If i remember correctly... animals wont spawn at night as animals in the dark for enough time automatically despawn to prevent animals from running into caves and causing tons of lag. So im pretty sure you need to adventure for animals during the day and need to stop and hang out every now and then to allow animals to spawn in loaded chunks around you.
That makes a lot of sense given the little spawn in that happened after digging the pit. I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I'm out in search of specific animals!
@@Solstin also biomes play a role too, so mountainous areas aren't the area for pigs but rather are the area for goats. It is hard to figure out biome changes with VS, not nearly as distinguished as MCs biomes.
Very true, and even beyond the biome itself there are temperature, elevation, and rainfall factors for certain animals iirc
@@Solstin dang man, I never thought about temp and rainfall... elevation is kind of a no brainer as it goes hand in hand with goats and mountians so that makes total sense, but I never thought about Temps and rainfall as being factors. That sure does change some thing when hunting for X animal.

After such a struggle for pigs, Mrs. Cluck the head cook of Eisenholm reporting for duty at the end was a nice surprise. Hopefully the goat/sheep hunt will go more smoothly when it happens.
I really need to sort out some housing for my animals, and I'm looking forward to seeing the henhouse. I like how your builds are both functional and pretty, and they always give me ideas.
Haha yeah, it felt like all of the animals were waiting for me to start heading home to call it a day before they all started crawling out of the woodwork!

The walls of the barn are very nice with the support beams and I like the idea you had to combine your different livestock in the same large barn. I cannot wait to see it on work!

Glad you like the exterior design! I've kept the wall without the stone trim flat so I can stack firewood and peat up next to it.
Also the more I've been thinking of the side for sheep and goats, the more I'm wondering if having both for milk production might be redundant.
@@Solstin my original project is the consequence of an exchange of ideas with MegaGran. The problem is that once the baby animals reach generation 10 they stop running away from the player and it starts to be difficult to separate the generations. For this reason I thought of using the female of the animal to naturally attract puppies to a specific area, taking advantage of the Vintage Story mechanics: female follows male, puppies follow female. To bring them back to the beginning I thought to use the troughs with food.
At Tin Peaks I happen to have found a group of sheep and goats, so I just dug a ditch, placed some food and captured them all (without forging rings). I still have to think if I'll keep all of them. In any case it's nice to have also some of the new species in the barn 😀
It's a brilliant design! The closest thing a friend and I could come up with was similar to a Valheim wolf breeding box where the pups immediately fall out of the 1x1 holding pen. The main issue we had was getting the new generation back up top due to the overly-engineered design we had. Your separator works 1000x better lol

I might just have to keep a house chicken from now on, probably replacing it once the chickens get to a generation where they don't run away from me anymore! Time to bring the house chicken some lost mittens, dryer lint, and bits of string, and feed it the crumbs from peanut butter on toast.
As a person with house chickens, I can confirm they are just as effective crumb disposal as dog :3 can learn tricks too! Plus! They can help control the kinds of crawly pests that tend to be attracted to kitchens

@Solstin ah yes, let me tell you, there's nothing my girls love more than a nice juicy spider before a nap under the table xD they also know to idle around the kitchen when someone is in there in hopes of treats and snack

On the "neighbors property" on the way home meets a chicken and casually walks it home like a good little doggo...
Honestly, that's the best part about chickens. Just keep yourself at the right angle and you can get them to go anywhere!
@@Solstin sounds a lot like "driving" the chickens... hold the wheel just right and it goes where you want to go lol!
if the barn has extra head height you could add some rafters and or a hay loft to fill it out!
Even after bringing it down to the height I initially wanted, I think there'll be enough room for a hay loft up top! I was planning on putting an awning over the front of the building for a covered outdoor storage area for fuel, hay, and have a little woodcutting stump, but I like the idea of keeping the hay up top inside.

I'm in awe of some of the amazing builds I've seen over the years, both in the other block game and more recently Vintage Story, and I'm just glad that some of the design philosophy I've picked up along the way can pass that inspiration on to others.

I think many stables have interior fences to hold the animals in the right spot inside the barn.

I've got another stable floor plan for the far-off future when we're at the 10th generation of domesticated pigs, and interior fences will be key to that one. :)
You'd be surpirsed, I had a sow and boar with two piglets running around.... right next to three wolves and a bear, who I tried to fend off to capture the piglets XD

@@Solstin Protecting them, yes, but then I was warned of a temporal storm so I had to head home [I was a bit aways] and forgot to mark where they were, so now I'm doing what your doing. fenced in some wilds a bit away and got the sow preggy XD.
I love the fact something like this exists in vanilla VS. we need more of this.
More ways to semi-automate or at least designs to manipulate game mechanics adds a whole new dimension to gameplay!
I wouldn't necessarily want full automation like in TOBG, but sciencing out creative solutions scratches a particular itch for me.
@@Solstin yep, its the reason i still go back to MC after all these years. i used to play heavy modded and it just lost its fun, kinda for the reason you speak of. now with all the stuff you can get to work in vanilla is really fun, and alot of work most times. I just recently bought VS after debating for quite awhile seems the new patches are getting better and better. And your Lets play was a big factor in my getting it. Im using your seed after hunting relentless for a good one with only a few QoL mods. Keep it up man your making quality content.

