks for watching and commenting. I haven't shot much of North Devon (something I will have to sort out in 2017), but I have shot The Valley of the Rocks a couple of times (near Lynton). It's a spectacular place to to visit even if you aren't going to take photographs there. There is also Watersmeet near there which is nice for woodland river shots. If you want lots of inspiration I can highly recommend Adam Burton's "Photographing Cornwall and Devon". It's got lots of locations and is written for the photographer - www.amazon.co.uk/Photographing-Cornwall-Devon-Including-Dartmoor/dp/0992905133/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486712253&sr=8-1&keywords=photographing+cornwall+and+devon+including+dartmoor+and+exmoor
jbairdexp fab thanks for the info, watersmeet looks cool, will defo check out the link.
Are you using a 70-200mm lenses? What 70-200mm lens you can recommend for my D850? I whose looking Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 G2 lenses. I see the review for this lenses and everyone have a good result from this lens. It is Nikon's lens worth 2800$?
Yes, I have the previous generation Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 but I have yet to test it on the D850. I doubt there will be any issues, or unlikely be any issues for the type of photography that I do. I've not used the Tamron equivalent, but I've heard both the Tamron and the Sigma 70-200's are very good. Check out this video from another photographer that I follow - he asks the very question you are asking: czcams.com/video/a0Pb37PGa2E/video.html
Hi Julian, I was looking to shoot Froward point this weekend, on a scale of 1-10 whats the terrain like for access to get a decent shot? you make it look like a stroll in the park :)
Hey Ian, the terrain under foot is generally ok. It's a really good surface from the car park down the lookout building. After that it's just a path, but a well trodden path. It is however steep after Daymark tower. So, be aware that getting back is going to be a bit tougher than getting there. Overall I would give it 7/10 in terms of difficulty, just because of the steep walk back out. Also, and this should go without saying. you need to very careful when at the edge of coast. There are some cliffs and sharp drops, so you need to be aware of your surroundings. It's not dangerous, unless the weather is very poor or windy, or you aren't careful.
Cheers, I'll have to sleep on that one. The reason I was asking is because I went down to Durdle door a couple of weeks ago for sunrise and walked down to the beach, the terrain was fine but the walk back nearly killed me.
Ian Cassanova yeah if you found Durdle Door hard going this one won't be any easier.
I was actually down at Venford Fall over the Easter weekend but I took the wrong turning walking down to it (I can see were I went wrong though lol) So i didn't get to actually shoot it but I did enjoy the exercise, as I like a challenge even though I wasn't set up for going there anyway especially with no Polariser at hand. I actually drove across the reservoir by accident on my way out from visiting Coombestone Tor & saw the car park on my left & hit the brakes and pulled in. Anyway now I know!!
The first time I visited Venford I totally missed the falls. I thought it would be easy to find and I would just stumble across it! Hope you find it next time. :-)
