  • A school has been criticised for planning to sell a First World War soldier's Victoria Cross to help fund new sports facilities. Ashby School in Leicestershire wants to sell the medals of Lt Col Philip Bent for the project, saying it will inspire future generations, but his former Regiment say the decision would be wrong.

      To those of us who earn medals, I have 4, no they are not they are of no value whatsoever. A piece of tin from an ungrateful nation. Don't like that, go and earn your own.

      Not disgraceful at all, it’s far more beneficial to the students to actively gain from this hero, rather than be locked away, your sentiments come from a guy who hasn’t earned a gong, I have 4, my eldest son 6 and my middle son 2
      (Parachute regiment & submarine service) if my medals were worth anything, I would love a school to benefit from there sale, I have my miniatures, and my red book.

      So the VC sits in a vault somewhere unknown. What possible good is that. Sell the VC have a replica made and displayed in the school for all to see. Use the proceeds to enhance the education and life chances of today's generation. Simple sensible and an amazing lrgacy for the family. .

    its not as disrespectful as victorian VC recipients falling on bad times and being offered peanuts to sell their medals to their regimental museums,anyhooo, this medal was kept in a vault for 44 years after it was given to the school by the recipients mother in 1923, the sale ended up being cancelled as the school could not prove ownership of the medal, which is now on loan to the leicestershire regt museum.

    a medal which is put in a safe out of eyes of pupils so serving what purpose, sad though. For many it could be there only chance to see it. Sell the medal to Lord Ashcroft, it would join his collection then in Imperial War Museaum for the nation to enjoy.

  • @trevorpepper1996
    @trevorpepper1996 Před 2 lety +1

    If they cannot display them safely then they should loan them to a museum who can, then everyone can enjoy them. They certainly should not sell them, whoever buys them will probably just lock them back in a safe again and they will rarely see the light of day. I think it is a shameful state of affairs and I think they would not have been given if they knew they would be sold.

Better to have a lasting educational investment and they can still name the centre after the guy and therefore keep the story alive. • @VictorLepanto
    @VictorLepanto Před 5 lety +3

    How does a "pavilion" inspire anyone? I'd ultimately agree w/ the school in selling the things. It is obvious the people running the "school" don't even know what a virtue is, much less do they have any intention of teaching them. Anyone who says a sports pavilion is just as good as a VC is so perfect an ass that they should be legally barred from coming w/in 100 ft. of a school much less be employed to teach children. This cross would better off anywhere else but at this "school."

    I think there is plenty of different ways to raise money for the sports hall etc.
    To me the younger generations are losing touch with our historic and brave past.
    When it boils down to it some things aren't for sale for any reason or any amount. These medals should go to a museum or to the recipients family end off.

    As much as it saddens me to say it - I think it is the right decision. If the school is so underfunded that it doesn't have sports facilities for their kids, then they owe it to them to do whatever they can to help. Secondly worst case scenario is that the medal goes to a private collector and never sees the light of day, in which case, what has changed since the school couldn't afford the insurance costs to put it on display. And best case scenario is it goes to a museum to be shown to the public AND the school gets their sports facilities. Surely that's the best of both worlds?

    Thought the Victoria Cross was made from the bronze cannons won at Balaclava in the Crimean War and had to be handed back to the sovereign at the recipient's death so that it could be given later to another soldier for extreme valor in the face of the enemy. Are they making them out of other bronze now? The family would still have the certificate and the mauve ribbon worn on the uniform tunic. There was only so much bronze melted down from those cannons; some things are temporal, not permanent.
