  • The Prius has been the mainstay of the hybrid vehicle market since it was first introduced in Canada in 2000. We spend a week in the latest fourth generation version of this car to see if it's still a relevant choice two decades later.

I’m glad you mentioned the Prius Prime at the end of this review; we like ours (2017)! Between its 30ish-mile EV-mode battery, and Austin, Texas being a pretty EV-friendly town, the car has nearly 20Kmiles on it, but the engine only has about 1500 miles on it!
Even better, Austin Energy has a $50/year “all you can charge buffet” around town - about $1/week. Altogether, I’m spending about a $1.10/week, which, of it were gas would only get me to work on Monday and halfway back home, rather than power me all week! And that’s gas at 55MPG!
The real economy of the Prius Prime, I’ve decided, is that, barely putting any miles on the engine, I can probably keep this car going for well over 300K miles! Laying out >$30K for a car once every 20 years, instead of once every 12 years, represents serious savings!
There are some drawbacks though: You do lose a bit of trunk space, along with the middle rear seat and the spare tire. However, in my view at least, the Prius Prime looks a lot better, the big nav screen is nice, the battery in the rear and the suspension tweaks to support it give it a slightly smoother ride. In hybrid mode, it even gets slight better mileage than the regular Prius.
Most importantly of all, the Prime is the first Prius where EV mode really works! You really do get 25-30 miles of real, engine-completely-off EV-only driving, and with fair torque too, especially low-end. The main reason is that they added a sprag clutch to that prevents the engine from turning backwards, and even more importantly, gives the second of the two motor-generators something to torque against, so that both motors can drive the vehicle. On all previous Prius models, only one of the two can, making EV mode pretty anemic.
In short, definitely give the Prius Prime serious consideration!

Disappointing choice of nickel metal hydride battery in base trim. I agree wholeheartedly that plug in hybrids are often a better choice. One thing that would have been nice to see is some explanation of cost per mile for electricity vs gas, as that's another important advantage to PHEVs over HEVs.

I owned a gen 3 trim level 3 and now own a gen 4 trim level 4. I think the gen 4 is miles ahead of the gen 3 in just about every area, looks, ride comfort, interior materials quality, and best of all gas mileage. I was getting 45-48 with gen 3 and with gen 4 I'm getting 50-55 on same roads. And that's with cheap Goodyear Viva Walmart tires. I will agree with the seat heater buttons. Seems like an after thought.

We love our 2016 RAV4 Hybrid I-AWD. It came in less than $30,000 US. It has higher ground clearance, turn signal light indicators on the mirrors, electronic all wheel drive, sunroof, a more powerful engine 2.5L, nicer looking aluminum rims, and more. The only sacrifice is lower mileage. We average 35mpg. We are glad that we didn't get the Prius.

Great review Paul! The exterior of the 2019 is supposed to look a bit better, more like the Prius Prime. Also, the engine is supposed to become even more thermally efficient to get even better mpg's. I agree about the interior, they tried way too hard to make it weird looking. I hope the refresh addresses this by making it look a bit more palatable.

I had the 2017 Prius Two Eco and I had to trade it in for an Elantra because the seats were killing my back and the brakes were making weird noises. In addition, my mpg during short trips around town started to crater for some reason. The gas engine would stay on for the whole trip (you only save gas when the engine turns off and the battery takes over).
Ultimately I decided to cut it loose and traded the Prius in for an 2018 Elantra Limited (this car is basically a $20,000 luxury car). I have no regrets on the trade in. If you considering the Prius, I would advise you to check out the seats to make sure they are supportive enough and research the weird noise from the brakes. Other Prius driver's experienced the same issue after a few months of driving.

Lot of nonsens. You can drive for about 1.5 km on battery on a speed of 70 to 75 km/hour. Just lift and gently push the gaspedal. Needs some practice to learn that. No need to switch from ECO mode to EV mode.
Love that little joystick. Why the need for a giant gear stick you don't use?
If you want to turn off that reverse beep, just look for the Prius app on your Android smartphone and connect the phone to the car via a bleutooth ODBC connector. Simple as that!

What? The new car does 4.6L/100KM, premium petrol? I still drive my 2006 Prius every day. It does 4.5L/100KM, and it drinks regular petrol. It's been very hard to find a reason to buy a new car because it's so reliable and cheap to run. I wouldn't mind upgrading mine to a top spec 3rd gen Prius. However, I have always wanted a Subaru.
I could live with the looks of the front of the new car. But the rear... man it's ugly... I have not seen many of these on Australian roads.

Thank you for another honest review! I was hoping for 13 minutes of interior shots... Fundamentally the same hybrid issue has persisted from day one. You overpay for a compromised car and gas savings take 100,000 miles to break even with a normal vehicle for the same money. Plus the environmental impact of mining metals for motors and batteries in developing countries.

If you talk about "being green" you should also consider the emissions, the Prius is among the cars with the lowest emissions regarding particles, nox, etc., one of the cleanest gasoline engines ever produced. Sure, overall you may pay more if you don't drive that much, but you get a mechanically superior drivetrain with less wearing parts than in a conventional car.

    • @ragon5237
      @ragon5237 Před 6 lety +1

      1. You don't need to drive 100,000 miles to break even, if you put in all the numbers correctly.
      2. Very few Prius Owners care about the environment. Those have moved on to plug-in or full electric. Let alone "environmental impact of mining metals for motors and batteries in developing countries". Could care less.
      3. Not sure what specific or any "Hybrid Issue" you are talking about. Do look up car problems website for any "significant" issue tho, cause you will find out there's none.

Unlike what Thang said, I don't see how any synthetic material that is non-porous can breathe, and frankly I'd rather take a natural material like leather even if it can crack later on - but that can easily be avoided with leather treatment maximum once a year if you live in a hot dry desert climate, and maybe once every two years if you live in a colder humid climate like me.
