  • A chaotic and gruesome scene unfolded in Compton Friday morning after a man who was breeding pit bulls was mauled to death in his own backyard. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, officials responded to the home on Thorson Avenue, just south of Rosecrans Avenue, around 7 a.m. after a concerned friend visited the property and discovered the man’s body.
"He was feeding the dogs at which point maybe there was an altercation between some of the dogs and [they] ultimately attacked and mauled the victim,” said Michael Gomez with LASD’s Homicide Bureau.
KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on Feb. 16, 2024.

Used to have some real trailer trash type neighbors move next to me for awhile. They had three huge, very aggressive pitbulls. All of their Neighbors and myself Couldn’t be in any of the surrounding backyards without their sweet Blue, Zeus, and Duke chewing at the fence, throwing themselves at the fence, trying anything to break through to get to whatever’s on the other side. Used to sit out back, silently reading my book with my 12g next to me just waiting for them to finally break the fence down. They never did though, trashy neighbors moved, fence was fixed, new neighbors are great. Everyone’s happy. Oh I also went out to work one morning and Blue was standing on my porch, snarled at me and got ready to lunge, owner got the dog back just in the nick of time.

One time as a kid, I was riding my bike around the neighborhood when a loose pitbull came face to face with me and stood me up. I was terrified as it stared me down and I had no clue what his/her intentions were. Maybe they were just as scared as me. I saw a man walking and asked him for help. He said, "not my dog," and shrugged then walked off. The dog turned around and chased him shortly after. I rode off as fast as I could to my house. I'm so glad that guy decided to help me out of that situation. People are great.

@@mz.yumyum1461 there are no guidelines in place to make sure that these breeders treat their animals well, and as a result many don’t. When you buy from a breeder all you see are the healthiest pups/kittens that have been cleaned up. You don’t see the back room where the mothers live in filth, and you don’t see the babies that didn’t make it. Also, any animal bought from a breeder = an animal in a shelter that didn’t get adopted. If adoption was the only option then shelters wouldn’t be euthanizing so many healthy animals.

Yeah ANYwhere 13 pitbulls.. just why. People don't learn. Why is it that the same personality types will say how gentle they are and the first to apologise and minimise for the dogs behaviour but the last to take any responsibility. If you can't stop one, you have no business having one especnever off a leash. It is true that smaller dogs like chihuahua may even be more likely to bite but the obvious difference in the fatal brutal damage is where the cause of concern is. As much as every owner of them speaks about how well they train them, I have met 2 people in my whole life of being around many beautiful creatures that could do a single thing if their pit switched on them or anyone else. That makes no sense.

Compton is not exactly a fancy dog breeding neighborhood. Breeding and selling them should be illegal. There is no need for it. Shelters are full of the poor things. I think people should be vetted before 2 things #1 Birthing children - some people are just too stupid to breed & #2 owning/breeding any dogs but specifically large powerful dogs. If the HUMANS breeding the untrained dogs actually got some real prison time & the GOV put a true focus on stopping dog fighting things would improve for these dogs. Also a lot of the "pitt bulls" are not actually pitt bulls. Most are mixed or just flat out different dogs like cane corso & 10 or so other similar looking dogs. @cynthia.. Not really. Pitbulls bred for fighting (oddly as it seems) usually never attack people.
It does appear he was breeding and breeders usually acquire grown pitbulls, which is at your own risk.
The only way he raised them all and they still attacked him was
      A) they got triggered somehow.. 1 attacked and 1 or more joined in.. maybe from him disciplining and the dog rebelled
2 If he raised them with lack of discipline (like some of these kids who kill their parents.
U have to have a balance with a pitbull if u raise it and want it as also a protection dog. They wont turn on you unless u raise with the wrong balance (youve raised the dog with a dominance over you)
If u raise pitbulls with a level of your dominance the dog will respect that its whole life.
Too much dominance and u break the young dogs spirit and its likely scared of you and everyone else.. no good as a guard / pretection dog.
1 has to know what they want in a pitbull.
The breed should not be outlawed. Its just not for everyone.