I thought you could only trap chickens in the baskets. This changes everything...
As far as I know, chickens and rabbits are the only ones where you can trap them while fully grown (maybe raccoons?) but it is a massive benefit to be able to abscond with baby animals when they aren't close to your base!
You can trap chickens, piglets, and lambs. Although, the 24-hour rule applies to them all, you could probably just dig another hole, let them "breathe" and trap them again to restart the timer if you can't find anything near home.

I started watching again when David Tennant came back as the 10th now 14th Doctor to cover for the 15th Doctor. And Donna came back too! I suppose I should go back and watch the 12th and 13th Doctors because I lost interest when Matt Smith left. No shade to Capaldi and the lady Doctor, I dropped Hulu because it got too pricey and overflowed with ads that you had to pay extra to stop seeing said ads. Extortion, anybody? Have you seen Good Omens 2? It’s chocked full of Who Easter eggs.

Great episode! Too bad you only got the one piglet and one chicken, but you'll get there!! One suggestion--when you're doing your timelapses / long periods of not talking, I can only hear the background music if I crank the volume all the way up. I initially thought you had forgotten to add it at all. You might consider turning up the BGM in general, since it's also inaudible at other times, just not as noticeable due to your voice covering for it!
Ah, thanks for the heads up on that! I'm always editing with headphones and the music seems pretty loud so I've been turning it down to not overpower the commentary, but if it's coming in too soft I'll try having it a little louder in the next episode and see how it sounds!
@@Solstin I do the same, and have had the same issue--sometimes. I previously had one or two people tell me the background music was too much, but it was already 20dB below my talking, which is actually quieter than "standard" background music... >.>
@@Kurazarrh I have my BGM track set to -32dB and then manually adjust for all of those portions of VS songs that get suddenly much louder or quieter. I guess there's a happy middle between -20dB and -32dB? (">_>)
Seeing as you have some grand plans for some super dope builds, might i recommend you employ the same tactic you would with "the other block game" and avoid if at all possible going any further than 1000 ish blocks away from your area in a least 2 major directions to leave ungenerated terrain to explore in future updates which will likely happen multiple times over the lifetime of a large project. It would be no fun to have to travel for days and days and days just to find some new content when some dope update drops.
Or i suppose if the tech exists to "prune chunks" aka defaulting explored areas with nothing of interest back to "ungenerated" so new content can be generated upon exploration of the area again.
Luckily there are ways to reset chunks, and typically when new content is introduced, like when the Resonance Archive was added, there are commands that can be used to generate that new content into the world!
For anything that just needs newly generated chunks, translocators are fantastic for that! We'll be able to play around with a couple of them once we manage to get some temporal gears :)

Yeah, I wasn't expecting such a long trip in search of pigs, but on the bright side it'll be easier when looking for goats since there are so many different types that could spawn!

Ok, I went on a bit of a search and could NOT find Pudu deer barks. They are very sneaky! It looks like the VS team used Muntjac barks instead. While the muntjac is also a small deer, it is native to south asia while the pudu is native to south america!
Interesting! I don't know how to identify different deer barks, so it's always fun to learn something new. :)
I was looking at your back log and noticed the content is this series is pretty unique compared to your other content, and you don't do long series very often. I love this series and I hope it goes on a long time, but I don't know if that's what your wanting to do. Do you intend to do more content with this game, or this genre? I am very much interested in more content like this.
Those older videos are from a number of years ago when I was jumping around a lot between games, quite a far cry from how I tend to play games now.
I'll be sticking with Vintage Story for quite some time, especially with all of the grand designs I have in mind for building out the town! I've got several ideas for related content that I'll eventually get to, such as tutorials, build guides, etc.

@@Solstin Oh thats exciting! I know many let's players that just focus on what's popular at the moment and move on. Understandable, but not the ones I watch.
Some CZcamsrs have done what they could with building a village and getting to the highest tier of technology, but because the content has slowly, but steadily grown, they continue to return to the game on a fairly regular basis for all the new content. It's a pretty huge jump if you last played in the 1.15.x version. I'm pretty sure once 1.20.x has been stabilized, we'll see a lot of "returners".

Mr Sol sir theres a mod called something to the effect of "Barrel cooling" and it lets you fill a barrel with water and then put the work item in the slot to cool it off and I love using it for the sake of having a quenching barrel in my forges
I've got a couple designs for a chiseled quenching barrel (using the same principals as the kitchen sink) but if that doesn't end up looking good when I eventually get to making a proper workshop, then that mod is my 2nd choice for sure!
Most quenching I've seen has been done in a long "trough" like object, either at knee height or in the floor, so they can cover it and walk over it when not needed. Where they are could also depend upon if they're using water or oil to quench, too.

There's a command you can put in chat to change it to the full color map! It's "/worldconfigcreate bool colorAccurateWorldmap true"
Might have to save and quit before it'll take effect, but your map should start updating in color after that!
