The latest film in the Alien franchise, (as of this writeup) and the earliest film in the timeline, Prometheus sought to answer questions we've had since the beginning, about the origins of the Xenomorph. Further, the movie itself explores the questions of the origins of life itself. And more questions, and more questions. Lots and lots of questions, really. Answers? Good question.

The more I watched the film, the more I was convinced that Ridley had made a 'teen slasher-flick in space.'
Seriously, they make stupid decisions, and get picked off one-by-one. Plus, there are characters that fit the 6 horror-film archetypes:
The Jock - Charlie Holloway
The Cheerleader/Ice Queen - Vickers
The Nerd/Stoner - Fifield AND Millburn
The Token Minority - The crew of Prometheus, led by Janek

While reading this, all I could think of was Jason X, which tbf is probably way more entertaining than any modern Alien movie could hope to be.
YEP, its a stupid movie. Scott should have just stopped at Aliens, but, like terminator and Rocky and many other franchises like alien v predator, theres too much money to be made, studios throw too much money at the directors and actors and these stupid sagas never ever end..
I always thought Wayland in this film looked like old Biff.

1. After watching her boyfriend get roasted by a flamethrower for being a contamination risk to the ship, why didn't Shaw tell anyone about the aborted Alien in the medical bay?
2. Why doesn't anyone ask Shaw why she's covered in blood when she discovers Weyland?
3. Why doesn't Shaw tell anyone why she's covered in blood when she discovers Weyland?
4. Where do the two scientists who were chasing Shaw disappear to when she discovers Weyland?
5. Why does Shaw "discover" Weyland in the first place? Isn't he funding the mission? Why's he hiding?
6. Why don't Shaw and Furiosa run to the side rather than in a straight line when running from a rolling ship?
7. Why does Noomi Rapace look bored and/ or confused throughout this movie?
8. Why was I bored and/ or confused throughout this movie?
Antichrist2000 I'm going to assume Prometheus and Alien: Covenant retcon the AvP movies, since those obviously take place before these movies but the Xenomorph still exists.

People always claim that stormtroopers can't shoot, utterly ignoring all of the times they do so petty well( Attack on Hoth. Battled on Endor. Your example above.) and instead only point to the times they missed( Death star fights. Bespin fight) which are all explained by the fact that they were under orders to not kill the heroes.

Looking back on this movie, I think I see where it was trying to come from. And subsequently where this movie got lost up its own ass.
This movie...is a very loose criticism of Religion. I think that's why so many anti-evolution themes were crammed into this movie. It's kind of like a Feature-Length version of a Clock-Work Origin from Futurama; the story of Evolution that begins to resemble Creationism.
Mankind going out into "the heavens" to search for their creator. Then when they do find those that created them, it's like nothing they ever expected.
I do like how the Engineer responds to David with, "If we were Immortal, we'd have no need for Mankind."
That to me just drips with so much subtext.
But I don't think anything this "profound" was necessary for a Prequel that belonged in the Alien Franchise. Because it establishes that Human Beings and the Xenomorphs were both created by the same source...And frankly that's a little disturbing...
...Unless of course that somehow or another, the Engineers didn't make the Xenomorphs. Maybe the reason they were trying to seed planets with life, is in the hopes of engineering a biological weapon that could properly combat the Xenomorphs, and that maybe that black goo they had on their ships were experiments they were running to harvest Xenomorph DNA.
But you see where I'm going with this? This movie just raises too many questions and virtually answers none. It's frustrating.

Also this movie wasn't supposed to be alien focused, they wanted this to be its own movie in the alien universe so don't think of it as a prequel

Do not expect the follow-up to this film to be any better. In fact it's going to make this pile of zhat look better.
I felt this movie had a lot of similarities to Alien vs Predator.
Look the fact that he is alive without his head blew his mind

