    Atari gets an "A" for effort considering how precarious of a financial situation the company is in at the moment. Their heart seems to be in the right place.

    I picked this up. I love it. Will I play Atari 2600 games a lot? Nope. However, it sits nicely next to my big screen tv on a nice stand. I smile every time I walk by it, so it brings me joy. I like to remember the fun times back in 1979 loading these cool cartridges.

    My first ever memory of playing video games is my mother and I sitting on the floor in front of the TV playing Combat! on the 2600. I was probably four or five years old and the year would've been 1982. I played that Atari until 1985 when for Christmas I got the NES Deluxe Set that came with R.O.B, Gyromite and Duckhunt. With the Atari games, I remember looking at the box art for certain games and would use that image to help me imagine the game world I was seeing on screen.

    My fascination with Atari now lies within the homebrew scene. I love seeing talented folks outside the constraints of memory and timelines recreate NES, Arcade or other more modern games. I am amazed at how creative programmers can get to get the most out of the atari CPU.

    My wife bought me this, but I'm not allowed to open until Christmas. That's ok though as I have a bunch of other games to play in the meantime. My first console was the 2600 Jr. I played it until the power switch wore out on it. This despite having a Game Boy for a few of those years. Wish I still had the console as it's an easy fix now, but I was 16 and saw no value in keeping it at the time. Since then I got a 7800 and modded it a few years ago to output S-Video. Looks great, but having this 2600+ will simplify the connection.

      That's exactly why I got mine.... I have OG hardware, but hdmi is so easy these days, and I love how ultra crisp it looks on an LED screen

  • @redleader7988
    @redleader7988 Před 8 měsíci +8

    Atari had some great features for the day. Atari used beam racing which locked to the CRT clock, which is why movement is always so smooth and jitter free on CRT displays. It's also 60fps which PlayStation didn't even have until fairly recently (and still frame buffered so jitter exits). It also had hardware collision registers and modern systems rely on hit boxes. It could do single line resolution for all pixels and could do single clock pixels by dividing the screen into large playfield pixels and high (single clock) resolution sprites. Because it didn't have to frame-buffer all pixel elements could be changed independently per line (I've seen up to any of 8 colors per line from a large palette of 128 colors in a demo), for a total of 128 actual displayable colors on any screen with only 128 bytes of ram. That's crazy for 1977. The color gradients can look almost Amiga-like. Some recent homebrews like Freight Zone and the ChampGames stuff have made some good use of the hardware, but I expect to see great things from the hardware in the future if it's used as it was intended and within its limits.

  • @randomgamer-st1ie
    @randomgamer-st1ie Před 8 měsíci +9

    I mean if it plays original 2600 game carts & 7800 game carts AND uses original controllers, it's a great way to play vs using the old consoles with aging capacitors. The only downside I see, for me, is HDMI only. I prefer CRTs for retro gaming. Coulda easily added composite out.

    I started gaming back in 1986 with the Nes and Master System. The Atari 2600 is before my time and really doesn't resonate with me like it does others. We (fiancee and I) do have a heavy sixer in our retro collection but we never use it. It's still pretty neat...

  • @GameFreak1976
    @GameFreak1976 Před 8 měsíci +16

    The 2600 was my very first console (I believe I received it in 81). As far as video games, THIS was it. Obviously the NES buried the 2600 on its release. However, Atari was an important piece of gaming history. It had no blueprint to go off of. So naturally, it made mistakes. Gaming was also different back then. With the lack of good graphics, it required an imagination while playing. People who weren’t born yet when the 2600 was released, wouldn’t understand. And no, I’m definitely not bashing those who weren’t born yet. It is just a generational difference is all. I still play my original 2600 and did purchase the Gamestation, but will most likely pass on this. Though I do still respect the Atari for being the pioneers of gaming, I definitely can’t sit and play the games as long today as I can with more modern games. 👍

      They had a very fast ride to being insanely successful. I keep going back and playing Pitfall 2, HERO and Adventure. When we were kids Atari was the only game in town so we played the heck out of whatever games we had.

    • @cyberspirt
      @cyberspirt Před 8 měsíci +2

      Same here, I got mine christmas of 82. Asteroids and combat were all I had for 2 years, lol. But then I ended up with Chopper command, Atlantis, Pitfall and Barnstorming. Never had many games for it because back then new games were like $50 and that was a fortune in those days and my mother was raising me by herself and she made like $3 an hour. But I cherish those memories.

    Lots of complaining in the comments, about this system.
    This console obviously isn't for you. But there are still a lot of people that grew up on this, and still enjoy playing Yar's Revenge, HERO, Beamrider etc.
    Yes, you have to use your own imagination, but that's what I like about it.
    And if it wasn't for this console, and the huge success it had, the NES etc, might not even have been created.

    Atari was huge back in the day as it was the beginning of home gaming because Atari wasn't near perfect it still drove people into the arcades, I remember when colecovision came out and 6 months before its release I got an Atari and wish I would of waited! Finally arcades were being challenged as coleco turned into a overnight monster providing close to the real arcades, My friend down the street had got a colecovision and it was absolutely awesome and to the point going home to play my Atari became not very enjoyable after playing colecovision and as coleco faded do to the Nintendo coming out no longer did people rush into a arcade and wait inline to play! I just can't get excited for this Atari but the memories were great, If they did a decent colecovision loaded and played real cartridges as well I would definitely jump on it as its still one of the coolest consoles ever made !

