How to film bike rides? 15 tips for filming cycling videos [Insta360 X4, X3 or X2, GoPro & phone]

- How do you film yourself when cycling ? This video is about the cameras I use on my bike rides and my 15 tips on how to film yourself while riding.
I film all my rides using a 360 camera ( the Insta360 One X2 or Insta360 X3 or the new version Insta360 X4), my old GoPro 5 Session and my Samsung Phone. I like to be as light as possible when cycling so all of my filming equipment is small enough to be carried in my back pockets. The newly launched Insta360 X3 camera can be even better.
The 360 camera is the best for filming myself and everything around. I use the Insta360 One X2 model but the Insta360 X3 or Insta360X4 are even better. The camera software makes this selfie stick invisible in the final footage so it will appear like a small drone is following you around.
If you are interested in one of the the Insta360 X4, Insta360 X3 or Insta360 X2 cameras, you can use my affiliate links* and receive a free original accessory when making a purchase:

I also use the GoPro 5 Session. I like it because the image quality is great and the size is really small. It can be mounted on the bike or stored in the back pocket.
I always have the phone with me when riding, so, I’m using it for still shots and for photos offcourse.

I’m always concern about my own safety when riding and filming. I do it at slower speed than usual, or even when fully stopped. I don’t want to damage myself or the cameras😉 Please do the same all the time. You are the only one responsible for your own safety.

wow ! that 360-degree camera on a stick that disappears during post-production is SO cool !
Best video seen to date that shows the use of action cameras, 360 cameras, and equipment - sticks and mounts, in one video in a simple way.
thank you Frank. glad that it helps you
Thanks always wondered how to get those pics now I know thanks for your great videos
thank you for the nice comment
Very helpful video and gorgeous scenery! Several years ago I was cycling around Sighișoara and it was a day I won't soon forget. The scenery was a dream and the people I encountered were the friendliest I've met.
Thank you also Heinrich. Happy to hear that you enjoyed that part of Transylvania, Sighisoara is a really nice place to visit indeed.
Nice one! Good tips. I'm thinking about investing in the 360 X2 to add another dimension to my videos. Good to see some practical tips for using it on a bike.
thanks Coxy ! yes, it is a very useful camera for bike riding. It adds some extra editing time but for me it is worth it. Watched some of your videos... how amazing is that bird that follows you around, incredible !
@@MySTREETvideos ah yes. Magpies are a protective native bird in Australia. They nest this time of year and the males swoop to ward off predators. They think cyclists are a threat. I filmed that with a gopro 7 black on my bars, and hero 4 on my helmet pointed back. I got a unicorn mount now which allows a less "up the nose" angle 😂
@@ChrisCoxCycling that's a great video!
Great item to have in our weekender horse trailer!
Wonderful Video , Thank u man Regards *"The Pathfinders"*
thank you also.
My Street: I was so glad to see that when you film the rear view, you have the wheel in the frame. I see so many cycle videos that just have the tarmac and sky in view which I think is a waste of time when drivers close pass you or knock you off your bike!
Thank you. yes, I like to see the rear wheel also, or at least someone else in the frame
Really good advice - thx a lot for your efforts and many good rides in the future
thank you Steffen
Very useful idea, thank you for sharing your idea with us. Really glad to watch your content
thank you AZ-Man
Wow. You are my teacher now. Such a helpfull video
;-))) thank you. happy to help you !
I like to mount my selfie stick with two pipe clamps and have it forward and off to the side. It makes it stable and gives a wide choice of angles...
yes...that's a great setup... I used to to this also but the clamp that I had broke so need to find another one
Awesome 😊 and thanks for sharing. Safe riding 😊😊
thank you also. All the best !
This is a great video, thanks!!!
Great tips!! Thanks for sharing.
thanks John
Very nice tips. thanks for your video.
thank you
This is the best video on the topic
Thank you, glad that you like it
Good video, thank you 👍
Hi, great video and really helpful. We are about to get our first Go Pro this week and thank you for the great tips. All our current cycling videos have been done on a phone.
thank you. You have great videos on your channel and they look really good, so that phone works well it seems ;-)
Nice!Thank you for the video.
you are welcome ;-)
thanks for the great video and i feel you. i am 360 cam user also and like you are cyclist also. thanks also for the tips. always take care
thank you Gerald. watched some of your videos... what an amazing cycling infrastructure you have in Qatar !