Charlie Chaplin was 73 when his youngest child was born and the oldest ever man to father a child was reportedly Les Colley (1898 - 1998, Australia), who had his ninth child a son named Oswald to his third wife at the age of 92 years 10 months, so it's entirely possible that Weyland had Vickers at that age.
Especially if RICH and got all the lovers he could ever want.
Not too bad, but I think you missed some obvious stuff. - Why David would target Holloway - after Weyland told him to 'try harder' he needed quick answers and Holloway was drunk, not in quarters, and importantly, expendable. The fact that Holloway was mean to him might also play a part even though David is supposed to be above having a sensitive ego.
Shaw didn't just 'outrun' the Engineer - he never chased her - perhaps seeing her treatment by Weyland and Weyland's servants as reason enough to dislike and kill them, while she seemed to pose no threat.
The MedPod is not in Vickers quarters. If you pay attention to the ship layout, there is more than one door into the MedPod chamber. One is from the lounge/ bar next to Vickers chambers, and the other door is from the corridor.
The Squid didn't get out of the MedPod and thrash the lifeboat and then lock itself back in. The damage in the Lifeboat is from the rough impact with the ground.
Re: The star map, yes, not only too many matching configurations, but considering that the stars travel at differing speeds, constellations would not look the same over a time period of 33000 years.
Personally I think the playing to the creationist was 'gilding the lily'. There are subtle clues throughout the film, that despite her certainty, Shaw has reached completely incorrect conclusions about what they've found, and what it's intentions might be, and it's relation to us.
Also, I think there's a scientific error in the script, where Forde says breathing CO2 over 3% is like breathing through a tail pipe. That would be correct if she was talking about Carbon *Mon* oxide rather than Carbon *Di* oxide.
Also, I don't think the 'convenient storm' disruption the investigation was supposed to be a co-incidence. Considering the terraforming and hidden nature of the bioweapons labs, it might be reasonably concluded that it's actually a defense mechanism triggered by intruders.
This was one of the first videos I saw. It's a classic. So glad you are doing better now. It's been a wild ride, glad you didn't give up.
In a deleted scene, Mr. Waylen told DAVID to experiment the substance on one of the crew members.
"Earliest point in the timeline" OBJECTION, in AVP, Xenomorphs were shown in Ancient Egypt! I say this because of the pyramids!

As a graduate from Prometheus' school of running away from shit, I can say that Prometheus runs an amazing school.
I think Prometheus thinks it's an intelligent film that raises fundamental questions regarding faith, religion and our place in the universe... In reality it's a movie that is glossy, effects laden and pretty to look at, but has no idea what it's talking about and therefore just comes across half assed. Great ideas, lousy execution.
It's all well and good to bring up philosophical questions, but there's nothing wrong with simplicity if it works with the story. I think what they should have done instead of "finding our creators" is have a satellite or probe the planet and discover there's manufactured structures of a lost alien civilization and explore said areas. Sounds a bit plain, but it's still a better setup in my opinion.
I saw it as a cautionary tale about a crew that thought it was intelligent and raised fundamental questions regarding faith, religion and our place in the universe, and by being so blinkered missed all the clues that there is a far more sinister scenario going on, which should have caused them to be far more cautious, and far less eager to rush in. Even at the end, Shaw still thinks she is heading off to meet "our maker" , which I find hilarious considering the conclusions I took from the movie.
jimbobeire Cautionary tale my ass. Shaw was going to make Vickers waste billions, possibly trillions of dollars on a vague hunch. I would've demanded a lot more evidence before heading there.
***** Isn't that the point of a 'cautionary tale'... showing you something dumb which ends in tragedy? Also, Vickers was only pretending to be in charge, as she was hiding the fact that Weyland was on board. A man desperate to avoid death is not as rational as a man in good health. Even still, once they landed on the planet they still had plenty of opportunities to take their time and think critically about what they were doing and what they found. Instead they rushed in and rushed to judgment, and all but 2 of them perished.

My BIGGEST issue with Prometheus is how it predates Alien but has vastly superior technology to Alien. Yes, I know Alien was in the 1979 and this is in 2012, but unless they plan to reboot the entire thing...kind of have to disagree with that decision. The only thing I THINK could possibly explain that was if there was a drastic war that set mankind back in technology in some parts and so forth. But this thing has superior technology for even Aliens. I felt they should have stayed in the general style of technology used by that series or given a proper explanation as to why it was so vastly advanced in comparison. But I guess we'll never know.
However, I felt your obvious anti-religion crud (not your disagreements with the imperfect and relatively ignorant attempts at other beliefs they tried to put in) could have been left out.
Finally, someone who agrees with me about the tech in the movie.
Weyland was funding the operation, therefore, that's why they have the tech.