I was recently mauled by a neighbor’s pit bull mix. Been feeding it for months as a reward for barking at strangers plus the owner can’t afford to properly feed it or they don’t feed it or give it water. He took a huge chunk out of my arm. The damage is horrible, medical’s climbing, disfigurement permanent. AND!!! Discovered the previous tenants complained to the POLICE & CITY DOG POUND to come get the dog for snapping at the children and they refuse!!! The POUND Stating the owner has to bring the dog in and pay a $10 surrender fee. I offer the owner money to take the dog in and the owner refuses, putting it in a cage less than 5ft away from our back steps, it broke out the cage, murdering the other neighbor’s pet rabbit and eating it! Bet you, he didn’t. He bred his dogs for fighting. Nature v nurture. I have taken several pit bulls through out the years and they have been very good dogs but that’s bc I never encouraged aggressive behavior. Treated them with firmness, love, lots of exercise. They do love to be active. When walking the 6 yo that I currently have people ask me if she bites, I give them two answers, she is a dog and all dogs can potentially bite. The other answer is that she is very friendly and loves to be petted. Then I show them how to approach her. Usually I want the person to do an open hand pet, to the shoulder or neck. I’m not an expert or dog trainer, but this has worked well. I also have taken the time to introduce my pit to other dog owners when we run into each other. This makes it easier and other owners become more comfortable with my dog.

Probably were grumpy he probably was late feeding them or something was agitating them, maybe a prolonged agitation and they lashed out. I think it should be noted that Pit Bull is not the breed of dogs we see here. Pit Bull is often used as an umbrella term to name a certain category of dogs, but the specific breed of these dogs are American Bandogges from the look of it. They are not American Pit Bulls. American Bandogges are created by mixing Bull breeds such as the American Pit Bull with Mastiffs to get the defined look, athleticism, and drive of the American Pit Bull with the size and manstopping instincts of Mastiffs. While American Pit Bulls are usually bred, trained, and sold for hunting and fighting purposes and generally not considered good for protection work or guarding, Bandogges are often bred, trained, and used for protection work and guarding and are seen as quite effective.

I've got a bandogge. His mother is an English mastiff and dad is a pit bull. He's 129lbs of big baby, but an amazing guard dog and protected of our small farm animals. I had previously had an English mastiff female, she was 160lbs and the most gentle giant. My current dog came from a person like this who should never have owned animals and had the puppies, who were about 6mos old at the time starving in his nasty basement when he was arrested for dealing. Someone had called me up and my mother and I each took a puppy to foster. It's been 3yrs and this is honestly one of the best dogs I've ever had. They need to be active and have a purpose. The man in the video above most likely was abusing or mistreating those dogs in some way..trying to make them mean or intimidating. nobody's well cared for pets do things like that.

Thank you. People are ignorant. The media loves to use "pitbull" to describe any dog with a square-looking head or muscular body.
They use it to scare people. They use it as a demonized tag-word...
Any large breed can be dangerous in the hands of abusive, incompetent, or ignorant humans. It's not the breed. It's the human raising them!
This guy who was killed was a BREEDER, who kept his dogs caged outside 24/7 (lack of needed socialization with humans) and exploited these dogs to make money!
IMO: backyard breeding is selfish and anyone who buys a bred dog from these scumbags should also be ashamed of themselves.
Every bought dog means a dog in the shelter dies...
There are so many pit mixes being euthanized daily, as these amateur backyard breeders pump out litter$ for themselves... exploiting the momma dogs for income (then usually abandonning the dog, when it gets past prime breeding age).

Don’t forget to add in the word Terrier. The one and only “ Pit Bull “ is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Terriers are small dogs, true APBT generally hangout around the 40lb mark ( some are larger) and are typically not human aggressive but have a very high prey drive. I commend you for what you’re saying. The term being used an an umbrella term to lump in multiple breeds is wrong and gives multiple breeds a bad reputation especially the American Pit Bull Terrier which isn’t even responsible for a fraction of the attacks it gets blamed for.