Very Good , Thanks for Sharing!
thank you also
Awesome video thanks 🙏 learn a lot
thank you, glad that it helps. I see you have lots of cycling videos, I will check them out also.
Good idea & very helpful video
thank you Mat
Some great tips there, at the moment i normally use an insta360 go2 and a hero black but thinking about the oneX2
Thanks Martin. The go2 is quite a clever little gadget. I saw some footage with it and it's incredible how stable it is. I believe you are happy with it also.
@@MySTREETvideos , yeah very happy with it so easy to use on the bike, and when vlogging direct to the camera, normally got it in my pocket when I'm out and about as well
I have cycling vlogs..I really want to improve more. I started filming my rides since June...Thank you for your video tips...
wow, nice to see videos from different parts of the world. And you are a fast runner also (I will do some running videos soon I hope).
Nice video! Very helpful 👏🏼👏🏼
thank you Diego
Great video for a new comer like me. Thank you for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻
happy to hear that it helps, thank you.
Thank You for your tips. If I may, I would recommend that your voice level gets higher than the music. If music needs to be used at all, because it is distracting. When I want to pay attention to what you are saying I have to increase the volume, and when the music comes up, I need to lower the volume. Just a tip. Thanks again for your instructions.
Hey Marco, thanks for the advice, I think I solved it in more recent videos.
Thanks for the nice informative video. I use a Go Pro mounted on my bike stem. The mount can rotate 360 degrees so it can get forward, side, and rear footage. I also have a Go Pro which is handheld and has a tripod extension for the side of the road footage - and of course, my iPhone which also takes excellent handheld footage. I do like the Insta360 visuals, some really different angles to the Go Pro.
sound like a great setup. I've seen that type of mount, looks very handy to use.
Thank you! got some good tips!
hi , im from the Philppines. i like your content. please create more :)

This is so helpful. I'm trying to film backpack while I'm hiking
Hello Rei, thank you, glad that it helps. You can check also the video posted before this one...it is exactly about how I film my hiking trips....maybe is even more useful to you.
Well done mate thank you for sharing. Ride on! 🙂
thank you also for the comment
Great tips! I've been using the GoPro 8 and 10 for biking videos on my channel for the past year in TimeWarp mode to do time lapse of full rides, but after seeing what you're doing with the Insta360 I need to get one of those to add more variety of shots. Love it.
Hello ! Thank you. You ride in some really nice places as I see on your channel. Yes, the Insta360 gives you some interesting shooting options that only a 360 camera can offer. I also plan to get myself a GoPro 10 maybe, just for the normal shots and have 2 points of view when riding.
Great tips and tutorial, thanks for sharing.
happy to hear that it's useful
I don’t bother cycling in the UK anymore because it’s now unliveable here, perpetually raining and ALWAYS windy.
you know what they say: what doesn't kill you makes you stronger ;-)
Great biking video. Video stabilization and sound HOW TO would be a great addition to your vids. Also, any review on the Go Pro Max 360?
thank you Victor. There is one video about sound coming up later in January so I hope you will watch it also. I didn't used the Max 360 yet, if I will get the chance to have one I will review it for sure.
This was really helpful! Thank you
thanks also, glad that it helps you out
Thank You
thanks for the tips
thanks for watching. Happy New Year !
Great video, great bike!

Brilliant video
thank you
Excellent Video - You deserve way more subscribers.... I subbed and will look into the Camera. Great Job!
thank you so much
very use full videos ..
Ik im late to this video but i wish i could produce videos like urs, i also bike and do many other sports and have a youtube channel to share my passion and knowledge. Im a noob at filming and making videos but have been trying to improve. Thanks for this videos, I’ll try to use some of those angles on my fiture videos
thanks man, I just watched your "how to swim for longer without getting tired" video, great advices there, very useful.
@@MySTREETvideos thanks!