I might get some stick for this but I actually prefer the AvP movies as prequels. They clearly have glaring forms as films but they maintain a sense of mystery and menace for the Alien species rather than making them a side effect of some unimaginative Precursor species' science experiment.
AVP ruined the base behind the alien trilogy... The ALIEN trilogy was WAY BETTER with prometheus as its prequel... (And I hate how some idiots think the predators created xenomorphs)
Nigel S. I quite agree that the idea of Predators creating the Xenomorphs is very dumb and doesn't fit either species established traits. But that idea was not brought up in the AVP movies and anyway I don't find the idea of the Engineers creating them any better. The Engineers are boring as hell. Humanoids with funny faces? That's Star Trek TOS stuff! If they absolutely had to reduce the impressive, inhuman Alien creature to the by-product of some other race (a fantastically poor idea) they could at least have made them unique looking, like say, the Space Jockey. The AVP movies left the origin of the Xenomorphs mysterious, allowed both species to be badass and threatening, gave backstory for Wayland-Yutani's obsession with the things and why the corporation got so powerful. They kinda suck as actual films, the 2nd one in particular, but as back story they work a lot better.
Also, side note, but where the Alien "trilogy" is concerned, Alien 3 can feel free to bite me with both mouths. Resurrection was better than that, at least it was funny. Hell, parts of Requiem was better, when you could see it.

Nigel S. Yep, they needed that to make their "ancient aliens made humans" story work. But the thing is I hate that story. Always have. As Decker points out it kinda craps all over the evidence for evolution on Earth and, in my opinion which I freely admit is not going to be everyone's, seriously reduces the effectiveness of the Aliens. Because as it turns out, their not aliens at all, there something we made. No mystery, no enigmatic threat, just humans dicking with advanced science. I've seen that plot too much as well. At least AVP didn't ever try to give contrived origins to either species, just to their involvement with humanity. Fair's fair, they did still do the "ancient aliens made human civilisation" story, which I also hate, but less so, especially as it's clear the civilisation the Preds created was destroyed and later civilisations we did on our own.

The Deacon was the best part of the movie. In Predators we see a subspecies of predator called the Black Super Predators. Now we see a subspecies to the Xenomorph called the Deacon.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that it ripped off concepts from the AvP movies. And what's weird is Ridley Scott said he hated those movies....yet still created one that was very much like an AvP movie ripoff....

This is how horror movies should be for most of the deaths.
To sum this movie up:great visuals/photography/effects and M.Fassbender gives a cool performance as the android but everything else is total crap,specially the story.Other movies have plotholes,Prometheus is a gigantic plot-crater,I mean nothing here makes sense.No wonder,considering it's written by Lindeloff. The AVP movies weren't good but at least they were fairly entertaining as monster-movies.

+Sterlington Parker This Movie only introduced the Engineers/Pilot/Space Jockeys. That's about it. Then it gives us the question why the albino alien giants wants us dead. It deliberately left more questions unanswered for sequel bait. Then Ridley stated the Engineers created this evil biology to protect themselves. Which he says will be answered in the Prometheus sequel titled Alien Covenant.
+Sterlington Parker The Xenomorph skull that was shown in Predator 2 was stated to be a joke by the director at the same time paying homage to the success of Dark Horse Comic's Aliens Vs Predators. Its not to be taken seriously. Ridley Scott at one time stated he was against the idea of a crossover between Alien and Predator on film. This is why Ridley didn't direct the first AVP film. So the Alien race that the Engineers are at war with wont be the Predators. Who or what this Alien Race is, it sure to be a severe threat to the Engineers.

