  • A GZ curve or the curve of statical stability describes various details in respect of the stability wise health of a ship. A master must be provided the information in the form of GZ curve and relevant criteria for him to make an accurate assessment of ship's stability. In this video, certain special features about the GZ curve are explained.
    Capt.S.S.Chaudhari is an Indian Merchant Navy Captain with 45 years of experience under his belt including 29 years of teaching and training professionals. He is from ‘1978-79’, T.S. Rajendra batch. He commanded ships from 1990 to 1994, whereafter he said quits to sailing and started his teaching tenure in 1994, at L.B.S College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research. In 1999, he completed Bachelor of General Law from Mumbai University.
    In LBS, he was connected with most areas of maritime teaching at various levels up to Extra Masters. For several years, he had been in the panel of examinations by MMD, of various competency levels. He has also been a faculty and examiner of the Extra Master’s course since 2006. He was also associated with the examination of B.Sc Nautical Sciences, (Mumbai University). He was Chief Editor of a technical magazine ‘Horizon Ahead’ for over 5 years. He has been the principal of M.M.T.I. Dehradun, from 2014 till 2019.
    During the 29 years of teaching, he has written several books. Chartwork, Celestial Navigation, Ship Stability, Cargowork, Navaids, Advanced Shipboard Management, Ship Construction (Vol I & Vol II), Legal Knowledge for first mate are to name a few. Capt. Chaudhari believes in sharing his knowledge with the fraternity.

    It was a very good explanation capt. Just wanted to know why 57.3 degress is taken as standard as if we take any other for the purpose of proving CD=GM it will give same result as it gets cancelled out. As far as i researched only got and idea that 1 radian= 57.3 degrees so we take that value for finding GM.

      On a GZ Curve, if we assume the ordinate at 57.3 degrees to be x, then by the principle of similar triangle x/57.3 degrees = GZ / theeta in degrees. (theeta is a small angle). Therefore, x= GZ x 57.3 / theeta. But, RHS = GM, because for small angles GZ = GM x theeta in radians.