Hi nice video, it's really help, I just bought insta360 one x2, and I love cycling too, question what's is the best invisible stick length for taking video cycling? Thanks
Thank you. I use the 70cm stick as it is the smaller one and I can fit it in the back pocket
@@MySTREETvideos Hi at the moment i only have standard selfie stick with tripod from insta360, is that ok? did u use this 2 function stick too, or just use on selfie stick without integrated tripod?
I have the tripod 2 function stick also, very usefull for hiking for example but I find it quite big for cycling, if I put it in the back pocket it's not very confortable.
Awesome video…. Thank you
thanks Frederick
Such a great video, really helped!
thanks Sean, happy to hear that
Awesome video
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing. Great video and very professional. How long the insta360 battery last?
thabk you Jash.Well, I really didn't managed to consume it all yet while filming. For the amount i shoot, it lasts me for 2 consecutive days and then it's at around 40% and I recharge it. I'm actually verry happy with the battery performance
@@MySTREETvideos Great! It sounds like it better than my gopro. Thnk you for your reply.
thank you :)
Great video thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great video! Thanks!! DD
thanks Dennis
Helpful video. Curious what brand/type of saddle mount you have got.
thank you...it's not from a brand, just got it from a accessories store quite cheap...probably you find on amazon something similar
What Mount do you use on the handlebars with the 360 camera?
it's the bike mount that came with the Insta360 bike bundle
Great educational work, Mircea. Personally I have gather a lot of filming hours on bike, chest and helmet mount, I even caught you in some footage when you've overtaken me :) , but unfortunatelly I never get to edit them. So from my pov it would be great if you will be able to describe some simple methods for editing as well. Cheers!
Multumesc Costi ;-) Well, the editing is the hard part, if you don't like doing it than it will always be a struggle to put all that footage together. I use Filmora X editing software but i used to work for many years (older channel) with the simplest free software available on Earth: Windows Movie Maker. Just cutting the parts i like, adding some music and that was it - it worked just fine ;-)
thanks for sharing friend 👌
Nice one!!!
Thanks!
nice video..by the way can you also put some pictures or videos from your phone to insta360 editing app?
thank you. I use the Insta360 editing app only for the fist edit of the 360 videos. I turn them into normal videos and then, together with the videos from the phone, I edit everything in Filmora X. I think it has a lot more options for editing if you compare it with the Insta360 app.
thanks dude :)
👍
Hi, Thank you for the informative video. What kind of handlebar mount are you using for the selfie stick please? (link?)
thank you. It's the handlebar mount that comes with the Insta360 One X2 bike bundle, it has a gopro type of mount but also an adaptor for the selfie stick. It worked great so far, however i try not to ride too hard when the road surface is not perfect and there are a lot of vibrations and shaking
Thanks for useful tips! What selfie stick are you using?
thank you also for the comment. It's a insta360 stick that i've bought from their website...the smallest one available
very nice!
thank you
Great video and tips. Curious does the insta 360 have free editing software or is there a fee?
thank you. Yes, they have a mobile app and a desktop one where you can edit the clips - it's free of charge
Great video, well done😊
thank you Tom
@@MySTREETvideos thank you my friend, I also just done a video of my recent bike ride using this great camera czcams.com/video/1ydN16yD4Rk/video.html
Thank you so much for this vidéo.
I want to buy insta 360 x2, but I'm worring about Colors in videos and vidéo quality... Your video with insta 360 is edited and you added à filter to Improve Colors quality or it's original vidéo without editing ? Thanks
Hello. I don'use any filters or color grading in any of my videos. The footage is exactly as it comes out of the camera. One tip for the Insta360 Onex2 is to export the final edit in 2k or 4k before uploading to youtube. This way CZcams will use a better codec for the video. If you upload a normal HD video than it will look very bad on youtube.