I'm fairly certain that they set out to make a prequel to Alien, hence the murals of fully fledged aliens in the black goo store. Then somewhere along the way Ridley Scott had a brain fart and decided to Von Daniken the whole thing and make the aliens a by-product of some kind of 'Chariots of the Gods' rerun (yawn!). From what I've seen of the original concept, including earlier scenes, it would have made a pretty good prequel to Alien and would have made much more sense. I hate this movie and its sequel; they just seem unnecessarily pretentious and also apparently occur in a universe without Isaac Asimov to tell us what a stupid idea it is to make artificial people without failsafe programming!
The movie might have been directed by an atheist, but the script was written by Damon Lindelof, who always includes a lot of heavy-handed religious symbolism in his work.

When I first saw this I thought that the alien at the beginning wasn't breaking his DNA to form a human, but to form the first life on Earth, and then Humans evolved from that many years later, but apparently not. I don't really care anyway, but that would've made more sense for someone who believes in Evolution.

we clearly see green surfaces in the opening, thus plant life already exists. i would say the makers of the movie didnt have a clear concept. they just wanted to imply some kind of beginning for some parts of life leading up to humans. but that doesnt explain how early people knew to draw that starsytem in caves^^

We are not a "random evolutionary byproduct".
Though the mutation part of evolution is "random"( to a degree), the other important part " natural selection" is hardly " random". It is a product of the circumstances present in the environment. Claiming that the result is " random" would be like claiming that deserts are " randomly placed" on the Earth.

No. They are not. They are dictated by prior circumstances. Deserts exist in certain locations , not randomly, but due to rain patterns affected by mountain ranges and body of water location, which in turn is also not random as bodies of water occur where the land is low , and drainage to another location does not exceed rainfall or water added from rivers or springs. Rivers also do not occur "randomly" . They occur where water , draining from other areas find a route of least resistance to follow due to gravity( which also is not " random", but instead dictated by mass and relative distance from other massive bodies, which is also not random, but dictated by prior circumstance of distance and relation to still other massive bodies) .
We don't get "random rainfall" levels. We get rainfall levels in an environment based upon location of bodies of water, wind patterns, and relationship to mountain ranges.
The life around an organism is also part of the environment, and affect natural selection( an island devoid of large predators places different pressures on an antelope than an plain populated by lions and hyenas) is certainly affected by those other organisms . Amount of sunlight is a selection pressure and is not " random" but dictated by weather patterns, mountains, depth below the ocean, ect, ect, ect. Not "random".
Presence of prey species is dictated , not " randomly" but by availability of vegetation for said prey to eat, which depends on rainfall and fertility of the soil, neither of which is random either.

Rf you were not you would get "random" large , sustained rainstorms in deserts, but you don't.
You would get "random" distribution of prey species, but you don't.
You would get " random" amounts of sunlight from day to day, week to week, year to year, but you don't.
These things are , more or less, predictable due to patterns caused by other circumstances in the environment which are also not random, but are also predictable due to other circumstances. Not random. Not really. Not hardly. Jungles are predictable. Deserts are predictable. Oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers are all, more or less, predictable in where they will occur and the conditions within them will be, more or less, predictable.
Oceans and lakes and rivers will not randomly become deserts , unless circumstances surrounding them( which won't happen randomly either). Same for forests and jungles, and mountaintops, ect, ect, ect.

From what i seen. I think "proto-alien" is an early form of the xenomprh after the chestburster. But it couldnt burst because, maybe chest of engeneer was to hard for it.
A good theory. They may of evolved a stronger bone structure to force there way out the rib cage while the proto line of xenos went capable.
This movie may have been bad, but the Prometheus Extended Universe has some great installments. Specifically, there's this movie called simply "Alien" that rocks
I loved this movie for the suspense, the obsession over what would happen next, and the just the story in general; and religion aside, I find it interesting that the writer dared to ask what if our creators created us just because they could...asking those type of questions isn't necessarily religion, the story is based on timeless questions, and like real life some people want to travel to the end of the earth to answer the questions, and some just want to get back to reality. I honestly think this generation isn't well equipped to enjoy a slower paced, more thought provoking movie; it was marketed more as horror/action, but it was a pure, deep sci-fi film, so the viewers were pissed. Nice review. I wanted so much to like this movie. I watched it 5 times to see if maybe I was missing something but liked it less each time. It is telling that Scott went from three prequels with no xenos to calling it Alien and having xenos after Bloomkamp got positive responses for wanting to make Alien 2.5.

