CARTA: How Did Lucy Become a Fossil?

- Lucy's 1974 discovery reshaped our understanding of early hominins. Geological studies dated her to 3.21 million years ago. Questions arose about her life and death, leading to investigations into her burial site and skeletal preservation. Found scattered on the surface, less than 40% of her skeleton was preserved. Some parts were articulated, indicating rapid burial, possibly by a river. Missing elements suggest scavenging and erosion. Debate surrounds her cause of death, with theories including a fall or predation. Bone fractures hint at trauma, but the exact circumstances remain unclear. Geological evidence disputes death by mudslide or flood. Tooth marks on her bones lack conclusive evidence of predation. These debates underline Lucy's enduring influence on paleoanthropology, sparking ongoing research into human evolution. Recorded on 04/06/2024. [Show ID: 39823]

This was so interesting. Dr. Behrensmeyer showed real scientific professionalism in covering all possibilities and simply stating why some were more likely than others without ever being dismissive of any ideas. This is the sort of presentation that keeps people fascinated by science and wanting to know more.
In 3.18 million years, shit happens!
Very informative! Many thanks.
Drug deal gone bad.🤔
As to falling out of a tree I have fallen out of several trees plus a 20 foot fall off a sandstone cliff when my holds broke from the cliff. That was 40+ years ago. I am 73 years old now. So a Fall from a tree can be fatal but not very common for it be fatal. Broken limbs are possible but what I see in the bones as displayed do not show the type of fractures which would have been common from a severe fall impact.
I'm thinking the fall itself wasn't fatal, but left her injured such that she was vulnerable to predators (broken ankle, say), or even died of infection (such as from a compound fracture).
Much obliged for this video
Thanks. This is so interesting. I have been following her since she was found.
"When the levee breaks" -- I feel an alternative stream of lyrics to that old Led Zeppelin song coming up....
That was a Memphis Minnie and Kansas City Joe song.
@@rembrandt972ify led Zeppelin has a long history of "covering" songs without crediting the originals.
@@DivineBanana They were bad bad mans.
When I was younger there was lits of talk about her being killed during a volcanic eruption. I guess that was discarded years ago.
Not too sure if listing ALL possibilities of cause of death is actually the answer to actual cause of death!?….but maybe yet another Theory of Conjecture will help satisfy those who believe in long words and Latin descriptives to describe basic common sense and lateral reasoning…🙄
Lucy was found on a skyridge in a diamond mine of fossils.
Hadar, Ethiopia
Lucy, a 3.2 million-year old fossil skeleton of a human ancestor, was discovered in 1974 in Hadar, Ethiopia. The fossil locality at Hadar where the pieces of Lucy's skeleton were discovered is known to scientists as Afar Locality 288 (A.L.
I get the “Lucy in the sky with diamonds,” reference. It even sounded like Elton John as I read it. 👍🏻
How did Lucy become a fossil? She died. She became a lucky geological state of being, and we are very lucky.
Wow, did you earn a degree with those reasoning skills or are you just gifted? Why would you make such a cursory assessment when there’s entire lecture trying to discover the actual reasons why Lucy was preserved using actual examples of known animals that died and what happened to them, and exploring other hypotheses?! That’s some weird shit. It’s like “oh hey, nvm this lecture - I’LL save you all some time: Lucy died. Then she fossil. The end. Ya, it’s that easy.”
Or maybe you watched 5 mins, made your enlightening comment, then when on to watch cat videos?
@@NicolaiAwesome kust gifted.
@@NicolaiAwesomecalm down its not that serious
@@NicolaiAwesome I dare say I feel the need to register a protest to your introduction of cats into this silliness. It borders on slander.
Cats, are brilliant and cunning ALONG with being silly and just cool.
She could have been sick or injured and then got caught in one of those levee breaks and got partially buried
Lucy was far from being a complete skeleton. Reports have said that Lucy's various pieces were scattered and some pieces as far as a few hundred yards apart or farther. Is this correct and how were the pieces collected?
You would have to revisit those reports you mentioned.
All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.
If they aren’t a breeding pair, then they can’t really damage the ecosystem in any significant way. So cute, I’m happy for the town. 🎉❤
Please, breeding pair of what?
Maybe she was attacked by a family member.
She stood in the way of the birth of the patriarchy and had to be eliminated.
My guess is she died.
Well, she always wanted to be one
Like to hear more facts, not the history of your education
It was _murder!_
"There are no witnesses." Or... maybe just none that are willing to come forward. Could it have been gang violence? (Sorry... I couldn't resist the joke.)
Same way RFK Jr did? Just a guess.
There is no such thing as Lucy it is all made up.
😂
Why?
@@matttcoburn maybe because the earth is flat and god created the earth in seven literal days? If you catch my drift.
@@mind.archives. There is no such thing as God it is all made up.
@@matttcoburn IF you catch my drift.
impressed !! 3.18 billion years ? how can it be posible for those bones to survived ??
They fossilized, like dinosaur bones did.
Million not billion
Gene survive millennia 😊😊😊
research the process of fossilization.
So, you don’t say how lucy became a fossil. Perhaps stay on topic for a more convincing talk.
Interesting, because that’s exactly what she talked about. Did you watch it?
7:30 gives the reason why the remains became fossilized
You’re welcome to make your own presentation. Please do.
You haven't figured it out that she died?
You have to turn the cartoons off and listen. But alas, there’s the rub. Isn’t it?
😂😂😂😂