Newbie sir watching you videos
thanks, hope you will like them
Thanos for sharing. Good tips. So the 360 does have active tracking to film yourself while making turn on switchbacks? I subbed btw.
thanks for your comment. Yes, you can track yourself in the editing app. The camera films everything around and then it's you who decides what to actually show in the final video
@@MySTREETvideos thank you
Good Stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
thanks for the nice video, would you recommend any camera for safety for cyclist?
thank you. what do you mean by camera for safety? like the ones used on cars for filming everything in case of an accident? I don't use that sorry I couldn't help you
@@MySTREETvideos yes, like dash camera but for bike. Thanks for the nice video
Great video! Could you tell me which category you select to put a CZcams Cycle vlog under? The closest I see is Autos & vehicles or Sports, but nothing that really fits the cycling category specifically for some reason.
hey there...i think i use Sports category unless it's more travel related like routes and cycling destinations
@@MySTREETvideos Ok, thank you!!
Hii, watch this from Thailand
hi there, I like your thumbnails design on your latest videos
Nice demos, thanks ! Did you make any video explaining your process to capture clean audio on the 360 while you ride ? Or do you use a separate device and re-synch later maybe ? Thanks !
thanks for the suggestion, that's a good idea for a future video. I usually record directly from the Insta360 (if now wind) or with an external mic recorder and then sync everything in the editing software
@@MySTREETvideos Thanks for your reply. Interesting how the Insta360's sound is pretty decent even though it's not that close to your face then. There's no possibility to plug an external mic (or bluetooth it) to that camera, right ?
Video-ul tau mi-a dat ideile 🙂👏👏👏👏👏. Chiar ma intrebam: unde sunt ciclistii români??
Salutare. ma bucur ca te ajuta. Stai in Spania am vazut nu?
Hi could you link the Handle bar mount, I like the idea of the selfie stick attaching to that mount, and being able to use a Go Pro or Insta 360 with it.
Hello. It's the bike mount that arrived with the bike bundle, you have it in the options of buying the Insta360 One X2: store.insta360.com/product/one_x2?insrc=INROWY0 or I think that you can find it also in the accessories page
I'm just starting to learn filming my cycling with only my mobile phone
I use the mobile phone a lot also, sometimes it's a lot easier to use as I have it with me all the time. You really don't need more for making good videos
Super video bro
thank you !
I'm thinking about quite a long bicycle trip in 2023 summer (such time because now winter is coming, also I study and work, so can't go for longer time. Also to prepare financially easier, cause I plan to spend few hundred euros since everything I have is just a bicycle and the same bicycle needs a bit of maintenance 🤣). So, about camera I thought to buy some cheaper action camera to mount on the helmet, but didn't see here for tips. Is that worthy? Selfie stick looks kinda uncomfortable for me, since one hand wouldn't be able to hold the handlebar, or very uncomfortably.
hello Paulius. Nice to hear about your cycling plans. I never used the camera placed on the helmet before but i've seen people doing it and the videso look quite imersive and dynamic. I quess it's just a question of giving it a try and see if it works for you.
Looking for the Insta360 One X2 link. 👀
hello, it's in the description. Here it is also: store.insta360.com/product/one_x2?insrc=INROWY0
Excellent video - well presented 👍🏽
Iove the images from the 360. But i notice some times on these insta 360 vids the image looks weird and shaky also Im scared that i will damage that lens. What do you think about that?
thank you ! Well, I believe it all depends on the way you hold that camera stick. If you shake it around very hard than off course the final footage will not look ok. Now you don't have to become a human gimbal, but just to keep it in a descent steady position (and I mean more in the sense of not changing the point of view very quickly. just keep it on the right, film for several seconds, and than change on the front and so on... it will work fine). For the lens - I'm using the sticky lens protections and I'm being careful not to drop the camera ;-)
You can check other videos I've made and see how it looks.
@@MySTREETvideos perfect thank you for such a quick reply
How long can u record with x3?
I don't have the X3, I have the X2. On the official site they say that 5.7K@30fps - 80 minutes but I never record more than 4-5 minutes at once as it would be more difficult in the edit for me to use such long videos. However, i never had battery issues, i can record all day in this manner, with short videos.
this is helpful information
I wonder if you could lower your voice while increasing the music’s volume?
thanks for your feedback, I'm still trying to find the best sound for the videos so hopefully I will manage to improve things
Great tips!! Can I ask, is that the Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick you’re using in the first couple of videos, or is it a different brand telescopic selfie stick?
hello Brad, I have only selfie sticls from Insta 360, one telescopic with tripod incorporated that i used with the phone for filming the speaking part of the video and another (the smaller one) that I use when cycling as I can put it in the back pocket beeing smaller.
