  • Wanted to share blue crab trap regulations for Florida and the gulf of Mexico, The Florida wild life commission has all the regulations posted on their website if your planning on trapping crabs there. i have built my traps to the regulations, and wanted to share with you. A lot of the components are built by me but all can be purchased online from many suppliers. The metal mesh was purchased from amazon, i recommend no less than 16 gauge wire (18 is smaller) for your traps. I have a build video being up loaded next with more info on this. but as stated, always consult all regulations for the area you plan to place your traps. thank you

in Italy in the last two years we have been invaded by these blue crabs. each person with just 40 cages takes at least a quintal a day. Here males pay 15 euros per kilo and females 8. All the Chinese buy them.

Great video 👍🏼 very clear to rules and methods on how to. I have a question on how long does the buoy rope has to be? Or is common sense thing like if the hightide goes up around 5 ft. from bottom in area I’m setting the trap in then I make it 5 ft. ?
And again thank for the video it helped answer a lot of questions I was looking for.

I set my traps in 10 to 15 feet of water in the bay, I use 25 ft. of rope with an old trolling sinker attached to it at about the middle. This keeps the rope under the bouy and out of boat propellers. 10 ft over will account for tidal changes.

sorry for late response. did not see it. I have no knowledge on these kinds of traps. I will have to advise on checking with your Local DNR on regulations on them

In Florida they are legal if labeled. Recreational crab trapping is free if you have the fishing license, but you have to get online or go to the store, get the permit which consists of being given your crab traping number. Number goes on trap along with 1 for trap 1, 2 for trap 2, etc.

What if the trap is tied to a fixed object? Do you need to have the 6 Inch foam stamped with R?

Good question, most likely it would be no. As long as it's a dock or pier

So how do we make the throat openings into spec now ? Especially the rigid part?

I cut my openings from plastic cutting board, drilled some holes and zip tied on

Hopefully you know that this past March 1st they changed the regs on the traps for recreational fishermen. The smallest part of the throat openings can't be larger than 2x6 inches-and rigid. By rigid it means it can not be forced to become larger than 2x6 inches. Don't care how it's done, just can't open larger than 2x6.
I built 25 similar traps for catching bait. I sell live bait amongst other saltwater products. I used 1/4 inch hardware cloth-that's what they call it-at 2x3 feet. I have bought crab traps but only for recreational/self purposes. Pulled 37 out of 2 traps Saturday after 1 day soak, none under 4". Neighbors all got plenty and I still had to many, won't be dropping them again for awhile, 4 meals of crabs in 2 days, to much.

Mention that in the video, the video was made before the regulations came into effect

Crab trap material has a minimum of 1.5 inch squares, can't use hardware cloth with 1/4 inch sq.
