Dartmoor Landscape Photography - Exploring Venford Falls

- I do some hiking and landscape photography in Devon on Dartmoor, and try to find an iconic yet elusive location - Venford Falls. Cold and rainy, the winter weather in Dartmoor National Park was bleak and the landscape so harsh, but provided perfect conditions to photograph rocks, trees and water. Venford Falls was so gloomy and dark, I didn’t need an ND filter!
Do you do landscape photography on Dartmoor? If so, I'd love to hear your favourite photography locations.

Wow Simon, really great video! Really beautiful location. Thanks for letting us tag along with you! Subbed!
Hey, thanks Thomas, an honour to have you drop by Sir!
Nice one Simon...Venford Falls and the brook down to the river are some of my favourite locations. And you are very right about wellies....well, at least for that location anyway. 👍
Thanks Julian. Hope to bump into you on the moor one day!
I'm with you on the Wellies. We call them muck boots here but they are the best all around for photography around rivers, waterfalls, etc. I almost always end up standing in the river.
Not a bad name, considering there is a lot of muck on the moors, lol 😬 Thanks for watching!
Brilliant mate nice to see you again. To be honest I love them shots from the second time back. Great exposure and the way you got the greens to pop. Very nicely set up. #wellies all the way
Cheers Paul, yeah, considering the rainy cold weather, the final shots weren't too bad. Need to go back again and try to better though. Snow cover would be nice.
I walked up and down that valley for hours and couldn't find the waterfall!! So magical, it disappeared!! lol
Ah, yes, it is tricky to find! You have to walk down to the river and follow it, to find the falls.
Despite terrible weather, I found a great new location on Dartmoor to photograph! Have you visited Venford Falls?
I have to say epic!!! The best weather for waterfall without to much fuzzing wit ND filters. Nice cinematic bits and pieces with nice fitting music. The greens are just spectacular very much missed in my area of USA, nice work and keep them coming, for sure worth to revisit this great place, even conditions didn't work you you managed great pictures, V!
As always, thanks for watching Verdon 😀
Great video! I'm from Plymouth so will definitely be going here in the next couple weeks, long exposure is my favourite type of photography! 😊
You won't regret it, amazing place!
Beautiful pictures!!! We‘ve planned to visit Dartmoor next year by mid / end of April. Can’t wait for this adventure. Thank you for sharing your photos on the most beautiful country. Greetings from Switzerland Claudia
Dartmoor is certainly a great adventure, have fun!
very good episode Simon, the light on the last image is superb.. bravo buddy
Thanks Darren!
I'm not familiar with the area but it looks quite promising. Shame about the weather but good on you for making a return visit. I'm a sucker for the mossy trees and rocks myself. If I get a chance to visit I'll heed your advice about the Wellies. Cheers, Jeff
Thanks Jeff, yes, a great area for photography and not very well known.
I enjoyed the video Simon. The waterfall photos were very beautiful. Thank you for sharing. (I enjoyed your opening to the video and your humor.)
Thanks for commenting, appreciate that :-) It's a stunning location, I just got unlucky with poor weather. Worth a revisit though, and highly recommend it!
A very real episode, love it Simon, really took me on a journey, with twists and turns and resolve at the end. The final shot! Brilliant processing and love the composition. You always make the best of the conditions and the B roll as always first class 👌 speak soon my friend 😊👍
Thanks Mali. I wasn't as happy with this video as others, but I guess we have to make the most of what we have to work with 😕 Look forward to chatting soon 😀
Great waterfalls compositions! I'd love to explore Venford Falls.
Thanks. It's worth exploring further down the brook, beyond the falls. Lots to shoot!
Great video Simon, well explained..and cool little intro 😉 beautiful little river, its a shame about the falls not living up to your expectations...even though from your photos it looks like you undersold it 😊
Thanks Ben! I think it was the weather that caused my disappointment.
Really enjoyed it simon, thought the last shot, the lower down one was really good, the composition worked really well especially with the light coming over the top. 👍 EPIC 😂
Thanks Ian! Yup, got lucky with the last shot, considering the weather was so bad and mostly raining 😬
Loved the video Simon and the compositions were great, wish you all the best for 2019!
Cheers Steve, all the best to you too! 🍻
Great production work as always Simon. Great to see the 40mm. I think the benefits of a prime is it really helps you work on composition. Enjoyed both of the first images a lot for this reason. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Thanks for watching Diego!
