  • I have been getting asked a lot about how the torque steer is now that I have a tune on my ST. In this video I answer that question exactly.

Torque steer is caused by the axle. One is short and one is long, the long axle twists more then the short one does so the longer axle "lags" in acceleration and the short axle gets the power before the longer axle. That's why it turned to the right because the short axle is to the left tire

I daily a Chrysler 200 with the 3.6l/6-speed auto (like in the minivans) on E85 (factory flex fuel tune) and did notice a difference in torque steer after replacing the factory 225/50TR18 Eagle LS2 tires with a couple sets of Z rated BFG Comp2 A/S and now a set of V rated Firehawk A/S, all in 235/50R18 as well as just turning thentraction control off on the hockey puck LS' it came with. While traction control and cheap tires don't help things any, just the length of the passenger side drive shafts vs driver side and different motor and/or diff mount will have an effect on FWD and some AWD vehicles. I also used to own a couple of the 80's Turbo Mopars (both built where the 200 was, oddly enough) and they would twitch around too, sometimes enough to scare the unsuspecting and occasionally deserving. One of the things that would cause it on those was that the distance between the diff and wheel on the driver side was much shorter than the passenger and the much longer 2 piece drive assembly would more easily twist like an anti-roll bar or torsion bar and absorb more of the power than left could then would take a hard right. Putting the harder Mopar Performance "racing" motor mounts in my Lebaron did help as well, since having the engine and trans shifting around would make things worse too.

I know this is an old post , just came across it . I have a Focus ST on a 15 plate with a tune and have to say the torque steer is horrendous , damm right scary , it really is . I live in the UK and the roads are CRAP . not very often we find a road as flat as the one you are driving on in your video . If i accellerate while crossing over the white line in the middle of the road while overtaking , its dangerous , believe me its that bad.
Wish we had roads like yours .

I went from an 08 Subaru STI to a 2017 ST the Torque steer is really bad when you start from a stop if you hit the throttle too hard. Also tends to spin the tires easily I really miss the traction and control I had with the STI but I just didn't want to fork out another 40k for cheap hatchback that eats tires. You have to kind of really be mindful of the torque steer have a good grip on the wheel just can't punch it off the line without a good grip. If your rolling like 10-15 mph the torque steer is not nearly as bad its just bad from a stop.

great video...i was so looking forward to this video. Glad that the Torque steer isnt too much of a big deal. Out here in UK, Ford has stopped production of the ST now - so there are a lot of dealer stock vehicles available at a great price. I am in two minds now - contemplating whether I should wait for the new Focus ST or pick up one now. Do you know when Ford is planning to launch the new Focus ST - end of 2018 or beginning of 2019.

The brake talk vector is not as present in sport mode because the traction control is wiched off what the talk vector control is trying to do what an lsd does when one wheel brake traction the brake is applied to that wheel but in sport mode both wheel can spin that why in sports mode you can smoke the hell out of your tyres

2.2 Mondeo with 200ps->235ps tune (~500nm max torq). No difference either.
For me, torque steer is annoying when I do hard acceleration in 3rd/4th. It tries to constantly pull the car left or right. Can happen in 1st too. I am not saying it's something you can't control, but CAN be annoying. The tune did NOT affect the torque steer effect, it was already present the same way in the original ECU map. It also only happens if the ECU puts out the most power (you can feel the different stages. if the engine is warmed up, the conditions are right, the engine can do this super hard pull and that's where it happens.)
I have 17" rims with regular Continental tires, nothing fancy.
