I'd like first to say you're such a beautiful person from the inside. This is such a beautiful cause. I have looked you up several times based on what you believe in and what you stand for, and you are absolutely right about what is going on. I myself was locked up once upon a time. I think that it is so bizarre. First of all what stood out was most of the inmates were prodominantly black. They used to bring those people in on tours to look at us like we're some kind of animals in the zoos. I and a few of the other brothers in there refer to those places as "slave ships on land". I thank you for acknowledging us.

Rasheed Barnes Why does that matter? As if people are in prison for being caught with a small baggie of weed. Smh. If you end up in prison you probably got caught with a harder drug (crack, heroin) , a large amount for distribution and probably have a long criminal history to begin with. No one goes to prison on their very first offense unless it is a very serious crime. Also, the white equivalent to crack would be crystal meth which ironically carries the same exact sentencing guidelines as crack cocaine. The reason why crack haves such a stiff sentencing guideline in the first place is because black community leaders petitioned for it because it was destroying their community. All of the crying about blacks being locked up (for committing crimes) is influencing judges and prosecutors to release criminals these communities have been terrorised by. Also, please show me evidence that whites are not being prosecuted the same as blacks WITH THE SAME RECORDS. Every story I've seen published was only taking into account a black and a white man being prosecuted by the same crime but left out previous history which is a HUGE factor in sentencing. If anyone actually had evidence this was happening it would be front and center and someone would be being investigated by the Democrats in congress. Sadly it all seems to be propaganda and hit pieces against white people with stories in BuzzFeed and Washington Post as usual.

Her book focuses on a narrative. Her positions are based on a narrative. It's not condescending or subtle racism to ask questions or point out facts that she doesn't address. It's called journalism.

I reiterate Michelle Alexander's point. End drug prohibition and you will end the vast majority of violent crime in this country. When your parents have failed you, when your education has failed you, when your community has failed you, when your country has failed you (economy, etc.), the overwhelming majority of young black men learn to get it the only way the know how. Unfortunately, this comes with violence and urban decay.
Harsher penalties can increase the likelihood of more violent crimes. A person engaged in a crime, e.g,. robbery, may assume an "all or nothing" attitude due to the realization of the extensive penalty for their offense. This is a very complicated issue a more lenient consequence may not necessarily reduce the desire to commit a serious offense. She is unearthing some of the social/historical underpinnings of how we got here. We all need to consider this information when thinking of solutions.

Ms. Alexander. I feel the best way of unraveling these injustices is providing legal assistance too the least of these. Matthew 25:31-46, Leviticus Chapter 19. I personally realize that I've been treated badly my entire life. One I've been assaulted repeated by the authorities since a teen and I'm approaching 60. I approached your friend and colleague that taught at the Union Theological Seminary. I'm sorry for my choice of defending the one of low means but I refuse too leave one behind. One must defend the defenseless even if I must make the ultimate sacrifice. I'm a man. Remember these sign's plastered on the chest of coloured men during the 50's and 60's. Well I do being a product of civil rights movement and being born as well as raised in the Mecca of black culture representing the whole diaspora. Harlem USA. I'm not fearing any man I just want to do the will of God and provide the necessary assistance with his word as a means for effective change. Two key attributes I possess would consist of being exposed too his principles and laws from infancy. Secondly my voice. Remember one's voice and message sends a wave or ripple too the mindset of other's in their hearts and mindset. This leads too collaborative constructive conscious thought towards the iniquities that plague our communities. Lastly always remember your a woman and nurturer. A lot of the abuses have come from the hands of woman and in the same manner have been a major catalyst for effective change in my life. I've worked in several area's of employment. My last work experience I was subjugated too harassment for supporting DACA. The implementing of this organization would disrupt the systematic prejudices of those marginized within society. As you've mentioned yourself, our shared colleague as well as myself benefitted from the labor of those who came before us. I remember my Father and his service in WWII and other members. They paved the way for their descendents. I know your very much aware that's why you inspire me too be a civil rights attorney. You are aware of Loving vs Virginia. I'll probably wear the cross but that's okay. I will be in this persons corner too the bitter end. You must protect the very vulnerable. The orphans, widows, poor and castigated. So please remember me and pray for all of the men that look after the Queen's in our life. Please take care and may God bless you.

Outside of the sycophants, does anyone find her a bit evasive? She doesn't make sense at times, especially concerning the realities of actual violent crime rates. I read her book and understand how racism is a factor for incarceration disparities, and how felony records keep people from participating in society, but that's all felons, not just blacks. She talks about prison terms for possession, but doesnt clarify felony strikes ?or parole violations on violent crime convictions?
She leaves a lot out of the equation. I respect that her focus is racism, but the bias towards narrative is just undeniable. Sociological research can create whatever outcomes you want... framing of questions ...bias of focus...if your subjects think they can benefit from certain answers, or omissions.

How can she just say that black fathers keep connections with children more than other groups? Cuz a researcher says so? A law professor should know better than to consider that an answer.
Her book is very misleading and lacks personal responsibility and individuality. She also doesn't mention that state laws are different in every state despite the similiarites of violating the law, and some are repeat offenders. The only thing I agree with her is the government should leave the drug businesses and make it a health issue in the medical field.
TY JAY !! I read her book for my Sociology course. Writing a term paper. The more I read, the more I was waiting for her to bring some perspective into it other than a racist conspiracy. I feel like she evades in this interview.
I grew up in a high crime area and I know what I saw growing up. Something that bothers me about her and all my Sociology professors so far.. they didn't grow up anywhere near the hood. They had zero experience with it. Their eyes saw nothing. All their info, all their theories..all 2nd hand. I've been incarcerated. If someone like her, or my Sociology professors came asking me questions, I would tell them what I think would benefit me. It's like they don't realize how people will manipulate their stories or tell these "researchers" what they might want to hear. I think her book has value, but it's missing so much.

@biozamadotcom Crime is integrated with the economy. A good example is how the War on Drugs has effected Black people in the US economically either through imprisonment, stigmatization of Black people (hindering job efforts) or limits on the right to vote. The resources that get poured into these questionable operations would be better utilized elsewhere. Thus what she has to say is very relevant even in an economical sense.