Great video Simon! Love hearing your thoughts on the photographs you take!
Thanks for watching Cameron!
wow! I watched your video yesterday before I visited today - have to say man, the tip on the Wellies!!!! Genius!! Was a life saver - thanks so much
hey, so glad that tip helped! Thanks for watching 🙂
@@SimonBurnCreative It was fun .. as you say very limited scope for composition and the water flow was intense!
@@plebism Yes, it's one of those places that is nice to explore, regardless of getting any photos 🙂
Nice video Simon, must give Dartmoor another go probably in the Spring when the ground is a bit drier.
Thanks Kevin. Most of Dartmoor seems to be wet and muddy all year round unfortunately, but definitely worth exploring. heading up to some of the higher Tors is the bet to avoid a lot of water and mud.
Nice video mate, those waterfall shots were pretty good!
Thanks John, yeah, can't complain, the weather was really bad, with lots of rain, so not too bad considering.
That bridge looks familar :-) , I was there last week. Wonderful location, I havent got to the falls yet possibly in next couple of weeks.😀
I watched your video and it made me realise i should have spent more time there. Venford Falls and area is great, I really need to return in better conditions. Look forward to see what you come up with on your visit!
Enjoyed this one Simon cheers buddy 👍
Cheers Mark!
I like the way that you have shown your settings etc as graphics on screen. 😊
Thanks. Thought it best, I'm talking too much as it is :-)
I enjoyed it, always good to see how other People present their shows. Keep up the great content 😊👍
Nice little video Simon. The shot looked good. If you ever venture to South Wales and need to scout some falls let me know
Thanks for watching Alan, I will absolutely give you a shout when venturing into south Wales, thanks!
Looked a great location despite the miserable weather. Definitely worth coming back to capture those waterfall images, they were excellent! Liked your camera settings graphics at the bottom of the screen - did you create those in PP? Also need to learn how to add insta and FB logos too....so much to learn!
Thanks Jamie. I think the potential for photography isn't so much the falls, but the rest of the river. Definitely going back. Re: settings and all the graphics, all done in PP. Just created a file with transparent background, and saved as PNG. Then dropped into the top layer of the timeline in Premiere.
Love your vids!
Thanks, really glad to hear this 😀
Nice job mate....shame you didn’t like venford. I did get the classic shot but preferred a closer shot I took just to get something different. Sound advice about the wellies lol 😂
I think it was because the weather was so bad, rainy, wet, windy and cold. The little brook that runs down to the river Dart is really lovely though, will be going back at some point.
Candy floss waterfalls,yuk!!
Yuk? I was thinking that about some of your paintings a while back, but couldn't bring myself to be so rude and ill-mannered to say anything.
Cool video
Thanks!
Nice work Simon. I’ve got a couple of videos from this location.
Thanks Christian, I do recall watching some of your videos a while back 👍
Cheers Christian. You've got some great vids from Dartmoor, i've watched a few!
@@SimonBurnCreative Thanks very much Simon.
Omg, was at holsworthy bridge last week.
Worth a trip slightly further south then 😀
Simon Burn definitely. I’m in Plymouth, so on the day I went I went through cloud, then heavy mist through princetown and finally bright weather at holsworthy. Only on Dartmoor.
This may sound crazy, but a couple of months ago I was convinced that you passed me. I was lost, exhausted, looking for the Neolithic stone circle site just past down tor. The person said “crowded up here today, unusual to see anyone else “.... Could be wrong though, probably just looked like you.
@@DivorcedFL You know, it's possible, I was up there a couple of months ago and do recall saying something like that to someone. If it was me, I think it was a day when the weather wasn't so nice? Although I recall it being near Wistman's Wood now I think of it, or near Foggintor.
Simon Burn it definitely was bad weather. It could well have been over towards fogintor because I’d seriously got lost. Around that area if it’s misty it gets confusing which Tor you’re actually near as they all look closer than they actually are. I remember thinking “I’ll follow him, he looks like he knows where he’s going. 10 minutes later I’d lost sight. I did eventually find it and got some great moody images.
@@DivorcedFL Lol, could well have been me then, I go out in all weather!
Venford Falls more candy floss…….!!!
I've no idea what candy floss means, but here's an idea... don't watch anymore of my videos with waterfalls being featured! 👍🙂
