- A school has been criticised for planning to sell a First World War soldier's Victoria Cross to help fund new sports facilities. Ashby School in Leicestershire wants to sell the medals of Lt Col Philip Bent for the project, saying it will inspire future generations, but his former Regiment say the decision would be wrong.

It should be given back to the family
How can you put a price on a man's medals, he's the one who earnt them! Very disrespectful.
And those of us who have them value them as naught.
Rotor, what are your four medals?
Selling a medal like the Victoria Cross, just imagine what kind of message and lessons that will send out to the students... disgraceful.
+emptyangel A piece of metal over a video?
It's much more then a piece of metal
To those of us who earn medals, I have 4, no they are not they are of no value whatsoever. A piece of tin from an ungrateful nation. Don't like that, go and earn your own.
Not disgraceful at all, it’s far more beneficial to the students to actively gain from this hero, rather than be locked away, your sentiments come from a guy who hasn’t earned a gong, I have 4, my eldest son 6 and my middle son 2
(Parachute regiment & submarine service) if my medals were worth anything, I would love a school to benefit from there sale, I have my miniatures, and my red book.
So the VC sits in a vault somewhere unknown. What possible good is that. Sell the VC have a replica made and displayed in the school for all to see. Use the proceeds to enhance the education and life chances of today's generation. Simple sensible and an amazing lrgacy for the family. .
I know the the selling or purchase of the US Medal of Honor US is a federal offense
And I wish they did that here...
The family should have stipulated if it wasn’t at the school it would be given back to them in a contract
Unfortunately they never realised its eventual value
If the school doesn’t want the medals anymore then return them to the families.
If you want to save money get rid of the headmaster. The medal was given to the school for a specific purpose, it was not given to be pawned off for bricks and mortar
What the hell are they teaching those kids with acts like this?
The representation on what happened sitting before a pupils eyes, is far more valuable than some fucking sport centres, buildings which would be demolished in a few decades. Yet another idiotic case of short term benefits over long term benefits.
Give back to the family. No profit for the school. That's not why they were given them
The Australians seem to have the best idea. Whenever possible the VCs are donated (sometimes purchased) to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra where a collection of many of those awarded is on permanent display.
Disrespect of the school to the hero and his family. Things like that should never be lost.
They won't be, they will end up in the IWM. Lord Ashcrofts collection.
its not as disrespectful as victorian VC recipients falling on bad times and being offered peanuts to sell their medals to their regimental museums, anyhooo, this medal was kept in a vault for 44 years after it was given to the school by the recipients mother in 1923, the sale ended up being cancelled as the school could not prove ownership of the medal, which is now on loan to the leicestershire regt museum.
Shocking thing to do!...The Family should take it back!
They shouldn't sell it!!!! He gave it to them to keep safe!!!!
Disgusting! You don't need a sports hall. All you need is the great outdoors to do phys!
How about give the medals back to any family members
The family should have put restrictions on what could be done with the medals. Or given them to a military museum. Since they have been in storage for 40 years it seems the school really had no use for them; otherwise they would have displayed them and paid the insurance.
a medal which is put in a safe out of eyes of pupils so serving what purpose, sad though. For many it could be there only chance to see it. Sell the medal to Lord Ashcroft, it would join his collection then in Imperial War Museaum for the nation to enjoy.
If they cannot display them safely then they should loan them to a museum who can, then everyone can enjoy them. They certainly should not sell them, whoever buys them will probably just lock them back in a safe again and they will rarely see the light of day. I think it is a shameful state of affairs and I think they would not have been given if they knew they would be sold.
These days VCs are usually bought by Lord Ashcroft who displays them at the Imperial War Museum.
a man foght and died for that medal and this school think its all wright to be sold and put on some bodys mantle peace for no one to ever see
john mate nobody sees it anyway! It could be bought by a museum. The school are saddled with insurance for it and can't show it. Better to have a lasting educational investment and they can still name the centre after the guy and therefore keep the story alive. The family gave it away, they can hardly have a say in what the school does!
Shame, any VC for sale should go to a fitting museum - you cannot put a price on the valour that the recipient of a VC undertook.
As long as it goes to a proper buyer then I'm okay with it. I would think making a sports centre and getting children into sport may be more helpful for them than the Victorian crosses.
How does a "pavilion" inspire anyone? I'd ultimately agree w/ the school in selling the things. It is obvious the people running the "school" don't even know what a virtue is, much less do they have any intention of teaching them. Anyone who says a sports pavilion is just as good as a VC is so perfect an ass that they should be legally barred from coming w/in 100 ft. of a school much less be employed to teach children. This cross would better off anywhere else but at this "school."
A medal is awarded for service to your country the Victoria cross is the highest award for valour. Nobody should ever sell another man's valour.
Disgusting behaviour by this school... if they don't want it donate it to a museum.
Personally I think the medals should be kept not sold off, the family did not give them to the school to sell, if they don’t want them they should be given to the closest living Relative . Does anyone know if the school sold them???? Jimmy the Hat 🎩🙏🇬🇧Amen
Give it back.
