    One the original luxury centre forwards, Dimitar Berbatov entertained all those that paid to watch him live.
    But run-ins with gangsters, and playing in the shadows of some of the game's best players perhaps held him back from being one of the game’s greats.
    This is the story of Dimitar Berbatov.

      Yeah, I think most United fans loved him, there seemed to be some impression outside the fan base that we were frustrated with him. Any frustration was temporary - he always gave his best I think for United. The patches were he didn't score was almost like his own frustration was putting him off. Wasn't United's best ever forward but far closer to the best than the worst

    I think there's only one word that comes to mind when I think of Berbatov, and that's "silky." He had quite possibly the best first touch I have ever seen, and everything he did was so soft and smooth it was unbelievable. He definitely fell short in terms of delivering on his potential, but what a player he was nonetheless.

    • @user-hm3ym7lq7g
      @user-hm3ym7lq7g Před 2 lety +39

      Regarding the comment about his potential. Maybe he was just unlucky. When he was at Spurs they were nowhere near the club they are now, then he spent his prime at Man United with either too much competition or getting intentionally benched by SAF. In his last season he barely got any playtime. Most of his games were around Christmas when there were a lot of injuries. And he scored goals and showed good form, but still didn't get a proper chance afterwards.

      @@user-hm3ym7lq7g You're right for sure, but it's still an accurate statement to say he didn't live up to his potential, regardless of the reasons for that. Saying a player didn't live up to their potential isn't necessarily saying luck wasn't a factor or that it was due to something they did/didn't do, it's just a factual statement that their career fell short of what could have been.

    As a Spurs fan, losing him to Man Utd was one of my darkest days. I've never seen a player with such a first touch, an ability to control the most overhit and wayward passes. Sure, he was a defensive liability, never going to press a defence. But somehow he didn't need to. There was a sense he was just playing in a parallel universe, one beating to his own unique metronome. I can't help feeling Spurs was the right place for him, where expectations may have been lower. Sure, he won stuff at Man Utd, but I never felt he was /is as loved as he still is at Spurs

    Nothing epitomises Berbatov more than his goal for Monaco vs Nice in 2014. He gets a ball played to him over his left shoulder, one touch with his right boot and the ball is killed and bounces once. As it rises, he flicks the ball with the outside of his boot and lobs the goalkeeper. All this whilst midway between the 6 yard box and penalty box.
