- Two years ago, James Charles was one of the most popular names when discussing the CZcams mainstream. He was playing Minecraft with PewDiePie, hosting his own reality TV Show called "Instant Influencer", all while his personal CZcams channel was clearing well over 100 million views per month. However, over the last year, for James Charles, things have changed… significantly. He’s lost over 1.5 million subscribers equivalent to losing more than 100,000 subs per month, his average viewership per video has declined from well over 10 million to a little over 1 million, all while his twitter hasn’t seen any positive follower growth during the same time period. You might say that James Charles has become the poster child victim of internet cancellations. However, we should use the term “victim” lightly, as the death of his career has certainly been self-inflicted, and could have easily been avoided. Numerous controversies led CZcamsrs such as H3H3 and Keemstar to call James Charles out for his actions and his multiple "fake" apology videos.

I should also address the experience that I had with James as well: I should start by saying that this was in July of 2022 just after I had turned 12, James Charles added me on Discord and we started chatting to each other, at first it seemed like any other, however only 20 minutes later he started sending me nudes of himself and after I told him that I was only 12 he started asking me for nudes myself, I immediately blocked him and unfriended him on Discord and showed the evidence to my parents and they were able to talk to him and told him to be very careful with me because I was only 12.
I am sorry if I get criticised for not coming out about this earlier but I’m doing it now and thank you guys for the support ❤

It’s not ‘don’t address serious drama’ but rather don’t dwell on it. Don’t write 10 pages explaining why what you did wasn’t as bad as people think it was. Don’t make things about you when you are at fault. Don’t leave CZcams for 3 months then come back and address drama again right when you come back. It’s ridiculous how Charles could have just apologised and moved on, but chose to address these allegations over and over again, first trying to understate what he’s done only to then go and pull the ‘I have serious issues’ card when situation got too heated. This could have all been avoided.

I actually went and looked at the numbers on Socialblade, because I’m a massive nerd and would actually take the time to do that.
And, yes, James’ career is all but dead - *by the standards of CZcamsrs with more than 20 million subscribers.*
James hasn’t experienced positive subscriber growth on CZcams for almost two years. But subscribers isn’t the main method CZcams uses of determining money earned from the site - that would be views. Granted, James’ view counts have also plummeted since this situation, but that’s by the standards of CZcamsrs like him. Yes, he’s nowhere near the 150 million views he got in February 2021, but his view count for March 2023 is still pretty healthy - 40.9 million.
He’s averaging roughly 1.3 million views per day, which brings him roughly $5,200 in ad revenue per day. That comes out to about $156,000 a month, or about $1.87 million per year. And that’s just from CZcams - with the sales of his other products, I wouldn’t be surprised if his total earnings comes out to more than $3 million a year.
So it isn’t necessarily fair to call James’ career *totally* dead. Yes, he’s nowhere near his past relevance, but he’s still bringing in a preposterous amount of money and views. And I don’t know if I’d call almost $2 million a year just from CZcams “a dead career”.

What bugs me is the response to him inappropriately speaking to minors. As an adult it is always your responsibility to make sure you don't commit a crime. If the influencer can prove that they genuinely had no idea and backed off when they found out, that’s one thing. But if the same thing happened multiple times? Then the excuses disappear.

Messaging one person not realising / having been misled to their age is a mistake. However, by the third time it happens surely you'd be getting more careful? I think the problem is more that their apologies are consistently hollow and inauthentic, even on face value. I've been watching a video series by Mickey Atkins who is a licensed therapist, analysing apology videos, and they're consistently low-effort and fail to demonstrate actual personal growth on the wrong-doer's part.
But to be fair, it takes a very careless or predatory person to be doing the stuff that warrants a public apology video to begin with, so I don't really think it's the apology itself that's condemning people to irrelevance and shame but more the personality that led them to do unacceptable things.