To who? And if they did what's stopping that person selling and keeping all the money? Besides which trustees cannot give away what they are trustees of.
I believe there were only 3 Crimea VC's. The school has no right to sell them.
Terrible. Shame on that school.
At first I was disgusted by this. But when you listen and see what they want to do with the cash. It kind of makes it slightly harder to be as annoyed.
I think there is plenty of different ways to raise money for the sports hall etc.
To me the younger generations are losing touch with our historic and brave past.
When it boils down to it some things aren't for sale for any reason or any amount. These medals should go to a museum or to the recipients family end off.
I can't be offended. They are of value to few, least of all the school, but will give them valuable funds. They will be bought by only one man Lord Ashcroft, and ultimately left in the IWM, for the nation to enjoy.
Disgusting, .... there is no other way to describe the proposition to sell a Victoria Cross. It should be DONATED to a museum, or to Lord Ashcroft.... at least he truely values what a Victoria Cross represents.....
the new morality
Does the school have any right to sell the medals. They must surely have been a gift from the families unless they originally sold them to the school
Why would someone try and collect medals they didn’t earn? It’s not a piece of art. It’s a MEDAL.
was this ever sold or did they see sense ?
it was given with a purpose. It was a gift uncredibly big it can´t be bought it has to be earned and it should stay that way. you can
t buy honour or valor.´ and given this action it seems that the educational needs of this school are rather high, cause after all these years they still haven´
t learned anything despite the great educational materials given to them
.
The medals were not given to the school to sell. The family should take back the medals and donate them or loan them to the Leciscestershire Regiment Museum if there is one. The school should be ashamed of themselves!
its legal to sell a Victoria cross?
How much is a life worth ?
I wonder who bought it ?, Lord Ashcroft adding to his collection maybe ? At least more people
might get a chance to see it, rather than it being locked in a safe incurring insurance costs.
It's not the medal that is important, it's the story behind it.
I read it somewhere that the school was unable to prove its ownership, so it was loaned to measum for display. i hope it is true.
I think it's more a case of not being able to afford the insurance premiums.
Disgusting....
the school should honour the reason behind why the medal was given to them in trust, it was not to sell off because some PC members only see £$£$£$£$£$£$£$.
That man probably lost his life for his country and your selling his medals? Very greedy, And Disrespectfull!
1353* medals
disgraceful.
It should be illegal to sell the Victoria Cross or any award for Valor. Nobody can legally own another man’s valor. This one should be returned to his Regiment. The school should be shut down for its perversion of morals and attack on the local community’s history. Try despicable behavior.
One wonders to what extent the medals benefit the students at the moment. It sounds far better to sell them and to create the sports centre that can be named after their recipient, thus honouring him more widely.
disgracefull
As much as it saddens me to say it - I think it is the right decision. If the school is so underfunded that it doesn't have sports facilities for their kids, then they owe it to them to do whatever they can to help. Secondly worst case scenario is that the medal goes to a private collector and never sees the light of day, in which case, what has changed since the school couldn't afford the insurance costs to put it on display. And best case scenario is it goes to a museum to be shown to the public AND the school gets their sports facilities. Surely that's the best of both worlds?
Lazy Inaccurate Reporting
For as long as schools, hospitals and other public institutions are starved of cash...
For as long as schools, hospitals and other public institutions are infested with Marxists who hate this country, there, I fixed that for you Dimwit.
Thought the Victoria Cross was made from the bronze cannons won at Balaclava in the Crimean War and had to be handed back to the sovereign at the recipient's death so that it could be given later to another soldier for extreme valor in the face of the enemy. Are they making them out of other bronze now? The family would still have the certificate and the mauve ribbon worn on the uniform tunic. There was only so much bronze melted down from those cannons; some things are temporal, not permanent.
Crass nonsense.
The medals should be returned to the Crown if the family doesn’t want to keep it. What kind of family gives away their dead relation’s medals ? Idk
They should be put on show it would be the highest disgrace to sell them people went through hell not because they wanted these medals but because they wanted to save friends, win battles and wars you sell them what are you saying these people are not worth the time and money to remeber.
They're throwing them away like sweeties now
School Governors should hang their heads in shame
The family gave it to the school and to sell them off is wrong.. Do not sell them, donate them to a military unit.
It the school requires a new sports hall it is down to the government to finance it, that is what taxes are for. If the school want to sell the v,c they obviously do not want it so give it back to the family
The USA cmoh is illegal to sell or buy. Maybe we should go the same way whilst ensuring the stipend will support the winners and their immediate families for their life. Then allow them to be sold. I suspect though that would be like having a proper democracy instead of a constitutional monarchy.
There are not there’s to sell, they have no right without the family consent, so give them back to the family.
Disgusting!
No point in keeping these medals in a box, better to have a new sports area dedicated to Lt Col Philip Bent.
It should be given back to the family
