Tuner Time Ep. 13 - Mazda MX6 Review ( The Most Underrated/Undervalued 90s JDM Sports Car)

  • The 93-97 Mazda mx6 (mx-6) is the most underrated & undervalued 90s JDM sportscars. It's up there with the Honda Civics, Acura Integras, Toyota Celicas ect. But for some reason no one thinks to get a mx6. These beautiful rare cars are matted with a KLDE 2.5L V6 that gets close to 30MPG. With a smooth power delivery and fun dynamics, it's a great car to build or cruise as a daily. The uniqueness of it is enough to want to own one. Nowadays you can get one used for $1,000 - $5,000. Because it shares it's platform with the Ford Probe of the same years, you can still find parts for these reliable gems.
We also have a new film coming soon. So be on the look out for our new tuner film coming out called "FOUR AMIGOS".

The big pitfall with the MX6 is the lack of a limited slip differential. If the US market got the JDM version with 4 wheel steering and the 200hp KLZE it might be more desirable among the aftermarket community. Either way, beautiful styling! The design team on the MX6 was led by Tom Matano, famous for designing the first generation Miata.

@@Hypatude It doesnt even matter about the value, its about the driving experience. I had my 2.5 V6 24V MX6 for about 10 years & loved it, only 2 things let it down for driving & that was front wheel drive & although it was a great motor it should have had a turbo or twin turbo option, then it would have been a serious car instead of how my mates called it a hair dressers car! As Nick mentions an AWD with twins added it would have been killer!!

Gorgeous car. Mine just hit 153,000 miles, not bad for a 30-year old car. Allstar Automotive on 300 West in SLC did an awesome repaint job a decade ago that still looks great. Costs a couple thousand dollars a year for maintenance. Finally found a driver's side window switch that works. Now have to figure out how to re-secure the shifter boot that detached.

Thanks for the great video. These are truly under appreciated 90’s JDM, i’m old enough to remember when these were new and as a kid just out if high school, seeing the beautiful sleek curves of one at a dealership I wowed to make one mine some day. I eventually got a silver 93 LS 5 speed with a black leather interior. I kept it for many years until an absurdly low milage VR6 GTI stole my heart. I still miss my MX-6 and its nimble handling, zero blind spots and that butter smooth, sonorous V6 with its crazy 7200 RPM redline. To me, this car always felt “just right”.

My first car was a black m-edition, klde 2.5l v6 5spd...love that car. Yes it had tourque steer, but otherwise handled great, was reasonably quick, and suprisingly stable at high speeds...might be trying to resurect it soon actually.

Thank you for the video. I have a red 94 with a full ZE swap and exhaust. One of the best sounding v6s I've heard. Mine needs paint work so the wife keeps asking me to sell it, but I just can't let it go. I do wish it had LSD or RWD, but the handling and power delivery are top notch for an early 90s car especially when the VRIS kicks in.

this was the second car i ever had, even the same dark dark green, i bought it in 2004 for 650$, my father an i worked on it an then we ended up putting a Erebuni Aerodynamic's SHOGUN bodykit on it then we had it painted it mercedes platinum silver an took it to shows. i cant tell you how it brokes peoples necks even BONE STOCK lol everywhere i went everyone asked what it was,
i must say it really dont get any better then a MX-6 LSv6, i had the 3 speed auto an it did 142 with just me in it, still my fav car out of mazda even over the RX-7 its bigger brother.

On my 2nd MX6 the 1st one was lowered and dark purple with wing and offset mags after 10 yrs I ditch it for a Cougar Edge which was wiped out by a delivery 3 ton truck that T-Boned it after I dolled it up and only had it for 3 months.
My current MX6 was a classic one owner garage kept Red beauty super low 74.000 kms I have GT this one up real nice running lights, wing, alloy spoke 17" with super wide rubber boots, black accent on the Red hood and rear following the body lines of course. It shines like a diamond a few people have mentioned it's the cleanest car they have ever seen. (OCD)
This past summer even though it didn't need it I did all the belts timing and serpentine new alternator and water pump. Spark wires and higher amp battery replaced as well. Next summer it's going to get coil overs & vented brakes set up.
It Currently has 114,000km (70,000 miles) on it and I'm trying to keep the mileage down it's strictly a summer ride and garage kept as well.
This past summer I pulled into a parking lot were a Lambo and a Vette were parked the guys standing around them all came over to ask about the MX6 a few people said they didn't know Mazda made a car like this and they couldn't believe it was a vintage 1994 car.
    😀= Me.