Saying some place is uninhabitable reminds of the time my ex and I rented a boat to camp on an island in northern Wisconsin. We'll we showed up a half hour before a violent storm, we tried to find the island and the storm hit quickly after our start. I could not navigate and basically could not see 8 foot ahead of us! It was very confusing and we set down on a sliver of land that would be by no means considered inhabitants but I insisted it was the edge of the island and we set up tent to get out of the elements. In the morning, luckily the island we were aimed for was only like 4 football fields away.

Prometheus doesn't exist in a gray area. It's completely retarded, except for the wonderful visuals, tanks to Riddley's great eye. But the story and the characters are completely stupid, and that kills the movie entirely for me. ALL the characters' actions are completely stupid and the plot looks like it was put together by a mentally-handicapped 2-year-old child (namely known as Damon Lindelof, cf. all LOST episodes and the new STAR TREK movies).
I liked prometheus, it gave me a feeling of wonder... Sure I wish it had more to do with the xenomorphs but it's overall good, your just to simple minded...

The engineer at the beginning is offering himself, It's part of their religion. The giant head in the giant head room is their god. All those cannisters are offerings. Weyland was in cryosleep this whole time, that medpod was made for him. The black goo has different effects deppending on where it's made conntact. David is an android that's duty is to take/find/destroy/make. You know... He is programmed to do anything he can to help find what weyland is looking for. Giant squid is a kind of facehugger. Remember that Xenomorph's look different depending on what creature the host is. Thats why it looked different. A long time ago there was a xeno infestation there, thats why everyone is dead. Notice that there are holes in their chests (The bodies of engineers by the door) XENO'S!!! And the little squid that later grew up to giant squid is a reference to Jesus by the way :3

***** We don't bash it on that basis, we do so on a mix of reasons:
1: It's fun watching them react to our bashing in such aggressive and overly fanatical ways.
2: We get loads of laughs out of the half assed arguments the fanatics make back at us.
3: The fanaticals are the gift that keeps on giving in the forms of endless comedic material, remember Banana man, he was a laugh riot! Then there is that Ken Ham fellow who just has me rolling on the floor in laughter half the time.
4: It needs to be said. The fanatics continue to try to push their views on to others and try to control how other people live by doing the thing that only the lowest form of human would do, target children in school with their misinformation and skewing of the facts (Evolution being one of such things that has been skewed and misrepresented by these fanatics in schools)
5: It also needs to be shown. These fanatics we go for are often monsters in the highest degrees whom show no sympathy to others of different view points. It is one of the purposes of free speech that we call them out and prevent such horrible views from spreading, and thus causing suffering to others at their hands. Religious bullying is indeed a problem.
6: It's damn fun! I love to destroy arguments and the religious of this level provide a perfect training ground for beginning debaters as their arguments are often full of fallacies and flaws.

Xenomorphs and the Deacon (proto-xenomorph thing) are seperate species, the Xenomorphs, despite appearing to be designed, are actually a full-fledged species with their own homeworld, it's assumed that the ancient predators found the planet and took some Xenomorphs to breed and hunt, while the Engineers saw their potential as a bio-weapon and also took some.
So the Black liquid and the Xenomorphs were seperate bio-weapons.
I guess David poisoned Hollway's drink, to see if the black goo, might help/rejuvenate his maker "Weyland". Which I suppose would be his main programing.

Funny thing is, I remember, indeed, HAD one of those love seats. Early 1990s, an almost exclusive special they had at Rent-A-Center. You kept that thing in great shape for almost 20+ years old.
With how much I have looked into the film I have come to understand it and most of all like it. It's basically about how the engenders are a sort of higher race who create life through the use of the black goo as an artificial mutator and all the creatures in it are more examples of how the black goo alters life in an unregulated envirioment. Plus I love the ngineers aesthetic. They look literaly perfect (which is the whole idea)
I think Weyland is why the machine in Vickers' quarters is calibrated for male patients.
It's not even in Vicker's quarters, it's on the lifeboat where Vicker's quarters _and_ Weyland's quarters are located. There are two doors to the medpod room. One door is in a corridor, and the other door is from that fancy room with the bar, the piano and the chandelier.