Plays most of the 400+ Atari carts in my collection, though you'll occasionally get a load error every time with a few of them. Worth it if you'd like a branded hardware update that's made for modern displays but has the tactile experience of the original.

So after selling my games there is no point in buying this console.
    If the console was an NES, SNES, GAME BOY, or N64, like a more smaller consoles that use real cartridges and real controllers I would not think twice and just buy those consoles, I already had an Everdrive fro those console, getting a new console with hdmi would be so cool. If you have tons of Atari 2600 and 7800 games then this might be your answer for playing it on a modern HDTV. Plus Atari at least is working on updating the list of games and homebrew titles that are compatible with the console.

    Unboxed it today. Played 10 cartridges for 45 minutes. Didn’t play any dip switch games. I got the paddle bundle. Didn’t play those games either. I put it back in the box. I don’t think I’ll be playing this console too much. I got this on my steam deck anyway.

    I‘ll stick with my Retron 77. Does the job quite well, has a better layout and works with original hardware too. Furthermore, the Hyperkin Ranger is a competent hybrid controller to handle all kinds of 2600 games.

    Cancelled my.pre order when learned more about it... Atari Flashback 50th with a hack can run everything with all the boxes shown, this cant run many homebrew carts. There is no second button, so not sure how good 7800 will run either...unless i plug in a non Atari pad. So if doing that I may as well use my launch box 7800 emulation.
    Overall not for me I think... but then I am lucky enough to have an original woody Atari and a CRT.
    I am interested if the paddles and sticks may work on flashback and pc emulation as the paddles do look better.

    Ok. My thoughts
    I just wanna say I bought one for myself AND one for my nephew after playing it (and him basically taking over mine)
    This is also perfect for those who want to get initiated into game collecting. It's a very inexpensive start. I just recently bought 32 carts for $70. Averages to about 2.60 each.
    It's a great thing for those who want physical copies of games and to obtain them without the grey area issue of roms.
    Yes there are collections but how many of those collections have demon Attack, cosmic ark, empire strikes back, berzerk? 0. Most of the flashbacks and collections are the same games just updated with a couple extra games from time to time. The 50th was great for what it was but ataris strength was in Activision and imagic games. Even 20th century to a degree (alien and fantastic voyage)
    So I think it's great that they did this. My nephew, who's 7 , has played this more than his PS4 over the last few days
    I'm going to be one of those who aren't gonna complain about the plug. I've got a lot of those just laying around. The only thing I didn't like was the length of the cord. I had to use a much longer one to make sure it reached. But I had one of those kicking around the house too.
    The only real complaint I have is with the joystick. I don't know if it's because it's brand new but it seems a lot more stiff than how I remember it as a kid. Definitely noticeable when I'm playing pitfall and pacman.
    Overall for the price point and the fun that it's bringing the 2nd time around. It's well worth it. Not to mention it's nice not playing a game with 8+ buttons again!

    It's true I don't want it but I also agree that it is interesting and the fact it is an official modern version of the 2600 is sweet. Meanwhile we get "mini" versions of the old nintendo sega and playstation stuff that can't play original games and is essentially an emulator and roms. Atari had to do SOMETHING after that mess with the VCS or whatever cuz that probably cost them some loot though which is maybe why they did this at all.

    I’m sticky with my og Atari 2600 mostly because I own a Retrotink 5x for my snes and N64. Only downside is I need to use a vcr to use with my tink I am also 29 with about 15 games just ordered my first homebrew game from Atari age. The tink does a good enough job to make the game playable even though it’s RF.

    I’m 45. I’ve played video games since the late 80s. I never owned any Atari systems back in the day. My cousin had the 2600 junior and even then I thought it was primitive. Another cousin had a nes and there was no competition. I have limited gaming time these days so there’s no way I’d pick an Atari 2600 game over something like Streets of Rage 2 or Castlevania 4

    Here is to hoping Atari sticks around. Love seeing them back in business. I think many are a bit tired of Sony Microsoft and Nintendo being the only options in gaming. I think there is room for a scaled back version of Sega to go along with Atari. Second tier gaming if you will. They don't have to compete with the big boys if they don't want to. There is plenty in Segas libraries for them to lean hard on without trying to compete as a next gen console. Sega and Atari could collaborate on a system for goodness sake. It doesn't have to be next gen to draw gamers. It could be something both companies budgets could handle without loss and play all of their classic games from the earliest Atari libraries all the way through Segas many years and be a power house in its own niche.

    My older brothers had an Atari when I was very young but I don’t remember playing anything on it. I do think this is cool; I’m just not sure any of the games would appeal to me given how rudimentary they are. For those of you that played Atari back in the day are there any games you would say have stood the test of time, if nothing else from a gameplay standpoint? I respect the history here but I wouldn’t get one of these or pickup old cartridges unless I’d actually want to play them. Maybe the multiplayer focused titles would be easier to get into?

    I used to have an Atari VCS but lost it along the way in the last 43 years. If this had an SD card to load additional games then I'd buy it but I'm not going to pay additional money to buy old cartridges off eBay. Lets be honest, most of the games are pretty rubbish by modern standards so it needs more games so I think I'll try a My Arcade Gamestation Pro although I wish that looked like the 2600+!