Loved the video! I own a 95 ford probe 16v which is an mx6 but with popup headlights (thats why i bought it lol) and even tho its not as "sporty" as the v6 ones its still ao much fun! Im planning to tune the engine to get at least 160hp i really love your mx6
Also its very funny that the interrior is almost the same as the probe except that i feel like the probe interior feels more like a sport coupe with everythibg centered around the pilot and the seats (thats just my opinion and i might be wrong on some things i said tho)
And even tho i feel like the ford probe is more known that the mx6, its insanely rare where i live, i only seen one because the guy is a car enthusiast but thats all, and i seen an mx6 too but only one time.

Im a tad partial, but while the v6 IS the go to for many the 4cyl in super slept on. Stock fs have gone for over 500k miles. And for what it's worth the aftermarket for the fs is far greater than the v6 due to sharing a majority of the market with the protege's fsde. Different revision but extremely similar. The trouble I see people getting into the car is expecting to throw cheap universal parts at the car and expecting 700whp. Then scraping the cars and buying "a honda". I love these cars and the community in general is hands above any you'll find elsewhere. I've met in person and digitally hundreds of people I consider friends and a few best friends.

As for it being “rare” & “undervalued” is absolutely wrong. Not every care is rare & the value of MX-6 in today’s market is right where it ought to be, way under $5k. Cool video though. 🤙🏼

You’re right about everything except it’s not a JDM. It was made in Flat Rock Michigan with the Ford Probe. US Parts content was high enough it was sold as a domestic.
Now that I have that out of the way… it’s One of my all time favorites. I owned 2 in Hunter Green Mica… at the same time. Bought the first 1992 at auction with an auto when it was 4 years old. Loved it so much I bought a manual. Both had under 40,000 miles. And both got pounded in a hail storm. Sad sad day.
I test drove a 96 Prelude Si and a 95 240sx around that time.. Prelude was so buzzy and just felt cheap compared to the MX6. 240 definitely felt more substantial but the ride was so jarring over every single little crack in the road.
MX6 was by far the nicest driving and looking of the 3.
And the stopping power of the MX6 was one of the best ever. 60-0 in 100 ft. Most other cars were in the 120-130ft….Like the 99 Civic Si everyone loves stopped at the higher end of that.
But the motors weren’t reliable and clutches slipped around 40,000 miles on the MX6. And spark plug wires died at 40,000 miles.. and they cost $150 back then. I own a 96 SC400 now with 220k. I bought it 3 years ago and it ran perfect with the original spark plug wires.
    Reliability has always plagued Mazda.
    But they drive so nice.

I had a brand new Red one. V6 Manual Trans. The Light cloth interior. All the smoothness you talk of is true. It also was powerful enough, and yet light enough that powering through a block or so of 6 to 8 inch snow was possible (something you wouldn't count on a low to the ground sports car to be able to do). My big problems with this car were (in reverse order):
#4. The snow catcher rear spoiler... I mean, really. It doesn't offer much if any advantage in roadholding, so why is it there?
#3. Replacing the CV joints EVERY 40K miles (It was like clockwork).
#2. The ABS brakes. ABS brakes in their infantcy. When going over potholes with the brake pedal depressed, expect the ABS to kick in. SO MANY close calls because of the ABS increasing stop distance! Only once do I recall the ABS helping me to stop in snow and Ice. After a few visits to the dealer, the ABS was a little less aggressive. But after that car, I noticed that ALL manual transmission cars on the market did not have ABS brakes (well, my 2006 Nissan Altima did, but Nissan admitted that was an error in the window sticker and tried to buy the car back).
#1. Possibly related to the ABS: The car tried to kill me 3 times! All were cool to cold and wet road situations. All were at speed (over 55, probably closer to 80). All where I tapped the brake and attempted to steer the car into an adjacent lane. In this case, the steering wheel froze. What I later discovered is that all power to the steering wheel power assist vanished in an instant. Twice I awaited doom only to discover at the last moment the power had come back to the steering. The third and last time, I was out of options and had to attempt to force the steering wheel to move (which it did, and thankfully the brakes had scrubbed off speed and the approaching corner was not too restrictive). 3 times, the dealer said, "Well, the system does register that there was an 'Event', but it doesn't tell us what it was. The belts seem tight and are not slipping, and we can't find any vacuum leak in the hydraulics. So we don't know what happened." (or some other variation to this).
I loved the car. I do miss it. That engine and transmission were silky sweet. The ride was nice. I just couldn't accept that it wasn't safe to drive when the steering and brakes conspire to rob the hydraulics.