@@MySTREETvideos thanks!
Very good tutorial. . I just have one camera
thank you. One camera is more than enough for filming
@@MySTREETvideos Oo. . . Come n wacth my amatuer video. . . Thanks
Did you ever use the one x2 under the saddle? When i tried it it seems like it’s shaking too much. Can you give your opinion about that?
Hy Jesse, no, I didn't but it seems like a good idea. thanks, will give it a try next time. My thinking is that if you place it dirrectly on the mount under the saddle it should be ok....if you also place the selfie stick than shaking will be present.
@@MySTREETvideos thanks, would be curious to see some footage of that sometime
can share which selfie stick u r using ? really looks compact. thanks ahead
Hello Ben, it's the 70cm one (it is indeed more compact than the classic one). You can find it on their website (you have the link in the description) but you have to go to the Insta360 One R list of accessories....I don't know why they didn't put it on the One x2 accessories list also.
Does that selfie stick comes with inbuilt tripod?
@@wanhamidiaziz346 hello, the small 70cm stick no, it doesn't have built in tripod. I usually carry a small packable tripod that i mount on the small selfie stick but for this video I didn't had it with me so i filmed the regular stick with a built in tripod that you see on the shot.
@@MySTREETvideos Thanks!
Great video! Many thanks. I'm subbing! I want to start filming some London cycles for fun so I have an excuse to get fit (I am a bit fat!) :) What would you say is the most easiest way to start?
thank you. the hardest thing is to get started, to do the first step...than everything will be easy as you enjoy every ride and video that you make. Just use any camera you like/have, if you have a good story to tell I think it counts a lot more than the technology you are using. Good luck!
@@MySTREETvideos I just used your affiliate link and ordered an Insta 360 - so I hope you get a few £'s for it! :)
hey there.... sorry for late answer, i just saw it now. Thanks for using the link, are you happy with the camera?
thanks for sharing this content. really informative! I use a Go Pro Hero 8 Black mainly, using a chest harness, or a clip-on mount attached to the back of my food delivery bag (which i am currently doing). The chest harness provides the most stable buttery footage. For selfie footage, i will detach from the chest harness and hold it up front for a few brief moments. The 360 camera footages you shown look great but i'll need to invest in out perhaps in the future.
My vlogs are up on my channel do check it out :)
thanks for the message Kai, I will check out your videos. I know that the GoPro 8 has excllent stabilization so ...maybe I will takea better GoPro in consideration also as the 5 Session that I have is quite old
Would love to know what editing software do you use ?
i do all the videos with Filmora
I just started about a week ago 😅
enjoy the ride !
pls balamce music volume with voice
Agreed, had to keep changing the volume level.
Is it possible to mount it on your helmet but rotated a quarter turn? So it is skinnier in the wind for aero purposes. Like the lenses are facing left and right rather than front and back.
hello David. I don't see any reason why you couldn't do that...it films 360 anyway so it doesn't matter where the lanses are facing .
Hello sir...which camera wud u recommend for a biker and can access that invisible selfie stick trick? One R or X2?
hello. I haven't used the One R so I can't give you any advice on that one. I use the One X2 quite often on the bike and until now I'm very happy with it. You can check other videos on the channel that were filmed with One X2 to see how it looks.
do you know whats a good chest phone mount to record, if so what brand?
Hy there. To be honest with you I didn't even knew that chest phone mounts exist. I use chest mount but only for the GoPro.
Let's be friend bro,,, stay connectd
I wish there was an easy to film your self using a self stick and just a mobile phone. The problem is you dont want to use a front camera, so you have to rotate your phone backwards and then you cant see where you are filming.
there are phones with really good front cameras also I think. Mine (Samsung S20FE does a descent job but I'm sure that there are others even better). Anyway, a back safety ring could be useful, so that you can anchor one of the fingers and don't drop the precious device ;-)
@@MySTREETvideos what do you mean by back safety ring? This is to hold the phone from dropping from the stick?
no, not with the stick but just to hold it more secure in hand...there is a ring that you can attach on the back of the phone
